Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface with finitely many punctures Sigma, let S(Sigma) be the set of isotopy classes of essential unoriented simple closed curves in Sigma. We determine a complete set of relations for a function from S(Sigma) to R to be the geodesic length function of a hyperbolic metric with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on Sigma. As a consequence, the Teichmuller space of hyperbolic metrics with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on Sigma is reconstructed explicitly from an intrinsic (QP(1), PSL(2, Z)) structure on S(Sigma).

Abstract:We characterize hyperbolic metrics on compact triangulated surfaces with boundary using a variational principle. As a consequence, a new parameterization of the Teichmüller space of a compact surface with boundary is produced. In the new parameterization, the Teichmüller space becomes an explicit open convex polytope. Our results can be considered as a generalization of the simplicial coordinate of Penner [P1], [P2] for hyperbolic metrics with cusp ends to the case of surfaces with geodesic boundary. It is conjectured that the Weil-Petersson symplectic form can be expressed explicitly in terms of the new coordinate.

Abstract:Let ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$ be the moduli space of oriented circles in the three dimensional unit sphere ${\mathbb{S}^3}$. Given a natural complex structure such space becomes a three dimensional complex manifold, with a Möbius invariant Hermitian metric h of type (2, 1). Up to Möbius transformations, all geodesics with respect to the Lorentz metric g = Re(h) on ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$ are determined to form a one-parameter family of circles on a helicoid in a space form ${\mathbb{R}^3, \mathbb{H}^3}$ or ${\mathbb{S}^{3}}$, resp. We show also that any two oriented circles in ${\mathbb{S}^3}$ are connected by countably infinitely many geodesics in ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$.

Abstract:Let S be a surface of genus g with p punctures with negative Euler characteristic. We study the diameter of the $\epsilon$-thick part of moduli space of S equipped with the Teichmüller or Thurston's Lipschitz metric. We show that the asymptotic behaviors in both metrics are of order $\log \frac{g+p}{\epsilon}$. The same result also holds for the $\epsilon$-thick part of the moduli space of metric graphs of rank n equipped with the Lipschitz metric. The proof involves a sorting algorithm that sorts an arbitrary labeled tree with n labels with simultaneous Whitehead moves, where the number of steps is of order log(n).

The boundary of a totally geodesic subvariety of moduli space

Abstract:We consider subvarieties $N$ of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, the moduli space of genus $g$ Riemann surfaces with $n$ marked points, that are totally geodesic with respect to the Teichmüller metric. The Deligne-Mumford boundary of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ decomposes into strata, each of which is essentially a product of lower complexity moduli spaces -- in such spaces there is a natural notion of totally geodesic. We show that the boundary locus of $N$ in any such stratum is itself totally geodesic. Furthermore, we prove that each such boundary locus decomposes into prime pieces, and for each such piece the projection to each factor is locally isometric in an appropriate sense.

Abstract:Any open Riemann surface $R_0$ of finite genus $g$ can be conformally embedded into a closed Riemann surface of the same genus, that is, $R_0$ is realized as a subdomain of a closed Riemann surface of genus $g$. We are concerned with the set $M(R_0)$ of such closed Riemann surfaces. We formulate the problem in the Teichmüller space setting to investigate geometric properties of $M(R_{0})$. We show, among other things, that $M(R_{0})$ is a closed Lipschitz domain homeomorphic to a closed ball provided that $R_0$ is nonanalytically finite.

A geometric boundary for the moduli space of grafted surfaces

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed orientable surface of genus at least two. We introduce a bordification of the moduli space $\mathcal{PT}(S)$ of complex projective structures, with a boundary consisting of projective classes of half-translation surfaces. Thurston established an equivalence between complex projective structures and hyperbolic surfaces grafted along a measured lamination, leading to a homeomorphism $\mathcal{PT}(S) \cong \mathcal{T}(S) \times \mathcal{ML}(S)$. Our bordification is geometric in the sense that convergence to points on the boundary corresponds to the geometric convergence of grafted surfaces to half-translation surfaces (up to rescaling). This result relies on recent work by Calderon and Farre on the orthogeodesic foliation construction. Finally, we introduce a change of perspective, viewing grafted surfaces as a deformation (which we term "inflation") of half-translation surfaces, consisting of inserting negatively curved regions.

