Abstract:Association schemes play an important role in algebraic combinatorics and have important applications in coding theory, graph theory and design theory. The methods to construct association schemes by using bent functions have been extensively studied. Recently, in [13], {Ö}zbudak and Pelen constructed infinite families of symmetric association schemes of classes $5$ and $6$ by using ternary non-weakly regular bent functions.They also stated that constructing $2p$-class association schemes from $p$-ary non-weakly regular bent functions is an interesting problem, where $p>3$ is an odd prime. In this paper, using non-weakly regular bent functions, we construct infinite families of symmetric association schemes of classes $2p$, $(2p+1)$ and $\frac{3p+1}{2}$ for any odd prime $p$. Fusing those association schemes, we also obtain $t$-class symmetric association schemes, where $t=4,5,6,7$. In addition, we give the sufficient and necessary conditions for the partitions $P$, $D$, $T$, $U$ and $V$ (defined in this paper) to induce symmetric association schemes.

Abstract:We construct twelve infinite families of pseudocyclic and non-amorphic association schemes, in which each nontrivial relation is a strongly regular graph. Three of the twelve families generalize the counterexamples to A. V. Ivanov’s conjecture by Ikuta and Munemasa (Eur J Combin 31:1513–1519, 2010 ).

Abstract:We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. In the first generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are p-ary weakly regular bent. The second generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the second generalization seem to be new.

Abstract:We prove a new characterization of weakly regular ternary bent functions via partial difference sets. Partial difference sets are combinatorial objects corresponding to strongly regular graphs. Using known families of bent functions, we obtain in this way new families of strongly regular graphs, some of which were previously unknown. One of the families includes an example in [N. Hamada, T. Helleseth, A characterization of some {3v2+v3,3v1+v2,3,3}-minihypers and some [15,4,9;3]-codes with B2=0, J. Statist. Plann. Inference 56 (1996) 129–146], which was considered to be sporadic; using our results, this strongly regular graph is now a member of an infinite family. Moreover, this paper contains a new proof that the Coulter–Matthews and ternary quadratic bent functions are weakly regular.
Abelian and Non-Abelian Paley Type Group Schemes

Abstract:In this paper, we present a construction of abelian Paley type group schemes which are inequivalent to Paley group schemes. We then determine the equivalence amongst their configurations, the Hadamard designs or the Paley type strongly regular graphs obtained from these group schemes, up to isomorphism. We also give constructions of several families of non-abelian Paley type group schemes using strong multiplier groups of the abelian Paley type group schemes, and present the first family of p-groups of non-square order and of non-prime exponent that contain Paley type group schemes for all odd primes p.

Abstract:In this paper we study the polynomiality and co-polynomiality of association schemes. These two notions were introduced by Ito. We show that P-polynomial association schemes are co-polynomial and Q-polynomial association schemes are polynomial. We also determine the polynomiality and co-polynomiality for 3-class association schemes. Further we give examples of association schemes that are polynomial but not co-polynomial, or co-polynomial but not polynomial.

Abstract:An association scheme is called skew-symmetric if it has no symmetric adjacency relations other than the diagonal one. In this paper, we study 4-class skew-symmetric association schemes. In J. Ma [On the nonexistence of skew-symmetric amorphous association schemes, submitted for publication], we discovered that their character tables fall into three types. We now determine their intersection matrices. We then determine the character tables and intersection numbers for 4-class skew-symmetric pseudocyclic association schemes, the only known examples of which are cyclotomic schemes. As a result, we answer a question raised by S. Y. Song [Commutative association schemes whose symmetrizations have two classes, J. Algebraic Combin. 5(1) 47-55, 1996]. We characterize and classify 4-class imprimitive skew-symmetric association schemes. We also prove that no 2-class Johnson scheme can admit a 4-class skew-symmetric fission scheme. Based on three types of character tables above, a short list of feasible parameters is generated.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a recursive construction of p-ary bent functions, where p is an odd prime. Several new non-quadratic bent functions over fields with characteristic 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 are found by computer search, all of which are homogeneous. A ternary bent function whose algebraic degree attains the upper bound is given. So far it is the only known example with this property.

Abstract:Vectorial dual-bent functions have recently attracted some researchers' interest as they play a significant role in constructing partial difference sets, association schemes, bent partitions and linear codes. In this paper, we further study vectorial dual-bent functions $F: V_{n}^{(p)}\rightarrow V_{m}^{(p)}$, where $2\leq m \leq \frac{n}{2}$, $V_{n}^{(p)}$ denotes an $n$-dimensional vector space over the prime field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$. We give new characterizations of certain vectorial dual-bent functions (called vectorial dual-bent functions with Condition A) in terms of amorphic association schemes, linear codes and generalized Hadamard matrices, respectively. When $p=2$, we characterize vectorial dual-bent functions with Condition A in terms of bent partitions. Furthermore, we characterize certain bent partitions in terms of amorphic association schemes, linear codes and generalized Hadamard matrices, respectively. For general vectorial dual-bent functions $F: V_{n}^{(p)}\rightarrow V_{m}^{(p)}$ with $F(0)=0, F(x)=F(-x)$ and $2\leq m \leq \frac{n}{2}$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on constructing association schemes. Based on such a result, more association schemes are constructed from vectorial dual-bent functions.

