Abstract:We have performed large-scale dynamical simulations on the current-driven three-dimensional frustrated anisotropic XY model with sparse weak columnar defects. Below the matching field, a moving Bose glass phase with superconducting coherence but without spatial order is observed at low temperatures. For very small columnar defect concentrations, a moving Bragg glass phase with both superconducting coherence and hexagonal Bragg peaks can be formed. Both the moving Bose glass and Bragg glass phases dynamically melt into a moving smectic via a first-order phase transition. It is suggested that the proliferation of dislocations mediates the dynamical melting in both cases.

Abstract:Using a novel differential magneto-optical imaging technique we investigate the phenomenon of vortex lattice melting in crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO). The images of melting reveal complex patterns in the formation and evolution of the vortex solid-liquid interface with varying field (H)/temperature (T). We believe that the complex melting patterns are due to a random distribution of material disorder/inhomogeneities across the sample, which create fluctuations in the local melting temperature or field value. To study the fluctuations in the local melting temperature/field, we have constructed maps of the melting landscape Tm(H, r), viz., the melting temperature (Tm) at a given location (r) in the sample at a given field (H). A study of these melting landscapes reveals an unexpected feature: the melting landscape is not fixed, but changes rather dramatically with varying field and temperature along the melting line. It is concluded that the changes in both the scale and shape of the landscape result from the competing contributions of different types of quenched disorder which have opposite effects on the local melting transition.

Abstract:We report the critical current density Jc and the vortex dynamics in phase-separated Tl0.58Rb0.42Fe1.72Se2 crystals by performing magnetization measurements. Structural investigation reveals micro- and nanoscopic phase separation between 122 (superconducting) and 245 (not superconducting) phases. Micrometric phase separation refers to 245 islands with typical diameters of 2µm embedded in a multiply-connected 122 superconducting network. Nanoscopic phase separation refers to 245 nanoprecipitates embedded in the 122 superconducting paths. The 245 nanoprecipitates with size comparable to the coherence length produce strong vortex pinning. It was observed that the temperature dependence of the flux creep rate presents a peak at intermediate temperatures and magnetic fields lower than 0.5T. The peak is systematically suppressed as the magnetic field is increased, and it could be related with relaxation generated by double-kink excitations. Double-kinks are low-energy depinning excitations usually associated with strong pinning produced by correlated disorder.
Quantum Order by Disorder: A Key to Understanding the Magnetic Phases of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Abstract:BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), a honeycomb cobaltate, is considered a promising candidate for materials displaying the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. This assumption is based on the distinctive characteristics of Co$^{2+}$ ions (3$d^7$) within an octahedral crystal environment, resulting in spin-orbit-coupled $J_{\rm eff}$~=~1/2 doublet states. However, recent experimental observations and theoretical analyses have raised questions regarding this hypothesis. Despite these uncertainties, reports of continuum excitations reminiscent of spinon excitations have prompted further investigations. In this study, we explore the magnetic phases of BCAO under both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields, employing dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, capacitance, and torque magnetometry measurement. Our results affirm the existence of multiple field-induced magnetic phases, with strong anisotropy of the phase boundaries between in-plane and out-of-plane fields. To elucidate the nature of these phases, we develop a minimal anisotropic exchange model. This model, supported by combined first principles calculations and theoretical modeling, quantitatively reproduces our experimental data. In BCAO, the combination of strong bond-independent XXZ anisotropy and geometric frustration leads to significant quantum order by disorder effects that stabilize collinear phases under both zero and finite magnetic fields.

