Abstract:We construct twelve infinite families of pseudocyclic and non-amorphic association schemes, in which each nontrivial relation is a strongly regular graph. Three of the twelve families generalize the counterexamples to A. V. Ivanov’s conjecture by Ikuta and Munemasa (Eur J Combin 31:1513–1519, 2010 ).

Abstract:It is well-known that translation schemes of prime order are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this paper, we show that there do not exist any two-, three-, or four-class nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes of prime square order. On the other hand, we find new nonsymmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class association schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song (J Algebr Comb 5:47–55, 1996): are there any other two-class primitive association schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv 5 \hbox { (mod 8)}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive association scheme in the finite field ${\mathbb F}_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang (J Comb Theory Ser A 119:245–256, 2012) admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.
Nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes on prime power number of vertices

Abstract: It is well-known that translation schemes on prime number of vertices are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this current paper, we show that there are no nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes on prime square vertices with at most four classes. On the other hand, we find new non-symmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song \cite{song_2}: Are there any other two-class primitive schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv5 \pmod{8}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive scheme in the finite field $\F_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang in \cite{fx} admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.

Abstract:We find new constructions of infinite families of skew Hadamard difference sets in elementary abelian groups under the assumption of the existence of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs. Our construction is based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields.

Abstract:We revisit the old idea of constructing difference sets from cyclotomic classes. Two constructions of skew Hadamard difference sets are given in the additive groups of finite fields by using union of cyclotomic classes of Fq of order N=2p1m, where p1 is a prime and m a positive integer. Our main tools are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.

Abstract:n [D. de Caen, E.R. van Dam. Fissioned triangular schemes via the cross-ratio, {Europ. J. Combin.}, 22 (2001) 297-301], de Caen and van Dam constructed a fission scheme $\FT(q+1)$ of the triangular scheme on $\PG(1,q)$. This fission scheme comes from the naturally induced action of $\PGL(2,q)$ on the 2-element subsets of $\PG(1,q)$. The group $\PGL(2,q)$ is one of two infinite families of finite sharply 3-transitive groups. The other such family $\Mq(q)$ is a "twisted" version of $\PGL(2,q)$, where $q$ is an even power of an odd prime. The group $\PSL(2,q)$ is the intersection of $\PGL(2,q)$ and $\Mq(q)$. In this paper, we investigate the association schemes coming from the actions of $\PSL(2,q)$, $\Mq(q)$ and $\PML(2,q)$, respectively. Through the conic model introduced in [H.D.L. Hollmann, Q. Xiang. Association schemes from the actions of $\PGL(2, q) $ fixing a nonsingular conic, {J. Algebraic Combin.}, 24 (2006) 157-193], we introduce an embedding of $\PML(2,q)$ into $\PML(3,q)$. For each of the three groups mentioned above, this embedding produces two more isomorphic association schemes: one on hyperbolic lines and the other on hyperbolic points (via a null parity) in a 3-dimensional orthogonal geometry. This embedding enables us to treat these three isomorphic association schemes simultaneously.

Four-class Skew-symmetric Association Schemes

Abstract:An association scheme is called skew-symmetric if it has no symmetric adjacency relations other than the diagonal one. In this paper, we study 4-class skew-symmetric association schemes. In J. Ma [On the nonexistence of skew-symmetric amorphous association schemes, submitted for publication], we discovered that their character tables fall into three types. We now determine their intersection matrices. We then determine the character tables and intersection numbers for 4-class skew-symmetric pseudocyclic association schemes, the only known examples of which are cyclotomic schemes. As a result, we answer a question raised by S. Y. Song [Commutative association schemes whose symmetrizations have two classes, J. Algebraic Combin. 5(1) 47-55, 1996]. We characterize and classify 4-class imprimitive skew-symmetric association schemes. We also prove that no 2-class Johnson scheme can admit a 4-class skew-symmetric fission scheme. Based on three types of character tables above, a short list of feasible parameters is generated.

Abstract:We classify primitive symmetric association schemes with m_1 = 3. Namely, it is shown that the tetrahedron, i.e., the association scheme of the complete graph K_4, is the unique such association scheme. Our proof of this result is based on the spherical embeddings of association schemes and elementary three dimensional Euclidean geometry.

Abstract:We propose in this note the study of quantum channels from association schemes. This is done by interpreting the (0,1)-matrices of a scheme as the Kraus operators of a channel. Working in the framework of one-shot zero-error information theory, we give bounds and closed formulas for various independence numbers of the relative non-commutative (confusability) graphs, or, equivalently, graphical operator systems. We use pseudocyclic association schemes as an example. In this case, we show that the unitary entanglement-assisted independence number grows at least quadratically faster, with respect to matrix size, than the independence number. The latter parameter was introduced by Beigi and Shor as a generalization of the one-shot Shannon capacity, in analogy with the corresponding graph-theoretic notion.

