Abstract:This is a Research and Instructional Development Project from the U. S. Naval Academy. In this monograph, the basic methods of nonstandard analysis for n-dimensional Euclidean spaces are presented. Specific rules are deveoped and these methods and rules are applied to rigorous integral and differential modeling. The topics include Robinson infinitesimals, limited and infinite numbers; convergence theory, continuity, *-transfer, internal definition, hyprefinite summation, Riemann-Stieltjes integration over Jordan-measurable regions; modeling with integrals via Infinite Sum Theorems; the nonstandard integral modeling rules - the method of constants, the methods of max. and min., and the hyperfinite sum; pure infinitesimal integral modeling via geometric elements; microgeometry, line and surface integrals, gauge integrals, fluxions and their relations to dynamic geometry. These rigorous results are also applied to lengths of curves, areas and volumes for Jordan-measurable regions, incompressible fluids, moments of inertia, electric field vectors, force fields and very elementary physics. Also presented are rigorous differential derivations for the partial differential equations for internal heat transfer and the vibrating membrane. All results are rigorously established and, mostly, all proofs appear in the appendix.

Abstract:We present an extension of the methods of classical Lie group analysis of differential equations to equations involving generalized functions (in particular: distributions). A suitable framework for such a generalization is provided by Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions. We show that under some mild conditions on the differential equations, symmetries of classical solutions remain symmetries for generalized solutions. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of the infinitesimal methods of group analysis that allows to compute symmetries of linear and nonlinear differential equations containing generalized function terms. Thereby, the group generators and group actions may be given by generalized functions themselves.

Abstract:We introduce a nonstandard extension of the category of diffeological spaces, and demonstrate its application to the study of generalized functions. Just as diffeological spaces are defined as concrete sheaves on the site of Euclidean open sets, our nonstandard diffeological spaces are defined as concrete sheaves on the site of open subsets of nonstandard Euclidean spaces, i.e. finite dimensional vector spaces over (the quasi-asymptotic variant of) Robinson's hyperreal numbers. It is shown that nonstandard diffeological spaces form a category which is enriched over the category of diffeological spaces, is closed under small limits and colimits, and is cartesian closed. Furthermore, it can be shown that the space of nonstandard functions on the extension of a Euclidean open set is a smooth differential algebra that admits an embedding of the differential vector space of Schwartz distributions. Since our algebra of generalized functions comes as a hom-object in a category, it enables not only the multiplication of distributions but also the composition of them. To illustrate the usefulness of this property we show that the homotopy extension property can be established for smooth relative cell complexes by exploiting extended maps.

Abstract:We extend the theory of distributional kernel operators to a framework of generalized functions, in which they are replaced by integral kernel operators. Moreover, in contrast to the distributional case, we show that these generalized integral operators can be composed unrestrictedly. This leads to the definition of the exponential, and more generally entire functions, of a subclass of such operators.

Abstract:A sequence of n trials from a finite population with no replacement is described by the hypergeometric distribution as the number of successes. Calculating the likelihood that factory-produced items would be defective is one of the most popular uses of the hypergeometric distribution in industrial quality control. Very recently, several researchers have applied this distribution on certain families of analytic functions. In this study, we provide certain adequate criteria for the generalized hypergeometric distribution series to be in two families of analytic functions defined in the open unit disk. Furthermore, we consider an integral operator for the hypergeometric distribution. Some corollaries will be implied from our main results.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish some new central limit theorems for generalized U-statistics of dependent processes under some mild conditions. Such central limit theorems complement existing results available from both the econometrics literature and statistics literature. We then look at applications of the established results to a number of test problems in time series regression models.

Abstract:Over the decades, Functional Analysis has been enriched and inspired on account of demands from neighboring fields, within mathematics, harmonic analysis (wavelets and signal processing), numerical analysis (finite element methods, discretization), PDEs (diffusion equations, scattering theory), representation theory; iterated function systems (fractals, Julia sets, chaotic dynamical systems), ergodic theory, operator algebras, and many more. And neighboring areas, probability/statistics (for example stochastic processes, Ito and Malliavin calculus), physics (representation of Lie groups, quantum field theory), and spectral theory for Schr\"odinger operators. We have strived for a more accessible book, and yet aimed squarely at applications; -- we have been serious about motivation: Rather than beginning with the four big theorems in Functional Analysis, our point of departure is an initial choice of topics from applications. And we have aimed for flexibility of use; acknowledging that students and instructors will invariably have a host of diverse goals in teaching beginning analysis courses. And students come to the course with a varied background. Indeed, over the years we found that students have come to the Functional Analysis sequence from other and different areas of math, and even from other departments; and so we have presented the material in a way that minimizes the need for prerequisites. We also found that well motivated students are easily able to fill in what is needed from measure theory, or from a facility with the four big theorems of Functional Analysis. And we found that the approach "learn-by-using" has a comparative advantage.

