Abstract:Despite its disordered liquid-like structure, glass exhibits solid-like mechanical properties 1 . The formation of glassy material occurs by vitrification, preventing crystallization and promoting an amorphous structure 2 . Glass is fundamental in diverse fields of materials science, owing to its unique optical, chemical and mechanical properties as well as durability, versatility and environmental sustainability 3 . However, engineering a glassy material without compromising its properties is challenging 4,5,6 . Here we report the discovery of a supramolecular amorphous glass formed by the spontaneous self-organization of the short aromatic tripeptide YYY initiated by non-covalent cross-linking with structural water 7,8 . This system uniquely combines often contradictory sets of properties; it is highly rigid yet can undergo complete self-healing at room temperature. Moreover, the supramolecular glass is an extremely strong adhesive yet it is transparent in a wide spectral range from visible to mid-infrared. This exceptional set of characteristics is observed in a simple bioorganic peptide glass composed of natural amino acids, presenting a multi-functional material that could be highly advantageous for various applications in science and engineering.

Inducing mechanical self-healing in glassy polymer melts

Abstract:Glassy polymer melts such as the plastics used in pipes, structural materials, and medical devices are ubiquitous in daily life. They accumulate damage over time due to their use, which limits their functionalities and demands periodic replacement. The resulting economic and social burden could be mitigated by the design of self-healing mechanisms that expand the lifespan of materials. However, the characteristic low molecular mobility in glassy polymer melts intrinsically limits the design of self-healing behavior. We demonstrate through numerical simulations that controlled oscillatory deformations enhance the local molecular mobility of glassy polymers without compromising their structural or mechanical stability. We apply this principle to increase the molecular mobility around the surface of a crack, inducing fracture repair and recovering the mechanical properties of the pristine material. Our findings establish a general physical mechanism of self-healing in glasses that may inspire the design and processing of new glassy materials.

Abstract:Glass is in general brittle and therefore usually cannot sustain large deformation. Recent advances in glass material development as well as micro-mechanical designs, however, are set to defy the conventional wisdom through the demonstration of flexible integrated photonics that can be bent, twisted, and even stretched without compromising its structural integrity and optical performance. In this paper, we review the latest progress in this emerging field, and discuss the rational material and mechanical engineering principles underlying the extraordinary flexibility of these photonic structures. Leveraging these design strategies, we demonstrated bendable chalcogenide glass waveguide circuits, flexible glass waveguide-integrated nanomembrane photodetectors, and stretchable glass photonics.

Abstract:Owing to a lack of microstructure, glassy materials are inherently strong but brittle, and often demonstrate extreme sensitivity to flaws. Accordingly, their macroscopic failure is often not initiated by plastic yielding, and almost always terminated by brittle fracture. Unlike conventional brittle glasses, metallic glasses are generally capable of limited plastic yielding by shear-band sliding in the presence of a flaw, and thus exhibit toughness-strength relationships that lie between those of brittle ceramics and marginally tough metals. Here, a bulk glassy palladium alloy is introduced, demonstrating an unusual capacity for shielding an opening crack accommodated by an extensive shear-band sliding process, which promotes a fracture toughness comparable to those of the toughest materials known. This result demonstrates that the combination of toughness and strength (that is, damage tolerance) accessible to amorphous materials extends beyond the benchmark ranges established by the toughest and strongest materials known, thereby pushing the envelope of damage tolerance accessible to a structural metal.

Abstract:Self-healing glass materials can potentially overcome the inherent limitations of glass, such as brittleness and difficulties in repairing broken sections while maintaining its critical properties. This paper reports a structural design and synthetic strategy for preparing glassy self-healing hybrids with high silica contents. The developed hybrids exhibited excellent self-healing properties based on dynamic and reversible crosslinking owing to the high density of zinc/imidazole units on the silica surface. First, core–shell silica nanoparticles with small multifunctional imidazole/butyl units (diameter: approximately10 nm) and good processability (homogeneous colloidal dispersions in common organic solvents) were synthesized. Afterwards, imidazole-functionalized silica nanoparticles were fabricated using Zn species to obtain self-healing hybrids with high silica contents (>60 wt%). These nanoparticles served as multifunctional and reversible crosslinking sites that dissipated energy, resulting in excellent mechanical, thermal, and healing characteristics. The obtained zinc/imidazole-based silica hybrids remain solid with high storage elasticity in the temperature range of 25–160 °C and high thermal stability corresponding to a 5 wt% weight loss above 280 °C, which were critical for self-healing glass applications. They also exhibited a moderate Young's modulus of 330 MPa and a self-healing recovery efficiency of 87%. The findings of this study provide new insights into the roles of reversible interactions (metal/ligand exchange reactions) at particle–particle interfaces and high surface functionalities that serve as non-covalent crosslinking points. The prepared hybrids with high silica contents remain solid over a wide temperature range, which can open new avenues for self-healing glass materials.

