Abstract:The Oklo data constrain the depth of the nuclear potential well to a small margin of error, determined by various unknowns, such as the reactor temperature. However, we show that even these small variations could allow the U-238 half-life to vary by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:It has been pointed out by Shlyakhter that data from the natural fission reactors which operated about two billion years ago at Oklo (Gabon) had the potential of providing an extremely tight bound on the variability of the fine-structure constant alpha. We revisit the derivation of such a bound by: (i) reanalyzing a large selection of published rare-earth data from Oklo, (ii) critically taking into account the very large uncertainty of the temperature at which the reactors operated, and (iii) connecting in a new way (using isotope shift measurements) the Oklo-derived constraint on a possible shift of thermal neutron-capture resonances with a bound on the time variation of alpha. Our final (95% C.L.) results are: -0.9 \times 10^{-7} <(alpha^{Oklo} - alpha^{now})/alpha <1.2\times 10^{-7} and -6.7 \times 10^{-17} {yr}^{-1} < {\dot alpha}^{averaged}/alpha <5.0\times10^{-17} {yr}^{-1}$.

Abstract:We reanalyze Oklo $^{149}$Sm data using realistic models of the natural nuclear reactors. Disagreements among recent Oklo determinations of the time evolution of $\alpha$, the electromagnetic fine structure constant, are shown to be due to different reactor models, which led to different neutron spectra used in the calculations. We use known Oklo reactor epithermal spectral indices as criteria for selecting realistic reactor models. Two Oklo reactors, RZ2 and RZ10, were modeled with MCNP. The resulting neutron spectra were used to calculate the change in the $^{149}$Sm effective neutron capture cross section as a function of a possible shift in the energy of the 97.3-meV resonance. We independently deduce ancient $^{149}$Sm effective cross sections, and use these values to set limits on the time-variation of $\alpha$. Our study resolves a contradictory situation with previous Oklo $\alpha$-results. Our suggested $2 \sigma$ bound on a possible time variation of $\alpha$ over two billion years is stringent: $ -0.24 \times 10^{-7} \le \frac{\Delta \alpha}{\alpha} \le 0.11 \times 10^{-7}$, but model dependent in that it assumes only $\alpha$ has varied over time.

Abstract:The Oklo phenomenon, natural fission reactors which had taken place in Gabon about 2 billion years ago, provides one of the most stringent constraints on the possible time-variability of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$. We first review briefly what it is and how reliable it is in constraining $\alpha$. We then compare the result with a more recent result on the nonzero change of $\alpha$ obtained from the observation of the QSO absorption lines. We suggest a possible way to make these results consistent with each other in terms of the behavior of a scalar field which is expected to be responsible for the acceleration of the universe.

Abstract:We re-examined Shlyakhter's analysis of the Sm data in Oklo. With a special care of minimizing contamination due to the inflow of the isotope after the end of the reactor activity, we confirmed that his result on the time-variability of the fine-structure constant, $|\dot{\alpha}/\alpha |\lsim 10^{-17}{\rm y}^{-1}$, was basically correct. In addition to this upper bound, however, we obtained another result that indicates a different value of $\alpha$ 2 billion years ago. We add comments on the recent result from QSO's.

Gamma-ray fluxes in Oklo natural reactors

Abstract:Uncertainty in the operating temperatures of Oklo reactor zones impacts the precision of bounds derived for time variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha$. Improved $^{176}$Lu/$^{175}$Lu thermometry has been discussed but its usefulness may be complicated by photo excitation of the isomeric state $^{176m}$Lu by $^{176}$Lu($\gamma,\gamma^\prime $) fluorescence. We calculate prompt, delayed and equilibrium $\gamma$-ray fluxes due to fission of $^{235}$U in pulsed mode operation of Oklo zone RZ10. We use Monte Carlo modeling to calculate the prompt flux. We use improved data libraries to estimate delayed and equilibrium spectra and fluxes. We find $\gamma$-ray fluxes as a function of energy and derive values for the coefficients $\lambda_{\gamma,\gamma^\prime}$ that describe burn-up of $^{176}$Lu through the isomeric $^{176m}$Lu state. The contribution of the ($\gamma,\gamma^\prime $) channel to the $^{176}$Lu/$^{175}$Lu isotopic ratio is negligible in comparison to the neutron burn-up channels. Lutetium thermometry is fully applicable to analyses of Oklo reactor data.

