Abstract:Giant pulses (GPs) are extremely bright individual pulses of radio pulsar. In microbursts of Crab pulsar, which is an active GP emitter, zebra-pattern-like spectral structures are observed, which are reminiscent of the `zebra bands' that are observed in type IV solar radio flares. However, band spacing linearly increases with the band center frequency of $\sim5-30$\,GHz. In this study, we propose that the Crab pulsar GP can originate from the coherent instability of plasma near a light cylinder. Further, the growth of coherent instability can be attributed to the resonance observed between the cyclotron-resonant-excited wave and the background plasma oscillation. The particles can be injected into the closed-field line regions owing to magnetic reconnection near a light cylinder. These particles introduce a large amount of free energy that further causes cyclotron-resonant instability, which grows and amplifies radiative waves at frequencies close to the electron cyclotron harmonics that exhibit zebra-pattern-like spectral band structures. Further, these structures can be modulated by the resonance between the cyclotron-resonant-excited wave and the background plasma oscillation. In this scenario, the band structures of the Crab pulsar can be well fitted by a coherent instability model, where the plasma density of a light cylinder should be $\sim10^{13-15}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$, with an estimated gradient of $>5.5\times10^5\,\rm{cm^{-4}}$. This process may be accompanied by high-energy emissions. Similar phenomena are expected to be detected in other types of GP sources that have magnetic fields of $\simeq10^6$\,G in a light cylinder.

Pulse Profiles, Spectra and Polarization Characteristics of Non-Thermal Emissions from the Crab-Like Pulsars

Abstract:We discuss non-thermal emission mechanism of the Crab-like pulsars with both a two-dimensional electrodynamical study and a three-dimensional model. We investigate the emission process in the outer gap accelerator. In the two-dimensional electrodynamical study, we solve the Poisson equation of the accelerating electric field in the outer gap and the equation of motion of the primary particles with the synchrotron and the curvature radiation process and the pair-creation process. We show a solved gap structure which produces a consistent gamma-ray spectrum with EGRET observation. Based on the two-dimensional model, we conduct a three-dimensional emission model to calculate the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton processes of the secondary pairs produced outside the outer gap. We calculate the pulse profiles, the phase-resolved spectra and the polarization characteristics in optical to $\gamma$-ray bands to compare the observation of the Crab pulsar and PSR B0540-69. For the Crab pulsar, we find that the outer gap geometry extending from near the stellar surface to near the light cylinder produces a complex morphology change of the pulse profiles as a function of the photon energy. This predicted morphology change is quite similar with that of the observations. The calculated phase-resolved spectra are consistent with the data through optical to the $\gamma$-ray bands. We demonstrate that the 10$\sim$20 % of the polarization degree in the optical emissions from the Crab pulsar and the Vela pulsar are explained by the synchrotron emissions with the particle gyration motion.

The Phase-resolved High Energy Spectrum of the Crab Pulsar

Abstract:We present a modified outer gap model to study the phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. A theoretical double peak profile of the light curve containing the whole phase is shown to be consistent with the observed light curve of the Crab pulsar by shifting the inner boundary of the outer gap inwardly to $\sim 10$ stellar radii above the neutron star surface. In this model, the radial distances of the photons corresponding to different phases can be determined in the numerical calculation. Also the local electrodynamics, such as the accelerating electric field, the curvature radius of the magnetic field line and the soft photon energy, are sensitive to the radial distances to the neutron star. Using a synchrotron self-Compton mechanism, the phase-resolved spectra with the energy range from 100 eV to 3 GeV of the Crab pulsar can also be explained.

Flares in the Crab Nebula Driven by Untwisting Magnetic Fields

Abstract:The recent discovery of PeV electrons from the Crab nebula, produced on rapid time scales of one day or less with a sharply peaked gamma-ray spectrum without hard X-rays, challenges traditional models of diffusive shock acceleration followed by synchrotron radiation. Here we outline an accleration model involving a DC electric field parallel to the magnetic field in a twisted toroidal field around the pulsar. Sudden developments of resistivity in localized regions of the twisted field are thought to drive the particle acceleration, up to PeV energies, resulting in flares. This model can reproduce the observed time scales of $T \approx 1$ day, the peak photon energies of $U_{\Phi,rr} \approx 1$ MeV, maximum electron energies of $U_{e,rr} \approx 1$ PeV, and luminosities of $L \approx 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$.

