Abstract:The corrosion problem affecting ancient Chinese bronze relics and the protective measures required post-excavation are crucial for the study of historical cultural heritage and for ensuring heritage revitalization and sustainable development. This work includes a statistical analysis, clusters information, and thoroughly examines international research on bronze relic corrosion and protection. It delves into the timeline and trends of research, the main countries leading the research efforts, the research content, and the relationships between these factors. A comprehensive review is provided on the corrosion principles, materials, detection methods, and protection techniques for bronze. The study explores the corrosion principles and processes of bronze from a materials science perspective both before and after excavation. It summarizes non-destructive detection methods and examines specific factors that influence corrosion. Furthermore, the article reviews current corrosion protection methods for bronze and related protection materials, including commonly used strategies such as surface corrosion inhibitors and organic resin coatings for protection. It also discusses the potential application of advanced corrosion protection methods in the realm of metal materials in recent years to safeguard bronze. Proposing innovative solutions, the study suggests the possibility of constructing biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces to create a barrier isolating humid air from contacting bronze materials, thereby reducing the adhesion of corrosive media to the substrate and significantly diminishing the likelihood of corrosion. In conclusion, the article looks towards the future, considering the challenges and potential development directions for the corrosion protection of bronze and related protection materials.
STUDY ON CORROSION PRODUCTS OF SOME AMCIENT BRONZES EXCAVATED FROM HUBEI PROVINCE

Abstract:XRD was used to identify corrosion products of samples of ancient bronzes from Zuozhong tombs. The result indicates that the main corrosion products were: Cu2O, SnO2, PbCO3, PbSO4 · 4PbO and SiO2. From the coross-sectional metallography of ancient bronzes, we find that the bronze which was forged after founded can hardly be corroded as well as the bronze with tin sweat on its surface. We also find the α phase was corroded preferentially, while the δ phase of the eutectoid still remains uncorroded. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify corrosion products of samples of ancient bronzes from Jiuliandun tombs. The result indicates that Malachite (CuCO3 · Cu(OH)2) is the main substance of green rust and azurite (2CuCO3 · Cu(OH)2) is the main substance of blue rust. Based on the XRD and Raman analysis, it indicates that O2, CO2, H2O are the main factors for further corrosion of the ancient bronzes. Finally, we proposed scientific measures for protection of these bronzes.

Abstract:XRD, Raman analysis, and metallographic analysis are used to identify corrosion products of ancient bronzesexcavated from Qiaojiayuan tombs, and the result indicates that the corrosion products mainly includesCu2CO3(OH)2, Cu3(OH)2(CO3)2, Cu2O, Cu2Cl(OH)3, CuCl2·2H2O, PbCO3 and SiO2. It was found that theseancient bronzes were preserved in a chloric, acidity, and seasonal changed environment. In addition, the ? phaseof the eutectoid was corroded preferentially in this environment. There are lots of corrosion types in thesebronzes, such as electrochemistry corrosion, hole-corrosion, and dot-corrosion. The corrosion products generallyhave copper oxychloride, moisture copper chloride and other copper chlorination corrosions, and the position ofthe powdery corrosion presents the rust layer structure of “copper- cuprite- paratacamite- malachite- azurite”. Atthe same time, the corrosion principles of the bronzes are discussed, and the simple methods scientificallyprotecting these bronzes are suggested in the final part of the article.

Abstract:There are a large number of bronze collections in Shanxi Museum,and many of them have been seriously corroded under the effects of corrosion in burial environment.In order to provide scientific basis and data support for subsequent restoration and conservation,studies should be done to analyze corrosion conditions of these bronze wares.21 ancient bronze collections were selected as samples,comprehensive analysis was made to corrosion products on the samples to define hazardous corrosion products with optical microscope,polarizing microscope and based upon Raman spectrum analysis.There were 5 kinds of superficial corrosion structures on the surface of this lot of bronze wares.Most of the green corrosion products were malachite and atacamite (major hazardous corrosion product),while some of them were botallackite and brochantite;red and blue corrosion products were cuprite and azurite,respectively.Most of malachite products on the surface of bronze wares are compact and harmless to bronzes,they can be preserved as they have protective effect on bronze wares by preventing copper from contacting air and moisture directly.Atacamite imposes risk of bronzes preservation and shall be completely removed during repair.