Abstract:Thermal neutron capture cross sections in fission fragments need to be known to great precision in the nuclear power industry. These cross sections are frequently dominated by extremely narrow neutron capture resonances. An analysis of isotopic abundances at the site of a prehistoric natural reactor at Oklo in West Africa suggests that such a resonance in samarium-149 has moved by less than 0.01 eV in the past 2 x 10 9 years and this is used to place limits on the variability of coupling constants over this period.

Abstract:We study the electromagnetic coupling of the array of Gaussian and multi-moded horn antennas to the dual-reflector submillimeter-wave telescope on the ESA PLANCK Surveyor designed for measuring the temperature anisotropies and polarization characteristics of the cosmic microwave background. In this paper, we present the results of our analysis concerning the measurement of polarization with tilted off-axis dual-reflector Gregorian telescope and the propagation of multi-moded beams through such a system.

Bound on the variation in the fine structure constant implied by Oklo data

Abstract:Dynamical models of dark energy can imply that the fine structure constant $\alpha$ varies over cosmological time scales. Data on shifts in resonance energies $E_r$ from the Oklo natural fission reactor have been used to place restrictive bounds on the change in $\alpha$ over the last 1.8 billion years. We review the uncertainties in these analyses, focussing on corrections to the standard estimate of $k_\alpha\!=\!\alpha\,dE_r/d\alpha$ due to Damour and Dyson. Guided, in part, by the best practice for assessing systematic errors in theoretical estimates spelt out by Dobaczewski et al. [in J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 41, 074001 (2014)], we compute these corrections in a variety of models tuned to reproduce existing nuclear data. Although the net correction is uncertain to within a factor of 2 or 3, it constitutes at most no more than 25% of the Damour-Dyson estimate of $k_\alpha$. Making similar allowances for the uncertainties in the modeling of the operation of the Oklo reactors, we conclude that the relative change in $\alpha$ since the Oklo reactors were last active (redshift $z\simeq 0.14$) is less than $\sim 10$ parts per billion. To illustrate the utility of this bound at low-$z$, we consider its implications for the string theory-inspired runaway dilaton model of Damour, Piazza and Veneziano.

Abstract:We re-examine the effort to constrain the time-variability of the coupling constants of the fundamental interactions by studying the anomalous isotopic abundance of Sm observed at the remnants of the natural reactors which were in operation at Oklo about 2 billion years ago, in terms of a possible deviation of the resonance energy from the value observed today. We rely on new samples that were carefully collected to minimize natural contamination and also on a careful temperature estimate of the reactors. We obtain the upper bound $(-0.2\pm 0.8)\times 10^{-17}$ ${\rm y}^{-1}$ on the fractional rate of change of the electromagnetic as well as the strong interaction coupling constants. Our result basically agrees with and even suggests some improvement of the result due recently to Damour and Dyson. Strictly speaking, however, we find another range of the resonance energy shift indicating a nonzero time variation of the constants. We find a rather strong but still tentative indication that this range can be ruled out by including the Gd data, for which it is essential to take the effect of contamination into account.

Oklo reactors and implications for nuclear science

Abstract:We summarize the nuclear physics interests in the Oklo natural nuclear reactors, focusing particularly on developments over the past two decades. Modeling of the reactors has become increasingly sophisticated, employing Monte Carlo simulations with realistic geometries and materials that can generate both the thermal and epithermal fractions. The water content and the temperatures of the reactors have been uncertain parameters. We discuss recent work pointing to lower temperatures than earlier assumed. Nuclear cross sections are input to all Oklo modeling and we discuss a parameter, the $^{175}$Lu ground state cross section for thermal neutron capture leading to the isomer $^{176\mathrm{m}}$ Lu, that warrants further investigation. Studies of the time dependence of dimensionless fundamental constants have been a driver for much of the recent work on Oklo. We critically review neutron resonance energy shifts and their dependence on the fine structure constant $\alpha$ and the ratio $X_q=m_q/\Lambda$ (where $m_q$ is the average of the $u$ and $d$ current quark masses and $\Lambda$ is the mass scale of quantum chromodynamics). We suggest a formula for the combined sensitivity to $\alpha$ and $X_q$ that exhibits the dependence on proton number $Z$ and mass number $A$, potentially allowing quantum electrodynamic and quantum chromodynamic effects to be disentangled if a broader range of isotopic abundance data becomes available.

