Abstract:We describe the qualitative properties of p-brane solutions of supergravity theories and present two examples of p-brane solutions, first the dyonic membrane solutions of N=2 D=8 supergravity and second the intersecting M-brane solutions of D=11 supergravity.

Abstract:We give a review of some recent work on the construction and classification of $p$-brane solutions in maximal supergravity theories in all dimensions $4\le D\le 11$. These solutions include isotropic elementary and solitonic $p$-branes, dyonic $p$-branes, and multi-scalar $p$-branes. These latter two categories include massless strings and black holes as special cases. For all the solutions, we analyse their residual unbroken supersymmetry by means of an explicit construction of the eigenvalues of the \bog matrix, defined as the anticommutator of the conserved supercharges.

Abstract:Black hole generalized p-brane solutions for a wide class of intersection rules are presented. The solutions are defined on a manifold that contains a product of n - 1 Ricci-flat internal spaces. They are defined up to moduli functions H_s = H_s(R) obeying a non-linear differential equations (equivalent to Toda-type equations) with certain boundary conditions imposed. Using conjecture on polynomial structure of H_s for intersections related to Lie algebras, new A_2-dyon solutions are obtained. Two examples of these A_2-dyon solutions, i.e. dyon in D = 11 supergravity with M2 and M5 branes intersecting at a point and dyon in Kaluza-Klein theory, are considered.

Abstract:We review an approach to the construction and classification of p-brane solitons in arbitrary dimensions, with an emphasis on those that arise in toroidally-compactified M-theory. Procedures for constructing the low-energy supergravity limits in arbitrary dimensions, and for studying the supersymmetry properties of the solitons are presented. Wide classes of p-brane solutions are obtained, and their properties and classification in terms of bound states and intersections of M-branes are described. Abstract:Ten dimensional type IIA and IIB theories with p-branes are compactified to 8-dimensions. It is shown that resulting branes can be classified according to the representations of SL(3, Z) × SL(2, Z). These p-branes can also be obtained by compactification of M theory on three torus and various wrappings of membrane and five brane of the eleven dimensional theory. It is argued that there is evidence for bound states of the branes in eight dimensions as is the case in the interpretation of SL(2, Z) family of string solutions obtained by Schwarz.

A story of non-conformal branes: spindles, disks, circles and black holes

Abstract:We consider the $(p+2)$-dimensional gauged supergravities arising as a consistent truncation of type II on $S^{8-p}$, which are associated with the near-horizon limit of D$p$-branes, for $p=2,4,5,6$ (and NS5-branes for $p=5$). In a truncation of these theories with only abelian gauge fields and scalars, we find several classes of new solutions, with and without supersymmetry. Our ansatz for such backgrounds is inspired by the recent progress in the study of branes wrapped on orbifolds, but unlike those examples we consider "non-conformal branes", $i.e.$ no Anti de Sitter factors in the metric. Focusing on cases with non-trivial gauge fields, we can divide the solutions that we present in three categories: 1) branes wrapping Riemann surfaces, spindles and disks, 2) branes wrapped on a circle with a holonomy for the gauge field along the circle and 3) electrically charged black holes in gauged supergravity, which uplift to rotating branes in ten dimensions. We carefully analyze the conditions for supersymmetry in all these cases.

Abstract:We construct the N=2, D=9 supergravity theory up to the quartic fermionic terms and derive the supersymmetry transformation rules for the fields modulo cubic fermions. We consider a class of p-brane solutions of this theory, the stainless p-branes, which cannot be isotropically oxidized into higher dimensions. The new stainless elementary membrane and elementary particle solutions are found. It is explicitly verified that these solutions preserve half of the supersymmetry.

