Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity of closed, convex surfaces which achieve maximal affine area among all the closed, convex surfaces enclosed in a given domain in the Euclidean 3-space. We prove the C 1, α regularity for general domains and C 1,1 regularity if the domain is uniformly convex.

Abstract:By using curvature estimates, we prove that a complete non-compact hypersurface M with constant mean curvature and finiteL n -norm curvature in R n+1 must be minimal, so that M is a hyperplane if it is strongly stable. This is a generalization of the result on stable complete minimal hypersurfaces of R n+1. Moreover, complete strongly stable hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and finite L 1-norm curvature in R n+1 are considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we give several results on area minimizing surfaces in strictly mean convex 3-manifolds. First, we study the genus of absolutely area minimizing surfaces in a compact, orientable, strictly mean convex 3-manifold M bounded by a simple closed curve in the boundary of M. Our main result is that for any g>=0, the space of simple closed curves in the boundary of M where all the absolutely area minimizing surfaces they bound in M has genus >=g is open and dense in the space A of nullhomologous simple closed curves in the boundary of M. For showing this we prove a bridge principle for absolutely area minimizing surfaces. Moreover, we show that for any g>=0, there exists a curve in A such that the minimum genus of the absolutely area minimizing surfaces it bounds is exactly g. As an application of these results, we further prove that the simple closed curves in the boundary of M bounding more than one minimal surface in M is an open and dense subset of A. We also show that there are disjoint simple closed curves in the boundary of M bounding minimal surfaces in M which are not disjoint. This allows us to answer a question of Meeks, by showing that for any strictly mean convex 3-manifold M, there exists a simple closed curve \Gamma in the boundary of M which bounds a stable minimal surface which is not embedded.

Areas of spherical polyhedral surfaces with regular faces.

Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.
Quasi Normality and PL Approximation of Least Area Surfaces in 3-Manifolds

Abstract:This} paper presents relations between least area and normal surfaces, embedded in either a Euclidean or hyperbolic $3$-manifold. A relaxed version of normal surfaces, termed quasi-normal, is introduced, and it is shown that under appropriate conditions, every embedded least area surface is quasi-normal with respect to a fine enough fat triangulation of the $3$-manifold. In addition, it is shown that the intersections of a least area surface with the tetrahedra of such fine enough triangulation, even when not as simple as in the case of normal surfaces, are also well behaved. Finally, it is shown that a least area surface, when considered as a quasi normal surface, gives rise to a sequence of piecewise flat surfaces termed as flat-associated surfaces, and this sequence converges to the given least area surface and approximates its area.

Existence and regularity of min-max anisotropic minimal hypersurfaces

Abstract:In any closed smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, we use the min-max construction to find anisotropic minimal hyper-surfaces with respect to elliptic integrands, with a singular set of codimension~$2$ vanishing Hausdorff measure. In particular, in a closed $3$-manifold, we obtain a smooth anisotropic minimal surface. The critical step is to obtain a uniform upper bound for density ratios in the anisotropic min-max construction. This confirms a conjecture by Allard [Invent. Math., 1983].

Abstract:We develop an analytic theory of existence and regularity of surfaces (given by graphs) arising from the geometric minimization problem $$\min_{\mathcal{M}}\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathcal{M}}|\nabla_{\mathcal{M}}H|^2\,dA$$ where $\mathcal{M}$ ranges over all $n$-dimensional manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with prescribed boundary, $\nabla_{\mathcal{M}}H$ is the tangential gradient along $\mathcal{M}$ of the mean curvature $H$ of $\mathcal{M}$ and $dA$ is the differential of surface area. The minimizers, called surfaces of minimum mean curvature variation, are central in applications of computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing and mechanics. Our main results show the existence of both smooth surfaces and of variational solutions to the minimization problem together with geometric regularity results. These are the first analytic results available on the literature for this problem.

Abstract:Generalizing the notion of domains of dependence in the Minkowski space, we define and study regular domains in the affine space with respect to a proper convex cone. In dimension three, we show that every proper regular domain is uniquely foliated by a particular kind of surfaces with constant affine Gaussian curvature. The result is based on the analysis of a Monge-Amp\`ere equation with extended-real-valued lower semicontinuous boundary condition.

Abstract:It is conjectured since long that for any convex body $P\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ there exists a point in its interior which belongs to at least $2n$ normals from different points on the boundary of $P$. The conjecture is known to be true for $n=2,3,4$. We treat the same problem for convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^3$. It turns out that the PL concurrent normals problem differs a lot from the smooth one. One almost immediately proves that a convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^3$ has $8$ normals to its boundary emanating from some point in its interior. Moreover, we conjecture that each simple polytope in $\mathbb{R}^3$ has a point in its interior with $10$ normals to the boundary. We confirm the conjecture for all tetrahedra and triangular prisms and give a sufficient condition for a simple polytope to have a point with $10$ normals. Other related topics (average number of normals, minimal number of normals from an interior point, other dimensions) are discussed.