Abstract:The corrosion products grown on the bronze wares collected in the Dengzhou Museum,Penglai City,Shandong Province,are analyzed and investigated by Raman Spectroscopy,FTIR and other analytical techniques.The results show that the composition of the corrosion product is complicate,involving cuprite,azurite,malachite,atacamite,paratacamite,cerussite,lanarkite,calcium carbonate.And it is verified that the pale greenish color found on almost the half of the bronzes in the museum is the mixture of atacamite and paratacamite,so these artifacts should be effectively treated and adequately conserved.
[Using Raman spectrum analysis to research corrosive productions occurring in alloy of ancient bronze wares]

Abstract:The present paper analyzes the interior rust that occurred in bronze alloy sample from 24 pieces of Early Qin bronze wares. Firstly, samples were processed by grinding, polishing and ultrasonic cleaning-to make a mirror surface. Then, a confocal micro-Raman spectrometer was employed to carry out spectroscopic study on the inclusions in samples. The conclusion indicated that corrosive phases are PbCO3 , PbO and Cu2O, which are common rusting production on bronze alloy. The light-colored circular or massive irregular areas in metallographic structure of samples are proved as Cu2O, showing that bronze wares are not only easy to be covered with red Cu2O rusting layer, but also their alloy is easy to be eroded by atomic oxygen. In other words, the rust Cu2O takes place in both the interior and exterior parts of the bronze alloy. In addition, Raman spectrum analysis shows that the dark grey materials are lead corrosive products--PbCO3 and PbO, showing the corroding process of lead element as Pb -->PbO-->PbCO3. In the texture of cast state of bronze alloy, lead is usually distributed as independent particles between the different alloy phases. The lead particles in bronze alloy would have oxidation reaction and generate PbO when buried in the soil, and then have chemical reaction with CO3(2-) dissolved in the underground water to generate PbCO3, which is a rather stable lead corrosive production. A conclusion can be drawn that the external corrosive factors (water, dissolved oxygen and carbonate, etc) can enter the bronze ware interior through the passageway between different phases and make the alloy to corrode gradually.

Abstract:The corrosion process and mechanism of three kinds of bronze materials under organic acid‐containing thin electrolyte layer (TEL) are investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel polarization curves. It can be seen from the results that the corrosion rate of three specimens under TELs is lower than that in bulk solution. For bare bronze, the corrosion rate increases with the thickness of TEL, while for Cu 2 O patina bronze and CuCl patina bronze, there exists a critical thickness under TELs where the patina bronze have the maximum corrosion rate. In addition, the results show that Cu 2 O patina could increase the corrosion resistance, while CuCl patina, as a harmful patina, can accelerate the corrosion process. The principal corrosion products identified on the surface of bare bronze and Cu 2 O patina bronze are CuO, Cu(OH) 2 , and Cu(COOH) 2 , while the principal corrosion products identified on the surface of CuCl patina bronze is Cu 2 Cl(OH) 3 .

