Abstract: This paper is withdrawn. We study the quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol based on a quantum retrodiction protocol, namely the so-called mean king problem. The security is analyzed by considering the eavesdropping on both the preparation of the entangled pair and the transmission of the quantum state. This QKD protocol can generate efficiently a bit of raw key in every single run. We find that, for qubit system, it is more secure than the QKD Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol and the six-state protocol. This QKD protocol works also for higher dimensional system.

Abstract:Quantum memories are enabling devices for extending the reach of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. The required specifications for memories are, however, often considered too demanding for available technologies. One can change this mindset by introducing memory-assisted measurement-device-independent QKD (MDI-QKD), which imposes less stringent conditions on the memory modules. It has been shown that, in the case of {\em fast} single-qubit memories, we can reach rates and distances not attainable by single no-memory QKD links. Single-qubit memories, such as single atoms or ions, have, currently, too slow of an access time to offer an advantage in practice. Here, we relax that assumption, and consider ensemble-based memories, which satisfy the main two requirements of having short access times and large storage-bandwidth products. Our results, however, suggest that the multiple-excitation effects in such memories can be so detrimental that they may wash away the scaling improvement offered by memory-equipped systems. We then propose an alternative setup that can in principle remedy the above problem. As a prelude to our main problem, we also obtain secret key generation rates for MDI-QKD systems that rely on imperfect single-photon sources with nonzero probabilities of emitting two photons.

Abstract:Quantum Key Distribution is a quantum communication technique in which random numbers are encoded on quantum systems, usually photons, and sent from one party, Alice, to another, Bob. Using the data sent via the quantum signals, supplemented by classical communication, it is possible for Alice and Bob to share an unconditionally secure secret key. This is not possible if only classical signals are sent. Whilst this last statement is a long standing result from quantum information theory it turns out only to be true in a non-relativistic setting. If relativistic quantum field theory is considered we show it is possible to distribute an unconditionally secure secret key without sending a quantum signal, instead harnessing the intrinsic entanglement between different regions of space time. The protocol is practical in free space given horizon technology and might be testable in principle in the near term using microwave technology.

Abstract:The measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI QKD) can resist all attacks against measurement devices. However, its practical performance is still limited due to very low coincidence counting rates in Bell-state measurements. In this paper, we propose a practical memory-assisted MDI QKD protocol by cooperating the heralded single-photon sources and an all-optical quantum memory. By making use of the heralding characteristic of heralded single-photon sources, the earlier photon will be stored in the Sagnac optical quantum memory, and then released till another photon's arrival. Moreover, by combining with the decoy-state method, the present work exhibits significantly improved key rates and transmission distances compared with all existing MDI QKD protocols without using quantum memories. Practical long-distance quantum key distribution through concatenated entanglement swapping with parametric down-conversion sources

Abstract:We develop a theory for long-distance quantum key distribution based on concatenated entanglement swapping using parametric down-conversion sources and show numerical results of our model. The model incorporates practical resources including multi-pair sources, inefficient detectors with dark counts and lossy channels. We calculate the maximum secret key-generation ratefor up to three entanglement swapping stations by optimizing over resource parameters, and our numerical simulation shows that the range of quantum key distribution can in principle be markedly increased but at the expense of an atrociously unfeasible secret key-generation rate; however, the upper bound of our key rates closely approach the Takeoka-Guha-Wilde upper bound. Our analysis demonstrates the need for new technology such as quantum memory to synchronize photons and our methods should serve as a valuable component for accurately modelling quantum-memory-based long-distance quantum key distribution.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution allows two parties, traditionally known as Alice and Bob, to establish a secure random cryptographic key if, firstly, they have access to a quantum communication channel, and secondly, they can exchange classical public messages which can be monitored but not altered by an eavesdropper, Eve. Quantum key distribution provides perfect security because, unlike its classical counterpart, it relies on the laws of physics rather than on ensuring that successful eavesdropping would require excessive computational effort. However, security proofs of quantum key distribution are not trivial and are usually restricted in their applicability to specific protocols. In contrast, we present a general and conceptually simple proof which can be applied to a number of different protocols. It relies on the fact that a cryptographic procedure called privacy amplification is equally secure when an adversary’s memory for data storage is quantum rather than classical [1].