Abstract:We study area-minimizing hypersurfaces in singular ambient manifolds whose tangent cones have nonnegative scalar curvature on their regular parts. We prove that the singular set of the hypersurface has codimension at least 3 in our settings. We also give an example in which n-dimensional minimizing hypersurface in an ambient space as given above may have singularities of dimension $n-3$. This shows that our regularity result is sharp.

Abstract:Let N be a three dimensional Riemannian manifold. Let E be a closed embedded surface in N. Then it is a question of basic interest to see whether one can deform : in its isotopy class to some canonical embedded surface. From the point of view of geometry, a natural canonical surface will be the extremal surface of some functional defined on the space of embedded surfaces. The simplest functional is the area functional. The extremal surface of the area functional is called the minimal surface. Such minimal surfaces were used extensively by Meeks-Yau [MY21 in studying group actions on three dimensional manifolds. In [MY2], the theory of minimal surfaces was used to simplify and strengthen the classical Dehn's lemma, loop theorem and the sphere theorem. In the setting there, one minimizes area among all immersed surfaces and proves that the extremal object is embedded. In this paper, we minimize area among all embedded surfaces isotopic to a fixed embedded surface. In the category of these surfaces, we prove a general existence theorem (Theorem 1). A particular consequence of this theorem is that for irreducible manifolds an embedded incompressible surface is isotopic to an embedded incompressible surface with minimal area. We also prove that there exists an embedded sphere of least area enclosing a fake cell, provided the complementary volume is not a standard ball, and provided there exists no embedded one-sided RP2. By making use of the last result, and a cutting and pasting argument, we are able to settle a well-known problem in the theory of three dimensional manifolds. On the regularity of area minimizing currents at boundaries with arbitrary multiplicity

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an area-minimizing integral $m$-current $T$, within a submanifold $\Sigma \in C^{3,\kappa}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$, with arbitrary boundary multiplicity $\partial T = Q[\![\Gamma]\!]$, where $\Gamma\subset\Sigma$ of class $C^{3,\kappa}$. We prove that the set of density $Q/2$ boundary singular points of $T$ is $\mathcal{H}^{m-3}$-rectifiable. This result generalizes Allard's boundary regularity theorem to a higher multiplicity setting. In particular, if $\Gamma$ is a closed manifold which lies at the boundary of a uniformly convex set $\Omega$ and $\Sigma=\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$ the whole boundary singular set is $\mathcal{H}^{m-3}$ -rectifiable. As a structural consequence of our regularity theory, we show that the boundary regular set, without any assumptions on the density, is open and dense in $\Gamma$.

Geodesics on Regular Constant Distance Surfaces

Abstract:Suppose that the surfaces K0 and Kr are the boundaries of two convex, complete, connected C^2 bodies in R^3. Assume further that the (Euclidean) distance between any point x in Kr and K0 is always r (r > 0). For x in Kr, let {\Pi}(x) denote the nearest point to x in K0. We show that the projection {\Pi} preserves geodesics in these surfaces if and only if both surfaces are concentric spheres or co-axial round cylinders. This is optimal in the sense that the main step to establish this result is false for C^{1,1} surfaces. Finally, we give a non-trivial example of a geodesic preserving projection of two C^2 non-constant distance surfaces. The question whether for any C^2 convex surface S0, there is a surface S whose projection to S0 preserves geodesics is open.

Homologically area-minimizing surfaces with non-smoothable singularities

Abstract:Let dimensions $d \ge 3$ and codimensions $c \ge 3$ be positive integers, and define the exceptional set $E = \{3, 4\}$. We prove that, for $d \notin E$ with arbitrary $c$, or for $d \in E$ with $c \le d$, for any $d$-dimensional integral homology class $[\Sigma]$ on a compact (not necessarily orientable) $(d+c)$-dimensional smooth manifold $M$, there exist open sets $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$ in the space of smooth Riemannian metrics such that all area-minimizing integral currents in $[\Sigma]$ are singular for metrics in $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$. This resolves a conjecture by White regarding the generic regularity of area-minimizing surfaces and provides a sharp dimension-wise answer. As a corollary, we determine the moduli space of area-minimizing currents in the vicinity of any area-minimizing transverse immersion with dimension $d \ge 3$ and codimension $c \ge 3$ that satisfies an angle condition of asymptotically sharp order in $d$. Analogous conclusions apply to mod $2$ area-minimizing surfaces.

Abstract:We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least 2 pi. The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic graphs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In the present work, we consider area minimizing currents in the general setting of arbitrary codimension and arbitrary boundary multiplicity. We study the boundary regularity of 2d area minimizing currents, beyond that, several results are stated in the more general context of $(C_0, \alpha_0, r_0)$-almost area minimizing currents of arbitrary dimension $m$ and arbitrary codimension taking the boundary with arbitrary multiplicity. Furthermore, we do not consider any type of convex barrier assumption on the boundary, in our main regularity result which states that the regular set, which includes one-sided and two-sided points, of any 2d area minimizing current $T$ is an open dense set in the boundary.
