Abstract:Non-sharp notches, formed by geometric features within the girth welds, pose a significant threat to the safety of pipeline structures. Nevertheless, analysis targeting the fracture behavior of joints with mixed geometric discontinuity features remains mostly ambiguous. In this study, the stress state and the critical strain states of girth welds with various discontinuous features (such as misalignment, variable wall thickness and notch radius) under different internal pressure are comprehensively characterized via finite element analysis. Then, the modified single-edge notch tensile (MSENT) specimens are designed and manufactured, and the fracture behavior is monitored via digital image correlation (DIC) and fractographic analysis. Moreover, based on the Modified Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) failure criterion, a newly proposed equivalent correlation between geometric discontinuous features and crack depths is established and validated via numerical-experimental analysis. The calculation results reveal that geometric discontinuity features significantly enhance the stress state at the non-sharp notches. Intensified geometric discontinuity features correspond to deeper cracks, and the maximum depth can reach 2.5 mm. The study herein comes out with a new assessment method for evaluating the synergistic effect of geometric features within the girth welds, which provides a promising reference for the integrity assessment of pipeline weld structures.
