Abstract:A number of recent progresses in the study of strong field effects in heavy ion collisions are discussed here: 1) the Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) and its experimental manifestation via splitting of positive/negative pions' elliptic flow; 2) the event-by-event azimuthal fluctuations of strong EM fields and its correlations with matter geometry; 3) a new mechanism for generating axial current in external electric field, the Chiral Electric Separation Effect (CESE).

Abstract:We give a brief overview of recent theoretical and experimental results on the chiral magnetic effect and spin polarization effect in heavy-ion collisions. We present updated experimental results for the chiral magnetic effect and related phenomena. The time evolution of the magnetic fields in different models is discussed. The newly developed quantum kinetic theory for massive fermions is reviewed. We present theoretical and experimental results for the polarization of Λ hyperons and the ρ _00 value of vector mesons.

Abstract:Relativistic heavy-ion collisions create hot quark-gluon plasma as well as very strong electromagnetic (EM) and fluid vortical fields. The strong EM field and vorticity can induce intriguing macroscopic quantum phenomena such as chiral magnetic, chiral separation, chiral electric separation, and chiral vortical effects as well as the spin polarization of hadrons. These phenomena provide us with experimentally feasible means to study the nontrivial topological sector of quantum chromodynamics, the possible parity violation of strong interaction at high temperature, and the subatomic spintronics of quark-gluon plasma. These studies, both in theory and in experiments, are strongly connected with other subfields of physics such as condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and cold atomic physics, and thus form an emerging interdisciplinary research area. We give an introduction to the aforementioned phenomena induced by the EM field and vorticity and an overview of the current status of their experimental research in heavy-ion collisions. We also briefly discuss spin hydrodynamics as well as chiral and spin kinetic theories.

Abstract:We employ a 3+1D anomalous hydrodynamics with initial condition generated by HIJING to simulate the chiral vortical effect and the chiral magnetic effect in heavy-ion collisions. This allows us to calculate the charge-dependent two-particle correlations with respect to the reaction plane at different collision energies and centralities. We then compare the computed results with the experimental data and give discussions on the possible background effects.

Abstract:The isobaric collision experiment at RHIC provides the unique opportunity to detect the possible signal of Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions. The idea is to contrast the correlation observables of the two colliding systems that supposedly have identical flow-driven background contributions while quite different CME signal contributions due to the 10% variation in their nuclear charge and thus magnetic field strength. With the recently developed quantitative simulation tool for computing CME signal, the Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD), we demonstrate that a joint (multiplicity + elliptic-flow) event selection is crucial for this purpose. We further propose to use the absolute difference between RuRu and ZrZr events (after using identical event selection) for detecting CME signal and make predictions for the correlation observables.
Chiral Magnetic Effects in Nuclear Collisions

Abstract:The interplay of quantum anomalies with strong magnetic field and vorticity in chiral systems could lead to novel transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME), the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) and the chiral vortical effect (CVE). In high-energy nuclear collisions, these chiral effects may survive the expansion of a quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. The experimental searches for the CME, the CMW and the CVE, have aroused extensive interest over the past couple of decades. The main goal of this article is to review latest experimental progress in search for these novel chiral transport phenomena at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at BNL and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Future programs to help reduce uncertainties and facilitate the interpretation of the data are also discussed.

Vorticity and Spin Polarization in Heavy Ion Collisions: Transport Models

Abstract:Heavy ion collisions generate strong fluid vorticity in the produced hot quark-gluon matter which could in turn induce measurable spin polarization of hadrons. We review recent progress on the vorticity formation and spin polarization in heavy ion collisions with transport models. We present an introduction to the fluid vorticity in non-relativistic and relativistic hydrodynamics and address various properties of the vorticity formed in heavy ion collisions. We discuss the spin polarization in a vortical fluid using the Wigner function formalism in which we derive the freeze-out formula for the spin polarization. Finally, we give a brief overview of recent theoretical results for both the global and local spin polarization of Lambda and (Lambda) over bar hyperons.
Azimuthally Fluctuating Magnetic Field and Its Impacts on Observables in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:The heavy-ion collisions can produce extremely strong transient magnetic and electric fields. We study the azimuthal fluctuation of these fields and their correlations with the also fluctuating matter geometry (characterized by the participant plane harmonics) using event-by-event simulations. A sizable suppression of the angular correlations between the magnetic field and the 2nd and 4th harmonic participant planes is found in very central and very peripheral collisions, while the magnitudes of these correlations peak around impact parameter b~8-10 fm for RHIC collisions. This can lead to notable impacts on a number of observables related to various magnetic field induced effects, and our finding suggests that the optimal event class for measuring them should be that corresponding to b~8-10 fm.

Abstract:High-energy Heavy-ion collisions can generate extremely hot quark-gluon matter and also extremely strong magnetic fields and fluid vorticity. Once coupled to chiral anomaly, the magnetic fields and fluid vorticity can induce a variety of novel transport phenomena, including the chiral magnetic effect, chiral vortical effect, etc. Some of them require the environmental violation of parity and thus provide a means to test the possible parity violation in hot strongly interacting matter. We will discuss the underlying mechanism and implications of these anomalous chiral transports in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:The magnetic field plays a crucial role in various novel phenomena in heavy-ion collisions. We solve the Maxwell equations numerically in a medium with time-dependent electric conductivity by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm. We investigate the time evolution of magnetic fields in two scenarios with different electric conductivities at collision energies ranging from sNN=7.7 to 200 GeV. Our results suggest that the magnetic field may not persist long enough to induce a significant splitting between the global spin polarizations of Λ and Λ ̄ at freeze-out stage. However, our results do not rule out the possibility of the magnetic field influencing the spin (anti-)alignment of vector mesons. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.108.044902 ©2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:The relativistic heavy-ion collisions create both hot quark-gluon matter and strong magnetic fields, and provide an arena to study the interplay between quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics. In recent years, it has been shown that such an interplay can generate a number of interesting quantum phenomena in hadronic and quark-gluon matter. In this short review, we first discuss some properties of the magnetic fields in heavy-ion collisions and then give an overview of the magnetic field-induced novel quantum effects. In particular, we focus on the magnetic effect on the heavy flavor mesons, the heavy-quark transports, and the phenomena closely related to chiral anomaly.

