Abstract:We prove that if the initial ideal of a prime ideal is Borel-fixed and the dimension of the quotient ring is less than or equal to two, then given any non-minimal associated prime ideal of the initial ideal it contains another associated prime ideal of dimension one larger.

Abstract:We prove that if $B\subseteq A$ is an extension of finite dimensional algebras such that the projective dimension of $A/B$ as a $B$-bimodule is finite, if $A$ has finite finitistic dimension, then so does $B$. We exhibit examples demonstrating that the algebra $B$ appearing in such an extension can be more complicated than $A$.

Abstract:Let $B$ be a local (Noetherian) ring and suppose that $B$ has $n$ associated prime ideals where $n \geq 2$. We identify sufficient conditions for there to exist a local (Noetherian) subring $S$ of $B$ such that $S$ and $B$ have the same completion and $S$ has exactly $n - 1$ associated prime ideals. We include applications and consequences of this result.

Abstract:We study a pair consisting of a smooth variety over a field of positive characteristic and a multi-ideal with a real exponent. We prove the finiteness of the set of minimal log discrepancies for a fixed exponent if the dimension is less than or equal to three. We also prove that the set of log canonical thresholds (lct for short) of ideals on a smooth variety in positive characteristic is contained in the set of lct's of ideals on a smooth variety over C, assuming the dimension is less than or equal to three. Under the same dimension assumption, it follows that the accumulation points of log canonical thresholds are rational. Our proofs also show the same statements for the higher dimensional case if all such pairs admit log resolutions by a composite of blow-ups by smooth centers.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a normal Noetherian local domain of Krull dimension two. We examine intersections of rank one discrete valuation rings that birationally dominate $R$. We restrict to the class of prime divisors that dominate $R$ and show that if a collection of such prime divisors is taken below a certain ``level,'' then the intersection is an almost Dedekind domain having the property that every nonzero ideal can be represented uniquely as an irredundant intersection of powers of maximal ideals.

Generalizations of Burch Ideals and Ideal-Periodicity

Abstract:Consider an infinite minimal free resolution of a module $M$ over a local Noetherian ring $R$. It was shown by Eisenbud that if $R$ is a complete intersection ring, then a minimal resolution is periodic iff it is bounded. Over more general rings, Peeva and Gasharov showed this periodicity does not always hold. However, in every computed example, the sum of $n$ consecutive ideals of minors of matrices in the resolution is fixed for some $n$, asymptotically. We prove this in general for certain Generalized Positive Burch Index Rings, in the sense of Dao, Kobayashi, and Takahashi. In doing so, we develop techniques that begin to explain this periodicity in more generality.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is the fine structure of the ideals in the title, with emphasis on the properties of the associated Rees algebra and the special fiber. The watershed between the present approach and some of the previous work in the literature is that here one does not assume that the ideals in question satisfy the common generic properties. One exception is a recent work of N. P. H. Lan which inspired the present work. Here we recover and extend his work. We strongly focus on the behavior of the ideals of minors of the corresponding so-called Hilbert--Burch matrix and on conjugation features of the latter. We apply the results to three important models: linearly presented ideals of plane fat points, reciprocal ideals of hyperplane arrangements and linearly presented monomial ideals.

Abstract:Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.

Building monomial ideals with fixed betti numbers

Abstract:Motivated by the fact that as the number of generators of an ideal grows so does the complexity of calculating relations among the generators, this paper identifies collections of monomial ideals with a growing number of generators which have predictable free resolutions. We use elementary collapses from discrete homotopy theory to construct infinitely many monomial ideals, with an arbitrary number of generators, which have similar or the same betti numbers. We show that the Cohen-Macaulay property in each unmixed (pure) component of the ideal is preserved as the ideal is expanded.

Semiprime ideals in C*-algebras

Abstract:We show that a not necessarily closed ideal in a C*-algebra is semiprime if and only if it is idempotent, if and only if it is closed under square roots of positive elements. Among other things, it follows that prime and semiprime ideals in C*-algebras are automatically self-adjoint. To prove the above, we isolate and study a particular class of ideals, which we call Dixmier ideals. As it turns out, there is a rich theory of powers and roots for Dixmier ideals. We show that every ideal in a C*-algebra is squeezed by Dixmier ideals from inside and outside tightly in a suitable sense, from which we are able to deduce information about the ideal in the middle.

