Abstract:A formalism has been developed for calculating the signal of violation of $T$ invariance, provided that $P$ invariance is preserved during the scattering of tensor-polarized deuterons on vector-polarized ones based on the Glauber theory with the full consideration of spin dependence of $NN$ elastic scattering amplitudes and spin structure of colliding deuterons. The numerical calculations have been carried out in the range of laboratory proton energies $T_p=0.1$--$1.2$ GeV using the SAID database for spin amplitudes and in the energy region of the SPD NICA experiment corresponding to the invariant mass of the interacting nucleon pairs $\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2.5$--$25$ GeV, using two phenomenological models of $pN$ elastic scattering. It is found that only one type of the $T$ non-invariant $P$-invariant $NN$ interaction gives a non-zero contribution to the signal in question, that is important for isolating an unknown constant of this interaction from the corresponding data.

Abstract:Time-delays in the photoionization of molecules are investigated. As compared to atomic ionization, the time-delays expected from molecular ionization present a much richer phenomenon, with a strong spatial dependence due to the anisotropic nature of the molecular scattering potential. We investigate this from a scattering theory perspective, and make use of molecular photoionization calculations to examine this effect in representative homonuclear and hetronuclear diatomic molecules, nitrogen and carbon monoxide. We present energy and angle-resolved maps of the Wigner delay time for single-photon valence ionization, and discuss the possibilities for experimental measurements.

Abstract:Measurements in classical and quantum physics are described in fundamentally different ways. Nevertheless, one can formally define similar measurement procedures with respect to the disturbance they cause. Obviously, strong measurements, both classical and quantum, are invasive—they disturb the measured system. We show that it is possible to define general weak measurements, which are noninvasive: the disturbance becomes negligible as the measurement strength goes to zero. Classical intuition suggests that noninvasive measurements should be time symmetric (if the system dynamics is reversible) and we confirm that correlations are time-reversal symmetric in the classical case. However, quantum weak measurements—defined analogously to their classical counterparts—can be noninvasive but not time symmetric. We present a simple example of measurements on a two-level system which violates time symmetry and propose an experiment with quantum dots to measure the time-symmetry violation in a third-order current correlation function.

Abstract:Quantum and classical mechanics are derived using four natural physical principles: (1) the laws of nature are invariant under time evolution, (2) the laws of nature are invariant under tensor composition, (3) the laws of nature are relational, and (4) positivity (the ability to define a physical state). Quantum mechanics is singled out by a fifth experimentally justified postulate: nature violates Bell's inequalities.

Abstract:Lorentz Invariance (LI) is the founding postulate of Einstein's 1905 theory of relativity, and therefore at the heart of all accepted theories of physics. It characterizes the invariance of the laws of physics in inertial frames under changes of velocity or orientation. This central role, and indications from unification theories hinting toward a possible LI violation, have motivated tremendous experimental efforts to test LI. A comprehensive theoretical framework to describe violations of LI has been developed over the last decade: the Lorentz violating Standard Model Extension (SME). It allows a characterization of LI violations in all fields of present day physics using a large (but finite) set of parameters which are all zero when LI is satisfied. All classical tests (e.g. Michelson-Morley or Kennedy-Thorndike experiments) can be analyzed in the SME, but it also allows the conception of new types of experiments, not thought of previously. We have carried out such a conceptually new LI test, by comparing particular atomic transitions (particular orientations of the involved nuclear spins) in the $^{133}$Cs atom using a cold atomic fountain clock. This allows us to test LI in a previously largely unexplored region of the SME parameter space, corresponding to first measurements of four proton parameters and an improvement by 11 and 12 orders of magnitude on the determination of four others. In spite of the attained accuracies, and of having extended the search into a new region of the SME, we still find no indication of LI violation.

Interference of photons from independent hot atoms

Abstract:We demonstrate the interference of photons scattered from independent ensembles of warm atoms in atomic vapor. It employs finite temporal coherence of light scattered elastically in the forward and backward directions from Doppler-broadened atomic ensembles, such that photons with chaotic photon statistics from two opposite atomic velocity groups contribute to the same detection mode. While the random phase fluctuations of the scattered light caused by a large thermal motion prevent direct observability of the interference in the detected photon rate, the stable frequency difference between photons collected from scattering off counter-propagating laser beams provides strong periodic modulation of the photon coincidence rate with the period given by the detuning of the excitation laser from the atomic resonance. Presented interferometry promises direct applications in Doppler-free atomic and molecular spectroscopy.