Abstract:In this series of lectures I present a review of the geometric structures of supergravity in diverse dimensions mostly relevant to p-brane physics and to pinpoint the correspondence between the macroscopic and microscopic description of branes. In particular I review duality transformations, coset manifold structures and the general steps involved by the process of gauging supergravity lagrangians both with respect to compact, non compact and non semisimple groups. I focus specifically on the issue of the Domain Wall field theory correspondence and its relation with the gaugings of supergravity in p+2 dimensions. A complete review of the geometries involved by D=5, N=2 supergravity and of its most general form is given with emphasis on the problem of finding smooth supersymmetric realizations of the Randall Sundrum scenarios. I also give a general review of the algebraic machinery involved by the Solvable Lie algebra description of the scalar manifolds of supergravity and I emphasize its distinguished role in pinpointing the superstring interpretation of supergravity p brane solutions and the macroscopic/microscopic correspondence.
Branes wrapped on quadrilaterals

Abstract:We construct new families of supersymmetric AdS$_2\times\mathbb{M}_4$ solutions of $D=6$ gauged supergravity and AdS$_3\times\mathbb{M}_4$ solutions of $D=7$ gauged supergravity, where $\mathbb{M}_4$ are four-dimensional toric orbifolds with four fixed points. These are presented in a unified fashion, that highlights the common underlying geometry of the two families. The $D=6$ solutions uplift to massive type IIA and describe the near-horizon limit of D4-branes wrapped on $\mathbb{M}_4$, while the $D=7$ solutions uplift to $D=11$ supergravity and describe the near-horizon limit of M5-branes wrapped on $\mathbb{M}_4$. We reproduce the entropy and gravitational central charge of the two families by extremizing a function constructed gluing the orbifold gravitational blocks proposed in

Abstract:Multidimensional gravitational model on the manifold $M = M_0 \times \prod_{i=1}^{n} M_i$, where $M_i$ are Einstein spaces ($i \geq 1$), is considered. The action contains $m = 2^n -1$ dilatonic scalar fields $\phi^I$ and $m$ (antisymmetric) forms $A^I$. When all fields and scale factors of the metric depend (essentially) on the point of $M_0$ and any $A^I$ is "proportional" to the volume form of submanifold $M_{i_1} \times ... \times M_{i_k}$, $1 \leq i_1 < ... < i_k \leq n$, the sigma-model representation is obtained. A family of "Majumdar-Papapetrou type" solutions are obtained, when all $M_{\nu}$ are Ricci-flat. A special class of solutions (related to the solution of some Diophantus equation on dimensions of $M_{\nu}$) is singled out. Some examples of intersecting p-branes (e.g. solution with seven Euclidean 2-branes for D = 11 supergravity) are considered.}
D-branes on general N=1 backgrounds: superpotentials and D-terms

Abstract:We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity of the superpotentials is also studied and a moment map associated to the D-terms is proposed. Among different examples, we discuss an application to the study of D7-branes on SU(3)-structure backgrounds, which reproduces and generalizes some previous results.
D-branes from M-branes

Abstract:The 2-brane and 4-brane solutions of ten dimensional IIA supergravity have a dual interpretation as Dirichlet-branes, or ‘D-branes’, of type IIA superstring theory and as ‘M-branes’ of an S1-compactified eleven dimensional supermembrane theory, or M-theory. This eleven-dimensional connection is used to determine the ten-dimensional Lorentz covariant worldvolume action for the Dirichlet super 2-brane, and its coupling to background spacetime fields. It is further used to show that the 2-brane can carry the Ramond-Ramond charge of the Dirichlet 0-brane as a topological charge, and an interpretation of the 2-brane as a 0-brane condensate is suggested. Similar results are found for the Dirichlet 4-brane via its interpretation as a double-dimensional reduction of the eleven-dimensional fivebrane. It is suggested that the latter be interpreted as a D-brane of an open eleven-dimensional supermembrane.

