Abstract:Isotopic substitution in molecular systems can affect fundamental molecular properties including the energy position and spacing of electronic, vibrational and rotational levels, thus modifying the dynamics associated to their coherent superposition. In extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy, the photoelectron leaving the molecule after the absorption of a single photon can trigger an ultrafast nuclear motion in the cation, which can lead, eventually, to molecular fragmentation. This dynamics depends on the mass of the constituents of the cation, thus showing, in general, a significant isotopic dependence. In time-resolved attosecond photoelectron interferometry, the absorption of the extreme ultraviolet photon is accompanied by the exchange of an additional quantum of energy (typically in the infrared spectral range) with the photoelectron-photoion system, offering the opportunity to investigate in time the influence of isotopic substitution on the characteristics of the photoionisation dynamics. Here we show that attosecond photoelectron interferometry is sensitive to isotopic substitution by investigating the two-color photoionisation spectra measured in a mixture of methane (CH$_4$) and deuteromethane (CD$_4$). The isotopic dependence manifests itself in the modification of the amplitude and contrast of the oscillations of the photoelectron peaks generated in the two-color field with the two isotopologues. The observed effects are interpreted considering the differences in the time evolution of the nuclear autocorrelation functions in the two molecules.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the influence of isotope substitution on the photoelectron dynamic characteristics in molecular attosecond photoelectron interferometry. Specifically, the research team analyzed the photoelectron spectra of methane (CH₄) and deuterated methane (CD₄) during the two - color photoionization process through experiments and theoretical simulations, especially the oscillation characteristics of these spectra at different delay times. The study found that isotope substitution led to changes in the photoelectron peak amplitude and contrast, and these changes could be attributed to the differences in the time evolution of the molecular nuclear autocorrelation function. ### Research Background and Problems 1. **Importance of Isotope Effects** - Isotope substitution can affect the basic properties of molecules, such as the position of electronic energy levels, the spacing between vibrational and rotational energy levels, etc., thus changing the dynamics related to the coherent superposition of these energy levels. - In extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy, the photoelectron generated after a single photon is absorbed can trigger ultrafast nuclear motion in the cation, which may eventually lead to the dissociation of the molecule. This dynamics depends on the mass of the constituent elements of the cation, so it usually shows significant isotope dependence. 2. **Attosecond Photoelectron Interferometry** - The attosecond photoelectron interferometry technique can explore the influence of isotope substitution on the photoionization dynamic characteristics in time by combining extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses and synchronous infrared (IR) fields. - This technique can observe the changes in the photoelectron peak amplitude and contrast caused by isotope substitution, and these changes reflect the differences in the time evolution of nuclear wave packets in different isotope molecules. ### Experimental Methods - **Experimental Setup** - A reaction microscope (ReMi) was used for photoelectron - photoion coincidence measurements to distinguish the photoelectron spectra of methane and deuterated methane. - Attosecond pulse trains and synchronous infrared fields were used in the experiment to generate photoelectron peaks through the two - color photoionization process. - **Data Processing** - The oscillation characteristics of photoelectron peaks at different delay times were analyzed, and the oscillation amplitude offset \(A_0\omega\), oscillation amplitude \(A_2\omega\) and phase offset \(\phi\) were extracted. - The photoelectron spectra of methane and deuterated methane in different ion channels (such as CH₄⁺, CH₃⁺, CD₄⁺, CD₃⁺) were compared. ### Main Findings 1. **Width and Contrast of Photoelectron Peaks** - The experimental data show that the width of the photoelectron peak of methane is greater than that of deuterated methane, indicating that isotope substitution leads to the broadening of the photoelectron peak. - The photoelectron peak amplitude offset \(A_0\omega\) of methane is larger, while the oscillation amplitude \(A_2\omega\) is smaller, resulting in its lower contrast \(C = A_2\omega/A_0\omega\). In contrast, the contrast of deuterated methane is higher. 2. **Theoretical Explanation** - The influence of isotope substitution on the width and contrast of photoelectron peaks was explained by calculating the nuclear autocorrelation function and its Fourier transform. - The nuclear autocorrelation function of methane decays faster, resulting in its Fourier transform being wider in the energy domain, thus causing the broadening of the photoelectron peak and the reduction of contrast. ### Conclusion This study, through experiments and theoretical simulations, revealed the influence of isotope substitution on the photoelectron dynamic characteristics in molecular attosecond photoelectron interferometry. These findings not only help to understand the ultrafast dynamic processes inside molecules but also provide an important reference for the development of attosecond metrology.
