Abstract:Multidimensional gravitational model on the manifold $M = M_0 \times \prod_{i=1}^{n} M_i$, where $M_i$ are Einstein spaces ($i \geq 1$), is considered. The action contains $m = 2^n -1$ dilatonic scalar fields $\phi^I$ and $m$ (antisymmetric) forms $A^I$. When all fields and scale factors of the metric depend (essentially) on the point of $M_0$ and any $A^I$ is "proportional" to the volume form of submanifold $M_{i_1} \times ... \times M_{i_k}$, $1 \leq i_1 < ... < i_k \leq n$, the sigma-model representation is obtained. A family of "Majumdar-Papapetrou type" solutions are obtained, when all $M_{\nu}$ are Ricci-flat. A special class of solutions (related to the solution of some Diophantus equation on dimensions of $M_{\nu}$) is singled out. Some examples of intersecting p-branes (e.g. solution with seven Euclidean 2-branes for D = 11 supergravity) are considered.}
Numerical analysis of flow characteristics of an atmospheric plasma torch

Abstract:The atmospheric plasma is regarded as an effective method for surface treatments because it can reduce the period of process and does not need expensive vacuum apparatus. The performance of non-transferred plasma torches is significantly depended on jet flow characteristics out of the nozzle. In order to produce the high performance of a torch, the maximum discharge velocity near an annular gap in the torch should be maintained. Also, the compulsory swirl is being produced to gain the shape that can concentrate the plasma at the center of gas flow. Numerical analysis of two different mathematical models used for simulating plasma characteristics inside an atmospheric plasma torch is carried out. A qualitative comparison is made in this study to test the accuracy of these two different model predictions of an atmospheric plasma torch. Numerical investigations are carried out to examine the influence of different model assumptions on the resulting plasma characteristics. Significant variations in the results in terms of the plasma velocity and temperature are observed. These variations will influence the subsequent particle dynamics in the thermal spraying process. The uniformity of plasma distribution is investigated. For analyzing the swirl effects in the plenum chamber and the flow distribution, FVM (finite volume method) and a SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing equations.

Abstract:In the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model of M theory in the presence of longitudinal $M5$-brane, we investigate the effective dynamics of the system by considering the longitudinal $M5$-brane as the background and the spherical $M5$-brane related with the other space dimensions as the probe brane. Due to there exists the background field strength provided by the source of the longitudinal $M5$-brane, an open membrane should be ended on the spherical $M5$-brane based on the topological reason. The formation of the bound brane configuration for the open membrane ending on the 5-branes in the background of longitudinal 5-brane can be used to model the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The description of the excitations of the quantum Hall soliton brane configuration is established by investigating the fluctuations of $D0$-branes living on the bound brane around their classical solution derived by the transformations of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the open membrane. We find that this effective field theory for the fluctuations is an SO(4) non-commutative Chern-Simons field theory. The matrix regularized version of this effective field theory is given in order to allow the finite $D0$-branes to live on the bound brane. We also discuss some possible applications of our results to the related topics in M-theory and to the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system.

Abstract:A candidate supergravity solution of intersecting D7-branes with a fivedimensional intersecting domain (an I5-brane) is presented. This displays an enhanced Poincare symmetry and supersymmetry away from the brane cores. We also explore the possibility of a relation between the intersection region of D7-branes and conifolds through F-theory.
Brane Nucleation in Supersymmetric Models

Abstract:This paper explores the process of vacuum decay in supersymmetric models related to flux compactifications. In particular, we describe these instabilities within supersymmetric Lagrangians for a single three-form multiplet. This multiplet combines scalar fields, representing the moduli fields in four dimensions, with 3-form fields that influence the potential for these moduli via the integer flux of their associated 4-form field strength. Furthermore, using supersymmetry as a guide we obtain the form of the couplings of these fields to the membranes that act as sources to the 3-form potentials. Adding small supersymmetry breaking terms to these Lagrangians one can obtain instanton solutions describing the decay of the vacua in these models by the formation of a membrane bubble. These instantons combine the usual Coleman-de Luccia and the Brown-Teitelboim formalisms in a single unified model. We study simple numerical examples of theories with and without gravity in this new framework and generalize known Euclidean methods to accomodate the simulataneous inclusion of scalar fields and charged membranes to these instanton solutions. Moreover, we show explicitly in these examples how one recovers the static supersymmetric solutions in the limiting case where the supersymmetry breaking terms vanish. In this limit, the bubble becomes infinite and flat and represents a hybrid between the usual supersymmetric domain walls of field theory models and the brane solutions interpolating between the supersymmetric vacua; a sort of dressed supermembrane BPS solution. Finally, we briefly comment on the implications of these solutions in cosmological models based on the String Theory Landscape where these type of 4d effective theories could be relevant in inflationary scenarios.