Abstract:In order to sludy the corrosion mechanism and prolection method for iron object, anlysis was done on corrosion products of difierenl patis (rom severaJ iron objects in Qin and Han Dynasties and experiments were done on iron corrosion products under different conditions. it is found that the ingredients of the corrosion products are very complicated and that a,p, γ- FeO'OH coexistence in the same product is very rare. Moreover,a new protection condition is adopted, under which dry, waterless,salt]fss,oxygen - free,harmful gases free-the iron objects are preserved at their best.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of three bronze ring fragments with distinct corrosion patterns from the Nanhai No.1 shipwreck, employing optical microscopy, SEM–EDS, μ-RS, and μ-EDXRF techniques. The results exhibit that each bronze ring fragment displays unique corrosion characteristics but shares similarities in their patina structures: an outer layer composed of CuFeS 2) and malachite, a subsurface layer of CuS) and/or Copper Tin Sulfide, and an inner copper-depleted layer rich in tin and lead. These layers indicate the artifacts experienced three distinct corrosion stages corresponding to aerobic, anaerobic, and re-aerobic conditions, aligned with the ship's sinking, sediment coverage, and post-recovery scenarios. The study reveals that the pre-anaerobic corrosion products significantly influenced the corrosion kinetics in subsequent environments, affecting the final composition and structure of the patina. Notably, the outer CuS layer, regardless of its compactness, is unable to prevent the selective dissolution of copper from the alloy. The formation of a cuprite layer beneath the copper-depleted layer post-recovery suggests a corrosion resumption due to changes in environmental oxygen levels. These insights emphasize the need for targeted conservation strategies for marine-recovered bronze artifacts, considering their complex corrosion history and environmental interactions.

Abstract:The component of the protected layers from corrosion of a slick bronze lance of spring autumn period and warring states period from Chuxiong was examined by EPMA.The results show that the primary elements in the bronze lance are Cu and Sn,also containing and the concentration of Sn is upto 30.3% (by weight).There is an anticorrosion!layer on the surface of lance.Where the concentration of SnO 2 is upto 83% (by weight).

Abstract:This paper presents the result of scientific examinations carried out on the soil-buried archaeological bronzes Ding from Yin Ruins of China. Eight of typical fragments from different bronze Ding were selected as researched samples according to their deterioration characteristics. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy (SEM-EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to understand the corrosive morphological characteristics, to clear the nature of patina and to analyze the elementary composition of bronze Ding. The results indicated that it is not possible to distinguish the original lustrous metallic surface in most samples because of the corrosive crust. The substrate of bronze Ding contains74–86% Cu, 1.1–4.6% Pb, and 10–18% Sn, which is in agreement with the historical investigation in the ritual vessels of Shang time. Copper-containing compounds were the main constituents of natural patina: Cu2(OH)3Cl existed as corrosion product in all the powdery or crack surface; Cu2(OH)2CO3 was the main corrosive product in a compact and hard corrosive surface. This study provides useful information for the restoration and protection of bronze Ding in Yin Ruins.

Abstract:The corrosion behavior of bare bronze, bronze with Cu2O patina and bronze with CuCl patina under acetic acid-containing thin electrolyte layers (TELs) with various thickness was studied by electrochemical tests, SEM-EDS and XRD analysis. The results indicated that the corrosion rate of these three bronze samples under different TEL thicknesses is lower than that in bulk solutions. Besides, the corrosion rate of bare bronze increases as TEL thickness increases, and as for the bronze with Cu2O patina or bronze with CuCl patina, the critical thickness is about 198 mu m or 152 mu m. Moreover, the Cu2O patina layer can protect the bronze matrix, while the CuCl patina layer will accelerate the corrosion process. The major corrosion products of bare bronze and bronze with Cu2O patina in the acetic acid vapor are Cu2O and hydrate of copper acetate, but for bronze with CuCl patina, the corrosion products on the surface is mainly Cu2Cl(OH)(3).

Abstract:Raman microspectrometry was used to identify the corrosion products from ancient bronzes excavated from Jiuliandun tombs.The results indicate that malachite[CuCO_3·Cu(OH)_2]is the main substance of green corrosion product;azurite [2CuCO_3·Cu(OH)_2]is the main substance of blue corrosion product and parata- camite[Cu_2(OH)_3Cl]is the main substance of slightly green corrosion product.Based on the analytical results, the scientific methods for protection of the ancient bronzes are proposed.

