Abstract:We present a comprehensive simulation study of the Newtonian and quantum model of a Stern–Gerlach experiment with cold neutrons. By solving Newton's equation of motion and the time-dependent Pauli equation for a wide range of uniform magnetic field strengths, we scrutinize the role of the latter for drawing the conclusion that the magnetic moment of the neutron is quantized. We then demonstrate that a marginal modification of the Newtonian model suffices to construct, without invoking any concept of quantum theory, an event-based subquantum model that eliminates the shortcomings of the classical model and yields results that are in qualitative agreement with experiment and quantum theory. In this event-by-event model, the intrinsic angular momentum can take any value on the sphere, yet, for a sufficiently strong uniform magnetic field, the particle beam splits in two, exactly as in experiment and in concert with quantum theory.

Recent experiments show that the problem could be reasonably revisited. The presented model indicates new issues which could result from exploring a specific kind of objects: topological defects in solids.

Abstract:The prediction of non-local phenomena is a key attribute of quantum mechanics that distinguishes it from classical theories. It was recently suggested that state swapping is one such effect that a fundamentally classical gravitational field cannot give rise to. The reasoning was that the phenomenology of classical fields is restricted to Local Operations and Classical Communication~(LOCC) whereas swapping is a non-LOCC effect, so gravity must not be a classical channel if it can give rise to such a phenomenon. Here, we show that the Hamiltonian of semiclassical gravity results in an evolution of coherent states that is virtually indistinguishable from swapping them, both theoretically and experimentally. Our results indicate that drawing a definitive conclusion about the nature of gravity based solely on its ability to swap a pair of coherent states would be premature. We discuss the implications of these results regarding proposed experimental tests for the quantum nature of gravity and clarify some conceptual issues.

Abstract:Local kinetic and chemical equilibration is studied for Au+Au collisions at 10.7 AGeV in the microscopic Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (UrQMD). The UrQMD model exhibits dramatic deviations from equilibrium during the high density phase of the collision. Thermal and chemical equilibration of the hadronic matter seems to be established in the later stages during a quasi-isentropic expansion, observed in the central reaction cell ($S/A=S/A=s/\rho_B ~\cong~$ 12). At latest stages of the reactions (of order of 10 fm/c) the hadron energy spectra in the cell are nicely reproduced by Boltzmann distributions with a common rapidly dropping temperature. Hadron yields change drastically and at the late expansion stage follow closely those of an ideal gas statistical model. The detailed comparison with the UrQMD box calculations for infinite equilibrated matter is done. It also shows that the system in the central zone reaches the equilibrium at late stages of the reaction. The equation of state seems to be simple at late times: $P\cong0.12\epsilon$ which coincides with Shuryak predictions for the resonance gas. The contribution of the strange particles into the total energy density of the system in the central region of the reaction seems to be of order of 1-3 % (strange particle density in the central zone is negligibly small e.g. $\rho_S=0.008$). The time evolution of other thermodynamical variables in the cell is also presented.

On Removing the Classical-Quantum Boundary

Abstract:We argue that it is the assumption of counterfactual definiteness and not locality or realism that results in Bell inequality violations. Furthermore, this assumption of counterfactual definiteness is not supported in classical mechanics. This means that the Bell inequality must fail classically, effectively removing the classical-quantum boundary, a conclusion prophesized by Bell himself. An implication here is that a local hidden variable theory, in the configuration space of classical mechanics cannot be ruled out. One very surprising result is that classical mechanics, in the context of Hamiltons stationary principle, may in fact have stronger correlations than quantum mechanics, in that it may be the key to beat Tsirelsons bound.

Whence Nonlocality? Removing spooky action at a distance from the de Broglie Bohm pilot-wave theory using a time-symmetric version of de Broglie double solution

Abstract:In this work, we review and extend a version of the old attempt made by Louis de broglie for interpreting quantum mechanics in realistic terms, namely the double solution. In this theory quantum particles are localized waves, i.e, solitons, that are solutions of relativistic nonlinear field equations. The theory that we present here is the natural extension of this old work and relies on a strong time-symmetry requiring the presence of advanced and retarded waves converging on particles. Using this method, we are able to justify wave-particle duality and to explain the violations of Bell's inequalities. Moreover, the theory recovers the predictions of the pilot-wave theory of de Borglie and Bohm, often known as Bohmian mechanics. As a direct consequence, we reinterpret the nonlocal action at a distance presents in the pilot-wave theory. In the double solution developed here there is fundamentally no action at a distance but the theory requires a form of superdeterminism driven by time-symmetry.

Abstract:Globally-constrained classical fields provide a unexplored framework for modeling quantum phenomena, including apparent particle-like behavior. By allowing controllable constraints on unknown past fields, these models are retrocausal but not retro-signaling, respecting the conventional block universe viewpoint of classical spacetime. Several example models are developed that resolve the most essential problems with using classical electromagnetic fields to explain single-photon phenomena. These models share some similarities with Stochastic Electrodynamics, but without the infinite background energy problem, and with a clear path to explaining entanglement phenomena. Intriguingly, the average intermediate field intensities share a surprising connection with quantum "weak values", even in the single-photon limit. This new class of models is hoped to guide further research into spacetime-based accounts of weak values, entanglement, and other quantum phenomena.

Abstract:When classical degrees of freedom and quantum degrees of freedom are consistently coupled, the former diffuse, while the latter undergo decoherence. Here, we construct a theory of quantum matter fields and Nordstrom gravity in which the space-time metric is treated classically. The dynamics is constructed via the classical-quantum path integral and is completely positive, trace preserving (CPTP), and respects the classical-quantum split. The weak field limit of the model matches the Newtonian limit of the full covariant path integral but it is easier to show that the theory is both diffeomorphism invariant, CPTP, and has the appropriate classical limit.

Abstract:Non-Markovian processes may arise in physics due to memory effects of environmental degrees of freedom. For quantum non-Markovianity, it is an ongoing debate to clarify whether such memory effects have a verifiable quantum origin, or whether they might equally be modeled by a classical memory. In this contribution, we propose a criterion to test locally for a truly quantum memory. The approach is agnostic with respect to the environment, as it solely depends on the local dynamics of the system of interest. Experimental realizations are particularly easy, as only single-time measurements on the system itself have to be performed. We study memory in a variety of physically motivated examples, both for a time-discrete case, and for time-continuous dynamics. For the latter, we are able to provide an interesting class of non-Markovian master equations with classical memory that allows for a physically measurable quantum trajectory representation. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.060402 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Several approaches to quantum gravity lead to nonlocal modifications of fields' dynamics. This, in turn, can give rise to nonlocal modifications of quantum mechanics at non-relativistic energies. Here, we analyze the nonlocal Schrödinger evolution of a quantum harmonic oscillator in one such scenario, where the problem can be addressed without the use of perturbation theory. We demonstrate that although deviations from standard quantum predictions occur at low occupation numbers, where they could potentially be detected or constrained by high-precision experiments, the classical limits of quantum probability densities and free energy remain unaffected up to energies comparable with the nonlocality scale. These results provide an example of nonlocal quantum dynamics compatible with classical predictions, suggesting massive quantum objects as a promising avenue for testing some phenomenological aspects of quantum gravity.