Exploring the Half-Lives of Extremely Long-Lived Α Emitters *

Abstract:Naturally occurring alpha emitters with extremely long half-lives are investigated using the latest experimental data. Within the time-dependent perturbation theory, alpha decay with a rather narrow width is treated as a quasi-stationary problem by dividing the potential between the alpha particle and daughter nucleus into a stationary part and a perturbation. The experimental alpha decay half-lives of seven available long-lived alpha emitters with T-1/2(total) > 10(14) y are reproduced with a good accuracy. It is also found that the deformation effect should be treated carefully for long-lived nuclei, especially with low Q(alpha), values. Predictions of the alpha decay half-lives of twenty naturally occurring nuclei are provided, namely, Ce-142, Nd-145,Nd-146, Sm-149, Dy-156, Er-162,Er-164, (168)yb, W-182,W-183,W-184,W-186 Os-187,Os-188,Os-189,Os-190, Pt-192,Pt-195, and Pb-204,Pb-206. These nuclei are energetically unstable to alpha decay with low decay energies and extremely long decay half-lives. In particular, the candidates Os-187 and Sm-149 are strongly recommended for future experiments.
Systematic Calculations Ofαdecay Properties Based on Results from Recent Experiments

Abstract:We have performed a systematical investigation on the new or improved data of a decay in recent experiments, including neutron-deficient nuclei around the proton drip line and superheavy nuclei. By using the double-folding integral of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction plus the density distributions of the alpha particle and the daughter nucleus, the deformed alpha-core potential is constructed. The alpha decay half-lives are then obtained within the modified two-potential approach. These obtained alpha decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. This shows that the present model and formulas of alpha decay are valid for some new mass ranges.

Abstract:In practically all known till now methods of nuclear chronometry there were usually taken into account the life-times of only fundamental states of $\alpha$-radioactive nuclei. But in the processes of nuclear synthesis in stars and under the influence of the constant cosmic radiation on surfaces of planets the excitations of the $\alpha$-radioactive nuclei are going on. Between them there are the states with the excited $\alpha$-particles inside the parent nuclei and so with much smaller life-times. And inside the large masses of stellar, terrestrial and meteoric substances the transitions between different internal conditions of radioactive nuclei are accompanied by infinite chains of the $\gamma$-radiations with the subsequent $\gamma$-absorptions, the further $\gamma$-radiations etc. For the description of the $\alpha$-decay evolution with considering of such excited states and multiple $\gamma$-radiations and $\gamma$-absorptions inside stars and under the influence of the cosmic radiation on the earth surface we present the quantum-mechanical approach, which is based on the generalized Krylov-Fock theorem. Some simple estimations are also presented. They bring to the conclusion that the usual (non-corrected) "nuclear clocks" do really indicate not to realistic values but to the \emph{upper limits} of the durations of the $\alpha$-decay stellar and planet processes.

Abstract:Using modern methods of reactor physics we have performed full-scale calculations of the natural reactor Oklo. For reliability we have used recent version of two Monte Carlo codes: Russian code MCU REA and world wide known code MCNP (USA). Both codes produce similar results. We have constructed a computer model of the reactor Oklo zone RZ2 which takes into account all details of design and composition. The calculations were performed for three fresh cores with different uranium contents. Multiplication factors, reactivities and neutron fluxes were calculated. We have estimated also the temperature and void effects for the fresh core. As would be expected, we have found for the fresh core a significant difference between reactor and Maxwell spectra, which was used before for averaging cross sections in the Oklo reactor. The averaged cross section of Sm-149 and its dependence on the shift of resonance position (due to variation of fundamental constants) are significantly different from previous results. Contrary to results of some previous papers we find no evidence for the change of the fine structure constant in the past and obtain new, most accurate limits on its variation with time: -4 10^{-17}year^{-1} < d alpha/dt/alpha < 3 10^{-17} year^{-1} A further improvement in the accuracy of the limits can be achieved by taking account of the core burnup. These calculations are in progress.