Radio-to-TeV phase-resolved emission from the Crab pulsar: The annular gap model

Abstract:The Crab pulsar is a quite young, famous pulsar that radiates multi-wavelength pulsed photons. The latest detection of GeV and TeV pulsed emission with an unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio, supplied by the powerful telescopes Fermi, MAGIC, and VERITAS, challenges the current popular pulsar models, and can be a valuable discriminator to justify the pulsar high-energy-emission models. Our work is divided into two steps. First, taking reasonable parameters (the magnetic inclination angle alpha = 45 degrees and the view angle zeta = 63 degrees), we use the latest high-energy data to calculate radio, X-ray, gamma-ray, and TeV light curves from a geometric view to obtain crucial information on emission locations. Second, we calculate the phase-averaged spectrum and phase-resolved spectra for the Crab pulsar and take a theoretical justification from a physical view for the emission properties as found in the first step. It is found that a Gaussian emissivity distribution with the peak emission near the null charge surface in the so-called annular gap (AG) region gives the best modeled light curves. The pulsed radio, X-ray, gamma-ray, and TeV emission are mainly generated from the emission of primary particles or secondary particles with different emission mechanisms in the nearly similar region of the AG located in the only magnetic pole, which leads to the nearly "phase-aligned" multi-wavelength light curves. The emission of peak 1 and peak 2 originates from the AG region near the null charge surface, while the emission of the bridge primarily originates from the core gap (CG) region. The charged particles cannot co-rotate with the pulsar and escape from the magnetosphere, which determines the original flowing primary particles. The acceleration electric field and potential in the AG and CG are huge enough and are in the several tens of neutron star radii. Thus, the primary particles are accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies and produce numerous secondary particles (pairs) in the inner regions of the AG and CG. We emphasize that there are mainly two types of pairs: one is curvature-radiation induced (CR-induced) and the other is inverse-Compton-scattering induced (ICS-induced). The phase-averaged spectrum and phase-resolved spectra from soft X-ray to TeV bands are produced by four components: synchrotron radiation from CR- and ICS-induced pairs dominates the X-ray band to soft gamma-ray band (100 eV to 10 MeV); curvature radiation and synchrotron radiation from the primary particles mainly contribute to the gamma-ray band (10 MeV to similar to 20 GeV); ICS from the pairs significantly contributes to the TeV gamma-ray band (similar to 20-400 GeV). The multi-wavelength pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar can be well modeled with the AG and CG model. To distinguish our single magnetic pole model from two-pole models, the convincing values of the magnetic inclination angle and the viewing angle will play a key role.

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the radio pulsar death line problem within the framework of curvature radiation and/or inverse compton scattering induced vacuum gap model above neutron star polar caps. Our special interest is in the recently detected pulsar PSR J2144-3933 with extremal period 8.5 seconds, which lies far beyond conventional death lines. We argue, that formation of vacuum gaps requires a complicated multipolar surface magnetic field, with a strenght $B_s$ much higher than the surface dipolar component $B_d$, and radii of curvature ${\cal R}$ much smaller than the neutron star radius $R=10^6$ cm. Such a multipolar surface field is also consistent with death lines including the extremal pulsar PSR J2144-3933. Since vacuum gap models produce sparks, our paper naturally supports the spark related models of subpulse drift phenomenon as well as to the spark associated models of coherent pulsar radio emission.

Giant Pulses with Nanosecond Time Resolution detected from the Crab Pulsar at 8.5 and 15.1 GHz

Abstract:We present a study of shape, spectra and polarization properties of giant pulses (GPs) from the Crab pulsar at the very high frequencies of 8.5 and 15.1 GHz. Studies at 15.1 GHz were performed for the first time. Observations were conducted with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg in Oct-Nov 2007 at the frequencies of 8.5 and 15.1 GHz as part of an extensive campaign of multi-station multi-frequency observations of the Crab pulsar. A selection of the strongest pulses was recorded with a new data acquisition system, based on a fast digital oscilloscope, providing nanosecond time resolution in two polarizations in a bandwidth of about 500 MHz. We analyzed the pulse shapes, polarisation and dynamic spectra of GPs as well as the cross-correlations between their LHC and RHC signals. No events were detected outside main pulse and interpulse windows. GP properties were found to be very different for GPs emitted at longitudes of the main pulse and the interpulse. Cross-correlations of the LHC and RHC signals show regular patterns in the frequency domain for the main pulse, but these are missing for the interpulse GPs. We consider consequences of application of the rotating vector model to explain the apparent smooth variation in the position angle of linear polarization for main pulse GPs. We also introduce a new scenario of GP generation as a direct consequence of the polar cap discharge. We find further evidence for strong nano-shot discharges in the magnetosphere of the Crab pulsar. The repetitive frequency spectrum seen in GPs at the main pulse phase is interpreted as a diffraction pattern of regular structures in the emission region. The interpulse GPs however have a spectrum that resembles that of amplitude modulated noise. Propagation effects may be the cause of the differences.

