Abstract:Determining the topology of an algebraic surface is not only an interesting mathematical problem, but also a key issue in computer graphics and CAGD. An algorithm is proposed to determine the intrinsic topology of an implicit real algebraic surface f(x,y,z) = 0 in R3, where f(x,y,z) ∈ Q[x,y,z] and Q is the field of rational numbers. There exist algorithms to determine the topology for algebraic surfaces of special type [2, 3, 4, 7]. The CAD method proposed by Collins [1] can divide the space into cylindrical parts. But it does not give the connection information neither the intrinsic representation.

Abstract:This paper deals with superminimal surfaces in complex space forms by using theFrenet framing. We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

Abstract:By using the interior curvature estimate and Gromov's compactness theorem, we prove that a stable complete minimal hypersurface in R n +1 with finite total scalar curvature must be a hyperplane. This extends the result obtained by P. Bérard in Remarques sur l'équation de J. Simons, Pitman Monographs Surveys Pure Appl. Math. , vol. 52, 1991, pp. 47-57.

Abstract:In terms of the almost complex connection and the unitary moving frame, a complex version on the theory of the nearly Kahler structure in S-6 is given. Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:In this paper, I will mention some applications of minimal surfaces to the geometry and topology of three-manifolds that I discussed in my lecture at the Current Developments in Mathematics Conference for 2004. The rst important application of minimal surfaces to the geometry of three-manifolds was given by Schoen and Yau [22] in their study of Riemannian three-manifolds of positive scalar curvature and their related proof of the positive mass conjecture in general relativity. The techniques that they developed in their proof of this conjecture continue to be useful in studying relationships between stable minimal surfaces and the topology of Riemannian manifolds. Around 1978, Meeks and Yau gave geometric versions of three classical theorems in three-dimensional topology. These classical theorems concern the existence of certain embedded surfaces. In the geometric versions of these theorems, Meeks and Yau proved the existence of essentially cononical solutions, which are given by area minimizing surfaces. They referred to these theorems as the Geometric Dehn’s Lemma, Geometric Loop Theorem and the Geometric Sphere Theorem. As an application of these special geometric minimal surface solutions to these classical topological theorems, Meeks and Yau gave new equivariant versions of these theorems in the presence of a dieren tial nite group action. Their Equivariant Loop Theorem turned out to be the nal missing step in the solution of the Smith Conjecture concerning the standardness of the smooth action of nite cyclic groups on the three-sphere S 3 . Classification of Minimal Separating Sets of Low Genus Surfaces

Abstract:A minimal separating set in a connected topological space $X$ is a subset $L \subset X$ with the property that $X \setminus L$ is disconnected, but if $L^{\prime}$ is a proper subset of $L$, then $X \setminus L^{\prime}$ is connected. Such sets show up in a variety of contexts. For example, in a wide class of metric spaces, if we choose distinct points p and q, then the set of points x satisfying d(x, p) = d(x, q) is a minimal separating set. In this paper we classify which topological graphs can be realized as minimal separating sets in surfaces of low genus. In general the question of whether a graph can be embedded at all in a surface is a difficult one, so our work is partly computational. We classify graphs embeddings which are minimal separating in a given genus and write a computer program to find all such embeddings and their underlying graphs.

Abstract:IN 1970 Lawson [22] proved that two embedded closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in the unit three-dimensional sphere S3 in lRJ are ambiently isotopic in S3. Lawson proved this theorem by first proving that an embedded orientable closed minimal surface of genus y in a closed orientable Riemannian three-manifold M’ with positive Ricci curvature disconnects M-’ into two genus-8 handlebodics. A result of Frankel [7] was used to prove this. Lawson then applied a deep result of Waldhauscn [33] that states that decompositions of SJ into two genus-cl handlebodies arc unique up to ambient isotopy. More prcciscly. Waldhauscn’s uniqucncss thcorcm states that whenever a closed surface of genus y in S” separates SJ into handlcbodics, then the embedding of the surface is as simple as possible; in other words, the surface is obtained from a two-sphere Sz c S’ by adding handles in an unknotted manner. Mccks [23] gcncralizcd Lawson’s argument to the case of oricntablc closed minimal surfaces in a closed ,V3 with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Meek’s result and another topological uniqueness result of Waldhauscn [33] implies that two closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in S2 x S’ with the usual product metric arc ambiently isotopic. Finally, Meeks-Simon-Yau [25] proved that if X is a closed minimal surface in S’ equipped with a metric of non-negative scalar curvature, then X disconnects S3 into two handlebodies and hence dctcrmincs a unique ambient class in S’. In [23] Mceks considered the problem of the topological uniqueness of minimal surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space. In particular, Meeks proved that any two compact diffeomorphic minimal surfaces, with boundary a simple closed curve on the boundary of a smooth convex ball, are ambiently isotopic in the ball. Later Hall [I33 showed that there exist two simple closed curves on the unit sphere S* that bound a knotted minimal surface of genus one. In this paper we will use global properties of stable minimal surfaces in [w’ to prove: A properly embedded minimal surface of finite topological type in R’ is unknotted. In particular, if X, and IEz are two such diffeomorphic surfaces, then they are ambiently isotopic. This is the main result of our paper and it is restated in a more precise form in Theorem 5.1. Abstract:Near the end of his life, Bernhard Riemann made the marvelous discovery of a 1-parameter family $R_{\lambda}$, $\lambda\in (0,\infty)$, of periodic properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the property that every horizontal plane intersects each of his examples in either a circle or a straight line. Furthermore, as the parameter $\lambda\to 0$ his surfaces converge to a vertical catenoid and as $\lambda\to \infty$ his surfaces converge to a vertical helicoid. Since Riemann's minimal examples are topologically planar domains that are periodic with the fundamental domains for the associated $\mathbb{Z}$-action being diffeomorphic to a compact annulus punctured in a single point, then topologically each of these surfaces is diffeomorphic to the unique genus zero surface with two limit ends. Also he described his surfaces analytically in terms of elliptic functions on rectangular elliptic curves. This article exams Riemann's original proof of the classification of minimal surfaces foliated by circles and lines in parallel planes and presents a complete outline of the recent proof that every properly embedded minimal planar domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is either a Riemann minimal example, a catenoid, a helicoid or a plane.

