Abstract:Given a measured geodesic lamination on a hyperbolic surface, grafting the surface along multiples of the lamination defines a path in Teichmuller space, called the grafting ray. We show that every grafting ray, after reparametrization, is a Teichmuller quasi-geodesic and stays in a bounded neighborhood of a Teichmuller geodesic. As part of our approach, we show that grafting rays have controlled dependence on the starting point. That is, for any measured geodesic lamination Lambda, the map of Teichmuller space which is defined by grafting along Lambda is L-Lipschitz with respect to the Teichmuller metric, where L is a universal constant. This Lipschitz property follows from an extension of grafting to an open neighborhood of Teichmuller space in the space of quasi-Fuchsian groups.

Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface with finitely many punctures Sigma, let S(Sigma) be the set of isotopy classes of essential unoriented simple closed curves in Sigma. We determine a complete set of relations for a function from S(Sigma) to R to be the geodesic length function of a hyperbolic metric with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on Sigma. As a consequence, the Teichmuller space of hyperbolic metrics with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on Sigma is reconstructed explicitly from an intrinsic (QP(1), PSL(2, Z)) structure on S(Sigma).

Abstract:A significant theorem of L\"uck says that the first $L^2$-Betti number of the total space of a fibration vanishes under some conditions on the fundamental groups. The proof is based on constructions on chain complexes. In the present paper, we translate the proof into the world of CW-complexes to make it more accessible.

Abstract:Let $\lambda_-$ and $\lambda_+$ be two bounded measured laminations on the hyperbolic disk $\mathbb H^2$, which "strongly fill" (definition below). We consider the left earthquakes along $\lambda_-$ and $\lambda_+$, considered as maps from the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$ to itself, and we prove that the composition of those left earthquakes has a fixed point. The proof uses anti-de Sitter geometry. Given a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism $u:{\mathbb RP}^1\to {\mathbb RP}^1$, the boundary of the convex hull in $AdS^3$ of its graph in ${\mathbb RP}^1\times{\mathbb RP}^1\simeq \partial AdS^3$ is the disjoint union of two embedded copies of the hyperbolic plane, pleated along measured geodesic laminations. Our main result is that any pair of bounded measured laminations that "strongly fill" can be obtained in this manner.

Divergent geodesics in the Universal Teichmüller space

Abstract:Thurston boundary of the universal Teichmüller space $T(\mathbb{D})$ is the space $PML_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$ of projective bounded measured laminations of $\mathbb{D}$. A geodesic ray in $T(\mathbb{D})$ is of generalized Teichmüller type if it shrinks the vertical foliation of a holomorphic quadratic differential. We provide the first examples of generalized Teichmüller rays which diverge near Thurston boundary $PLM_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$. Moreover, for every $k\geq 1$ we construct examples of rays with limit sets homeomorphic to $k$-dimensional cubes. For the latter result we utilize the classical Kronecker approximation theorem from number theory which states that if $\theta_1,\ldots,\theta_k$ are rationally independent reals then the sequence $(\{\theta_1 n\},\ldots,\{\theta_k n\})$ is dense in the $k$-torus $\mathbb{T}^k$.

Abstract:We strengthen the unpublished theorem of Gabai and Mosher that every depth one sutured manifold contains a very full dynamic branched surface by showing that the branched surface can be chosen to satisfy an additional property we call veering. To this end we prove that every endperiodic map admits a periodic splitting sequence of train tracks carrying its positive Handel-Miller lamination. This completes step one of Gabai-Mosher's unpublished two-step proof that every taut finite depth foliation of a compact, oriented, atoroidal 3-manifold is almost transverse to a pseudo-Anosov flow. Further, a veering branched surface in a sutured manifold is a generalization of a veering triangulation, and we extend some of the theory of veering triangulations to this setting. In particular we show that the branched surfaces we construct are unique up to a natural equivalence relation, and give an algorithmic way to compute the foliation cones of Cantwell-Conlon.

