Effect of Mo promoters on catalytic performance of Ni-based catalyst for hydrogenation of naphthalene derivatives

Abstract:Waste tire pyrolysis oil (WTPO) contains the huge volume of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) ca. 10 wt% based on WTPO content. Naphthalene derivatives, family of PAHs, are claimed as toxic components for organism and environment. This consequently limits the direct use of untreated WTPO in combustion engines. In this research, the catalytic hydrogenation was applied for elimination of naphthalene, used as the model compounds of PAHs. Nickelsupported on gamma alumina (Ni/γ-Al2O3) with and without the addition of molybdenum (Mo)-promoter was selected as the catalysts for this process. Without the addition of promoter, the amount of Ni–active metal deposited onto the γ-Al2O3 was in the range of 1-30 wt% prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The maximum naphthalene conversion detected by gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) was achieved to 29.5% when the hydrogenation of naphthalene was carried out using 10 wt% catalyst containing 20 wt% Ni loading under 30 bar initial hydrogen (H2) pressure at 350 oC for 4 h. For the use of Mo-promoter, the naphthalene conversion increased to 44.7% when the Mo/(Ni+Mo) atomic ratio was 0.27.
