Abstract:A systematic method to account for electron correlation in periodic systems which can predict quantitatively correct band structures of non-conducting solids from first principles is presented. Using localized Hartree-Fock orbitals (both occupied and virtual ones), an effective Hamiltonian is built up whose matrix elements can easily be transferred from finite to infinite systems. To describe the correlation effects wave-function-based multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations with singly and doubly excited configurations are performed. This way it is possible to generate, both, valence and conduction bands with all correlation effects taken into account. Trans-polyacetylene is chosen as a test system.

Abstract:Kaon physics is at a turning point -- while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop.

Since there is not enough time even to summarize all that has been shown from experiments and to recognize all the memorable plots and results, this summary will give a few personal observations, an overview at a fairly high level of abstraction.

Quarkyonic matter with chiral symmetry restoration

Abstract:We present a novel unified approach to describe the dense symmetric nuclear matter by combining the quarkyonic matter framework with the parity doublet model. This integration allows for a consistent treatment of the transition from hadronic to quark degrees of freedom while incorporating chiral symmetry restoration effects. Our model introduces a chiral invariant mass for both baryons and constituent quarks, enabling a smooth crossover between hadronic and quark matter in symmetric nuclear matter. We derive the equation of state (EOS) for this hybrid system and investigate its thermodynamic properties. The model predicts a gradual onset of quark degrees of freedom at high densities while maintaining aspects of confinement.

Abstract:This invited summary gives some concluding remarks regarding theoretical aspects of the research presented at Charm2010. I will specialize to the role of theory and the relative reach of theory and experiment in three of the major areas of charm physics address at this conference, specifically 1) charm production, 2) charm weak decays, and 3) charm hadron spectroscopy. After a discussion of the status of progress on representative topics in each of these areas I will conclude with a previously unrelated Feynman story from a conference in the early days of charm.

Abstract:We report on the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) Theory Alliance topical program "Nuclear Isomers in the Era of FRIB". We outline the many ways isomers influence and contribute to nuclear science and technology, especially in the four FRIB pillars: properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries, and applications for the nation and society. We conclude with a resolution stating our recommendation that the nuclear physics community actively pursue isomer research. A white paper is forthcoming.

Chiral condensate at finite density using chiral Ward identity

Abstract:In order to study partial restoration of the chiral symmetry at finite density, we investigate the density corrections of the chiral condensate up to next-leading order of density expansion using the chiral Ward identity and an in-medium chiral perturbation theory. In our study, we assume that all the in-vacuum quantities for the pion, the nucleon and the pi N interaction are determined and focus on density expansion of the in-medium physical quantities. We perform diagrammatic analysis of the correlation functions which provide the in-medium chiral condensate. This density expansion scheme shows that medium effects to the chiral condensate beyond the linear density come from density corrections to the pi N sigma term as a result of the interactions between pion and nucleon in nuclear matter. We also discuss that higher density contributions beyond order of rho^2 cannot be fixed only by the in-vacuum pi N dynamics but we need NN two-body dynamics in vacuum to fix divergence appearing in the calculation of the rho^2 dependence of the chiral condensate with the pi N dynamics.

Abstract:We study Turing machines that are allowed absolutely no space overhead. The only work space the machines have, beyond the fixed amount of memory implicit in their finite-state control, is that which they can create by cannibalizing the input bits' own space. This model more closely reflects the fixed-sized memory of real computers than does the standard complexity-theoretic model of linear space. Though some context-sensitive languages cannot be accepted by such machines, we show that all context-free languages can be accepted nondeterministically in polynomial time with absolutely no space overhead, and that all deterministic context-free languages can be accepted deterministically in polynomial time with absolutely no space overhead.

Abstract:Over the last decade, nuclear theory has made dramatic progress in few-body and ab initio many-body calculations. These great advances stem from chiral effective field theory ( χ EFT), which provides an efficient expansion and consistent treatment of nuclear forces as inputs of modern many-body calculations, among which the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) and its variants play a vital role. On the other hand, significant efforts have been made to provide a unified description of the structure, decay, and reactions of the nuclei as open quantum systems. While a fully comprehensive and microscopic model has yet to be realized, substantial progress over recent decades has enhanced our understanding of open quantum systems around the dripline, which are often characterized by exotic structures and decay modes. To study these interesting phenomena, Gamow coupled-channel (GCC) method, in which the open quantum nature of few-body valence nucleons coupled to a deformed core, has been developed. This review focuses on the developments of the advanced IMSRG and GCC and their applications to nuclear structure and reactions.

Some recent topics on possible chiral restoration in hot and/or dense matter are picked up. We also discuss so called {\em effective} restoration of chiral anomaly hot and/or dense matter, as may be seen in a character change of $\eta '$ meson.

Abstract:The brief history for the prediction of the nuclear chirality is provided. The theoretical and experimental investigations of the nuclear chirality are reviewed, including the verification of chiral doublet bands, the chiral conundrum and its resolution, and the prediction and observation of the multiple chiral doublets (M$\chi$D). Some recent theoretical progresses are highlighted, including the chiral collective Hamiltonian, the A-plot and the K-plot, the nuclear chirality-parity (ChP) violation, the chiral rotation induced by the pairing correlations, as well as the chiral dynamics. The possibly emerging area, challenges that lie ahead, and opportunities for progress in the context of the nuclear chirality are discussed.

Abstract:This whitepaper is an outcome of the workshop Intersections between Nuclear Physics and Quantum Information held at Argonne National Laboratory on 28-30 March 2018 [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.phy.anl.gov/npqi2018/" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>]. The workshop brought together 116 national and international experts in nuclear physics and quantum information science to explore opportunities for the two fields to collaborate on topics of interest to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics, and more broadly to U.S. society and industry. The workshop consisted of 22 invited and 10 contributed talks, as well as three panel discussion sessions. Topics discussed included quantum computation, quantum simulation, quantum sensing, nuclear physics detectors, nuclear many-body problem, entanglement at collider energies, and lattice gauge theories.