Abstract:There has been much interest in quantum key distribution. Experimentally, quantum key distribution over 150 km of commercial Telecom fibers has been successfully performed. The crucial issue in quantum key distribution is its security. Unfortunately, all recent experiments are, in principle, insecure due to real-life imperfections. Here, we propose a method that can for the first time make most of those experiments secure by using essentially the same hardware. Our method is to use decoy states to detect eavesdropping attacks. As a consequence, we have the best of both worlds— enjoying unconditional security guaranteed by the fundamental laws of physics and yet surpassing substantially even some of the best experimental performances reported in the literature.

Abstract:The passive approach to quantum key distribution (QKD) consists of removing all active modulation from the users' devices, a highly desirable countermeasure to get rid of modulator side channels. Nevertheless, active modulation has not been completely removed in QKD systems so far, due to both theoretical and practical limitations. In this Letter, we present a fully passive time-bin encoding QKD system and report on the successful implementation of a modulator-free QKD link. Abstract:Channel loss seems to be the most severe limitation to the application long distance quantum key distribution in practice. The idea of twin-field quantum key distribution can improve the key rate from the linear scale of channel loss in the traditional decoy-state method to the square root scale of the channel transmittance. However, the technical demanding is rather tough because it requests high alignment precision in single-photon interference. Here we demonstrate the real-optical-fiber experimental results of twin-field quantum key distribution through the sending-or-not-sending protocol, which is fault tolerant to large misalignment error. In the experiment, we use the phase locking technology developed in the time and frequency metrology, to make sure the wavelengths of Aliceu0027s and Bobu0027s source are locked to each other and locked to an ultra-stable cavity. The phase reference is then read out with a phase reference pulse. Further with a single photon detector with high detection rate, we obtain the key rates under 4 different distances, 0km, 50 km, 100km and 150km, Especially, the obtained secure key rate at 150 km is higher than that of the measurement device independent QKD.

Abstract:We present improved method of sending-or-not-sending twin-field quantum key distribution (SNS TF-QKD) based on its structure and the application of error rejection. survived bits after error rejection. Taking the finite key effect into consideration with only 10^11 total pulses, we show that the method here exceeds the absolute limit of repeater-less key rate with whatever detection efficiency. We also make comparative study of different protocols numerically. It shows that the method here presents advantageous results at long distance regime and large noise regime, asymptotically or non-asymptotically. Applying the de Finetti theorem, we present the iteration formula of phase-flip error rate for survived bits from odd-parity events only. With this, the performance of SNS protocol can be further improved a lot.

Abstract:To increase dramatically the distance and the secure key generation rate of quantum key distribution (QKD), the idea of quantum decoys-signals of different intensities-has recently been proposed. Here, we present the first experimental implementation of decoy state QKD. By making simple modifications to a commercial quantum key distribution system, we show that a secure key generation rate of 165 bit/s, which is 1/4 of the theoretical limit, can be obtained over 15 km of a telecommunication fiber. We also show that with the same experimental parameters, not even a single bit of secure key can be extracted with a non-decoy-state protocol. Compared to building single photon sources, decoy state QKD is a much simpler method for increasing the distance and key generation rate of unconditionally secure QKD.
Improving BB84 Efficiency with Delayed Measurement via Quantum Memory

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel modification to the BB84 Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocol, aimed at enhancing its efficiency through the use of quantum memory and delayed measurement. In the standard BB84 protocol, the receiver immediately measures the qubits sent by the sender using randomly chosen bases. Due to mismatches between the sender and receiver's bases, a significant portion of the qubits are discarded, reducing the overall key generation rate. Our proposed protocol allows the receiver to store the received qubits in quantum memory and defer measurement until after the sender reveals her basis choices, effectively eliminating the need to discard mismatched qubits. This modification improves the key generation efficiency while maintaining the core security features of the standard BB84 protocol. By avoiding the unnecessary loss of qubits, our protocol achieves a higher secret key rate without introducing additional vulnerabilities. We present a detailed step-by-step explanation of the delayed measurement process. Although this approach does not alter the security guarantees of BB84, it represents a significant improvement in efficiency, making the protocol more viable for large-scale quantum communication networks.
