Abstract:In this paper, we first demonstrate how to realize quantum state transferring (QST) from one atom to another based on quantum Zeno dynamics. Then, the QST protocol is generalized to realize the quantum state swapping (QSS) between two arbitrary atoms with the help of a third one. Furthermore, we also consider the QSS within a quantum network. The influence of decoherence is analyzed by numerical calculation. The results demonstrate that the protocols are robust against cavity decay.

Abstract:Distributed quantum information processing requires a reliable quantum memory and a faithful carrier of quantum information. Atomic qubits have very long coherence times and are thus excellent candidates for quantum information storage, whereas photons are ideal for the transport of quantum information as they can travel long distances with a minimum of decoherence. We discuss the theoretical and experimental combination of these two systems and their use for not only quantum information transfer but also scalable quantum computation architectures.

Abstract:Quantum networking relies on entanglement distribution between distant nodes, typically realized by swapping procedures. However, entanglement swapping is a demanding task in practice, mainly because of limited effectiveness of entangled photon sources and Bell-state measurements necessary to realize the process. Here we experimentally activate a remote distribution of two-photon polarization entanglement superseding the need for initial entangled pairs and traditional Bell-state measurements. This alternative procedure is accomplished thanks to the controlled spatial indistinguishability of four independent photons in three separated nodes of the network, which enables us to perform localized product-state measurements in the central node acting as a trigger. This experiment proves that the inherent indistinguishability of identical particles supply promising standards for feasible quantum communication in multinode photonic quantum networks.

Abstract:A scheme is presented for realizing long-distance quantum communication with individual atoms and atomic ensembles. In the scheme, deterministic and storable atom-photon entanglement sources can be obtained by adiabatic evolution of dark states, which makes this scheme largely enhance the efficiency for long-distance entanglement distribution. Furthermore, due to many-atom interference effect, requirement of the strong-coupling condition can be greatly relaxed. Thus this scheme opens an alternate avenue for a scalable quantum network.

Abstract:Quantum state transfer (QST) describes the coherent passage of quantum information from one node in a network to another. Experiments on QST span a diverse set of platforms and currently report transport across up to tens of nodes in times of several hundred nanoseconds with fidelities that can approach 90% or more. Theoretical studies examine both the lossless time evolution associated with a given (Hermitian) lattice Hamiltonian and methods based on the master equation that allows for losses. In this paper, we describe Monte Carlo techniques which enable the discovery of a Hamiltonian that gives high-fidelity QST. We benchmark our approach in geometries appropriate to coupled optical cavity-emitter arrays and discuss connections to condensed matter Hamiltonians of localized orbitals coupled to conduction bands. The resulting Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard and periodic Anderson models can, in principle, be engineered in appropriate hardware to give efficient QST.

Abstract:We propose and analyze a multiphoton-state coherent transport protocol in a coupled-resonator quantum network. A multiphoton swap gate between two antipodes can be achieved with neither external modulation nor coupling strength engineering. Moreover, we extend this result to a coupled-resonator chain of arbitrary length with different coupling strengths. Effects of decoherence via quantum nondemolition interaction are studied with sources including vacuum quantum fluctuation and bath thermal excitations when the bath is in the thermal equilibrium state. These observations are helpful to understand the decoherence effects on quantum communication in quantum coupled-resonator systems.

Abstract:Quantum communication networks are crucial for both secure communication and cryptographic networked tasks. Building quantum communication networks in a scalable and cost-effective way is essential for their widespread adoption, among which a stable and miniaturized high-quality quantum light source is a key component. Here, we establish a complete polarization entanglement-based fully connected network, which features an ultrabright integrated Bragg reflection waveguide quantum source, managed by an untrusted service provider, and a streamlined polarization analysis module, which requires only one single-photon detector for each end user. We perform a continuously working quantum entanglement distribution and create correlated bit strings between users. Within the framework of one-time universal hashing, we provide the first experimental implementation of source-independent quantum digital signatures using imperfect keys circumventing the necessity for private amplification. More importantly, we further beat the 1/3 fault-tolerance bound in Byzantine agreement, achieving unconditional security without relying on sophisticated techniques. Our results offer an affordable and practical route for addressing consensus challenges within the emerging quantum network landscape.

Abstract:As a new functional network supporting communication, quantum network can provide higher security and lower complexity for quantum information processing. Based on the one-to-one quantum state merging and quantum state redistribution, we first generalize them to the multi-to-one situation and give the optimal cost pair for merging or redistributing quantum states from each sender to the receiver in turn. It is proved that previously received information can reduce the cost of the next transfer. Then, using the method of fusion, we propose a state transfer protocol over the multi-access channel network with one intermediate node and provide its optimal cost pair. Finally, two specific examples are given to demonstrate our results when a GHZ-like state or a Werner-type state is taken as the shared entanglement resource.