Perfectoid pure singularities

Abstract:Fix a prime number $p$. Inspired by the notion of $F$-pure or $F$-split singularities, we study the condition that a Noetherian ring with $p$ in its Jacobson radical is pure inside some perfectoid (classical) ring, a condition we call \emph{perfectoid pure}. We also study a related a priori weaker condition which asks that $R$ is pure in its absolute perfectoidization, a condition we call \emph{lim-perfectoid pure}. We show that both these notions coincide when $R$ is LCI. Mixed characteristic analogs of $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities are also explored. We study these notions of singularity, proving that they are weakly normal and that they are Du Bois after inverting $p$. We also explore the behavior of perfectoid singularities under finite covers and their relation to log canonical singularities. Finally, we prove an inversion of adjunction result in the LCI setting, and use it to prove that many common examples are perfectoid pure.

Abstract:This paper investgates Stanley-Reisner ideals with pure resolutions. We first describe two infinite families of such ideals associated to highly symmetric complexes. We then prove a partial analogue to the first Boij-Söderberg Conjecture for Stanley-Reisner ideals, by detailing an algorithm for constructing Stanley-Reisner ideals with pure Betti diagrams of any given shape, save for an initial shift.

Abstract:We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

Abstract:In 2018 Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman exhibited an interesting family of perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two with trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. All previously known perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two had been found by Brown in 1987. Brown's ideals all have non-trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. We prove that all of the ideals of Brown are obtained from the ideals of Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman by (non-homogeneous) specialization. We also prove that both families of ideals, when built using power series variables over a field, define rigid algebras in the sense of Lichtenbaum and Schlessinger.

Combinatorics of Borel Ideals

Abstract:In this work, I investigate several combinatorial properties of Borel (or co-analytic) ideals on countable sets. I extend a theorem presented in M. Hrušák, D. Meza-Alcántara, E. Thümmel, and C. Uzcátegui, \emph{Ramsey Type Properties of Ideals}, and also find an $F_\sigma$ tall ideal in which player II has a winning strategy in the Cut and Choose Game, which was a question posed by J. Zapletal. In the second section, I present some Ramsey properties of ideals, such as the previously known fact that the random graph ideal is critical for the Ramsey property (for subsets of size two and colorings with two colors) and construct a critical ideal for every Ramsey property. The third section includes comments on the Solecki ideal, and in the fourth section, I discover an $F_\sigma$ tall $K$-uniform ideal that is not equivalent to $\mathcal{ ED }_{fin}$, which is a question from Michael Hrušák's.

Abstract:Since bipolar quantum linear algebra (BQLA), under two operations–-addition and multiplication—demonstrates the properties of semirings, and since ideals play an important role in abstract algebra, our results are compelling for the ideals of a semiring. In this article, we investigate the characteristics of ideals, principal ideals, prime ideals, maximal ideals, and the smallest ideal containing any nonempty subset. By applying elementary real analysis, particularly the infimum, our main result is stated as follows: for any closed set I in BQLA, I is a nontrivial proper ideal if and only if there exists c∈(0,1] such that I=(−x,y)∈R2|cx≤y≤xcandx,y≥0. This shows that its shape has to be symmetric with the graph y=−x.

Abstract:We compute the finite generation ideal for Daigle and Freudenburg's counterexample to Hilbert's fourteenth problem. This ideal helps to understand how far the ring of invariants is from being finitely generated. Our calculations show that the finite generation ideal is the radical of an ideal generated by three infinite families of invariants. We show that these three families together with an additional invariant form a SAGBI-basis of the ring of invariants. We use the properties of our SAGBI-basis in our computation of the finite generation ideal.

Both results are uniform in the data of the underlying structure. Our approach is based mainly on the inertia property of the counting functions of primes and prime ideals.

Abstract:We prove that the powers of an edge ideal with linear quotients must also have linear quotients by employing a novel, easily implementable ordering of the minimal generators. As a consequence, we give explicit formulas for the projective dimension and Betti numbers of the edge ideals of whisker graphs. We also prove that second and higher powers of the edge ideals of anticycles admit linear quotient orderings, thus resolving an open question of Hoefel and Whieldon in the affirmative.

Abstract:We study the structure of ideals generated by some classes of 2 \times 2 permanents of hypermatrices. This generalizes [9] on 2 x 2 permanental ideal of generic matrices. We compare the obtained structure to that of the corresponding determinantal ideals in [Swanson-Taylor 11]: while the notion of t-switchability introduced in [11] plays a role for both permanental and determinantal ideals, the permanents require further restrictions, which in general increases the number of minimal primes. In the last two section we examine a few related classes of permanental ideals. This is an extension of the first author's senior thesis at Reed College, 2011, under the second author's supervision.
