Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. We discuss various properties of nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, which have previously only been considered over $\mathbb{C}$. Using a combination of theoretical and computational methods, we extend to positive characteristic various calculations of de Graaf with nilpotent orbits in exceptional Lie algebras. In particular, we classify those orbits which are reachable, those which satisfy a certain related condition due to Panyushev, and determine the codimension in the centraliser $\mathfrak{g}_e$ of its the derived subalgebra $[\mathfrak{g}_e,\mathfrak{g}_e]$. Some of these calculations are used to show that the list of rigid nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, the classification of sheets of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the distribution of the nilpotent orbits amongst them are independent of good characteristic, remaining the same as in the characteristic zero case. We also give a comprehensive account of the theory of sheets in reductive Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of good characteristic.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:With a view to determining character values of finite reductive groups at unipotent elements, we prove a number of results concerning inner products of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters with characteristic functions of character sheaves, here called Lusztig functions. These are used to determine projections of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters to the space of unipo- tent characters, and to the space of characters with a given wave front set. Such projections are expressed largely in terms of Weyl group data. We show how the values of characters at their unipotent support or wave front set are determined by such data. In some exceptional groups we show that the projection of a generalised Gelfand-Graev character to a family with the same wave front set is (up to sign) the dual of a Mellin transform. Using these results, in certain cases we are able to determine roots of unity which relate almost characters to the characteristic functions. In particular we show how to compute the values of all unipotent characters at all unipotent classes for the exceptional adjoint groups of type G2, F4, E6, E7 and E8. We also pro- vide an appendix which gives a complete list of the cuspidal character sheaves on all quasi-simple groups.

Subregular nilpotent orbits and explicit character formulas for modules over affine Lie algebras

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple finite dimensional complex Lie algebra and let $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$ be the corresponding affine Lie algebra. Kac and Wakimoto observed that in some cases the coefficients in the character formula for a simple highest weight $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-module are either bounded or are given by a linear function of the weight. We explain and generalize this observation using Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, by computing values at $q=1$ of certain (parabolic) affine inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In particular, we obtain explicit character formulas for some $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-modules of negative integer level $k$ when $\mathfrak g$ is of type $D_n$, $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ and $k \geqslant -2, -3, -4, -6$ respectively, as conjectured by Kac and Wakimoto. The calculation relies on the explicit description of the canonical basis in the cell quotient of the anti-spherical module over the affine Hecke algebra corresponding to the subregular cell. We also present an explicit description of the corresponding objects in the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution, they correspond to irreducible objects in the heart of a certain $t$-structure related to the so called non-commutative Springer resolution.

Abstract:In this article, by studying the Bernstein degrees and Goldie rank polynomials, we establish a comparison between the irreducible representations of G = GL n （C） possessing the minimal Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and those induced from finite-dimensional representations of the maximal parabolic subgroup of G of type（n-1, 1）. We give the transition matrix between the two bases for the corresponding coherent families.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:This article provides a geometric bridge between two entirely different character formulas for reductive Lie groups and answers the question posed by W.Schmid in [Sch]. A corresponding problem in the compact group setting was solved by N.Berline, E.Getzler and M.Vergne in [BGV] by an application of the theory of equivariant forms and particularly the fixed point integral localization formula. This article (besides its representation-theoretical significance) provides a whole family of examples where it is possible to localize integrals to fixed points with respect to an action of a NONcompact group. Moreover, a localization argument given here is not specific to the particular setting considered in this article and can be extended to a more general situation. There is a broadly accessible article [L] which explains how the argument works in the SL(2,R) case, where the key ideas are not obstructed by technical details and where it becomes clear how it extends to the general case.

Our arguments rely on the symplectic structure of the character variety, emphasizing this geometric perspective over its algebraic properties.

Abstract:The article presents several methods for the arithmetic of finite abelian groups. We introduce a tool - already used by Delsarte in [1] as I found out later - analogous to Dirichlet's convolution to obtain combinatorial results on these groups. Using this convolution and some group actions, we deduce an interesting fact : the number of generating subsets of a finite abelian group is always a multiple of the order of the group. Eventually, we prove a theorem about the generation of the group of permutations of an abelian group G using only transpositions and translations from the group G.

Abstract:We construct a family of orthogonal characters of an algebra group which decompose the supercharacters defined by Diaconis and Isaacs. Like supercharacters, these characters are given by nonnegative integer linear combinations of Kirillov functions and are induced from linear supercharacters of certain algebra subgroups. We derive a formula for these characters and give a condition for their irreducibility; generalizing a theorem of Otto, we also show that each such character has the same number of Kirillov functions and irreducible characters as constituents. In proving these results, we observe as an application how a recent computation by Evseev implies that every irreducible character of the unitriangular group $\UT_n(q)$ of unipotent $n\times n$ upper triangular matrices over a finite field with $q$ elements is a Kirillov function if and only if $n\leq 12$. As a further application, we discuss some more general conditions showing that Kirillov functions are characters, and describe some results related to counting the irreducible constituents of supercharacters.

