Abstract:Near horizon geometries of D$p$-branes with $p\neq 3$ are singular with a running dilaton. Bound states of D$p$ branes with their magnetic cousins, D$(6-p)$ branes, can stabilise the dilaton such that an AdS factor might appear in the near horizon region, potentially leading to a chain of AdS vacua of the form $AdS_{p+2}\times S^{p+2} \times \mathbb{T}^{6-2p}$. The solutions with $p=-1, 1, 3$ are supersymmetric with the cases $p=1, 3$ being well-known examples already. We construct the explicit (partially smeared) brane bound state solutions for all such configurations where the cases $p=-1,2$ are entirely novel and we find no AdS geometry for these. The two novel classes of solutions feature ghost branes (negative tension branes), and we suggest they are physical for the D$(-1)-$D$7$ solutions but unphysical for the D$2-$D$4$ solutions. The bound state of a D$(-1)$ and a D7 brane in supergravity was only hinted upon recently in \cite{Aguilar-Gutierrez:2022kvk} and here we correct the solution in order to preserve supersymmetry and find that the dilaton can indeed be stabilised which indicates there could be a holographic dual matrix theory which generalises the IKKT matrix model to allow for conformal invariance.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to construct and analyze the bound - state solutions between D p - and D (6−p)-branes in different dimensions, especially when \( p = - 1,0,1,2,3 \). These solutions can allow for smooth horizons in some cases, and may then lead to AdS/CFT dual pairs. Specifically: 1. **Understanding p - brane bound states**: Although some basic p - brane bound states are already known, they are usually smeared in certain directions. This paper aims to provide more complete, unsmeared solutions to expand our understanding of p - brane bound states, especially for non - supersymmetric bound states. 2. **Exploring AdS/CFT duality**: By studying the near - horizon geometries of these bound states, the author hopes to find backgrounds that can support AdS/CFT duality. In particular, for the case of \( p=-1 \), the author proposes a possible holographic dual matrix model, which may imply that space emerges from matrices. ### Main contributions - **New bound - state solutions**: The article provides explicit solutions for D0 - D6, D2 - D4 and D(-1)-D7 bound states, among which the solutions for D2 - D4 and D(-1)-D7 are completely new. - **Correction and verification**: For the D(-1)-D7 bound state, the article corrects the previously proposed solution to make it supersymmetric and verifies that the dilaton can be stabilized, which indicates that there may be a holographic dual matrix theory. - **Physical significance**: Discusses the physical significance of these solutions, especially regarding the existence of ghost branes and their influence on the physical properties of the solutions. ### Formulas and methods - **Dilaton equation**: \[ \nabla\partial\phi=\frac{3 - p}{(p + 2)!}4e^{\frac{3 - p}{2}\phi}F_{p+2}^2+\ldots \] where \( F_{p+2} \) is the field - strength tensor. - **D0 - D6 solution**: \[ ds_{10}^2 = g_s^{1/2}\left(-H_0^{-1/2}H_6^{-1/2}dt^2 + H_0^{1/2}H_6^{1/2}(dr^2 + r^2d\Omega_2^2)+H_0^{1/2}H_6^{-1/2}\delta_{ij}d\theta_id\theta_j\right) \] \[ e^\phi = g_s\left(\frac{H_0}{H_6}\right)^{3/4} \] \[ F = Q_6d\Omega_2+g_s^{-3/2}Q_0H_0^{-2}H_6\frac{1}{r^2}dt\wedge dr \] - **D2 - D4 solution**: Since the B - field is required, the solution is more complicated and involves the interactions of multiple scalar fields and form fields. The article directly obtains some solutions by solving the Killing spinor equation. - **D(-1)-D7 solution**: \[ ds^2 = M_x(y)^2dx^2+M_y(y)^2dy^2+M_1(y)^2\sum_{i = 1}^4(d\theta_i)^2+M_5(y)^2\sum_{i = 5}^8(d\theta_i)^2 \] \[ F_5=(1 - i\star)F,\quad F = d\theta_{1234}\wedge(\gamma(y)dx + i\delta(y)dy) \] \[ F_1=\alpha(y)dx + i\beta(y)dy \] ### Conclusion By constructing and analyzing these bound - state solutions, the article not only expands our understanding of p - brane bound states, but also provides new opportunities for further exploring AdS/CFT duality.