Abstract:Recent literature on Weil-Petersson random hyperbolic surfaces has met a consistent obstacle: the necessity to condition the model, prohibiting certain rare geometric patterns (which we call tangles), such as short closed geodesics or embedded surfaces of short boundary length. The main result of this article is a Moebius inversion formula, allowing to integrate the indicator function of the set of tangle-free surfaces in a systematic, tractable way. It is inspired by a key step of Friedman's celebrated proof of Alon's conjecture. We further prove that our tangle-free hypothesis significantly reduces the number of local topological types of short geodesics, replacing the exponential proliferation observed on tangled surfaces by a polynomial growth.

Abstract:We present a way to build hyperbolic spheres with conical singularities by gluing together simple building blocks. Our construction provides good control over the holonomy of the resulting hyperbolic cone sphere. In particular, it can be used to realize any Deroin-Tholozan (DT) representation as the holonomy of a hyperbolic cone sphere. Our construction is inspired by the correspondence between DT representations and chains of triangles in the hyperbolic plane. It gives a geometric interpretation of certain action-angle coordinates on the space of DT representations, which come from this correspondence.

Abstract:Let T(?) be the universal Teichm?ller space. Three points [f], [g] and [h] in T(?) are called to form a completing triangle if each pair of them has a unique geodesic joining them. Recently, Z. Zhou and L. Liu constructed two Strebel points [f] and [g] such that [id], [f] and [g] form a non-completing triangle. The computation in their construction is lengthy and complicated. In this note, it is shown that their results can be obtained in much simpler a way. Indeed, the current theory of Teichm?ller spaces allows us to give more information on triangles in an infinite-dimensional Teichm?ller space. Our method is self-contained and applies for general Teichm?ller spaces.

Abstract:We prove the Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem using a simpler machinery by making the observation that we can compose the Lefschetz Pencil with a Real Morse function to get a map from the variety to $\mathbb{R}$ which is "close" to being a Real Morse function. The proof uses a new method unlike the conventional one which uses vanishing cycles, thimbles and monodromy. We prove the genus formula for plane curves using Morse theory, Lefschetz pencil and Bézout's theorem. And then we prove the Riemann Hurwitz formula for ramified maps between curves by employing techniques from deformation theory. Lastly, we prove the Lefschetz Hyperplane Section Theorem solely using Real Morse Theory and exact sequences.

Geodesic Envelopes in the Thurston Metric on Teichmuller space

Abstract:The Thurston metric on Teichmuller space, first introduced by W. P. Thurston is an asymmetric metric on Teichmuller space defined by $d_{Th}(X,Y) = \frac12 log\sup_{\alpha} \frac{l_{\alpha}(Y)}{l_{\alpha}(X)}$. This metric is geodesic, but geodesics are far from unique. In this thesis, we show that in the once-punctured torus, and in the four-times punctured sphere, geodesics stay a uniformly-bounded distance from each other. In other words, we show that the \textbf{width} of the geodesic envelope, E(X,Y) between any pair of points $X,Y \in T(S)$ (where $S = S_{1,1}$ or $S = S_{0,4}$) is bounded uniformly. To do this, we first identify extremal geodesics in Env(X,Y), and show that these correspond to stretch vectors, proving a conjecture of Huang, Ohshika and Papadopoulos. We then compute Fenchel-Nielsen twisting along these paths, and use these computations, along with estimates on earthquake path lengths, to prove the main theorem.

Abstract:In the present paper, we revisit a famous theorem by Candel that we generalize by proving that given a compact lamination by hyperbolic surfaces, every negative function smooth inside the leaves and transversally continuous is the curvature function of a unique laminated metric in the corresponding conformal class. We give an interpretation of this result as a continuity result about the solutions of some elliptic PDEs in the so called Cheeger-Gromov topology on the space of complete pointed riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:In this thesis, we study the Teichmüller geodesic flow on the space of translation surfaces by introducing two related discrete-time dynamical systems. First, we discuss the Rauzy-Veech induction, highlighting its connections to interval exchange transformations and continued fraction expansions. While effective for addressing ergodic properties, this method faces challenges in counting closed orbits. Second, we introduce diagonal changes, a discretization better suited for counting and enumeration problems, initially applied to hyperelliptic components - subsets of translation surfaces with additional symmetries. Understanding closed orbits is significant due to the one-to-one correspondence with pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. After detailing this connection, we demonstrate how diagonal changes can produce a complete list of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes ordered by dilatation, and explain how to extend the algorithm to general components of strata.