Abstract:We give a sufficient condition for a non-commutative association scheme to have a fusion association scheme, and construct non-commutative association schemes from symmetric balanced generalized weighing matrices and generalized Hadamard matrices. We then apply the criterion to these non-commutative association schemes to obtain symmetric fusion association schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite series of 9-class association schemes from a refinement of the partition of Delsarte-Goethals codes by their Lee weights. The explicit expressions of the dual schemes are determined through direct manipulations of complicated exponential sums. As a byproduct, the other three infinite families of association schemes are also obtained as fusion schemes and quotient schemes.

Abstract:In this paper we study the polynomiality and co-polynomiality of association schemes. These two notions were introduced by Ito. We show that P-polynomial association schemes are co-polynomial and Q-polynomial association schemes are polynomial. We also determine the polynomiality and co-polynomiality for 3-class association schemes. Further we give examples of association schemes that are polynomial but not co-polynomial, or co-polynomial but not polynomial.

Abstract:An association scheme is called partially metric if it has a connected relation whose distance-two relation is also a relation of the scheme. In this paper we determine the symmetric partially metric association schemes with a multiplicity three. Besides the association schemes related to regular complete 4-partite graphs, we obtain the association schemes related to the Platonic solids, the bipartite double scheme of the dodecahedron, and three association schemes that are related to well-known 2-arc-transitive covers of the cube: the Möbius–Kantor graph, the Nauru graph, and the Foster graph F048A. In order to obtain this result, we also determine the symmetric association schemes with a multiplicity three and a connected relation with valency three. Moreover, we construct an infinite family of cubic arc-transitive 2-walk-regular graphs with an eigenvalue with multiplicity three that give rise to non-commutative association schemes with a symmetric relation of valency three and an eigenvalue with multiplicity three.

Abstract:Association schemes on triples (ASTs) are 3-dimensional analogues of classical association schemes. If a group acts two-transitively on a set, the orbits of the action induced on the triple Cartesian product of that set yields an AST. By considering the actions of semidirect products of the affine special linear group ASL(k,n) with subgroups of the Galois group Gal(GF(n)), we obtain the sizes, third valencies, and intersection numbers of the ASTs obtained from subgroups of the affine special semilinear group.

Abstract:Association schemes play an important role in algebraic combinatorics and have important applications in coding theory, graph theory and design theory. The methods to construct association schemes by using bent functions have been extensively studied. Recently, in [13], {Ö}zbudak and Pelen constructed infinite families of symmetric association schemes of classes $5$ and $6$ by using ternary non-weakly regular bent functions.They also stated that constructing $2p$-class association schemes from $p$-ary non-weakly regular bent functions is an interesting problem, where $p>3$ is an odd prime. In this paper, using non-weakly regular bent functions, we construct infinite families of symmetric association schemes of classes $2p$, $(2p+1)$ and $\frac{3p+1}{2}$ for any odd prime $p$. Fusing those association schemes, we also obtain $t$-class symmetric association schemes, where $t=4,5,6,7$. In addition, we give the sufficient and necessary conditions for the partitions $P$, $D$, $T$, $U$ and $V$ (defined in this paper) to induce symmetric association schemes.

Abstract:An association scheme is called quasi-thin if the valency of each its basic relation is one or two. A quasi-thin scheme is Kleinian if the thin residue of it forms a Klein group with respect to the relation product. It is proved that any Kleinian scheme arises from near-pencil on~$3$ points, or affine or projective plane of order~$2$. The main result is that any non-Kleinian quasi-thin scheme a) is the two-orbit scheme of a suitable permutation group, and b) is characterized up to isomorphism by its intersection number array. An infinite family of Kleinian quasi-thin schemes for which neither a) nor b) holds is also constructed.

Abstract:Association schemes on triples (ASTs) are ternary analogues of classical association schemes, whose relations and adjacency algebras are ternary instead of binary. We provide a survey of the current progress in the study of ASTs, highlighting open questions, suggesting research directions, and producing some related results. We review properties of the ternary adjacency algebras of ASTs, ASTs whose relations are invariant under some group action, and ASTs obtained from 2-designs and two-graphs. We also provide a notion of fusion and fission ASTs, using the AST obtained from the affine special linear group $ASL(2,q)$ as an example.

Families of Association Schemes on Triples from Two-Transitive Groups

Abstract:Association schemes on triples (ASTs) are ternary analogues of classical association schemes. Analogous to Schurian association schemes, ASTs arise from the actions of two-transitive groups. In this paper, we obtain the sizes and third valencies of the ASTs obtained from the two-transitive permutation groups by determining the orbits of the groups' two-point stabilizers. Specifically, we obtain these parameters for the ASTs obtained from the actions of $S_n$ and $A_n$, $PGU(3,q)$, $PSU(3,q)$, and $Sp(2k,2)$, $Sz(2^{2k+1})$ and $Ree(3^{2k+1})$, some subgroups of $A\Gamma L(k,n)$, some subgroups of $P\Gamma L(k,n)$, and the sporadic two-transitive groups. Further, we obtain the intersection numbers for the ASTs obtained from these subgroups of $P\Gamma L(k,n)$ and $A \Gamma L(k,n)$, and the sporadic two-transitive groups. In particular, the ASTs from these projective and sporadic groups are commutative.