Abstract:The equations that govern the temporal evolution of two photons in the Schr{ö}dinger picture are derived, taking into account the effects of loss, group-velocity dispersion, temporal phase modulation, linear coupling among different optical modes, and four-wave mixing. Inspired by the formalism, we propose the concept of quantum temporal imaging, which uses dispersive elements and temporal phase modulators to manipulate the temporal correlation of two entangled photons. We also present the exact solution of a two-photon vector soliton, in order to demonstrate the ease of use and intuitiveness of the proposed formulation.

Highly magnetized region in pulsar wind nebulae and origin of the Crab gamma-ray flares

Abstract:The recently discovered gamma-ray flares from the Crab nebula are generally attributed to the magnetic energy release in a highly magnetized region within the nebula. I argue that such a region naturally arises in the polar region of the inner nebula. In pulsar winds, efficient dissipation of the Poynting flux into the plasma energy occur only in the equatorial belt where the energy is predominantly transferred by alternating fields. At high latitudes, the pulsar wind remains highly magnetized therefore the termination shock in the polar region is weak and the postshock flow remains relativistic. I study the structure of this flow and show that the flow at first expands and decelerates and then it converges and accelerates. In the converging part of the flow, the kink instability triggers the magnetic dissipation. The energy release zone occurs at the base of the observed jet. A specific turbulence of relativistically shrinking magnetic loops efficiently accelerates particles so that the synchrotron emission in the hundreds MeV band, both persistent and flaring, comes from this site.

Abstract:The Crab pulsar has striking radio emission properties, with the two dominant pulse components—the main pulse and the interpulse—consisting entirely of giant pulses. The emission is scattered in both the Crab Nebula and the interstellar medium, causing multipath propagation and thus scintillation. We study the scintillation of the Crab's giant pulses using phased Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data at 1668 MHz. We find that giant pulse spectra correlate at only ~2%, much lower than the one-third correlation expected from a randomized signal imparted with the same impulse response function. In addition, we find that the main pulse and the interpulse appear to scintillate differently; the 2D cross-correlation of scintillation between the interpulse and main pulse has a lower amplitude and is wider in time and frequency delay than the 2D autocorrelation of the main pulses. These lines of evidence suggest that the giant pulse emission regions are extended, and that the main pulse and interpulse arise in physically distinct regions that are resolved by the scattering screen. Assuming the scattering takes place in the nebular filaments, the emission regions are of order a light-cylinder radius, as projected on the sky. With further very long baseline interferometry and multifrequency data, it may be possible to measure the distance to the scattering screens, the size of giant pulse emission regions, and the physical separation between the pulse components.
High-energy emission from pulsars in polar-cap models with CR-induced cascades

Abstract:For a subclass of polar-cap models based on electromagnetic cascades induced by curvature radiation (CR) we calculate broad-band high-energy spectra of pulsed emission expected for classical and millisecond pulsars. The spectra are a combination of curvature and synchrotron components. The spectrum of curvature component breaks at 150MeV, and neither its slope nor level below this energy are compatible with phase-averaged spectra of pulsed X-ray emission inferred from observations. Spectral properties in the combined energy range of ROSAT and ASCA (0.1 - 10 keV) depend upon the location of cyclotron turnover energy epsilon_ct=\hbar{e B \over m_e c} /sin(psi) in the synchrotron component. Unlike in outer-gap models, the available range of pitch angles psi is rather narrow and confined to low values. For classical pulsars, a gradual turnover begins already at 1MeV, and the level of the synchrotron spectrum decreases. At 10keV the curvature component eventually takes over, but with photon index alpha = 2/3, in disagreement with observations. For millisecond pulsars, the X-ray spectra are dominated by synchrotron component with alpha \simeq 1.5, and a sharp turnover into alpha \simeq -1 at epsilon_ct \sim 100eV. Relations of pulsed luminosity L_X to spin-down luminosity \edot are presented for classical and millisecond pulsars. We conclude that spectral properties and fluxes of pulsed non-thermal X-ray emission of some objects, like the Crab or the millisecond pulsar B1821-24, pose a challenge to the subclass of polar-cap models based on curvature and synchrotron radiation alone.
Damage Spreading at the Corner Filling Transition in the two-dimensional Ising Model

