Abstract:Recently, Newman and Swift[T. J. Newman and M. R. Swift, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2261 (1997)] made an interesting suggestion that the strong-coupling exponents of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation may not be universal, but rather depend on the precise form of the noise distribution. We show here that the decrease of surface roughness exponents they observed can be attributed to a percolative effect.

Abstract:A recent comment on our work (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 110, 016601 (2013)) by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.A.Aligia" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> claims that we "made mistakes in the evaluation of the lesser quantities". It is further claimed that the distribution function of the single-particle selfenergy of the interacting region in the Fermi liquid regime, e.g. at small bias voltage, low temperature, and small frequency, is continuous. These claims are based on a comparison of the particle-hole symmetric case with results obtained from the approach of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.A.Aligia" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. We disagree with these claims and show that the discrepancies that the comment alludes to originate from a violation of Ward identities by the method employed in the comment. A comparison of our approach with the numerical renormalization group shows perfect agreement for the symmetric case.

Abstract:In their recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 094101 (2007)], A. Porporato et al. studied the irreversibility and fluctuation theorem for stationary time series. In this comment, we point out that the fluctuation theorem is in fact the trivial outcome of a symmetry operation, and hence its physical contect is less convincing.

Universal Fluctuations of Local Measurement in Low-Dimensional Systems

Abstract:Probes perform local measurements by interacting with the surrounding system. This often occurs in a dilute system whose effective macroscopic dynamics are diffusive. It is analytically shown here that, for dimensions two or less, the relative uncertainty of any such measurement converges to an explicit universal power law in the long-time limit. The dynamical exponent depends on the dimension, and the prefactor depends solely on the bulk density and the effective mass diffusivity. Simulations of four distinct microscopic models support the results. The results imply that saturation of thermodynamic uncertainty relations cannot be approached for local measurements.

Abstract:In his Comment [1], Philip Strasberg (PS) argues from the analysis of different examples that the framework we have presented in [2] does not recover known results of macroscopic textbook thermodynamics. Here, we show that such apparent contradictions disappear when the necessary assumptions the aforementioned known results pre-suppose are applied. Those assumptions concern the control ability of the observer, the nature of the described degree of freedom, or the scale of the systems. The ability to relax those assumptions is precisely a motivation of our framework, which can explore the capacity of quantum systems to exchange work and heat even at scales not captured by textbook thermodynamics. We take the opportunity of this reply to further expand on the use of our framework and its connections with traditional thermodynamics.

On the universality of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio in non-equilibrium critical dynamics

Abstract:The two-time nonequilibrium correlation and response functions in 1D kinetic classical spin systems with non-conserved dynamics and quenched to their zero-temperature critical point are studied. The exact solution of the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics for a wide class of initial states allows for an explicit test of the universality of the non-equilibrium limit fluctuation-dissipation ratio X_{\infty}. It is shown that the value of X_{\infty} depends on whether the initial state has finitely many domain walls or not and thus two distinct dynamic universality classes can be identified in this model. Generic 1D kinetic spin systems with non-conserved dynamics fall into the same universality classes as the kinetic Glauber-Ising model provided the dynamics is invariant under the C-symmetry of simultaneous spin and magnetic-field reversal. While C-symmetry is satisfied for magnetic systems, it need not be for lattice gases which may therefore display hitherto unexplored types of non-universal kinetics.

Abstract:The Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem suggests a general symmetry in the fluctuations of the entropy production, a basic concept in the theory of irreversible processes, based on results in the theory of strongly chaotic maps. We study this symmetry for some standard models of nonequilibrium steady states. We give a general strategy to derive a 'local' fluctuation theorem exploiting the Gibbsian features of the stationary space-time distribution. This is applied to spin flip processes and to the asymmetric exclusion process.

Abstract:The primary ingredients of reality are the universal quantum fields, which fluctuate persistently, spontaneously, and randomly. The general perception of the scientific community is that these quantum fluctuations are due to the uncertainty principle. Here, we present cogent arguments to show that the uncertainty principle is a consequence of the quantum fluctuations, but not their cause. This poses a conspicuous enigma as to how the universal fields remain immutable with an expectation value so accurate that it leads to experimental results, which are precise to one part in a trillion. We discuss some reasonable possibilities in the absence of a satisfactory solution to this enigma.