Abstract:An association scheme is called partially metric if it has a connected relation whose distance-two relation is also a relation of the scheme. In this paper we determine the symmetric partially metric association schemes with a multiplicity three. Besides the association schemes related to regular complete 4-partite graphs, we obtain the association schemes related to the Platonic solids, the bipartite double scheme of the dodecahedron, and three association schemes that are related to well-known 2-arc-transitive covers of the cube: the Möbius–Kantor graph, the Nauru graph, and the Foster graph F048A. In order to obtain this result, we also determine the symmetric association schemes with a multiplicity three and a connected relation with valency three. Moreover, we construct an infinite family of cubic arc-transitive 2-walk-regular graphs with an eigenvalue with multiplicity three that give rise to non-commutative association schemes with a symmetric relation of valency three and an eigenvalue with multiplicity three.
Secondary constructions of vectorial $p$-ary weakly regular bent functions

Abstract:In \cite{Bapic, Tang, Zheng} a new method for the secondary construction of vectorial/Boolean bent functions via the so-called $(P_U)$ property was introduced. In 2018, Qi et al. generalized the methods in \cite{Tang} for the construction of $p$-ary weakly regular bent functions. The objective of this paper is to further generalize these constructions, following the ideas in \cite{Bapic, Zheng}, for secondary constructions of vectorial $p$-ary weakly regular bent and plateaued functions. We also present some infinite families of such functions via the $p$-ary Maiorana-McFarland class. Additionally, we give another characterization of the $(P_U)$ property for the $p$-ary case via second-order derivatives, as it was done for the Boolean case in \cite{Zheng}.

Abstract:We prove the uniqueness of the two association schemes which appear in recent work of Henry Cohn and others in connection with their study of universally optimal spherical codes in Euclidean spaces: one is the class 4 association scheme with 40 vertices in R10 and the other one is the class 3 association scheme with 64 vertices in R14. We prove the uniqueness mainly by geometric considerations with some computational help.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite series of 9-class association schemes from a refinement of the partition of Delsarte-Goethals codes by their Lee weights. The explicit expressions of the dual schemes are determined through direct manipulations of complicated exponential sums. As a byproduct, the other three infinite families of association schemes are also obtained as fusion schemes and quotient schemes.

Abstract:Bivariate P-polynomial association scheme of type $(\alpha,\beta)$ are defined as a generalization of the P-polynomial association schemes. This generalization is shown to be equivalent to a set of conditions on the intersection parameters. A number of known higher rank association schemes are seen to belong to this broad class. Bivariate Q-polynomial association schemes are similarly defined.

Abstract:As maximal, nonlinear Boolean functions, bent functions have many theoretical and practical applications in combinatorics, coding theory, and cryptography. In this paper, we present a construction of bent function \begin{document}$ f_{a,S} $\end{document} with \begin{document}$ n = 2m $\end{document} variables for any nonzero vector \begin{document}$ a\in \mathbb{F}_{2}^{m} $\end{document} and subset \begin{document}$ S $\end{document} of \begin{document}$ \mathbb{F}_{2}^{m} $\end{document} satisfying \begin{document}$ a+S = S $\end{document} . We give a simple expression of the dual bent function of \begin{document}$ f_{a,S} $\end{document} and prove that \begin{document}$ f_{a,S} $\end{document} has optimal algebraic degree \begin{document}$ m $\end{document} if and only if \begin{document}$ |S|\equiv 2 (\bmod 4) $\end{document} . This construction provides a series of bent functions with optimal algebraic degree and large symmetric group if \begin{document}$ a $\end{document} and \begin{document}$ S $\end{document} are chosen properly. We also give some examples of those bent functions \begin{document}$ f_{a,S} $\end{document} and their dual bent functions.

Abstract:A (di)graph $\Gamma$ generates a commutative association scheme $\mathfrak{X}$ if and only if the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ generates the Bose-Mesner algebra of $\mathfrak{X}$. In [17, Theorem 1.1], Monzillo and Penjić proved that, except for amorphic symmetric association schemes, every $3$-class association scheme can be generated by an adjacency matrix of a (di)graph. In this paper, we characterize when a commutative association scheme with exactly one pair of nonsymmetric relations can be generated by a digraph under the certain assumptions. As an application, we show that each nonsymmetric $4$-class association scheme can be generated by a digraph.