Abstract:We present a systematic analysis of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ transitions from the ground state of the parent nucleus to members of the favored band in the daughter nucleus. By using measured $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay energies and partial half-lives, the well-known Geiger-Nuttall law is examined for these transitions in both even-even and odd-$A$ nuclei. Accurate expressions are proposed for the evaluation of partial half-lives of these transitions based on microscopic quantum tunneling theory. The calculated partial $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay half-lives are in good agreement with the experimental data. The root-mean-square deviations of our expressions are $\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\equiv}{{{\ensuremath{\sum}}_{i=1}^{n}{[({\mathrm{log}}_{10}{T}_{\mathrm{cal}}^{i}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{log}}_{10}{T}_{\mathrm{exp}}^{i})]}^{2}/n}}^{1/2}=0.41$ for the even-even nuclei and $\ensuremath{\sigma}=0.35$ for the odd-$A$ nuclei. A set of parameters for the Viola-Seaborg (V-S) formula is also given by fitting the available experimental data. The proposed expressions and the V-S formula with our parameters will help experimentalists quickly evaluate the expected $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay half-lives during the design of experiments and check the measured decay energies and half-lives after experiments.
Half-lives of Α Decay from Natural Nuclides and from Superheavy Elements

Abstract:Recently, experimental researches on the α decay with long lifetime are one of hot topics in the contemporary nuclear physics [e.g. N. Kinoshita et al. (2012) [2] and J.W. Beeman et al. (2012) [4]]. In this study, we have systematically investigated the extremely long-lived α-decaying nuclei within a generalized density-dependent cluster model involving the experimental nuclear charge radii. In detail, the important density distribution of daughter nuclei is deduced from the corresponding experimental charge radii, leading to an improved α-core potential in the quantum tunneling calculation of α-decay width. Besides the excellent agreement between theory and experiment, predictions on half-lives of possible candidates for natural α emitters are made for future experimental detections. In addition, the recently confirmed α-decay chain from 294117 is well described, including the attractive long-lived α-decaying 270Db, i.e., a positive step towards the “island of stability” in the superheavy mass region.
Investigation of the fundamental constants stability based on the reactor Oklo burn-up analysis

Abstract:New severe constraints on the variation of the fine structure constant have been obtained from reactor Oklo analysis in our previous work. We investigate here how these constraints confine the parameter of BSBM model of varying $\alpha$. Integrating the coupled system of equations from the Big Bang up to the present time and taking into account the Oklo limits we have obtained the following margin on the combination of the parameters of BSBM model: $$ |\zeta_m (\frac{l}{l_{pl}})^2|<6\cdot 10^{-7}, $$ where $l_{pl}=(\frac{G\hbar}{c^3})^{\frac{1}{2}} \approx 1.6 \cdot 10^{-33}$ cm is a Plank length and $l$ is the characteristic length of the BSBM model. The natural value of the parameter $\zeta_m$ - the fraction of electromagnetic energy in matter - is about $10^{-4}$. As a result it is followed from our analysis that the characteristic length $l$ of BSBM theory should be considerably smaller than the Plank length to fulfill the Oklo constraints on $\alpha$ variation.

Abstract:The competition between $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays is investigated for neutron-deficient Pa, U, Np, and Pu isotopes. ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}$/electron-capture (EC) decay rates are calculated within the deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation with realistic nucleon-nucleon $(NN)$ interactions. Contributions from allowed Gamow-Teller and Fermi transitions as well as first-forbidden transitions are considered. $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay calculations are performed within the generalized density-dependent cluster model. Effects of differences between neutron and proton distributions and nuclear deformation are taken into account. In the calculations, Reid-93 $NN$ interactions are used for ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}/\mathrm{EC}$ decays, while Michigan three-range Yukawa effective interactions, based on the $G$-matrix elements of Reid $NN$ potentials, are used for $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay. The calculated $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay half-lives show good agreement with the experimental data over a range of magnitude from ${10}^{2}$ to ${10}^{5}$ s. The resulting total half-lives including $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ contributions are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, together with the $\ensuremath{\alpha}/\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay branching ratios.

Abstract:We investigate the recently discovered $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ decays of heavy and superheavy nuclei with $A=160--294$ by the cluster model of $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ decay. This covers the short-lifetime $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ decays of the nuclei near the proton-drip line, the decays of superheavy elements with $Z=106--118$, and the long-lifetime decay of the naturally occurring nuclide $^{180}\\mathrm{W}$ [Danevich et al., Phys. Rev. C 67, 014310 (2003)]. It is found that the cluster model can well reproduce the new data of half-lives of these nuclei. For superheavy nuclei the cluster model, without introducing any additional adjustments, can reasonably reproduce the half-lives of many nuclei although substantial deviations between experimental half-lives and theoretical ones exist in a few cases in which there may be large errors in the experimental data for a single event. Some new $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ emitters in naturally occurring nuclides are predicted. Experiments to search the $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ radioactivity of $^{176,178}\\mathrm{Hf}$ and of $^{149}\\mathrm{Sm}$ are strongly recommended.
