Abstract:In the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model of M theory in the presence of longitudinal $M5$-brane, we investigate the effective dynamics of the system by considering the longitudinal $M5$-brane as the background and the spherical $M5$-brane related with the other space dimensions as the probe brane. Due to there exists the background field strength provided by the source of the longitudinal $M5$-brane, an open membrane should be ended on the spherical $M5$-brane based on the topological reason. The formation of the bound brane configuration for the open membrane ending on the 5-branes in the background of longitudinal 5-brane can be used to model the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The description of the excitations of the quantum Hall soliton brane configuration is established by investigating the fluctuations of $D0$-branes living on the bound brane around their classical solution derived by the transformations of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the open membrane. We find that this effective field theory for the fluctuations is an SO(4) non-commutative Chern-Simons field theory. The matrix regularized version of this effective field theory is given in order to allow the finite $D0$-branes to live on the bound brane. We also discuss some possible applications of our results to the related topics in M-theory and to the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system.
Global stability of the open Milne spacetime

Abstract:The open Milne cosmological spacetime has a 3-dimensional Cauchy surface isometric to the (non-compact) hyperbolic space. We prove the globally nonlinear stability of the open Milne spacetime for both massive and massless Einstein-scalar field equations and show that as time goes to infinity, the spatial metric tends to the hyperbolic metric. The proof is based on the Gaussian normal coordinates, in which the decay rates of gravity are determined by the expanding geometry of Milne spacetime.

Abstract:We investigate a 6D generalized Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario with a bulk cosmological constant. Each stress-energy tensor T-ab(i) on the brane is shown to be similar to a constant vacuum energy. This is consistent with the Randall-Sundrum model, in which each 3-brane Lagrangian yielded a constant vacuum energy. By adopting an anisotropic metric ansatz, we obtain the 5D Friedmann-Robertson-Walker field equations. In a slightly later period, the expansion of the universe is proportional to the square root of time, t(1/2), which is similar to the period of the radiation-dominated regime. Moreover, we investigate the case with two a(t) and two b(t). In a large range of t, we obtain the 3D effective cosmological constant Lambda(eff) = 2 Omega/3 > 0, which is independent of the integral constant. Here, the scale factor is an exponential expansion, which is consistent with our present observation of the universe. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to construct a model that solves the dark energy problem, while guaranteeing a positive brane tension.

A CMC existence result for expanding cosmological spacetimes

Abstract:We establish a new CMC (constant mean curvature) existence result for cosmological spacetimes, i.e., globally hyperbolic spacetimes with compact Cauchy surfaces satisfying the strong energy condition. If the spacetime contains an expanding Cauchy surface and is future timelike geodesically complete, then the spacetime contains a CMC Cauchy surface. This result settles, under certain circumstances, a conjecture of the authors and a conjecture of Dilts and Holst. Our proof relies on the construction of barriers in the support sense, and the CMC Cauchy surface is found as the asymptotic limit of mean curvature flow. Analogous results are also obtained in the case of a positive cosmological constant $\Lambda > 0$. Lastly, we include some comments concerning the future causal boundary for cosmological spacetimes which pertain to the CMC conjecture of the authors.

Abstract:We analyze finite size solutions for a generalized D -dimensional Dudas-Mourad (DM) model featuring dynamical cobordism with neutral and charged end-of-the-world (ETW) defect branes. Confirming a dynamical version of the Cobordism Conjecture, we explicitly construct non-isotropic solutions for the latter codimension one branes and show the appearance of a lower bound for the critical exponent in the scaling behavior of the distance and the curvature close to the wall. This allows us to make a connection to the (sharpened) Swampland Distance Conjecture and the (Anti-) de Sitter Distance Conjecture. Moreover, BPS orientifold planes appear as special cases in our analysis and the whole picture is consistent with dimensional reduction from ten to D dimensions. An analogous analysis is performed for a generalized Blumenhagen-Font (BF) model featuring neutral codimension two ETW-branes where the same lower bound for the scaling parameter δ arises.

Moduli Dynamics in Effective Nested Warped Geometry in Four Dimensions and Some Cosmological Implications

Abstract:We analyze the effective four-dimensional dynamics of the extra-dimensional moduli fields in curved braneworlds having nested warping, with particular emphasis on the doubly warped model which is interesting in the light of current collider constraints on the mass of the Kaluza-Klein graviton. The presence of a non-zero brane cosmological constant ($\Omega$) naturally induces an effective moduli potential in the four-dimensional action, which shows distinct features in dS ($\Omega>0$) and AdS ($\Omega<0$) branches. For the observationally interesting case of dS 4-branes, a metastable minimum in the potential arises along the first modulus, with no minima along the higher moduli. The underlying nested geometry also leads to interesting separable forms of the non-canonical kinetic terms in the Einstein frame, where the brane curvature directly impacts the kinetic properties of only the first modulus. The non-canonicity of the scenario has been illustrated via an explicit computation of the field space curvature. We subsequently explore the ability of curved multiply warped geometries to drive inflation with an in-built exit mechanism, by considering predominant slow roll along each modular direction on a case-by-case basis. We find slow roll on top of the metastable plateau along the first modular direction to be the most viable scenario, with the higher-dimensional moduli parametrically tuning the height of the potential without significant impact on the inflationary observables. On the other hand, while slow roll along the higher moduli can successfully inflate the background and eventually lead to an exit, consistency with observations seemingly requires unphysical hierarchies among the extra-dimensional radii, thus disfavouring such scenarios.

