Abstract:Recently Zagier proved a remarkable q-series identity. We show that this identity can also be proved by modifying Franklin's classical proof of Euler's pentagonal number theorem.

Abstract:Zagier provided eleven conjectural rank two examples for Nahm's problem. All of them have been proved in the literature except for the fifth example, and there is no q-series proof for the tenth example. We prove that the fifth and the tenth examples are in fact equivalent. Then we give a q-series proof for the fifth example, which confirms a recent conjecture of Wang. This also serves as the first q-series proof for the tenth example, whose explicit form was conjectured by Vlasenko and Zwegers in 2011 and whose modularity was proved by Cherednik and Feigin in 2013 via nilpotent double affine Hecke algebras.

Abstract:Let $r\geq 1$ be a positive integer, $A$ a real positive definite symmetric $r\times r$ matrix, $B$ a vector of length $r$, and $C$ a scalar. Nahm's problem is to describe all such $A,B$ and $C$ with rational entries for which a specific $r$-fold $q$-hypergeometric series (denoted by $f_{A,B,C}(q)$) involving the parameters $A,B,C$ is modular. When the rank $r=2$, Zagier provided eleven sets of examples of $(A,B,C)$ for which $f_{A,B,C}(q)$ is likely to be modular. We present a number of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities involving double sums, which give modular representations for Zagier's rank two examples. Together with several known cases in the literature, we verified ten of Zagier's examples and give conjectural identities for the remaining example.

A simple proof of the Zolotareff-Frobenius theorem

Abstract:We give a noncomputational, elementary group-theoretic proof of the Zolotareff-Frobenius Theorem. We use no results from the theory of quadratic residues. Let A and k be coprime positive integers with k odd and greater than 1. By the symbol Z(h,k) we mean the sign of the permutation m induced on the residue classes modulo k obtained by multiplication by A. Theorem (Zolotareff-Frobenius). Zih,k) = (A/A:), the usual Jacobi symbol. Zolotareff [5] first proved this theorem for prime k. Frobenius, cf. [1], then found the general result and Lerch [2], Riesz [4] and Meyer [3] gave subsequent proofs. All these proofs of the general result are, to varying degrees, computational and it is our aim to give a noncomputational, elementary group-theoretic proof in the spirit of Zolotareff s original work. In the following, Sym (X) denotes the symmetric group on the finite set X. We also write sgn tr = 1 or 1 according as tr is an even or odd permutation of X, so that sgn: Sym(X) —» {1,-1} is the usual group homomorphism. Abstract:Several specific Franklin squares and magic squares are decomposed into their quotient and remainder squares. The results support the conjecture that Franklin used the Eulerian composition method to construct many of his squares. This method also can be used to construct new Franklin squares as illustrated herein.

Abstract:A proof of several identities of Ramanujan involving theta functions of level $7$ is given which uses a specific modular function for $\Gamma_1(7)$ and Klein's projective representation of $PSL(2,7)$ into $PSL(3, \mathbb{C})$. Four identities of Berndt and Zhang are derived as algebraic corollaries of the main proof.

Abstract:Interior perfect fluid solutions for the Reissner-Nordstrom metric are studied on the basis of a new classification scheme. It specifies which two of the fluid's characteristics are given functions and picks up accordingly one of the three main field equations, the other two being universal. General formulae are found for charged de Sitter solutions, the case of constant energy component of the energy-momentum tensor, the case of known pressure (including charged dust) and the case of linear equation of state. Explicit new global solutions, mainly in elementary functions, are given as illustrations. Known solutions are briefly reviewed and corrected.

Abstract:Dedekind's proof of the Cantor–Bernstein theorem is based on his chain theory, not on Cantor's well-ordering principle. A careful analysis of the proof extracts an argument structure that can be seen in the many other proofs that have been given since. I contend there is essentially one proof that comes in two variants due to Dedekind and Zermelo , respectively. This paper is a case study in analysing proofs of a single theorem within a given methodological framework, here Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (ZF). It uses tools from proof theory, but focuses on heuristic ideas that shape proofs and on logical strategies that help to construct them. It is rooted in a perspective on Beweistheorie that predates its close connection and almost exclusive attention to the goals of Hilbert's finitist consistency programme. This earlier perspective can be brought to life (only) with the support of powerful computational tools. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The notion of ‘simple proof’ - Hilbert's 24th problem’.

Abstract:The conjecture of Lehmer is proved to be true. The proof mainly relies upon: (i) the properties of the Parry Upper functions $f_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ associated with the dynamical zeta functions $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ of the Rényi--Parry arithmetical dynamical systems, for $\alpha$ an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of house "$house(\alpha)$" greater than 1, (ii) the discovery of lenticuli of poles of $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ which uniformly equidistribute at the limit on a limit "lenticular" arc of the unit circle, when $house(\alpha)$ tends to $1^+$, giving rise to a continuous lenticular minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ of the Mahler measure ${\rm M}(\alpha)$, (iii) the Poincaré asymptotic expansions of these poles and of this minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ as a function of the dynamical degree. With the same arguments the conjecture of Schinzel-Zassenhaus is proved to be true. An inequality improving those of Dobrowolski and Voutier ones is obtained. The set of Salem numbers is shown to be bounded from below by the Perron number $\theta_{31}^{-1} = 1.08545\ldots$, dominant root of the trinomial $-1 - z^{30} + z^{31}$. Whether Lehmer's number is the smallest Salem number remains open. A lower bound for the Weil height of nonzero totally real algebraic numbers, $\neq \pm 1$, is obtained (Bogomolov property). For sequences of algebraic integers of Mahler measure smaller than the smallest Pisot number, whose houses have a dynamical degree tending to infinity, the Galois orbit measures of conjugates are proved to converge towards the Haar measure on $|z|=1$ (limit equidistribution).