Abstract:Monte Carlo simulations of layered BSCCO samples are used to investigate the behavior of vortex matter at low fields, particularly in connection with the possible occurrence of a Bragg glass (BrG) phase at low density of columnar defects, a phenomenon characterized by the prevalence of short-range over long-range order. In this dislocation-free topological phase the translational order correlation function displays a power law decay. For magnetic induction B = 0.1 kG the analysis of the data for the first Bragg peak of the planar structure factor, the hexatic order parameter, and the Delaunay triangulation shows that, as the density of columnar defects is lowered, a crossover (or transition) from Bose glass to BrG phase takes place in this highly anisotropic high-Tc superconductor. Most importantly, an analysis of the low-temperature 3D vortex–vortex correlation function in terms of the structure factor, calculated via a saddle point approach and the use of the numerical data as input, provides clear-cut evidence of the power law decay of the divergent Bragg peaks in the BrG phase, a fundamental feature that was inequivocally verified only in isotropic compounds.
Quenched dynamics and pattern formation in clean and disordered Bogoliubov-de Gennes superconductors

Abstract:We study the quench dynamics of a two dimensional superconductor in a lattice of size up to $200\times 200$ employing the self-consistent time dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism. In the clean limit, the dynamics of the order parameter for short times, characterized by a fast exponential growth and an oscillatory pattern, agrees with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) prediction. However, unlike BCS, we observe for longer times an universal exponential decay of these time oscillations that we show explicitly to be induced by the full emergence of spatial inhomogeneities of the order parameter, even in the clean limit, characterized by the exponential growth of its variance. The addition of a weak disorder does not alter these results qualitatively. In this region, the spatial inhomogeneities rapidly develops into an intricate spatial structure consisting of ordered fragmented stripes in perpendicular directions where the order parameter is heavily suppressed especially in the central region. As the disorder strength increases, the fragmented stripes gradually turn into a square lattice of approximately circular spatial regions where the condensate is heavily suppressed. A further increase of disorder leads to the deformation and ultimate destruction of this lattice. We explore suitable settings for the experimental confirmation of these findings.

Abstract:Flux line lattice in type II superconductors undergoes a transition into a "disordered" phase such as vortex liquid or vortex glass, due to thermal fluctuations and random quenched disorder. We quantitatively describe the competition between the thermal fluctuations and the disorder using the Ginzburg-Landau approach. The following T-H phase diagram of YBCO emerges. There are just two distinct thermodynamical phases, the homogeneous and the crystalline one, separated by a single first order transition line. The line, however, makes a wiggle near the experimentally claimed critical point at 12 T. The "critical point" is reinterpreted as a (noncritical) Kauzmann point in which the latent heat vanishes and the line is parallel to the T axis. The magnetization, the entropy, and the specific heat discontinuities at melting compare well with experiments.
Dynamic relaxation of topological defect at Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition

Abstract:With Monte Carlo methods we study the dynamic relaxation of a vortex state at the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition of the two-dimensional XY model. A local pseudo-magnetization is introduced to characterize the symmetric structure of the dynamic systems. The dynamic scaling behavior of the pseudo-magnetization and Binder cumulant is carefully analyzed, and the critical exponents are determined. To illustrate the dynamic effect of the topological defect, similar analysis for the the dynamic relaxation with a spin-wave initial state is also performed for comparison. We demonstrate that a limited amount of quenched disorder in the core of the vortex state may alter the dynamic universality class. Further, theoretical calculations based on the long-wave approximation are presented.

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the vortex dynamics in superconducting hollow cylinders

Abstract:Using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we demonstrate that the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, resulting from a Berry phase shift of the (macroscopic) wavefunction, is revealed through the dynamics of topological phase defects present in that same wavefunction. We study vortices and antivortices on the surface of a hollow superconducting cylinder, moving on circular orbits as they are subjected to the force from the current flowing parallel to the cylinder axis. Due to the AB effect the orbit deflections, caused by a magnetic field component along the cylinder axis, become periodic as a function of field, leading to strong and robust resistance oscillations.