Abstract:Glasses are optically transparent, hard materials that have been in sustained demand and usage in architectural windows, optical devices, electronics and solar panels. Despite their outstanding optical qualities and durability, their brittleness and low resistance to impact still limits wider applications. Here we present new laminated glass designs that contain toughening cross-ply architectures inspired from fish scales and arthropod cuticles. This seemingly minor enrichment completely transforms the way laminated glass deforms and fractures, and it turns a traditionally brittle material into a stretchy and tough material with little impact on surface hardness and optical quality. Large ply rotation propagates over large volumes, and localization is delayed in tension, even if a strain softening interlayer is used, in a remarkable mechanism which is generated by the kinematics of the plies and geometrical hardening. Compared to traditional laminated glass which degrades significantly in performance when damaged, our cross-ply architecture glass is damage-tolerant and 50 times tougher in energy terms. Statement of significance: Despite the outstanding optical qualities and durability of glass, its brittleness and low resistance to impact still limits its wider application. Enriching laminated designs with crossplies completely transforms the material deforms and fractures, and turns a traditionally brittle material into a stretchy and tough material - with little impact on surface hardness and optical quality. Compared to traditional laminated glass which degrades significantly in performance when damaged, our cross-ply architecture glass is damage-tolerant and it is 50 times tougher in energy terms. Our glass-based, transparent material is highly innovative and it is the first of its kind. We believe it will have impact in broad range of applications in construction, coatings, chemical engineering, electronics, photovoltaics.

Abstract:Glass is an attractive material with outstanding transparency, hardness, durability and chemical stability. However, the inherent brittleness and low toughness of glass limit its applications. Overcoming the brittleness of glass will help satisfy the rapidly increasing demands of glass in building materials, optical devices, electronics and photovoltaic systems, but it has been a challenge to create glass that is stiff, strong and tough while maintaining its transparency. In this study we explore how the basic design of laminated glass can be enriched with bio-inspired architectures generated with laser engraving. We assess the performance of designs based on continuous plies (90° cross plies, Bouligand), finite glass blocks (segmented Bouligand, nacre-like brick-and-mortar) and hybrid designs. It shows that simultaneous improvements of stiffness, strength and energy absorption upon continuous ply designs can be achieved by promoting delocalized shearing of the polymeric interlayer over brittle fracture of the glass building blocks, and by only placing enriched architectures under tensile deformation so that interlayer shearing can be realized. This principle can be realized simply by adjusting size and arrangement of the building blocks, and by combining continuous plain layers with architectured layers.

Abstract:Loose connective tissue that widely exists in the human body is very tough and healable, due to the unique network formed by hyperbranched and linear fibers. Inspired by such structure, we develop a class of tough and healable polymeric glasses (THGs) by tailoring amine-carboxylate salt bridges between a hyperbranched polymer and high-molecular-weight linear copolymers. The high density of salt bridges leads to high yield strength (up to 49.7 MPa) and Young’s modulus (1.1 GPa) of THGs. Meanwhile, the large free volume of the hyperbranched polymer and the molecular entanglements of the linear copolymers enable outstanding toughness (up to 91.9 MJ/m3), outperforming most commercial glassy polymers. More interestingly, THGs can be readily healed below and around the glass-transition temperature after mechanical damage. Therefore, this biomimetic approach enables the development of glassy polymers with combination of high strength, excellent toughness, and self-healing ability.

In frames of the model, glass transition represents the dimensionality transition: from the 3D bond wave in glass-forming liquid to the 2D bond wave in glass. The model displays non-crystalline long-range order, semi-deterministic behavior of viscosity, and information field as a necessary condition for glass formation.

Abstract:Significance Glassy polymers are widely used as structural materials in aerospace vehicles, airplanes, automobiles, biomedical devices, and so on. However, glassy polymers are difficult to self-heal at room temperature due to their frozen molecules. For example, the window glass of airplanes made of polycarbonate cannot repair mechanical damages autonomously, which could lead to a catastrophe. To impart glassy polymers with self-healing ability, we take advantage of the high mobility of hyperbranched polymers, and introduce hydrogen complementary moieties onto the hyperbranched structure, enabling the construction of a series of autonomous room-temperature self-healing glassy polymers.

