Abstract:In high-energy collisions of small systems, by high-enough final-state multiplicities, a collective behaviour is present that is similar to the flow patterns observed in heavy-ion collisions. Recent studies connect this collectivity to semi-soft vacuum-QCD processes. Here we explore QCD production mechanisms using angular correlations of heavy flavour using simulated proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$~TeV with the PYTHIA8 Monte Carlo event generator. We demonstrate that the event shape is strongly connected to the production mechanisms. Flattenicity, a novel event descriptor, can be used to separate events containing the final-state radiation from the rest of the events.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Examples and comparisons with experimental data from LEP, HERA, and Tevatron are also covered.

Abstract:The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Monte Carlo model calculations and analytic calculations based on Soft Collinear Effective Theory are compared to the measurements.

Abstract:Predictions for multi-jet rates in deep inelastic scattering (DIS), in the current fragmentation region, and in e+e− annihilation are derived using the so-called «k1-clustering» algorithm. The dependence of these ratesvs. Q2 andycut (the jet resolution parameter) is studied in detail and presented as an interesting test of perturbative QCD approaches for HERA and LEP (I and II) experiments.

Abstract:We review the current status of analyses of multijet final states in e+e- annihilation. Results for jet observables from LEP 1, LEP 2 and from the reanalysis of the PETRA experiment JADE will be presented. A determination of the b-quark mass using jet observables will be discussed and tests of power correction models will be shown. Finally determinations of the QCD colour factors from an analysis of event shape distributions at several energy points using power corrections will be discussed.

Abstract:The search for the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy-ion collisions has been impeded by the significant background arising from the anisotropic particle emission pattern, particularly elliptic flow. To alleviate this background, the event shape selection (ESS) technique categorizes collision events according to their shapes and projects the CME observables to a class of events with minimal flow. In this study, we explore two event shape variables to classify events and two elliptic flow variables to regulate the background. Each type of variable can be calculated from either single particles or particle pairs, resulting in four combinations of event shape and elliptic flow variables. By employing a toy model and the realistic event generator, event-by-event anomalous-viscous fluid dynamics (EBE-AVFD), we discover that the elliptic flow of resonances exhibits correlations with both the background and the potential CME signal, making the resonance flow unsuitable for background control. Through the EBE-AVFD simulations of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV with various input scenarios, we ascertain that the optimal ESS strategy for background control entails utilizing the single-particle elliptic flow in conjunction with the event shape variable based on particle pairs.

Abstract:In this talk I first present a short review of fluctuations in $e^+e^-$-annihilations. I then describe some new results on FD correlations. Experimental analyses of $pp$ and $\Lambda\Lambda$ correlations indicate a very small production radius. This result relies very strongly on comparisons with MC simulations. A study of the approximations and uncertainties is these simulations imply that it is premature to draw such a conclusion from the data.

Abstract:We propose the use of 1-jettiness, a global event shape, for exclusive single jet production in lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We derive a factorization formula, using the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, differential in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the jet and the 1-jettiness event shape. It provides a quantitative measure of the shape of the final-state QCD radiation in the presence of the hard jet, providing a useful powerful probe of QCD and nuclear physics. For example, one expects differences in the observed pattern of QCD radiation between large and small nuclei and these can be quantified by the 1-jettiness event shape. Numerical results are given for this new DIS event shape at leading twist with resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) level of accuracy, for a variety of nuclear targets. Such studies would be ideal at a future EIC or LHeC electron-ion collider, where a range of nuclear targets are planned.

Abstract:Studies of the Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) have provided fundamental information of the nucleon structure for decades. The electron-ion collider (EIC) will be the first collider capable of DIS study with both polarized lepton and polarized hadron beams, providing the possibility of accessing new electroweak structure functions of the nucleon. In this work, we completed the DIS cross section derivations for both longitudinally and transversely polarized leptons and hadrons, with no approximations made, and with all three contributions $\gamma \gamma, \gamma Z, ZZ$ included. These results were derived using primarily tensor algebra and Feynman calculus, starting from previously established leptonic and hadronic tensors and carry out their contraction. Our results are presented in terms of both spin-averaged and spin-dependent cross sections, allowing direct comparison with experimentally measured cross sections and their asymmetries. We include also in our discussion comparisons of different conventions that exist in the literature.

Groomed Event Shapes at HERA and the sPHENIX TPC

Abstract:This thesis summarizes the work of the author in two directions, both aimed at the study of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The first topic presented is a measurement of groomed event shapes using archived data collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data analysis methods and physics implications of the results are discussed, with the goal of improving the theoretical description of the hadronic final state in electron-hadron collisions before the construction of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The second topic concerns the sPHENIX experiment, which is now installed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The sPHENIX physics program and apparatus will be discussed, along with a description of each of the subdetectors. Special attention will be dedicated to the operating principles, design, and construction of the time projection chamber (TPC).

Abstract:The current status of theoretical work and experimental analyses on power corrections in QCD for e+e- annihilation will be reviewed. Measurements of the number of active quark flavours n_f and the QCD colour factors C_A and C_F derived from QCD fits to event shape distributions at lower energies and LEP energies will be presented. The fits are based on O(alpha_s^2)+NLLA QCD predictions with power corrections to model hadronisation.

Abstract:The deeply inelastic scattering is one of the most important processes in studying the nucleon structure. Theoretical calculations for both the inclusive one and the semi-inclusive one are generally carried out in the virtual photon-nucleon collinear frame in which virtual photon does not have the transverse components. Expressions in this frame are written in relatively simple forms. Nevertheless, it is also meaningful to calculate the scattering process in the electron-nucleon collinear frame where new measurement schemes are obtained. In the present paper, we reconsider the semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering process in the electron-nucleon collinear frame and present the results of azimuthal asymmetries and quark intrinsic asymmetries. We find that the differential cross sections in these two frames are the same at leading twist level but different at higher twist level. Azimuthal asymmetries and intrinsic asymmetries in these two frames have the same forms but different kinematic factors. For the sake of completeness, both the electromagnetic and weak interactions are considered in our calculations. The neutral current measurements in the scattering process could be used as electroweak precision tests which can provide new accurate determinations of the electroweak couplings.

Abstract:Experimental tests of QCD predictions for event shape distributions combining contributions from hard and soft processes are discussed. The hard processes are predicted by perturbative QCD calculations. The soft processes cannot be calculated directly using perturbative QCD, they are treated by a power correction model based on the analysis of infrared renormalons. Furthermore, an analysis of the gauge structure of QCD is presented using fits of the colour factors within the same combined QCD predictions.

Abstract:We present the first fully analytic calculation of the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) event shape observable Energy-Energy Correlation in electron-positron annihilation at Next-To-Leading Order (NLO). This result sheds light on the analytic structure of the event shape observables beyond Leading Order (LO) and serves as a motivation to employ our methods in the investigation of other event shape observables that so far have not been calculated analytically.