Generating branes via sigma-models

Abstract:Starting with the D-dimensional Einstein-dilaton-antisymmetric form equations and assuming a block-diagonal form of a metric we derive a $(D-d)$-dimensional $\sigma$-model with the target space $SL(d,R)/SO(d) \times SL(2,R)/SO(2) \times R$ or its non-compact form. Various solution-generating techniques are developed and applied to construct some known and some new $p$-brane solutions. It is shown that the Harrison transformation belonging to the $SL(2,R)$ subgroup generates black $p$-branes from the seed Schwarzschild solution. A fluxbrane generalizing the Bonnor-Melvin-Gibbons-Maeda solution is constructed as well as a non-linear superposition of the fluxbrane and a spherical black hole. A new simple way to endow branes with additional internal structure such as plane waves is suggested. Applying the harmonic maps technique we generate new solutions with a non-trivial shell structure in the transverse space (`matrioshka' $p$-branes). It is shown that the $p$-brane intersection rules have a simple geometric interpretation as conditions ensuring the symmetric space property of the target space. Finally, a Bonnor-type symmetry is used to construct a new magnetic 6-brane with a dipole moment in the ten-dimensional IIA theory.

Abstract:For decades intersecting D-branes and O-planes have been playing a very important role in string phenomenology in the context of particle physics model building and in the context of flux compactifications. The corresponding supergravity equations are hard to solve so generically solutions only exist in a so-called smeared limit where the delta function sources are replaced by constants. We are showing here that supergravity solutions for two perpendicularly intersecting localized sources in flat space do not exist for a generic diagonal metric Ansatz. We show this for two intersecting sources with p = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 spatial dimensions that preserve 8 supercharges, and we allow for fully generic fluxes.

Abstract:The standard extremal p-brane solutions in supergravity are known to allow for a generalisation which consists of adding a linear dependence on the world-volume coordinates to the usual harmonic function. In this note we demonstrate that remarkably this generalisation goes through in exactly the same way for p-branes with fluxes added to it that correspond to fractional p-branes. We relate this to warped orientifold compactifications by trading the Dp-branes for Op-planes that solve the RR tadpole condition. This allows us to interpret the worldvolume dependence as due to lower-dimensional scalars that flow along the massless directions in the no-scale potential. Depending on the details of the fluxes these flows can be supersymmetric domain wall flows. Our solutions provide explicit examples of backreacted orientifold planes in compactifications with non-constant moduli.

Abstract:Large classes of AdS$_p$ supergravity backgrounds describing the IR dynamics of $p$-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface are determined by a solution to the Liouville equation. The regular solutions of this equation lead to the well-known wrapped brane supergravity solutions associated with the constant curvature metric on a compact Riemann surface. We show that some singular solutions of the Liouville equation have a physical interpretation as explicit point-like brane sources on the Riemann surface. We uncover the details of this picture by focusing on $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ arising from M5-branes on a punctured Riemann surface. We present explicit AdS$_5$ solutions dual to these SCFTs and check the holographic duality by showing the non-trivial agreement of 't Hooft anomalies.

Dilatonic p-Branes and Brane Worlds

Abstract:We study a general dilatonic p-brane solution in arbitrary dimensions in relation to the Randall-Sundrum scenario. When the p-brane is fully localized along its transverse directions, the Kaluza-Klein zero mode of bulk graviton is not normalizable. When the p-brane is delocalized along its transverse directions except one, the Kaluza-Klein zero mode of bulk graviton is normalizable if the warp factor is chosen to increase, in which case there are singularities at finite distance away from the p-brane. Such delocalized p-brane can be regarded as a dilatonic domain wall as seen in higher dimensions. This unusual property of the warp factor allows one to avoid a problem of dilatonic domain wall with decreasing warp factor that free massive particles are repelled from the domain wall and hit singularities, since massive particles with finite energy are trapped around delocalized p-branes with increasing warp factor by gravitational force and can never reach the singularities.