Abstract:Large classes of AdS$_p$ supergravity backgrounds describing the IR dynamics of $p$-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface are determined by a solution to the Liouville equation. The regular solutions of this equation lead to the well-known wrapped brane supergravity solutions associated with the constant curvature metric on a compact Riemann surface. We show that some singular solutions of the Liouville equation have a physical interpretation as explicit point-like brane sources on the Riemann surface. We uncover the details of this picture by focusing on $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ arising from M5-branes on a punctured Riemann surface. We present explicit AdS$_5$ solutions dual to these SCFTs and check the holographic duality by showing the non-trivial agreement of 't Hooft anomalies.

Abstract:An algebraic method for a general construction of intersecting p-brane solutions in diverse spacetime dimensions is discussed. An incidence matrix describing configurations of electric and magnetic fields is introduced. Intersecting p-branes are specified by solutions of a system of characteristic algebraic equations for the incidence matrix. This set of characteristic equations generalizes a single characteristic equation found before for a special "flower" ansatz. The characteristic equations admit solutions only for quantized values of scalar coupling parameters. A wide list of examples including solutions with regular horizons and non-zero entropy in D=11 and D=10 theories is presented.

Abstract:We consider solutions of (super) gravities associated to non-critical (super) string theories in arbitrary space-time dimension D=p+3, that describe generically non extremal black p-branes charged under NSNS or RR gauge fields, embedded in some non critical vacuum. In the case of vacuum (uncharged) backgrounds, we solve completely the problem obtaining all the possible solutions, that consist of the (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times a linear dilaton times a S^1, and a three parameter family of solutions that include (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the cigar, and its T-dual (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the trumpet. For NSNS charged solutions, we also solve in closed form the problem, obtaining several families of solutions, that include in particular the fundamental non-critical string solution embedded in the cigar vacuum, recently found in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0604202" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0604202">hep-th/0604202</a>, a solution that we interpret as a fundamental non-critical string embedded in the linear dilaton vacuum, and a two-parameter family of regular curvature solutions asymptotic to AdS_{1,2}\times S^1. In the case of RR charged Dp-branes solutions, an ansatz allows us to find a non conformal, constant curvature, asymptotically AdS_{1,p+1} space, T-dual to AdS_{1,p+2}, together with a two-parameter family of solutions that includes the non conformal, AdS black hole like solution associated with the earlier space. The solutions obtained by T-duality are Einstein spaces consisting of a two-parameter family of conformal, constant dilaton solutions, that include, in particular, the AdS black hole of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0403254" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0403254">hep-th/0403254</a>. We speculate about the possible applications of some of them in the framework of the gauge-gravity correspondence.

Abstract:Following is a collection of lecture notes on D-branes, which may be used by the reader as preparation for applications to modern research applications such as: the AdS/CFT and other gauge theory/geometry correspondences, Matrix Theory and stringy non-commutative geometry, etc. In attempting to be reasonably self-contained, the notes start from classical point-particles and develop the subject logically (but selectively) through classical strings, quantisation, D-branes, supergravity, superstrings, string duality, including many detailed applications. Selected focus topics feature D-branes as probes of both spacetime and gauge geometry, highlighting the role of world-volume curvature and gauge couplings, with some non-Abelian cases. Other advanced topics which are discussed are the (presently) novel tools of research such as fractional branes, the enhancon mechanism, D(ielectric)-branes and the emergence of the fuzzy/non-commutative sphere.

Brane Profiles of Non-Supersymmetric Strings

Abstract:We connect the indications of 2D CFT for branes in non-supersymmetric strings to actual spacetime profiles, taking the bulk tadpole potentials into account. We find exact solutions for the uncharged branes that spread in the internal intervals of Dudas-Mourad vacua for non-tachyonic orientifolds and heterotic strings. These solutions involve suitable dressings of the uncharged branes of the nine-dimensional tadpole-free theory. Similar exact results for uncharged branes that are transverse to the internal space, or for charged branes, appear more challenging. Nevertheless, we identify their large-distance behavior, which is determined by linearized equations, and show that it is compatible with the CFT analysis in all expected cases. We also provide some hints on the leading back-reaction of the form-fields.