Counterexamples to Zagier's Duality Conjecture on Nahm Sums

Abstract:Given any positive integer $r$, Nahm's problem is to determine all rational $r\times r$ positive definite matrix $A$, $r$-dimensional rational vector $B$ and rational scalar $C$ such that the rank $r$ Nahm sum associated with $(A,B,C)$ is modular. Around 2007, Zagier conjectured that if the rank $r$ Nahm sum for $(A,B,C)$ is modular, then so is the dual Nahm sum associated with $(A^{-1},A^{-1}B,B^\mathrm{T} A^{-1}B/2-{r}/{24}-C)$. We construct some explicit rank four Nahm sums wherein the original Nahm sum is modular while its dual is not modular. This provides counterexamples to Zagier's conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an elementary account into Zagier's formula for multiple zeta values involving Hoffman elements. Our approach allows us to obtain direct proof in a special case via rational zeta series involving the coefficient $\zeta(2n)$. This formula plays an important role in proving Hoffman's conjecture which asserts that every multiple zeta value of weight $k$ can be expressed as a $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combinations of multiple zeta values of the same weight involving $2$'s and $3$'s. Also, using a similar hypergeometric argument via rational zeta series, we produce a new Zagier-type formula for the multiple special Hurwitz zeta values.

Abstract:In 2003, Zudilin presented a $q$-analogue of Euler's identity for one of the variants of $q$-double zeta function. This article focuses on exploring identities related to another variant of $q$-double zeta function and its star variant. Using a $q$-analogue of the Nielsen Reflexion Formula for $q>1$, we investigate identities involving different versions of $q$-analogues of the Riemann zeta function and the double-zeta function. Additionally, we analyze the behavior of $\zeta_q(s_1, s_2)$ as $s_1$ and $s_2$ approach to $0$ and compare these limits to those of the classical double-zeta function. Finally, we discuss the $q$-analogue of the Mordell-Tornheim $r$-ple zeta function and its relation with the $q$-double zeta function.

A combinatorial proof of an identity involving Eulerian numbers

Abstract:We give a combinatorial proof of an identity that involves Eulerian numbers and was obtained algebraically by Brenti and Welker (2009). To do so, we study alcoved triangulations of dilated hypersimplices. As a byproduct, we describe the dual graph of the triangulation in the case of the standard simplex, conjecture its structure for general hypersimplices, and prove combinatorially that the Eulerian numbers coincide with the normalized volumes of the hypersimplices.

A conjecture of Zagier and the value distribution of quantum modular forms

Abstract:In his influential paper on quantum modular forms, Zagier developed a conjectural framework describing the behavior of certain quantum knot invariants under the action of the modular group on their arguments. More precisely, when $J_{K,0}$ denotes the colored Jones polynomial of a knot $K$, Zagier's modularity conjecture describes the asymptotics of the quotient $J_{K,0} (e^{2 \pi i \gamma(x)}) / J_{K,0}(e^{2 \pi i x})$ as $x \to \infty$ along rationals with bounded denominators, where $\gamma \in \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. This problem is most accessible for the figure-eight knot $4_1$, where the colored Jones polynomial has a simple explicit expression in terms of the $q$-Pochhammer symbol. Zagier also conjectured that the function $h(x) = \log (J_{4_1,0} (e^{2 \pi i x}) / J_{4_1,0}(e^{2 \pi i /x}))$ can be extended to a function on $\mathbb{R}$ which is continuous at irrationals. In the present paper, we prove Zagier's continuity conjecture for all irrationals for which the sequence of partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion is unbounded. In particular, the continuity conjecture holds almost everywhere on the real line. We also establish a smooth approximation of $h$, uniform over all rationals, in accordance with the modularity conjecture. As an application, we find the limit distribution (after a suitable centering and rescaling) of $\log J_{4_1,0}(e^{2 \pi i x})$, when $x$ ranges over all reduced rationals in $(0,1)$ with denominator at most $N$, as $N \to \infty$, thereby confirming a conjecture of Bettin and Drappeau.

Abstract:Recently, Chan and Wang proved numerous congruences satisfied by $$p_{a/b}(n)$$, where $$p_{a/b}(n)$$ denotes the coefficient of $$q^n$$ in the series expansion of $$(q;q)_\infty ^{\frac{a}{b}}$$. Moreover, they presented many conjectures on the congruences for $$p_{a/b}(n)$$. In this paper, we not only prove some conjectures of Chan and Wang, but also discover new congruences for $$p_{a/b}(n)$$ in light of Ramanujan’s modular equations of fifth, seventh and thirteenth orders.