Abstract:We construct new families of supersymmetric AdS$_2\times\mathbb{M}_4$ solutions of $D=6$ gauged supergravity and AdS$_3\times\mathbb{M}_4$ solutions of $D=7$ gauged supergravity, where $\mathbb{M}_4$ are four-dimensional toric orbifolds with four fixed points. These are presented in a unified fashion, that highlights the common underlying geometry of the two families. The $D=6$ solutions uplift to massive type IIA and describe the near-horizon limit of D4-branes wrapped on $\mathbb{M}_4$, while the $D=7$ solutions uplift to $D=11$ supergravity and describe the near-horizon limit of M5-branes wrapped on $\mathbb{M}_4$. We reproduce the entropy and gravitational central charge of the two families by extremizing a function constructed gluing the orbifold gravitational blocks proposed in

Abstract:Black hole generalized p-brane solutions for a wide class of intersection rules are presented. The solutions are defined on a manifold that contains a product of n - 1 Ricci-flat internal spaces. They are defined up to moduli functions H_s = H_s(R) obeying a non-linear differential equations (equivalent to Toda-type equations) with certain boundary conditions imposed. Using conjecture on polynomial structure of H_s for intersections related to Lie algebras, new A_2-dyon solutions are obtained. Two examples of these A_2-dyon solutions, i.e. dyon in D = 11 supergravity with M2 and M5 branes intersecting at a point and dyon in Kaluza-Klein theory, are considered.
Intersecting End of the World Branes

Abstract:Dynamical cobordisms implement the swampland cobordism conjecture in the framework of effective field theory, realizing codimension 1 end of the world (ETW) branes as singularities at finite spacetime distance at which scalars diverge to infinite field space distance. ETW brane solutions provide a useful probe of infinity in moduli field spaces and the associated swampland constraints, such as the distance conjecture. We construct explicit solutions describing intersecting ETW branes in theories with multiple scalars and general potentials, so that different infinite field space limits coexist in the same spacetime, and can be simultaneously probed by paths approaching the ETW brane intersection. Our class of solutions includes physically interesting examples, such as intersections of Witten s bubbles of nothing in toroidal compactifications, generalizations in compactifications on products of spheres, and possible flux dressings thereof (hence including charged objects at the ETW branes). From the cobordism perspective, the intersections can be regarded as describing the end of the world for end of the world branes, or as boundary domain walls interpolating between different ETW brane boundary conditions for the same bulk theory.

Abstract:Ten dimensional type IIA and IIB theories with p-branes are compactified to 8-dimensions. It is shown that resulting branes can be classified according to the representations of SL(3, Z) × SL(2, Z). These p-branes can also be obtained by compactification of M theory on three torus and various wrappings of membrane and five brane of the eleven dimensional theory. It is argued that there is evidence for bound states of the branes in eight dimensions as is the case in the interpretation of SL(2, Z) family of string solutions obtained by Schwarz.

Smeared end-of-the-world branes

Abstract:We uncover new non-supersymmetric boundary conditions in 10- and 11-dimensional supergravity whereby spacetime ends on a smeared distribution of D- and M-branes respectively. For example, we find a solution of type IIB supergravity where the AdS$_5\times\mathbb{S}^5$ vacuum ends on an $SO(6)$-invariant distribution of D3-branes. These distributions give a stringy completion of simple models of tensionful end-of-the-world branes considered previously in the literature. However we find that our solutions are all unstable to the fragmentation of the end-of-the-world brane into its constituents.

Abstract:The topic of the paper is the study of germs of local holomorphisms $f$ between $C^n$ and $C^{n'}$ such that $f(M)\subset M'$ and $df(T^cM)=T^cM'$ for $M\subset C^n$ and $M'\subset C^{n'}$ generic real-analytic CR submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions. It is proved that for $M$ minimal and $M'$ finitely nondegenerate, such germs depend analytically on their jets. As a corollary, an analytic structure on the set of all germs of this type is obtained.

B-type D-branes in hybrid models

Abstract:A hybrid model is a fibration of a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold over a geometric base. We study B-type D-branes in hybrid models. Imposing B-type supersymmetry on the boundary action, we show that D-branes are specified by matrix factorisations in the fibre direction, together with some geometric data associated to the base. We also deduce conditions for the compatibility of these branes with the bulk orbifold actions and R-symmetry. We construct examples of hybrid B-branes which are generalisations of well-studied branes in geometric and Landau-Ginzburg models. Hybrid models can arise at limiting points of the stringy Kahler moduli space of Calabi-Yaus, and can be realised as phases of the corresponding gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs). Using GLSM techniques, we establish connections between geometric branes and hybrid branes. As explicit examples, we consider one- and two-parameter Calabi-Yau hybrids with a $\mathbb{P}^1$-base.

Abstract:A bstract We study B-brane superpotentials depending on several closed- and open-moduli on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections. By blowing up the ambient space along a curve wrapped by B-branes in a Calabi-Yau manifold, we obtain a blow-up new manifold and the period integral satisfying the GKZ-system. Via mirror symmetry to A-model, we calculate the superpotentials and extract Ooguri-Vafa invariants for concrete examples of several open-closed moduli in Calabi-Yau manifolds.
