Theoretical Chemistry Accounts

Abstract:The ESPA (Electronic Structure, Principles and Applications) conference is organized every two years in Spain. It brings together international specialists in theoretical and computational chemistry to present and discuss the latest advances in this field. The first edition was held in Madrid in 1998, and then, subsequently, in San Sebastián, Sevilla, Valladolid, Santiago de Compostela, Palma de Mallorca, Oviedo, Barcelona, Badajoz, Castellón, and Toledo. The 12th edition of the conference could not be held in 2020 due to the covid epidemic, and it was held in Vigo from June 21 to 24, 2022. This special issue assembles a collection of articles from presentations given at the conference.

Abstract:The study delves into the pertinent literature on English for Specific Purpose (ESP) in Hotel Services and the existing research and educational practices in this domain. Examining relevant literature, encompassing scientific articles and empirical studies yields insights into students’ language needs, teachers’ challenges, and teachers’ perceptions of ESP when teaching in Hotel Services. These results are significant for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers, as they can enhance ESP education and equip students for successful careers in the hotel industry. Moreover, the study could pave the way for further research on ESP education in other specialized fields, building on the findings of this study.

Abstract:Marginalized communities lack full participation in social, economic, and political life, and they disproportionately bear the burden of environmental and health risks. This special issue of <i>Environmental Engineering Science</i>, the official journal of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP), reports research on the unique environmental challenges faced by historically marginalized communities around the world. The results of community-based participatory research with an Afro-descendant community in Columbia, Native American communities in Alaska, United States, villagers in the Philippines, disadvantaged communities in California, United States, rural communities in Mexico and Costa Rica, homeless encampments in the San Diego River (United States) watershed entrepreneurs in Durban, South Africa, and remote communities in the island nation of Fiji are presented. The research reported in this special issue is transdisciplinary, bringing engineers together with anthropologists, sociologists, economists, and public health experts. In the 13 articles in this special issue, some of the topics covered include inexpensive technologies for water treatment, novel agricultural strategies for reversing biodiversity losses, and strategies for climate change adaptation. In addition, one article covered educational strategies for teaching ethics to prepare students for humanitarian engineering, including topics of poverty, sustainability, social justice, and engineering decisions under uncertainty. Finally, an article presented ways that environmental engineering professors can engage and promote the success of underrepresented minority students and enable faculty engaged in community-based participatory research.

Abstract:In complex Social-Ecological Systems (SES), the interplay between ecological and social components shapes trajectories that impact human well-being and ecosystem services. While SES dynamics have been studied in static conditions, there has been less attention to how said systems respond to shocks and stressors over time and space. This special issue presents a collection of articles that use diverse methodologies—ranging from system dynamics modeling to participatory approaches—to analyze past SES changes and discuss future scenarios. Case studies from regions including Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Honduras, Chile, Ethiopia and Mongolia illustrate key variables influencing social–ecological transitions and provide insights into potential policy strategies to support sustainable SES. The studies underscore the need for multi-scalar approaches to SES research that explicitly theorize and empirically assess trajectories across space and time.