Abstract:Dynamical Cobordism provides a powerful method to probe infinite distance limits in moduli/field spaces parameterized by scalars constrained by generic potentials, employing configurations of codimension-1 end of the world (ETW) branes. These branes, characterized in terms of critical exponents, mark codimension-1 boundaries in the spacetime in correspondence of finite spacetime distance singularities at which the scalars diverge. Using these tools, we explore the network of infinite distance singularities in the complex structure moduli space of Calabi-Yau fourfolds compactifications in M-theory with a four-form flux turned on, which is described in terms of normal intersecting divisors classified by asymptotic Hodge theory. We provide spacetime realizations for these loci in terms of networks of intersecting codimension-1 ETW branes classified by specific critical exponents which encapsulate the relevant information of the asymptotic Hodge structure characterizing the corresponding divisors.

The cosmological constant and the weak gravity conjecture

Abstract:We examine the descent via membrane nucleation through a landscape of vacua where the cosmological constant is given by a combination of four-form fluxes. It has been shown that this descent can be slowed exponentially for very low curvature vacua close to Minkowski space in a wide class of models satisfying certain parametric conditions, providing a possible solution to the cosmological constant problem. We explore in detail whether or not those parametric conditions are compatible with the membrane weak gravity conjecture. Whilst it is true that there is often tension, we show that this is not always the case and present an explicit model where Minkowski space is absolutely stable and the weak gravity conjecture is satisfied. This corresponds to an extension of the Bousso-Polchinski model into a generalised DBI action for four-forms. We also clarify how the landscape should be populated in a consistent model.

Abstract:General covariant unimodular gravity frameworks, based on the Henneaux-Teitelboim formulation, are, in disguise, precisely $4$-form field theories corrected with higher dimension operators. In the presence of charged tensional membranes, any de Sitter space in all such theories is unstable and decays. If the fluxes sourced by membranes are mutually incommensurate, de Sitter geometries comprise a very refined discretuum of states. Whenever the $4$-form sector is dominated by terms linear in flux the almost-Minkowski space is the unique long-time attractor. As a result, a tiny cosmological constant is natural in all such frameworks, without appealing to anthropic reasoning.

Abstract:Milne-like spacetimes are a class of hyperbolic FLRW spacetimes which admit continuous spacetime extensions through the big bang, $\tau = 0$. The existence of the extension follows from writing the metric in conformal Minkowskian coordinates and assuming that the scale factor satisfies $a(\tau) = \tau + o(\tau^{1+\varepsilon})$ as $\tau \to 0$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$. This asymptotic assumption implies $a(\tau) = \tau + o(\tau)$. In this paper, we show that $a(\tau) = \tau + o(\tau)$ is not sufficient to achieve an extension through $\tau = 0$, but it is necessary provided its derivative converges as $\tau \to 0$. We also show that the $\varepsilon$ in $a(\tau) = \tau + o(\tau^{1+\varepsilon})$ is not necessary to achieve an extension through $\tau = 0$.

Stability of the Double-Cusp Spacetimes and long-time geometrizations

Abstract:Since the early years of General Relativity, understanding the long-time behavior of the cosmological solutions of Einstein's vacuum equations has been a fundamental yet challenging task. Solutions with global symmetries, or perturbations thereof, have been extensively studied and are reasonably understood. On the other hand, thanks to the work of Fischer-Moncrief and M. Anderson, it is known that there is a tight relation between the future evolution of solutions and the Thurston decomposition of the spatial 3-manifold. Consequently, cosmological spacetimes developing a future asymptotic symmetry should represent only a negligible part of a much larger yet unexplored solution landscape. In this work, we revisit a program initiated by the second named author, aimed at constructing a new type of cosmological solution first posed by M. Anderson, where (at the right scale) two hyperbolic manifolds with a cusp separate from each other through a thin torus neck. Specifically, we prove that the so-called double-cusp solution, which models the torus neck, is stable under $S^1 \times S^1$ - symmetry-preserving perturbations. The proof, which has interest on its own, reduces to proving the stability of a geodesic segment as a wave map into the hyperbolic plane and partially relates to the work of Sideris on wave maps and the work of Ringström on the future asymptotics of Gowdy spacetimes.

Abstract:Dynamical cancellation frameworks present a potential means of mitigating the effect of a large vacuum energy, that would otherwise ruin the late-time, low energy dynamics of the Universe. Certain models in the literature, such as the Fab Four and Well Tempering, realize this idea by introducing some degeneracy in the dynamical equations. In this paper, we introduce a third potential route to self-tuning, and infer the existence of a new, exact Milne solution in the simplest tadpole plus cubic-Galileon scalar-tensor theory. We study the dynamics of the scalar field and metric in the vicinity of the Milne coordinate singularity, and find that the vacuum solution belongs to a more general family of Milne-like metrics. By numerically evolving the field equations for a range of initial conditions, we show that the Milne solution is not an attractor, and varying the initial scalar field data can lead to completely different asymptotic states; exponential growth of the scale factor, a static non-spatially flat metric or a severe finite-time instability in the scalar field and metric. We generalise the Milne solution to a class of FLRW spacetimes, finding that the tadpole-cubic Galileon model admits perfect-fluid-like solutions in the presence of matter. Finally, we present a second Horndeski model which also admits an exact Milne solution, hinting at the existence of a larger undiscovered model space containing vacuum-energy-screened solutions.