Abstract:Fused silica glass is the preferred material in all applications which require long-term chemical and mechanical stability as well as excellent optical properties. The manufacturing of complex hollow microstructures within transparent fused silica glass is of high interest for, among others, the miniaturization of chemical synthesis towards more versatile, configurable and environmentally friendly flow-through chemistry as well as high-quality optical waveguides or capillaries. However, microstructuring of such complex three-dimensional structures has proven evasive due to the high thermal and chemical stability as well as mechanical hardness of glass. Here we present an approach for the generation of hollow microstructures in fused silica glass with unseen precision and freedom of three-dimensional designs. The process combines the concept of sacrificial template replication with a room-temperature molding process for fused silica glass. The fabricated glass chips are versatile tools for, among other, the advance of miniaturization in chemical synthesis on chip.
A bioinspired optically transparent tough glass composite

Abstract:Glasses have numerous applications due to their exceptional transparency, however, poor fracture and impact resistance limit their applications as an engineering material. One relatively recent approach to improve the mechanical properties of materials is through bio-inspiration. Structural biological composites such as nacre, the protective inner layer of mollusk shells, offer far superior mechanical properties relative to their constituents. This has motivated researchers to mimic the design principles in natural composites to create tough transparent materials. However, current bio-inspired materials lack fabrication scalability or offer poor optical transmission. Here, an efficient, scalable bulk process is developed for creating optically transparent tough composites, resulting in a nacreous glass composite material with a four-fold increase in fracture toughness and a three-fold increase in flexural strength compared to conventional structural glasses, and with a 73% of average optical transmittance. The composite consists of glass flakes and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) assembled utilizing a centrifuge-based fabrication method that aligns and compacts the flakes into layers. To optimize the transparency of the structure, the refractive indices of the PMMA and glass are matched. Based on the results, this nacreous glass composite is proposed as a potential alternative in diverse architectural, vehicular, and electronics applications.

Abstract:Glass products have applications in design engineering, and they can solve many special problems. These materials can work in situations in which plastics and metals would fail and need to be part of designer’s repertoire. In some situations, by using these materials, some difficult problems would be solved. This paper contains a number of chapters as follows: a brief about ceramics family, a short history of glass, a brief about physics and the technology of glass fabrication, recently developed glasses with special destinations, testing methods and news about glass parts processing (grinding, waterjet processing, laser cutting, nanoimprint lithography, etc.). The last chapter of this review paper contain some strategic lines of glass usage in industry and estimations about the future of glass development.

Abstract:Mobile screens and optical glass devices encounter formidable engineering and technological bottlenecks in achieving irreversible restoration from surface mechanical scratches. Conventional methodologies involving glass surface micromachining and coatings technology have proven inadequate in effectively addressing the multiple recovery of optical transparency. Here, the synergistic integration principle of inorganic rigid cage-like structures and organic flexible chain segments is employed. A bionic "octopus" textured surface pattern, featuring ordered arrays of nano nodes acting as "post stations" and micro-nano wrinkles serving as "channels", is one-step fabricated by a dipping-curing coating process. The polymer coating exhibits smooth, transparent, and multiple-self-healing function with patterned antifouling. Introducing and matching the coating onto mobile screens, transparency of wiped/scratched glass is significantly restored by the synergistic use of protonic/non-protonic solvent systems in a dipping-assisted healing process. Intriguingly, the coating achieves surface/internal pattern reconstruction along with excellent transparency, antifouling, and interfacial adhesion mechanical properties, characterized by surface micro-nano textures and internal micro-nano spheres organization, after undergoing multiple treatments with the biocompatible disinfectant and cleaning agent ethanol. In the future, it is expected to develop highly versatile engineering materials for mobile screens, optical lenses and automotive glass, enabling multiple self-healing, self-cleaning, and antifouling properties with broad industrial applications.

Abstract:Engineering new glass compositions have experienced a sturdy tendency to move forward from (educated) trial-and-error to data- and simulation-driven strategies. In this work, we developed a computer program that combines data-driven predictive models (in this case, neural networks) with a genetic algorithm to design glass compositions with desired combinations of properties. First, we induced predictive models for the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) using a dataset of 45,302 compositions with 39 different chemical elements, and for the refractive index ($n_d$) using a dataset of 41,225 compositions with 38 different chemical elements. Then, we searched for relevant glass compositions using a genetic algorithm informed by a design trend of glasses having high $n_d$ (1.7 or more) and low $T_g$ (500 °C or less). Two candidate compositions suggested by the combined algorithms were selected and produced in the laboratory. These compositions are significantly different from those in the datasets used to induce the predictive models, showing that the used method is indeed capable of exploration. Both glasses met the constraints of the work, which supports the proposed framework. Therefore, this new tool can be immediately used for accelerating the design of new glasses. These results are a stepping stone in the pathway of machine learning-guided design of novel glasses.