Abstract:Distributed quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in realizing networks that connect quantum devices. However, sharing entanglement between distant nodes by means of photons is a challenging process primary due to unavoidable losses in the linking channels. In this paper, we propose a simple loss-tolerant protocol for the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state distribution. We analyze the distribution rate under feasible experimental conditions and demonstrate the advantages of rate-loss scaling with respect to direct transmission. Our protocol does not use quantum repeaters and is achievable with current quantum optics technology. The result has direct application to tasks such as conference key agreement or distributed sensing. Moreover, it reduces the requirements for implementing distributed quantum error correction codes such as the surface code.

Abstract:Quantum switching network will play an important role in the field of quantum communication. We propose a new quantum switching scheme where not only the classical data and the unknown quantum state of one particle but also the multi-particle state can be transferred. Moreover, a centralized restoration scheme is used to reduce the switching time for transferring quantum packets containing such unknown multi-particle quantum states. The results demonstrate that we can directly route a multi-particle entanglement packet to its corresponding output ports and further reduce the communication time with the help of centralized restoration scheme.

Abstract:We study the quantum state transfer (QST) in a class of qubit networks with on-site Coulomb interaction, which are described by the generalized Hubbard model with engineered hopping strengths. It is proved that the N-site system of two electrons with opposite spins can be rigorously reduced into N one dimensional engineered single Bloch electron models with central potential barrier. With this observation, we find that such system can perform a perfect QST, the quantum swapping between two distant electrons with opposite spins. Numerical results show that such QST and the resonant tunneling occur for the optimal on-site repulsive interaction.

Abstract:Entanglement-based quantum networks can provide unconditionally secure communication by distributing entangled pairs between distant end nodes. To achieve end-to-end entanglement distribution, multiple operations of entanglement swapping in a quantum repeater chain are always required. However, due to the non-determinism of entanglement swapping caused by imperfect physical devices, the execution pattern of swapping operations has a direct impact on the performance of entanglement distribution, which can be categorized into an entanglement access control (EAC) problem. In this article, we attribute the EAC problem to two aspects: the matching optimization within quantum nodes, and the swapping conflict avoidance between quantum nodes. Accordingly, we propose an asynchronous entanglement distribution protocol which contains a custom weighted maximum matching algorithm, and a reliable signaling interaction mechanism to avoid a swapping conflict, respectively. Based on the proposed protocol, quantum repeaters autonomously decide their behaviors and spontaneously construct the end-to-end entangled pairs asynchronously. Simulation results show that our protocol can significantly improve the entanglement distribution rate and fidelity of end-to-end entangled pairs while simplifying the deployment and management process of the quantum networks.

Abstract:We investigate the schemes of quantum network teleportation for quantum information distribution and concentration, which are essential in quantum cloud computation and the quantum internet. In those schemes, with the prior shared entanglement in the quantum network, the cloud can send simultaneously identical unknown quantum states to clients located in different places. Additionally, with the same entanglement resource, these clients can concentrate their states to the cloud to reconstruct the original state. The number of clients can be beyond the number of identical quantum states intentionally being sent; this quantum network teleportation can make sure that the quantum states' distribution is optimal in the sense that the fidelity achieves the upper bound. These schemes facilitate the quantum information distribution and concentration in quantum networks in the framework of quantum cloud computation. Abstract:Abstract Counterfactual quantum communication is one of the most interesting facets of quantum communication, allowing two parties to communicate without any transmission of quantum or classical particles between the parties involved in the communication process. This aspect of quantum communication originates from the interaction-free measurements where the chained quantum Zeno effect plays an important role. Here, we propose a new counterfactual quantum communication protocol for transmitting an entangled state from a pair of electrons to two independent photons. Interestingly, the protocol proposed here shows that the counterfactual method can be employed to transfer information from house qubits to flying qubits. Following this, we show that the protocol finds uses in building quantum repeaters leading to a counterfactual quantum network, enabling counterfactual communication over a linear quantum network.

Abstract:Quantum communication researchers have achieved significant progress during the recent decades and quantum networking has shown promise in terms of improving the overall functional benefits of the Internet and enabling applications with no counterpart in the classical world. It is a break-through technology towards the unimaginable future. In a quantum network, the source and destination may be connected by quantum repeaters/routers for facilitating qubit transmissions. The quantum network of the future is envisaged to pervade the entire globe, relying on terrestrial components, satellites, airplanes, ships and other vehicles. It is anticipated that it will support nearly unconditional security, super-computing power, large network capacity — even at high velocity — and privacy.

Abstract:A quantum network, which involves multiple parties pinging each other with quantum messages, could revolutionize communication, computing, and basic sciences. The future internet will be a global system of various packet switching quantum and classical networks, and we call it quantum internet. To build a quantum Internet, unified protocols that support the distribution of quantum messages within it are necessary. Intuitively, one would extend classical internet protocols to handle quantum messages. However, classical network mechanisms, especially those related to error control and reliable connection, implicitly assume that information can be duplicated, which is not true in the quantum world due to the no-cloning theorem and monogamy of entanglement. In this article, we investigate and propose protocols for packet quantum network intercommunication. To handle the packet loss problem in transport, we propose a quantum retransmission protocol based on the recursive use of a quantum secret sharing scheme. Other Internet protocols are also discussed. In particular, the creation of logical process-to-process connections is accomplished by a quantum version of the three-way handshake protocol.