Abstract:In statistical physics, if we successively divide an equilibrium system into two parts, we will face a situation that, within a certain length $\xi$, the physics of a subsystem is no longer the same as the original system. Then the extensive properties of the thermal entropy $S($AB$)= S($A$)+S($B$)$ is violated. This observation motivates us to introduce the concept of correlation entropy between two points, as measured by mutual information in the information theory, to study the critical phenomena. A rigorous relation is established to display some drastic features of the non-vanishing correlation entropy of the subsystem formed by any two distant particles with long-range correlation. This relation actually indicates the universal role of the correlation entropy in understanding critical phenomena. We also verify these analytical studies in terms of two well-studied models for both the thermal and quantum phase transitions: two-dimensional Ising model and one-dimensional transverse field Ising model. Therefore, the correlation entropy provides us with a new physical intuition in critical phenomena from the point of view of the information theory.

Abstract:Fluctuation theorems are generalisations of the second law that describe the relations between work, temperature, and free energy in thermodynamic processes and are used extensively in studies of irreversibility and entropy. Many experiments have verified these relations for different physical systems in the setting of thermodynamics. In this study, we observe the same behavior away from physical thermodynamics, namely for the card game UNO, by performing numerical simulations of the game. As the analog of work, we choose the number of steps one player needs to effect a transition in her deck; the other players and the remaining cards play the role of a finite, non-Markovian bath. We also compare our observation with is expected for a Markovian random walk.

Abstract:We propose a fluctuation-dissipation theorem in open quantum systems from an information-theoretic perspective. We define the fidelity susceptibility that measures the sensitivity of the systems under perturbation and relate it to the fidelity correlator that characterizes the correlation behaviors for mixed quantum states. In particular, we determine the scaling behavior of the fidelity susceptibility in the strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking (SW-SSB) phase, strongly symmetric short-range correlated phase, and the quantum critical point between them. We then provide a geometric perspective of our construction using distance measures of density matrices. We find that the metric of the quantum information geometry generated by perturbative distance between density matrices before and after perturbation is generally non-analytic. Finally, we design a polynomial proxy that can in principle be used as an experimental probe for detecting the SW-SSB and phase transition through quantum metrology. In particular, we show that each term of the polynomial proxy is related to the Rényi versions of the fidelity correlators.

Mesoscopic fluctuations in entanglement dynamics

Abstract:Understanding fluctuation phenomena plays a dominant role in the development of many-body physics. The time evolution of entanglement is essential to a broad range of subjects in many-body physics, ranging from exotic quantum matter to quantum thermalization. Stemming from various dynamical processes of information, fluctuations in entanglement evolution differ conceptually from out-of-equilibrium fluctuations of traditional physical quantities. Their studies remain elusive. Here we uncover an emergent random structure in the evolution of the many-body wavefunction in two classes of integrable -- either interacting or noninteracting -- lattice models. It gives rise to out-of-equilibrium entanglement fluctuations which fall into the paradigm of mesoscopic fluctuations of wave interference origin. Specifically, the entanglement entropy variance obeys a universal scaling law, in each class, and the full distribution displays a sub-Gaussian upper and a sub-Gamma lower tail. These statistics are independent of both the system's microscopic details and the choice of entanglement probes, and broaden the class of mesoscopic universalities. They have practical implications for controlling entanglement in mesoscopic devices.

Abstract:The normalized probability density function (PDF) of global measures of a large class of highly correlated systems has previously been demonstrated to fall on a single non-Gaussian "universal" curve. We derive the functional form of the "global" PDF in terms of the "source" PDF of the individual events in the system. A single parameter distinguishes the global PDF and is related to the exponent of the source PDF. When normalized, the global PDF is shown to be insensitive to this parameter and importantly we obtain the previously demonstrated "universality" from an uncorrelated Gaussian source PDF. The second and third moments of the global PDF are more sensitive, providing a powerful tool to probe the degree of complexity of physical systems.

Fluctuations of ergodic sums on periodic orbits under specification

Abstract:We study the fluctuations of ergodic sums using global and local specifications on periodic points. We obtain Lindeberg-type central limit theorems in both situations. As an application, when the system possesses a unique measure of maximal entropy, we show weak convergence of ergodic sums to a mixture of normal distributions. Our results suggest decomposing the variances of ergodic sums according to global and local sources.

Abstract:The weak correlation between spatiotemporal fluctuations in nonequilibrium complex systems is shown to govern the fluctuation distribution, maximizing the conditional entropy associated with such fluctuations. The result is illustrated in diffusion phenomena observed in living cells. A generic feature of the weak correlation is briefly mentioned.