Abstract:The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a collective quantum phenomenon that arises from the interplay between gauge field topology and fermion chiral anomaly, encompassing a wide range of physical systems from semimetals to quark-gluon plasma. This review, with a focus on CME and related effects in heavy ion collisions, aims to provide an introductory discussion on its conceptual foundation and measurement methodology, a timely update on the present status in terms of experimental findings and theoretical progress, as well as an outlook into the open problems and future developments.

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions can produce high-temperature and high-density quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter under extremely strong electromagnetic fields, which triggers off many important anomalous chiral phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect and chiral magnetic wave. The anomalous chiral phenomena can help to find the evidence of CP symmetry breaking in the strong interaction, deepen the understanding of the QCD vacuum fluctuations, and disclose the mystery of asymmetry of antimatter-matter in the universe. In this paper, firstly, the magnetic fields are investigated for small and large colliding systems at relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) and large hadron collider (LHC). These studies indicate that collision energy and initial nucleon structure have significant effects on magnetic fields. And, the lifetimes of magnetic field in different media are very different in heavy-ion collisions. Then, in order to study the chiral magnetic effect, some experimental observables are studied by using a multi-phase transport model without or with different strengths of the chiral magnetic effect. For small systems, if QGP exists, the chiral magnetic effect could be observed in the peripheral collisions. For isobaric collisions, the correlators with respect to the spectator plane can imply a much cleaner signal of chiral magnetic effect than that with respect to the participant plane. Our results support that the strength of chiral magnetic effect may be absent or small in isobaric collisions. Next, some new strategies are applied to study the chiral magnetic wave. Moreover, a novel mechanism for the electric quadrupole moment can also explain the charge-dependent elliptic flow of pions generated by the chiral magnetic wave. In addition, some interesting phenomena also occur, owing to the magnetic field in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energy. The directed flow and elliptic flow of photons have no effect on magnetic field at pT < 25 GeV. However, because of the magnetic field, the directed flow of photons decreases and the elliptic flow of photons increases at pT > 25 GeV. Besides, the magnetic field has a significant effect on giant dipole resonance, i.e. the magnetic field increases the angular momentum and enhances some observables of the giant dipole resonance spectrum. In conclusion, magnetic field plays a key role in heavy-ion collisions at both high energy and intermediate energy. It provides an unprecedented opportunity for studying the microscopic laws of nuclear physics. However, there are still many unsolved problems that need further studying in the future.
Extracting the Magnitude of Magnetic Field at Freeze-out in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:A strong magnetic field influences significantly the masses of the charged light mesons. For example, the mass of charged pion increases with the magnetic field increasing. We propose this mechanism as a possible way to extract the magnitude of magnetic field at freeze-out in heavy ion collisions and thus help constrain its lifetime which is currently a major open question to resolve. Specifically we show that the ratio between the yield of charged pions and that of charged rhos is very sensitive to the magnetic field value at freeze-out. By using a viscous-hydrodynamic framework (iEBE-VISHNU) to simulate heavy ion collisions and implementing magnetic-field-dependent meson masses, we compute their yields and predict the dependence of such ratio on the magnetic field. We suggest to use this ratio of charged rho yield over charged pion yield as an experimental observable to extract the possible magnetic field at freeze-out in heavy ion collisions.
The effect of vorticity on the dynamical magnetic fields in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:Magnetic fields in heavy-ion collisions are pivotal and subject to diverse factors. In this study, we quantitatively investigate the impact of fluid vorticity on the evolution of magnetic fields in the 20-50\% centrality class in Au+Au collisions, with collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=(7.7, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, 200)$ GeV. Our results indicate that fluid vorticity leads to a delay in the evolution of the magnetic field, in which this effect becomes more pronounced as the collision energy decreases. Additionally, we have calculated the mean magnetic field values on the freeze-out hypersurface for various collision energies. Our simulation results align with the values inferred from experimental data of $\bar{\Lambda}-\Lambda$, within the error margins.

Abstract:Fermions become polarized in a vortical fluid due to spin-vorticity coupling, and the polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity. The radial expansion converts spatial vortical structures in the transverse plane to spin correlations in the azimuthal angle of final. hyperons' transverse momentum in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Using a (3 + 1)D viscous hydrodynamic model with fluctuating initial conditions from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model, we reveal two vortical structures that are common in many fluid dynamic systems: a right-handed toroidal structure around each beam direction for transverse vorticity and pairing of longitudinal vortices with opposite signs in the transverse plane. The calculated azimuthal correlation of the transverse spin is shown to have a cosine form plus an offset due to the toroidal structure of the transverse vorticity around the beam direction and the global spin polarization. The longitudinal spin correlation in the azimuthal angle shows an oscillatory structure due to multiple vorticity pairs in the transverse plane. Mechanisms of these vortical structures, physical implications of hyperon spin correlations, dependence on colliding energy, rapidity, centrality, and sensitivity to the shear viscosity are also investigated.
