Abstract:We study a general dilatonic p-brane solution in arbitrary dimensions in relation to the Randall-Sundrum scenario. When the p-brane is fully localized along its transverse directions, the Kaluza-Klein zero mode of bulk graviton is not normalizable. When the p-brane is delocalized along its transverse directions except one, the Kaluza-Klein zero mode of bulk graviton is normalizable if the warp factor is chosen to increase, in which case there are singularities at finite distance away from the p-brane. Such delocalized p-brane can be regarded as a dilatonic domain wall as seen in higher dimensions. This unusual property of the warp factor allows one to avoid a problem of dilatonic domain wall with decreasing warp factor that free massive particles are repelled from the domain wall and hit singularities, since massive particles with finite energy are trapped around delocalized p-branes with increasing warp factor by gravitational force and can never reach the singularities.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the relationship between generalized dilatonic p-branes and the Randall-Sundrum (RS) scenario in high-dimensional spaces, particularly in terms of gravitational localization properties. Specifically, the paper attempts to address the following core issues:
1. **Normalization of the Graviton Kaluza-Klein Zero Mode**: When the p-brane is fully localized in its transverse directions, the graviton's Kaluza-Klein zero mode cannot be normalized, which means that gravity in the (p+1)-dimensional world volume cannot be realized through the zero mode. However, if the p-brane is non-localized in all but one of its transverse directions, the graviton's Kaluza-Klein zero mode can be normalized.
2. **Properties of the Dilatonic Factor**: For non-localized p-branes, when the dilatonic factor increases, the graviton's Kaluza-Klein zero mode can be normalized, and there exists a singularity at a finite distance. In this case, massive particles with finite energy are attracted by gravity towards the vicinity of the p-brane and never reach the singularity. This is different from the domain wall scenario with a decreasing dilatonic factor, where massive particles are repelled away from the domain wall and eventually hit the singularity.
3. **Implementation of Gravitational Localization**: To realize a model similar to the RS scenario within the string theory framework, it is necessary to consider some compactification of the transverse directions or restrict the range of the radial coordinate, so that our four-dimensional world can be embedded within the higher-dimensional world volume of the p-brane.
In summary, the paper aims to investigate how to achieve effective gravitational localization by adjusting the structure of the p-brane and the properties of its dilatonic factor, and to explore its potential applications in addressing the hierarchy problem in gravity.