Abstract:This book provides a self-contained introduction to the topology and geometry of surfaces and three-manifolds. The main goal is to describe Thurston's geometrisation of three-manifolds, proved by Perelman in 2002. The book is divided into three parts: the first is devoted to hyperbolic geometry, the second to surfaces, and the third to three-manifolds. It contains complete proofs of Mostow's rigidity, the thick-thin decomposition, Thurston's classification of the diffeomorphisms of surfaces (via Bonahon's geodesic currents), the prime and JSJ decomposition, the topological and geometric classification of Seifert manifolds, and Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling Theorem.

Abstract:Minimal surfaces are among the most natural objects in Differential Geometry, and have been studied for the past 250 years ever since the pioneering work of Lagrange. The subject is characterized by a profound beauty, but perhaps even more remarkably, minimal surfaces (or minimal submanifolds) have encountered striking applications in other fields, like three-dimensional topology, mathematical physics, conformal geometry, among others. Even though it has been the subject of intense activity, many basic open problems still remain. In this lecture we will survey recent advances in this area and discuss some future directions. We will give special emphasis to the variational aspects of the theory as well as to the applications to other fields.
Topological control for min-max free boundary minimal surfaces

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Abstract:These notes outline recent developments in classical minimal surface theory that are essential in classifying the properly embedded minimal planar domains M in R^3 with infinite topology (equivalently, with an infinite number of ends). This final classification result by Meeks, Perez, and Ros states that such an M must be congruent to a homothetic scaling of one of the classical examples found by Riemann in 1860. These examples {\cal R}_s, 0<s<\infty, are defined in terms of the Weierstrass {\cal P}-functions {\cal P}_t on the rectangular elliptic curve {\C} / {< 1, t\sqrt{-1}>}, are singly-periodic and intersect each horizontal plane in R^3 in a circle or a line parallel to the x-axis. Earlier work by Collin, Lopez and Ros and Meeks and Rosenberg demonstrate that the plane, the catenoid and the helicoid are the only properly embedded minimal surfaces of genus zero with finite topology (equivalently, with a finite number of ends). Since the surfaces {\cal R}_s converge to a catenoid as s tends to 0 and to a helicoid as s tends to infinity, then the moduli space {\cal M} of all properly embedded, non-planar, minimal planar domains in R^3 is homeomorphic to the closed unit interval [0,1].

Abstract:In this treatise, we discuss existence and uniqueness questions for parametric minimal surfaces in Riemannian spaces, which represent minimal graphs. We choose the Riemannian metric suitably such that the variational solution of the Riemannian Dirichlet integral under Dirichlet boundary conditions possesses a one-to-one projection onto a plane. At first we concentrate our considerations on existence results for boundary value problems. Then we study uniqueness questions for boundary value problems and for complete minimal graphs. Here we establish curvature estimates for minimal graphs on discs, which imply Bernstein-type results.

Abstract:If a finite group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 3-dimensional torus leaves invariant an oriented, closed, embedded surface of genus g>1 and preserves the orientation of the surface, then its order is bounded from above by 12(g-1). In the present paper we classify (up to conjugation) all such group actions and surfaces for which the maximal possible order 12(g-1) is achieved, and note that the unknotted surfaces can be realized by equivariant minimal surfaces in a 3-torus.

Abstract:We study minimal graphs in the homogeneous Riemannian 3-manifold $\widetilde{PSL_2(\mathbb{R})}$ and we give examples of invariant surfaces. We derive a gradient estimate for solutions of the minimal surface equation in this space and develop the machinery necessary to prove a Jenkins-Serrin type theorem for solutions defined over bounded domains of the hyperbolic plane.