Abstract:We prove that, if a closed geodesic $\Gamma$ on a complete finite type hyperbolic surface has at least 2 self-intersections, then the length of $\Gamma$ has an lower bound $2\log(5+2\sqrt6)$, and the lower bound is sharp, attained on a corkscrew geodesic on a thrice punctured sphere.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_g$ be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any $\epsilon>0$, as $g\to \infty$, for a generic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$, the error term in the Prime Geodesic Theorem is bounded from above by $g\cdot t^{\frac{3}{4}+\epsilon}$, up to a uniform constant multiplication. The expected value of the error term in the Prime Geodesic Theorem over $\mathcal{M}_g$ is also studied. As an application, we show that as $g\to \infty$, on a generic hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$ most closed geodesics of length significantly less than $\sqrt{g}$ are simple and non-separating, and most closed geodesics of length significantly greater than $\sqrt{g}$ are not simple, which confirms a conjecture of Lipnowski-Wright. A novel effective upper bound for intersection numbers on $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ is also established, when certain indices are large compared to $\sqrt{g+n}$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal T$ be the Teichmüller space of marked genus $g$, $n$ punctured Riemann surfaces with its bordification $\Tbar$ the {\em augmented Teichmüller space} of marked Riemann surfaces with nodes, \cite{Abdegn, Bersdeg}. Provided with the WP metric $\Tbar$ is a complete CAT(0) metric space, \cite{DW2, Wlcomp, Yam2}. An invariant of a marked hyperbolic structure is the length $\ell_{\alpha}$ of the geodesic $\alpha$ in a free homotopy class. A basic feature of Teichmüller theory is the interplay of two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry, Weil-Petersson (WP) geometry and the behavior of geodesic-length functions. Our goal is to develop the understanding of the intrinsic local WP geometry through a study of the gradient and Hessian of geodesic-length functions. Considerations include expansions for the WP pairing of gradients, expansions for the Hessian and covariant derivative, comparability models for the WP metric, as well as the behavior of WP geodesics including a description of the Alexandrov tangent cone at the augmentation. Approximations and applications for geodesics close to the augmentation are developed. An application for fixed points of group actions is described. Bounding configurations and functions on the hyperbolic plane is basic to our approach. Considerations include analyzing the orbit of a discrete group of isometries and bounding sums of the inverse square exponential-distance.

Abstract:We study the geometry of horospheres in Teichmuller space of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures, where 3g - 3 + n >= 2. We show that every C-1-diffeomorphism of Teichmuller space to itself that preserves horospheres is an element of the extended mapping class group. Using the relation between horospheres and metric balls, we obtain a new proof of Royden's Theorem that the isometry group of the Teichmuller metric is the extended mapping class group.

Abstract:Let ${\mathcal{M}_{g,\epsilon}}$ be the ${\epsilon}$ -thick part of the moduli space ${\mathcal{M}_g}$ of closed genus g surfaces. In this article, we show that the number of balls of radius r needed to cover ${\mathcal{M}_{g,\epsilon}}$ is bounded below by ${(c_1g)^{2g}}$ and bounded above by ${(c_2g)^{2g}}$, where the constants c 1, c 2depend only on ${\epsilon}$ and r, and in particular not on g. Using this counting result we prove that there are Riemann surfaces of arbitrarily large injectivity radius that are not close (in the Teichmüller metric) to a finite cover of a fixed closed Riemann surface. This result illustrates the sharpness of the Ehrenpreis conjecture.

On constant mean curvature 1-immersions of surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Motivated by the work of Bryant on constant mean curvature (CMC) $1$-immersions of surfaces into the hyperbolic space H^3 and after the results of Tarantello (2023), we pursue a possible parametrization for the moduli space of (CMC) 1-immersions of a surface S (closed, orientable and of genus >1) into hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Those immersions enter as "critical" object in our analysis. In fact, they can be attained only as limits of the (CMC) c-immersions (as c tends to 1), obtained in Huang-Lucia-Tarantello (2022), for |c|<1. However, such passage to the limit can be prevented by possible blow-up phenomena, so that the pullback metrics of the (CMC) c-immersions may yield (at the limit) to a singular metric with conical singularities at finitely many points (the blow-up points). In case of genus g=2, blow up can occur only at a single point, and in Tarantello (2023) it was shown how it could be prevented and the passage to the limit ensured in terms of the Kodaira map. In this note we sharpen this result and for genus g=2, we obtaina condition (we believe sharp) which involves only the Kodaira map on the six Weierstrass points. In addition we tackle the case of higher genus, where multiple blow-up points occur. In this case, we need to identify a suitable replacement of the Kodaira map, now defined on the space of non-zero effective divisors. More importantly, we need to improve in a substantial way the asymptotic analysis of Tarantello (2023) limited to the case of "blow-up" with minimal mass. In this direction we give a contribution which best applies to the case of genus g=3, but also provides a relevant step and a convincing indication on what should happen in the general case.

Abstract:Let M be a compact orientable 3-manifold which contains a non-separating closed incompressible surface F . Let M ′ = M −η(F ) where η(F ) is an open regular neighborhood of F in M . In the paper we show that if M ′ has a Heegaard splitting V ′ ∪S′ W ′ with d(S ′ ) > 2g(M ′ ), then g(M) ≥ g(M ′)−g(F ). Furthermore, if F is a torus, then g(M) ≥ g(M ′)+1.