Abstract:We complete the study of characters on higher rank semisimple lattices initiated in [BH19,BBHP20], the missing case being the case of lattices in higher rank simple algebraic groups in arbitrary characteristics. More precisely, we investigate dynamical properties of the conjugation action of such lattices on their space of positive definite functions. Our main results deal with the existence and the classification of characters from which we derive applications to topological dynamics, ergodic theory, unitary representations and operator algebras. Our key theorem is an extension of the noncommutative Nevo-Zimmer structure theorem obtained in [BH19] to the case of simple algebraic groups defined over arbitrary local fields. We also deduce a noncommutative analogue of Margulis' factor theorem for von Neumann subalgebras of the noncommutative Poisson boundary of higher rank arithmetic groups.

Abstract:We study the decomposition of certain reducible characters of classical groups as the sum of irreducible ones. Let ${\mathbf G}$ be an algebraic group of classical type with defining characteristic $p>0$, $\mu$ a dominant weight and $W$ the Weyl group of ${\mathbf G}$. Let $G=G(q)$ be a finite classical group, where $q$ is a $p$-power. For a weight $\mu$ of ${\mathbf G}$ the sum $s_\mu$ of distinct weights $w(\mu)$ with $w\in W$ viewed as a function on the semisimple elements of $G$ is known to be a generalized Brauer character of $G$ called an orbit character of $G$. We compute, for certain orbit characters and every maximal torus $T$ of $G$, the multiplicity of the trivial character $1_T$ of $T$ in $s_\mu$. The main case is where $\mu=(q-1)\omega$ and $\omega$ is a fundamental weight of ${\mathbf G}$. Let $St$ denote the Steinberg character of $G$. Then we determine the unipotent characters occurring as constituents of $s_\mu\cdot St$ defined to be 0 at the $p$-singular elements of $G$. Let $\beta_\mu$ denote the Brauer character of a representation of $SL_{n}(q)$ arising from an irreducible representation of ${\mathbf G}$ with highest weight $\mu$. Then we determine the unipotent constituents of the characters $\beta_\mu\cdot St$ for $\mu=(q-1)\omega$, and also for some other $\mu$ (called strongly $q$-restricted). In addition, for strongly restricted weights $\mu$, we compute the \mult of $1_T$ in the restriction $\beta_\mu|_T$ for every maximal torus $T$ of $G$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over the complex numbers and let $T\subset G$ be a maximal torus. For any $t\in T$ of finite order and any irreducible representation $V(\lambda)$ of $G$ of highest weight $\lambda$, we determine the character $ch(t, V(\lambda))$ by using the Lefschetz Trace Formula due to Atiyah-Singer and explicitly determining the connected components and their normal bundles of the fixed point subvariety $(G/P)^t\subset G/P$ (for any parabolic subgroup $P$). This together with Wirtinger's theorem gives an asymptotic formula for $ch(t, V(n\lambda))$ when $n$ goes to infinity.

Abstract:Clausen a prédit que le groupe des classes d'idèles de Chevalley d'un corps de nombres F apparaît comme le premier K-groupe de la catégorie des F-espaces vectoriels localement compacts. Cela s'est avéré vrai, et se généralise même aux groupes K supérieurs dans un sens approprié. Nous remplaçons F par une -algèbre semi-simple, et obtenons le groupe des classes d'idèles noncommutatif de Fröhlich de manière analogue, modulo les éléments de norme réduite une. Même dans le cas du corps de nombres, notre preuve est plus simple que celle existante, et repose sur le théorème de localisation pour des sous-catégories percolées. Enfin, en utilisant la théorie des corps de classes, nous interprétons la loi de réciprocité d'Hilbert (ainsi qu'une variante noncommutative) en termes de nos résultats. Clausen predicted that Chevalley's idèle class group of a number field F appears as the first K-group of the category of locally compact F-vector spaces. This has turned out to be true and even generalizes to the higher K-groups in a suitable sense. We replace F by a semisimple -algebra and obtain Fröhlich's noncommutative idèle class group in an analogous fashion, modulo the reduced norm one elements. Even in the number field case, our proof is simpler than the existing one and based on the localization theorem for percolating subcategories. Finally, using class field theory as input, we interpret Hilbert's reciprocity law (as well as a noncommutative variant) in terms of our results.