Experimental test for violation of duality on a photon beam

Abstract:We test for evidence violating the duality invariant ratio of photon beam irradiance and wave intensity. Split beams from a 633 nm HeNe laser are intersected at a diffraction grating complementary to the resultant interference pattern. An output beam from the grating, depleted in irradiance relative to wave intensity from the perspective of local realism, is transiently intersected with a beam from an independent HeNe laser and measured irradiance is amplified by ~4% in conflict with quantum mechanics.

Interaction-Free Effects Between Distant Atoms

Abstract:A Gedanken experiment is presented where an excited and a ground-state atom are positioned such that, within the former's half-life time, they exchange a photon with 50% probability. A measurement of their energy state will therefore indicate in 50% of the cases that no photon was exchanged. Yet other measurements would reveal that, by the mere possibility of exchange, the two atoms have become entangled. Consequently, the "no exchange" result, apparently precluding entanglement, is non-locally established between the atoms by this very entanglement. This quantum-mechanical version of the ancient Liar Paradox can be realized with already existing transmission schemes, with the addition of Bell's theorem applied to the no-exchange cases. Under appropriate probabilities, the initially-excited atom, still excited, can be entangled with additional atoms time and again, or alternatively, exert multipartite nonlocal correlations in an interaction free manner. When densely repeated several times, this result also gives rise to the Quantum Zeno effect, again exerted between distant atoms without photon exchange. We discuss these experiments as variants of interaction-free-measurement, now generalized for both spatial and temporal uncertainties. We next employ weak measurements for elucidating the paradox. Interpretational issues are discussed in the conclusion, and a resolution is offered within the Two-State Vector Formalism and its new Heisenberg framework.
Isotopic effects in molecular attosecond photoelectron interferometry

Abstract:Isotopic substitution in molecular systems can affect fundamental molecular properties including the energy position and spacing of electronic, vibrational and rotational levels, thus modifying the dynamics associated to their coherent superposition. In extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy, the photoelectron leaving the molecule after the absorption of a single photon can trigger an ultrafast nuclear motion in the cation, which can lead, eventually, to molecular fragmentation. This dynamics depends on the mass of the constituents of the cation, thus showing, in general, a significant isotopic dependence. In time-resolved attosecond photoelectron interferometry, the absorption of the extreme ultraviolet photon is accompanied by the exchange of an additional quantum of energy (typically in the infrared spectral range) with the photoelectron-photoion system, offering the opportunity to investigate in time the influence of isotopic substitution on the characteristics of the photoionisation dynamics. Here we show that attosecond photoelectron interferometry is sensitive to isotopic substitution by investigating the two-color photoionisation spectra measured in a mixture of methane (CH$_4$) and deuteromethane (CD$_4$). The isotopic dependence manifests itself in the modification of the amplitude and contrast of the oscillations of the photoelectron peaks generated in the two-color field with the two isotopologues. The observed effects are interpreted considering the differences in the time evolution of the nuclear autocorrelation functions in the two molecules.

Abstract:Abstract One of the cornerstones of quantum physics is the wave nature of matter. It explains experimentally observed effects like interference and diffraction, occurring when an object moves from one place to another along several indistinguishable ways simultaneously. The wave nature disappears when the individual ways are distinguishable. In this case, the particle nature of the object becomes visible. To determine the particle nature quantitatively, the way of the object has to be measured. Here, large progress has been made recently with new techniques, enabling one to investigate single moving atoms in a controlled manner. Two examples are discussed in the following two sections. The first experiment describes an atom interferometer, where the way of the atom is entangled with its internal state. This allows one to explore the origin of wave‐particle duality and perform a quantitative test of this fundamental principle. The second experiment reports on the observation of an atom‐photon molecule, a bound state between an atom and a single photon. A fascinating aspect of this system is that it makes possible to monitor the motion of a single neutral atom in real time.

Abstract:We review the results of two double-slit-like experiments in the infrared range, which evidence an anomalous behaviour of photon systems under particular (energy and space) constraints. These outcomes (independently confirmed by crossing photon beam experiments in both the optical and the microwave range) apparently rule out the Copenhagen interpretation of the quantum wave, i.e. the probability wave, by admitting an interpretation in terms of the Einstein-de Broglie-Bohm hollow wave for photons. Moreover, these experiments support the interpretation of the hollow wave as a deformation of the Minkowski space-time geometry. We stress the implications of these experimental results and of their interpretation for the concept of action-at-a-distance, the Einstein relativistic correlation and the Bohr principle of complementarity.