Abstract:A differential algebra of nonlinear generalized functions is presented as a tool for a wide range of nonsmooth nonlinear problems. The power of the differential algebra is used to do mathematical calculations or proofs; then the final result is often a classical function or distribution which is not solution in the classical or distributional sense. The aim of this text is to invite the readers in applying this tool in their own research without significant prerequisites by presenting its use on a sample of elementary applications from mathematics and physics. This text is the written version of a talk at the 2007 annual meeting of the AMS, NewOrleans, january 2007.
Generalized Converses of Operator Jensens Inequalities with Applications to Hypercomplex Function Approximations and Bounds Algebra

Abstract:Mond and Pecaric proposed a powerful method, namd as MP method, to deal with operator inequalities. However, this method requires a real-valued function to be convex or concave, and the normalized positive linear map between Hilbert spaces. The objective of this study is to extend the MP method by allowing non-convex or non-concave real-valued functions and nonlinear mapping between Hilbert spaces. The Stone-Weierstrass theorem and Kantorovich function are fundamental components employed in generalizing the MP method inequality in this context. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the inequalities obtained from the conventional MP method by requiring convex function with a normalized positive linear map. Various new inequalities regarding hypercomplex functions, i.e., operator-valued functions with operators as arguments, are derived based on the proposed MP method. These inequalities are applied to approximate hypercomplex functions using ratio criteria and difference criteria. Another application of these new inequalities is to establish bounds for hypercomplex functions algebra, i.e., an abelian monoid for the addition or multiplication of hypercomplex functions, and to derive tail bounds for random tensors ensembles addition or multiplication systematically.

Abstract:Within the framework of Hilbert spaces, we solve nonlocal problems in bounded domains with prescribed conditions on the complement of the domain. Our main focus is on the inhomogeneous Neumann problem in a rather general setting. We also study the transition from complement value problems to local boundary value problems. Several results are new even for the fractional Laplace operator. The setting also covers relevant models in the framework of peridynamics.

Abstract:We present numerical techniques based on generalized functions adapted to nonlinear calculations. They concern main numerical engineering problems ruled by-or issued from-nonlinear equations of continuum mechanics. The aim of this text is to invite the readers in applying these techniques in their own work without significant prerequisites by presenting their use on a sample of elementary applications from engineering. Pure mathematicians can read it easily since the numerical techniques are fully recalled in a very simple way and these applied mathematics are indeed based on nonlinear pure mathematics, namely on the use of generalized functions adapted to nonlinear calculations. The "nonlinear generalized functions" permit to compute explicit solutions of simple problems, called Riemann problems, in cases in which this is not possible using classical generalized functions (such as the distributions). These explicit solutions are the elementary building blocks of efficient numerical schemes needed by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://engineers.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> text was prepared for an engineering meeting. For mathematicians it is an illustration of general introductions to these "nonlinear generalized functions". History and Overview

Abstract:This note tries to show that a re-examination of a first course in analysis, using the more sophisticated tools and approaches obtained in later stages, can be a real fun for experts, advanced students, etc. We start by going to the extreme, namely we present two proofs of the Extreme Value Theorem: "the programmer proof" that suggests a method (which is practical in down-to-earth settings) to approximate, to any required precision, the extreme values of the given function in a metric space setting, and an abstract space proof ("the level-set proof") for semicontinuous functions defined on compact topological spaces. Next, in the intermediate part, we consider the Intermediate Value Theorem, generalize it to a wide class of discontinuous functions, and re-examine the meaning of the intermediate value property. The trek reaches the final frontier when we discuss the Uniform Continuity Theorem, generalize it, re-examine the meaning of uniform continuity, and find the optimal delta of the given epsilon. Abstract:We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers who are interested in the non-linear theory of generalized functions, but who are not necessarily familiar with the original Colombeau theory. We assume, however, some basic familiarity with the Schwartz theory of distributions.

Abstract:Non-Archimedean mathematics (in particular, nonstandard analysis) allows to construct some useful models to study certain phenomena arising in PDE’s; for example, it allows to construct generalized solutions of differential equations and variational problems that have no classical solution. In this paper we introduce certain notions of Non-Archimedean mathematics (and of nonstandard analysis) by means of an elementary topological approach; in particular, we construct Non-Archimedean extensions of the reals as appropriate topological completions of $$\mathbb {R}$$. Our approach is based on the notion of $$\varLambda $$-limit for real functions, and it is called $$\varLambda $$-theory. It can be seen as a topological generalization of the $$\alpha $$-theory presented in [6], and as an alternative topological presentation of the ultrapower construction of nonstandard extensions (in the sense of [21]). To motivate the use of $$\varLambda $$-theory for applications we show how to use it to solve a minimization problem of calculus of variations (that does not have classical solutions) by means of a particular family of generalized functions, called ultrafunctions.