Abstract:The true character of physical phenomena is thought to be reinforced as the system becomes disorder-free. In contrast, the two-dimensional (2D) superconductor is predicted to turn fragile and resistive away from the limit I -> 0, B -> 0, in the pinning-free regime. It is intriguing to note that the very vortices responsible for achieving superconductivity by pairing, condensation, and, thereby reducing the classical dissipation, render the state resistive driven by quantum fluctuations in the T -> 0. While cleaner systems are being explored for technological improvements, the 2D superconductor turning resistive when influenced by weak electric and magnetic fields has profound consequences for quantum technologies. A metallic ground state in 2D is beyond the consensus of both Bosonic and Fermionic systems, and its origin and nature warrant a comprehensive theoretical understanding supplemented by in-depth experiments. A real-time observation of the influence of vortex dynamics on transport properties so far has been elusive. We explore the nature and fate of a low-viscous, clean, 2D superconducting state formed on an ionic-liquid gated few-layered MoS$_2$ sample. The vortex-core being dissipative, the elastic depinning, intervortex interaction, and the subsequent dynamics of the vortex-lattice cause the system to behave like an overdamped harmonic oscillator, leaving transient signatures in the transport characteristics. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the transient nature and the noise characteristics of the magnetoresistance confirm that quantum fluctuations are solely responsible for the Bose metal state and the fragility of the superconducting state.

Activated vortex lattice transition in a superconductor with combined sixfold and twelvefold anisotropic interactions

Abstract:Numerical simulations are used to examine the transition dynamics between metastable and ground state vortex lattice phases in a system with combined sixfold and twelvefold contributions to the vortex-vortex interactions. The system is initially annealed using a twelvefold anisotropy, yielding domains of two different orientations and separated by grain boundaries. The vortex-vortex interaction is then suddenly changed to a sixfold anisotropy, rendering the twelvefold state metastable. Applying a drive that mimics an oscillating magnetic field causes the metastable state to decay, indicated by the structure factor that evolves from twelve to six peaks. The results fit the behavior seen in recent small-angle neutron scattering studies of the vortex lattice in MgB2. At higher drive amplitudes, the decay exhibits a two step process in which the initial fast decrease is followed by a slower regime where avalanches or bursts are correlated with dislocation annihilation events. The results are compared to other types of metastable systems with quenched disorder that decay under a periodic external drive.

Abstract:Flux dynamics in a high Tc superconducting thin film is investigated in the ns time scale. The initial metastable state is determined by applying a pulsed magnetic field to a sample previous cooled below the irreversibility line. Selective local heating of the film with a pulsed laser spot lowers the vortex pinning force suddenly. The magnetic flux rearrangements that follow generate a voltage pulse between two contacts on the zero current biased sample. Detail simulations were performed in the framework of a phenomenological model based on Maxwell Equations with constitutive relations for creep and flux flow that fully describe the observed voltage signals.

Abstract:Beta-NMR has been used to study vortex lattice disorder near the surface of the high-Tc superconductor YBCO. The magnetic field distribution from the vortex lattice was detected by implanting a low energy beam of highly polarized 8Li into a thin overlayer of silver on optimally doped, twinned and detwinned YBCO samples. The resonance in Ag broadens significantly below the transition temperature Tc as expected from the emerging field lines of the vortex lattice in YBCO. However, the lineshape is more symmetric and the dependence on the applied magnetic field is much weaker than expected from an ideal vortex lattice, indicating that the vortex density varies across the face of the sample, likely due to pinning at twin boundaries. At low temperatures the broadening from such disorder does not scale with the superfluid density.

Non-equilibrium dynamics across the BEC-BCS crossover

Abstract:We investigate the quench dynamics of strongly coupled superconductors within the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation from the BCS to the BEC regime and evaluate the out-of-equilibrium transient spectral density and optical conductivity relevant for pump probe experiments. Fourier transformation of the order parameter dynamics reveals a frequency $\Omega_J$ which, as in the BCS case, is controlled by the spectral gap. However, we find a crossover from the BCS dynamics to a new strong coupling regime where a characteristic frequency $\Omega_U$, associated to double occupancy fluctuations controls the order parameter dynamics. The change of regime occurs close to a dynamical phase transition. Both, $\Omega_J$ and $\Omega_U$ give rise to a complex structure of self-driven slow Rabi oscillations which are visible in the non-equilibrium optical conductivity where also side bands appear due to the modulation of the double occupancy by superconducting amplitude oscillations. Analogous results apply to CDW and SDW systems.