Abstract:Time directions are not invariant in conventional thermodynamics. We broadly follow ideas of Ludwig Boltzmann and investigate implications of postulating time-directional invariance in thermodynamics. In this investigation, we require that thermodynamic descriptions are not changed under time reversal accompanied by replacement of matter by antimatter (i.e. CPT-invariant thermodynamics). The matter and antimatter are defined as thermodynamic concepts without detailing their physical structure. Our analysis stays within the limits of conceptual thermodynamics and leads to effective negative temperatures, to thermodynamic restrictions on time travel and to inherent antagonism of matter and antimatter. This antagonism is purely thermodynamic; it explains the difficulty in achieving thermodynamic equilibrium between matter and antimatter and does not postulate their mutual annihilation on contact. We believe that the conclusions of this work can be of interest not only for people researching or teaching thermodynamics but also for a wider scientific audience.

Photon Transitions in Arbitrary Time-Varying Metamaterials

Abstract:We present a general theory for calculating photon transitions in arbitrarily time-varying metamaterials. This theory circumvents the difficulties of conventional approaches in solving such a general problem by exploiting the eigenstates of time-dependent number operators. We demonstrate here the temporal evolution of these operators and the related transition probabilities for the cases of logistic and linear permittivity profiles. The theory is potentially extensible to arbitrary space-time modulations and may hence lead to multiple novel quantum effects and applications.

Abstract:We report the first implementation of the von Neumann instantaneous measurements of nonlocal variables, which becomes possible due to technological achievements in creating hyperentangled photons. Tests of reliability and of the nondemolition property of the measurements have been performed with high precision, showing the suitability of the scheme as a basic ingredient of numerous quantum information protocols. The method allows us to demonstrate for the first time with strong measurements a special feature of pre- and postselected quantum systems: the failure of the product rule. It has been verified experimentally that for a particular pre- and postselected pair of particles, a single measurement on particle A yields with certainty σ_{x}^{A}=-1, a single measurement on particle B yields with certainty σ_{y}^{B}=-1, and a single nonlocal measurement on particles A and B yields with certainty σ_{x}^{A}σ_{y}^{B}=-1.

Abstract:Envariance, or environment-assisted invariance, is a recently identified symmetry for maximally entangled states in quantum theory with important ramifications for quantum measurement, specifically for understanding Born's rule. We benchmark the degree to which nature respects this symmetry by using entangled photon pairs. Our results show quantum states can be (99.66 +/- 0.04)% envariant as measured using the quantum fidelity, and (99.963 +/- 0.005)% asmeasured using a modifiedBhattacharya coefficient, as comparedwith a perfectly envariant system which would be 100% in either measure. The deviations can be understood by the less-than-maximal entanglement in our photon pairs.

Abstract:Fifty years ago, Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) discovered photon bunching in light emitted by a chaotic source, highlighting the importance of two-photon correlations and stimulating the development of modern quantum optics . The quantum interpretation of bunching relies upon the constructive interference between amplitudes involving two indistinguishable photons, and its additive character is intimately linked to the Bose nature of photons. Advances in atom cooling and detection have led to the observation and full characterisation of the atomic analogue of the HBT effect with bosonic atoms. By contrast, fermions should reveal an antibunching effect, i.e., a tendency to avoid each other. Antibunching of fermions is associated with destructive two-particle interference and is related to the Pauli principle forbidding more than one identical fermion to occupy the same quantum state. Here we report an experimental comparison of the fermion and the boson HBT effects realised in the same apparatus with two different isotopes of helium, 3He (a fermion) and 4He (a boson). Ordinary attractive or repulsive interactions between atoms are negligible, and the contrasting bunching and antibunching behaviours can be fully attributed to the different quantum statistics. Our result shows how atom-atom correlation measurements can be used not only for revealing details in the spatial density, or momentum correlations in an atomic ensemble, but also to directly observe phase effects linked to the quantum statistics in a many body system. It may thus find applications to study more exotic situations >.

Bell test of quantum entanglement in attosecond photoionization

Abstract:Attosecond physics enables the study of ultrafast coherent electron dynamics in matter upon photoexcitation and photoionization, revealing spectacular effects such as hole migration and coherent Auger dynamics in molecules. In the photoionization scenario, there has been a strong focus on probing the physical manifestations of the internal quantum coherence within the individual parent ion and photoelectron systems. However, quantum correlations between these two subsystems emerging from the attosecond photoionization event have thus far remained much more elusive. In this work, we design theoretically and model numerically a direct probe of quantum entanglement in attosecond photoionization in the form of a Bell test. We simulate from first principles a Bell test protocol for the case of noble gas atoms photoionized by ultrashort, circularly polarized infrared laser pulses in the strong-field regime predicting robust violation of the Bell inequality. This theoretical result paves the way to the direct observation of entanglement in the context of ultrafast photoionization of many-electron systems. Our work provides a different perspective on attosecond physics directed towards the detection of quantum correlations between systems born during attosecond photoionization and unravelling the signatures of entanglement in the ultrafast coherent molecular dynamics, including in the chemical decomposition pathways of molecular ions.
