Abstract:We investigate the real-time dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model across a broad range of coupling strengths, using the numerically exact inchworm quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. From short- and intermediate-time dynamics starting from an initially decoupled state, we extract signatures of the zero-temperature quantum phase transition between localized and delocalized states. We show that the dynamical phase diagram thus obtained differs from the equilibrium phase diagram in both the values of critical couplings and the associated critical exponents. We also identify and quantitatively analyze two competing mechanisms for the crossover between coherent oscillations and incoherent decay. Deep in the sub-Ohmic regime, the crossover is driven by the damping of the oscillation amplitude, while closer to the Ohmic regime the oscillation frequency itself drops sharply to zero at large coupling.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the real - time dynamical behavior of the sub - Ohmic spin - boson model under different coupling strengths, especially the dynamical characteristics from short - time to intermediate - time. Specifically, the research objectives include:
1. **Extract the characteristics of quantum phase transitions**: By analyzing the dynamical behavior of the system starting from the initial decoupled state, identify the characteristics between the localized and delocalized states in the zero - temperature quantum phase transition (QPT).
2. **Compare the dynamic and equilibrium phase diagrams**: Show the differences between the obtained dynamical phase diagram and the equilibrium phase diagram, especially the differences in the critical coupling values and the relevant critical exponents.
3. **Analyze the coherence transition mechanism**: Identify and quantify two competing mechanisms, namely amplitude overdamping and frequency decrease, and explain the transition process from coherent oscillations to incoherent decay.
### Research Background
The spin - boson model describes the situation where a two - level system (or spin) is coupled to continuous bosonic modes. This model is crucial for understanding quantum phase transitions and is widely used in fields such as chemical kinetics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. In particular, the sub - Ohmic spectral density \(J(\omega)\propto\omega^{s}\) (where \(0 < s < 1\)) has practical applications in various physical systems, such as superconducting circuits and ion - trap systems.
### Method
The researchers used the numerically exact inchworm quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to simulate the real - time dynamical behavior of the system. By fitting the dynamical data, they were able to extract key parameters, such as oscillation frequency, damping coefficient, and long - term behavior offset. These parameters are helpful for distinguishing between the localized and delocalized phases and the transitions between coherence and incoherence.
### Main Findings
- **Critical coupling differences**: For \(s\lesssim0.4\), the dynamical critical coupling value is consistent with the equilibrium - state results; but for larger \(s\), the two begin to deviate.
- **Critical exponent differences**: The critical exponents in the dynamical phase diagram are different from the known critical exponents of the equilibrium - state quantum phase transition, showing different scaling behaviors.
- **Two transition mechanisms**:
- For all values of \(s\), amplitude overdamping leads to a smooth transition from coherent oscillations to incoherent decay.
- For \(s\gtrsim0.5\), the oscillation frequency drops sharply, showing a more phase - transition - like abrupt change.
### Conclusion
Through numerically exact data, the researchers successfully plotted the transient dynamical phase diagram of the sub - Ohmic spin - boson model. The research reveals significant differences between the dynamical behavior and the equilibrium - state behavior and discovers two different coherence transition mechanisms. This work provides a new perspective for understanding and controlling the transient "phase diagram" and lays the foundation for further exploring new physical phenomena in complex quantum systems.
