Abstract:This thesis develops the theory of bundle gerbes and examines a number of useful constructions in this theory. These allow us to gain a greater insight into the structure of bundle gerbes and related objects. Furthermore they naturally lead to some interesting applications in physics.

Abstract:Usually bundle gerbes are considered as objects of a 2-groupoid, whose 1-morphisms, called stable isomorphisms, are all invertible. I introduce new 1-morphisms which include stable isomorphisms, trivializations and bundle gerbe modules. They fit into the structure of a 2-category of bundle gerbes, and lead to natural definitions of surface holonomy for closed surfaces, surfaces with boundary, and unoriented closed surfaces.

Abstract:A bundle gerbe is constructed from an oriented smooth vector bundle of even rank with a fiberwise inner product, over a compact connected orientable smooth manifold with Riemannian metric. From a trivialization of the bundle gerbe is constructed an irreducible Clifford module bundle, a spinor bundle over the smooth free loop space of the manifold. First, a Clifford algebra bundle over the loop space is constructed from the vector bundle. A polarization class bundle is constructed, choosing continuously over each point of the loop space a polarization class of Lagrangian subspaces of the complexification of the real vector space from which the Clifford algebra is made. Being unable to choose a Lagrangian subspace continuously from the polarization class over each point, the thesis constructs a bundle gerbe over the loop space of the base manifold to encode over each loop all such subspaces, along with the isomorphisms between the Fock spaces made from them, resulting from their being in the same polarization class. The vanishing of the Dixmier-Douady class of the bundle gerbe implies that the latter has a trivialization, from which is constructed a spinor bundle.

Abstract:The notion of a gerbe with connection is conveniently reformulated in terms of the simplicial deRham complex. In particular the usual Chern-Weil and Chern-Simons theory is well adapted to this framework and rather easily gives rise to `characteristic gerbes' associated to families of bundles and connections. In turn this gives invariants for families of foliated bundles. A special case is the Quillen line bundle associated to families of flat SU(2)-bundles

Explicit Non-Abelian Gerbes with Connections

Abstract:We define the notion of adjustment for strict Lie 2-groups and provide the complete cocycle description for non-Abelian gerbes with connections whose structure 2-group is an adjusted 2-group. Most importantly, we depart from the common fake-flat connections and employ adjusted connections. This is an important generalisation that is needed for physical applications especially in the context of supergravity. We give a number of explicit examples; in particular, we lift the spin structure on $S^4$, corresponding to an instanton-anti-instanton pair, to a string structure, a 2-group bundle with connection. We also outline how categorified forms of Bogomolny monopoles known as self-dual strings can be obtained via a Penrose-Ward transform of string bundles over twistor space.

Abstract:We give a functorial definition of $G$-gerbes over a simplicial complex when the local symmetry group $G$ is non-Abelian. These combinatorial gerbes are naturally endowed with a connective structure and a curving. This allows us to define a fibered category equipped with a functorial connection over the space of edge-paths. By computing the curvature of the latter on the faces of an infinitesimal 4-simplex, we recover the cocycle identities satisfied by the curvature of this gerbe. The link with $BF$-theories suggests that gerbes provide a framework adapted to the geometric formulation of strongly coupled gauge theories.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a bundle gerbe with connection on a smooth manifold $M$, and let $\rho: G \rightarrow \operatorname{Diff}(M)$ be a smooth action of a Fréchet--Lie group $G$ on $M$ that preserves the isomorphism class of $\mathcal{G}$. In this setting, we obtain an abelian extension of $G$ that consists of pairs $(g,A)$, where $g \in G$, and $A$ is an isomorphism from $\rho_{g}^{*}\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{G}$. We equip this group with a natural structure of abelian Fréchet--Lie group extension of $G$, under the assumption that the first integral homology of $M$ is finitely generated. As an application, we construct the universal central extension (in the category of Fréchet--Lie groups) of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic surface. As an intermediate step, we obtain a central extension of the group of exact volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a 3-manifold whose corresponding Lie algebra extension is conjectured to be universal.

On Relative Tractor Bundles

Abstract:This article contributes to the relative BGG-machinery for parabolic geometries. Starting from a relative tractor bundle, this machinery constructs a sequence of differential operators that are naturally associated to the geometry in question. In many situations of interest, it is known that this sequence provides a resolution of a sheaf that can locally be realized as a pullback from a local leaf space of a foliation that is naturally available in this situation. An explicit description of the latter sheaf was only available under much more restrictive assumptions.