Abstract:We divide the corrosion products on ancient bronzes into two categories, i.e., “inward growth” and “outward growth” corrosions. Several selected Chinese ancient bronzes with the “inward growth” corrosion are studied; and their chemical compositions, microstructures and morphologies are characterized systematically. According to the results, it is found that the “inward growth” corrosion can be further divided into three types, i.e., “noble patina”, “noble-like patina” and “lamellar peeling patina”. We propose that the growth mechanism of the “inward growth” corrosion is that the corrosion initiates at and develops along α-Cu phase. Furthermore, the effect of alloy Sn content on the “inward growth” corrosion is also studied.

Abstract:<p>The present work investigates the corrosion behavior of bronze materials under thin electrolyte layers (TELs) in a simulated atmospheric environment containing formic and acetic acid by electrochemical measurements as well as surface characterization. The results show that the corrosion of bronze under TEL is significantly faster than that in the bulk solution, and the corrosion rate of bronze is the highest when the thickness of TEL is about 100 μm. Formic acid is observed to be more corrosive than acetic acid. Copper formate and copper acetate hydrate appear in the corrosion products formed on the surface of bronze, suggesting that the organic acid participates in the corrosion process of bronze materials in the simulated atmospheric environment.</p>

Abstract:Protective coatings for bronze relics should adhere to the basic principles of cultural relic preservation, such as not altering the color and appearance of the artifacts, and being moderately combined with the artifacts to resist erosion due to external environments (such as water and gas). This paper presents the development of a physically crosslinked supramolecular hydrogel produced from guanidinium-based chitosan (GC). The hydrogel exhibits the excellent adsorption protection of bronze, and the addition of clay enhances the water barrier properties of the chitosan film. The supramolecular interaction between sodium polyacrylate/GC/clay confers corrosion buffering capability to the hydrogel coating in corrosive environments, and the gel coating can be self-healing at room temperature for 24 h. The fabricated nanocomposites were comprehensively characterized using various methods (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, etc.). The electrochemical properties of coated specimens were evaluated, and the impedance spectrum revealed a large impedance arc indicating high charge resistance, which has a corrosion resistance effect.

Abstract:The archeological round bronze coins, nominated as Wu Zhou and regarded as the first issued effective money in the Han Dynasty of China, have been systematically investigated to disclose their chemical composition, nature of the patina and corrosion features on the coin surface by optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with backscattered electron (BSE) detector and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) techniques. It is revealed morphologically that there are some rough surface cracks, pits, and multicolor patina on the surface of the coins. We prove that the coins are made from bronze material of Cu–Sn–Pb–Sb alloy with contents of 84.8–85.4wt.% Cu, 3.3–6.1wt.% Sn, 4.7–6.4wt.% Pb and 2.6–2.9wt.% Sb, and covered by two corrosion layers, 25–35μm for the upper-layer and 20–25μm for the sub-layer. High chloride content has been detected at the interface between the sub-layer and body of the coins. The lead-rich and tin-rich areas in the coin samples indicate the poor metal compatibility during minting in some locations of the coins. The main compositions of patina are ascertained to be Cu2(OH)3Cl, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, Cu2(OH)2CO3, and Pb3O4, and the proposed corrosion mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:The corrosion behavior and corrosion mechanism of the Pb-rich phase and Cu-rich structure of the Sn–Pb bronze alloy in a high-chloride and high-humidity environment were studied. The phase composition of the bronze alloy was analyzed by observing the metallographic and EPMA element distribution, the potential of the microstructure was characterized by SKPFM. The corrosion products and morphology results after electrochemical and neutral salt spray tests were analyzed. The results showed that the matrix structure of bronze material was composed of Pb-rich phase and Cu-rich structure (α(I) phase and (δ+α(II)) eutectoid). During the corrosion process, the rich Pb phase preferentially corroded as the anode and diffused towards the surroundings, while the rich Cu structure served as the cathode. In the rich-Cu structure, compared with δ, the α phase was used as the anode. The corrosion products on the alloy surface mainly included Cu 2 O, PbCO 3 , and Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl. As the corrosion gradually deepened along the depth of α phase, the galvanic couple effect between α phase and δ phase and the "oxygen concentration cell" effect gradually increased.