Abstract:The propagation of damage on the square Ising lattice with a corner geometry is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that, just at $T=T_f (h)$ (critical temperature of the filling transition) the damage initially propagates along the interface of the competing domains, according to a power law given by $D(t) \propto t^{\eta}$. The value obtained for the dynamic exponent ($\eta^{*} = 0.89(1)$) is in agreement with that corresponding to the wetting transition in the slit geometry (Abraham Model) given by $\eta^{WT} = 0.91(1)$. However, for later times the propagation crosses to a new regime such as $\eta^{**} = 0.40 \pm 0.02$, which is due to the propagation of the damage into the bulk of the magnetic domains. This result can be understood due to the constraints imposed to the propagation of damage by the corner geometry of the system that cause healing at the corners where the interface is attached.

Abstract:The ~400 MeV flaring emission from the Crab Nebula is naturally explained as the result of an abrupt reduction in the mass-loading of the pulsar wind. Very few particles are then available to carry the current required to maintain wave activity, causing them to achieve high Lorentz factors. When they penetrate the Nebula, a tightly beamed, high luminosity burst of hard gamma-rays results, with characteristics similar to the observed flares. This mechanism may operate in other powerful pulsars, such as J0537-6910 (PWN N 157B), B0540-69, B1957+20 and J0205+6449 (3C 58).

Mechanism of circular polarization in giant pulses and fast radio bursts

Abstract:Some giant pulses and fast radio bursts exhibit notable circular polarization, which remains unexplained and carries significant implications for their emission mechanisms. In this study, we identify multiple nanoshot pairs uniformly spaced by approximately 21 $\mu$s within a giant pulse emitted by the Crab pulsar. Among these pairs, a subset displays left-hand and right-hand circular polarization in two distinct nanoshots. We propose that the occurrence of such nanoshot pairs with dual circular polarizations arises from the fragmentation of a linearly-polarized nanoshot along the magnetic field lines under the extreme Faraday effect, leveraging highly-asymmetrical pair plasma and the ultra-intense field of nanoshots. The asymmetry in pair plasmas is likely linked to discharge activities in pulsars. Moreover, the intense field of nanoshots induces cyclotron resonance within the magnetosphere, effectively slowing down the propagation velocity of the circularly polarized mode. Our findings suggest that Crab giant pulses composing nanoshots originate in its polar cap region and escape the magnetosphere along the polar magnetic field. This mechanism can also elucidate the origin of circular polarization in some fast radio bursts and thus lends support to their magnetospheric origin.

Abstract:The population of gamma-ray pulsars, including Crab observed in the TeV range, and Vela detected above 50 GeV, challenges existing models of pulsed high-energy emission. Such models should be universally applicable, yet they should account for spectral differences among the pulsars. We show that the gamma-ray emission of Crab and Vela can be explained by synchrotron radiation from the current sheet of a striped wind, expanding with a modest Lorentz factor $\Gamma\lesssim100$ in the Crab case, and $\Gamma\lesssim50$ in the Vela case. In the Crab spectrum a new synchrotron self-Compton component is expected to be detected by the upcoming experiment CTA. We suggest that the gamma-ray spectrum directly probes the physics of relativistic magnetic reconnection in the striped wind. In the most energetic pulsars, like Crab, with $\dot{E}_{38}^{3/2}/P_{-2}\gtrsim0.002$ (where $\dot{E}$ is the spin down power, $P$ is the pulsar period, and $X=X_i\times10^i$ in CGS units), reconnection proceeds in the radiative cooling regime and results in a soft power-law distribution of cooling particles; in less powerful pulsars, like Vela, particle energization is limited by the current sheet size, and a hard particle spectrum reflects the acceleration mechanism. A strict lower limit on the number density of radiating particles corresponds to emission close to the light cylinder, and, in units of the GJ density, it is $\gtrsim0.5$ in the Crab wind, and $\gtrsim0.05$ in the Vela wind.