Abstract:In 2022 Baraglia and Konno showed the following: for a smooth family of a homotopy $K3$ surface $X \to \mathbb{X} \stackrel{\pi}{\to} B$, if the tangent bundle along the fibers $T_B \mathbb{X}$ admits a spin structure, then $\mathcal{H}^+(\mathbb{X})$ also admits a spin structure, where $\mathcal{H}^+(\mathbb{X})$ is the vector bundle consisting of self-dual harmonic 2-forms. In this paper, we show that $T_B \mathbb{X} \oplus \pi^\ast \mathcal{H}^+(\mathbb{X})$ admits a canonical spin structure. The proof is carried out by canonically constructing a lifting $O(1)$-gerbe for the spin structure on $\mathcal{H}^+(\mathbb{X})$ using the families Seiberg--Witten equations, starting from a lifting $O(1)$-gerbe for the spin structure on $T_B \mathbb{X}$.

Abstract:We study extension properties for morphisms of stacks of bundles for group algebraic spaces. Applications are a short proof of the classification of bundles on the projective line for smooth geometrically reductive groups and the existence of splittings of filtered fiber functors for gerbes bound by affine pro-smooth group schemes defined over rings.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of a graded bundle which is a natural generalization of the concept of a vector bundle and whose standard examples are higher tangent bundles TnQ playing a fundamental role in higher order Lagrangian formalisms. Graded bundles are graded manifolds in the sense that we can choose an atlas whose local coordinates are homogeneous functions of degrees 0,1,…,n. We prove that graded bundles have a convenient equivalent description as homogeneity structures, i.e. manifolds with a smooth action of the multiplicative monoid (R≥0,⋅) of non-negative reals. The main result states that each homogeneity structure admits an atlas whose local coordinates are homogeneous. Considering a natural compatibility condition of homogeneity structures we formulate, in turn, the concept of a double (r-tuple, in general) graded bundle–a broad generalization of the concept of a double (r-tuple) vector bundle. Double graded bundles are proven to be locally trivial in the sense that we can find local coordinates which are simultaneously homogeneous with respect to both homogeneity structures.

Abstract:A pedagogical but concise overview of fiber bundles and their connections is provided, in the context of gauge theories in physics. The emphasis is on defining and visualizing concepts and relationships between them, as well as listing common confusions, alternative notations and jargon, and relevant facts and theorems. Special attention is given to detailed figures and geometric viewpoints, some of which would seem to be novel to the literature. Topics are avoided which are well covered in textbooks, such as historical motivations, proofs and derivations, and tools for practical calculations. The present paper is best read in conjunction with the similar paper on Riemannian geometry cited herein.

Subtleties concerning conformal tractor bundles

Abstract:The realization of tractor bundles as associated bundles in conformal geometry is studied. It is shown that different natural choices of principal bundle with normal Cartan connection corresponding to a given conformal manifold can give rise to topologically distinct associated tractor bundles for the same inducing representation. Consequences for homogeneous models and conformal holonomy are described. A careful presentation is made of background material concerning standard tractor bundles and equivalence between parabolic geometries and underlying structures.

Abstract:We consider the question of how geometric structures of a Deligne-Mumford stack affect its Gromov-Witten invariants. The two geometric structures studied here are {\em gerbes} and {\em root constructions}. In both cases, we explain conjectures on Gromov-Witten theory for these stacks and survey some recent progress on these conjectures.

Abstract:We set up a framework of 2-Hilbert bundles, which allows to rigorously define the "stringor bundle", a higher differential geometric object anticipated by Stolz and Teichner in an unpublished preprint about 20 years ago. Our framework includes an associated bundle construction, allowing us to associate a 2-Hilbert bundle with a principal 2-bundle and a unitary representation of its structure 2-group. We prove that the Stolz-Teichner stringor bundle is canonically isomorphic to the 2-Hilbert bundle obtained from applying our associated bundle construction to a string structure on a manifold and the stringor representation of the string 2-group that we discovered in earlier work. This establishes a perfect analogy to spin manifolds, representations of the spin groups, and spinor bundles.

Abstract:In extension of our previous study of KNbO_3 by the semiempirical Hartree-Fock method we present parameterization and total-energy results for non-ferroelectric KTaO_3 as a pure crystal (concentrating on the frozen phonon calculations) and that with Li impurities. The magnitudes of off-center Li displacements and the relaxation energies related to re-orientation of Li are calculated and compared with experimental estimates and earlier calculation results. The spatial extent of lattice relaxation around Li impurities and contributions from different neighbors to the relaxation energy are discussed.