Transient dynamical phase diagram of the spin-boson model

Abstract:We investigate the real-time dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model across a broad range of coupling strengths, using the numerically exact inchworm quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. From short- and intermediate-time dynamics starting from an initially decoupled state, we extract signatures of the zero-temperature quantum phase transition between localized and delocalized states. We show that the dynamical phase diagram thus obtained differs from the equilibrium phase diagram in both the values of critical couplings and the associated critical exponents. We also identify and quantitatively analyze two competing mechanisms for the crossover between coherent oscillations and incoherent decay. Deep in the sub-Ohmic regime, the crossover is driven by the damping of the oscillation amplitude, while closer to the Ohmic regime the oscillation frequency itself drops sharply to zero at large coupling.

Abstract:In order to investigate the vortex dynamics of a high-T-c superconductor at fields up to B-c2, single crystals of the electron doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4+delta are oxygen doped in such a way that 6 T < B-c2(T=0) < 10 T. We measure the relaxation rare on an optimally oxygen doped and an oxygen overdoped sample at temperatures between 0.1 K and T-c in magnetic fields up to 7 T using high sensitivity torque magnetometry. For T similar to 0.1 K the results are compared with a quantum creep theory for the dirty limit. In the thermal regime data are analysed in terms of an activation energy U(j(s)) = (U-c/mu)[(j(c)/j(s))(mu)-1].
Superconducting Phase Coherence in the Presence of a Pseudogap: Relation to Specific Heat, Tunneling, and Vortex Core Spectroscopies

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate how, using a natural generalization of,BCS theory, superconducting phase coherence manifests itself in phase-insensitive measurements-when there is a smooch evolution of the excitation gap Delta from above to below T-c. In this context, we address the underdoped cuprates, Our premise is that just as Fermi-liquid theory fails above T-c, BCS theory fails below. The order parameter Delta (sc) is different from the excitation gap Delta. Equivalently there is a (pseudo)gap in the excitation spectrum above T-c which is also present in the underlying normal state of the superconducting phase. A central emphasis of our paper is that the latter gap is most directly inferred from specific heal and vortex core experiments. At the same time there are indications that fermionic quasiparticles exist below T-c so that many features of BCS theory are clearly present. A natural reconciliation of these observations is to modify BCS theory slightly without abandoning it altogether. Here we review such a modification based on a BCS-like ground-state wave function. A central parameter of our extended BCS theory is Delta (2)-Delta (2)(sc) which is a measure of the number of bosonic pair excitations which have a nonzero net momentum. These bosons are present in addition to the usual fermionic quasiparticles. Applying this theory we find that the Bose condensation of Cooper pairs, which is reflected in Delta (sc), leads to sharp peaks in the spectral function once T less than or equal toT(c). These are manifested in angle-resolved photoemission spectra as well as in specific heat jumps, which become more like the behavior in a lambda transition as the pseudogap develops. We end with a discussion of tunneling experiments and condensation energy issues. The comparison between theoretical and experimental plots of C-v, tunneling, vortex core spectroscopy measurements is good.

Abstract:The dynamics of low-density trapped magnetic fluxes, including local fluxes, are investigated in single-crystal YBCO in the region of strong thermal fluctuations near the superconducting phase transition. A substantial difference of the isothermal magnetization-relaxation behavior from the quasi-logarithmic behavior observed earlier in strong magnetic fields is established for the first time. The effective pinning potential in the temperature interval close to the critical temperature is estimated in terms of the simplest model of thermally activated creep.

Abstract:An experimental study of low density captured magnetic flux dynamics in YBCO single crystal samples near the superconducting phase transition point has been performed. Vortex dynamics similar to thermally assisted flux flow regime (TAFF) has been observed for the first time in such weak fields. It will be shown that Zeldov's thermoactivated creep model successfully describes the behavior of the magnetization in the YBCO single crystals in our experiments. Within the framework of this model the estimation of normalized relaxation rate was made.