1997 October Event(s) in the Crab Pulsar

Abstract:In October 1997 daily monitoring observations of the Crab pulsar at 327 MHz and 610 MHz with an 85ft telescope in Green Bank, WV showed a jump in the dispersion by 0.12 cm^{-3} pc. Pulses were seen simultaneously at both old and new dispersions for a period of days. In the months before this event faint ghost emission, a replica of the pulse, was detected with a nearly frequency independent delay that quadratically diminished to zero. There was also a curious shift in the phase, a slowdown, at all frequencies at the time of the dispersion jump. I attribute most of these phenomena to the perturbing optics of a plasma prism that is located in the filamentary interface between the synchrotron nebula and the supernova ejecta and which crosses the line of sight over a period of months. The required density, scale length and velocity are reasonable given detailed HST and previous observations of these filaments.

Are Crab Nanoshots Schwinger Sparks?

Abstract:The highest brightness temperature ever observed are from "nanoshots" from the Crab pulsar which we argue could be the signature of bursts of vacuum $e^{\pm}$ pair production. If so this would be the first time the astronomical Schwinger effect has been observed. These "Schwinger sparks" would be an intermittent but extremely powerful, $\sim 10^3 L_{\astrosun}$, 10 PeV $e^{\pm}$ accelerator in the heart of the Crab. These nanosecond duration sparks are generated in a volume less than $1 m^3$ and the existence of such sparks has implications for the small scale structure of the magnetic field of young pulsars such as the Crab. This mechanism may also play a role in producing other enigmatic bright short radio transients such as fast radio bursts.

A Study on Pulsar Inner-Gap Sparking Comparing Inverse Compton Scattering and Curvature Radiation Processes

Abstract:The inner gap model (RS model) is a relatively successful model to understand the radiation behavior of radio pulsars. In this paper, the inner gap theory is reinvestigated by taking into account the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) process of the outgoing high energy particles with the thermal photons in pulsar magnetosphere. The ICS process plays two roles in inner gap physics. Firstly, the energy loss of the outgoing particles due to the ICS process is an efficient mechanism to prevent the particles from attaining very large Lorentz factors. Secondly, the scattered photons in the ICS process may play an important role in inner gap sparking, so that the basic properties of the gap (such as the height and the potential drop across the gap) change greatly. In this paper, we compare the gap 'sparking' conditions due to the ICS process and the curvature radiation (CR) process. Our conclusion is that in most cases, the ICS process will form a pair cascade earlier than CR, which results in a new type of inner gap. We then study this new type of gap in detail under the assumption of the multipole magnetic fields near the neutron star surface, just as what is assumed in the RS model. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) The gap properties not only depend on the pulsar magnetic field B and the rotation period P, but may also depend on the star surface temperature T if the temperature is high enough. This may present an interpretation to the 'nulling' phenomenon. (2) The 'binding energy problem' in the RS model is greatly weakened, because the electric field in the gap is greatly lower than that in the RS model. (3) The Lorentz factors of the outgoing particles are decreased, which are in a wide range of 10(3)-10(6) for P = 1. Radio Emission Physics in the Crab Pulsar

Abstract:We review our high-time-resolution radio observations of the Crab pulsar and compare our data to a variety of models for the emission physics. The Main Pulse and the Low-Frequency Interpulse come from regions somewhere in the high-altitude emission zones (caustics) that also produce pulsed X-ray and gamma-ray emission. Although no emission model can fully explain these two components, the most likely models suggest they arise from a combination of beam-driven instabilities, coherent charge bunching and strong electromagnetic turbulence. Because the radio power fluctuates on a wide range of timescales, we know the emission zones are patchy and dynamic. It is tempting to invoke unsteady pair creation in high-altitude gaps as source of the variability, but current pair cascade models cannot explain the densities required by any of the likely models. It is harder to account for the mysterious High-Frequency Interpulse. We understand neither its origin within the magnetosphere nor the striking emission bands in its dynamic spectrum. The most promising models are based on analogies with solar zebra bands, but they require unusual plasma structures which are not part of our standard picture of the magnetosphere. We argue that radio observations can reveal much about the upper magnetosphere, but work is required before the models can address all of the data.
