Abstract:IMPORTANCE Appropriate infant feeding practices have the potential for long-term health effects. However, research findings on improving early infant feeding practices are limited. The wide use of mobile phone short message service (SMS) provides new opportunities for health promotion and services. OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of an SMS intervention on infant feeding practices. DESIGN AND SETTING Quasiexperimental design with follow-up measures scheduled at 4, 6, and 12 months at 4 community health centers in Shanghai, China. Two community health centers represented the intervention group, and 2 other community health centers represented the control group. PARTICIPANTS In total, 582 expectant mothers were recruited during the first trimester. Expectant mothers were eligible to participate if they owned a mobile phone, were first-time mothers, conceived a singleton fetus, were older than 20 years and less than 13 weeks' gestation, had completed at least a compulsory junior high school education, and had no illness that limited breastfeeding after childbirth. INTERVENTION Mothers in the intervention group received weekly SMS messages about infant feeding from the third trimester to 12 months' post partum. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was the duration of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Survival analysis was used to compare the duration of EBF between the intervention group and the control group. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the intervention group had a significantly longer median duration of EBF at 6 months (11.41 [95% CI, 10.25-12.57] vs 8.87 [95% CI, 7.84-9.89] weeks). The hazard ratio for stopping EBF in the intervention group was 0.80 (95% CI, 0.66-0.97). The intervention resulted in a significantly higher rate of EBF at 6 months (adjusted odds ratio, 2.67 [95% CI, 1.45-4.91]) and a significantly lower rate of the introduction of solid foods before 4 months (adjusted odds ratio, 0.27 [95% CI, 0.08-0.94]). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE An SMS intervention may be effective in promoting EBF, delaying the introduction of solid foods, increasing awareness of the World Health Organization breastfeeding guidelines, and improving knowledge of appropriate infant feeding practices for new mothers.

Abstract:BackgroundInfant feeding practices can have long-term health effects for children. Short message service (SMS) through mobile telephones has been increasingly used for health promotion and health services. Participants were followed up at 4, 6, and 12 months post-partum. The primary outcome was duration of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). We compared the duration of EBF between groups by survival analysis.FindingsWe enrolled 582 participants (281 in the intervention group and 301 in the control group). At 6 months after birth, 265 mothers in the intervention and 284 in the control groups were followed up. Participants in the intervention group had a significantly longer median duration of EBF at 6 months compared with those in the control group (11·4 weeks, 95% CI 10·3–12·6 vs 8·9 weeks, 95% CI 7·8–9·9; p<0·0002).InterpretationAn SMS intervention might help to promote EBF for new mothers. The Effects on Inappropriate Weight for Gestational Age of an SMS Based Educational Intervention for Pregnant Women in Xi'an China: A Quasi-Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of maternal text messages on inappropriate weight for gestational age (IWGA) in newborns in rural China. Methods: Participants were pregnant women presenting for antenatal care at a Maternal and Child Health Center in Xi'an, China during the 2013-2015 period. In total, 2115 women completed the program with follow-up information included in the final analyses. All mothers were divided into four groups, including (1) a control group that received only a few "Basic" messages, (2) a Care-Seeking (CS) message group, (3) Good Household Prenatal Practices (GHPP) message group, and (4) a group receiving all 148 text messages. The primary outcome was IWGA, including small for gestational age (SGA) and macrosomia (weighing >= 4000g at birth). Multivariable logistic regression using an intent-to-treat estimate was utilized. Results: In total, 19.5% of newborns were IWGA. The risk of IWGA was 23.0% in the control group, 19.6% in the CS group, 18.9% in the GHPP group, and 16.5% in the group with All Texts. Compared to the control group, the odds ratio of IWGA was 0.65 (0.48-0.89) for the group receiving All Texts, which remained statistically significant after performing the Holm-Bonferroni correction. The odds ratio of macrosomia was 0.54 (0.34-0.87) and 0.57 (0.36-0.49) for the Care Seeking message group and the All Texts group, respectively, with statistical significance. Conclusion: A package of free informational text messages, including advice for good household prenatal practices and care seeking, may prevent the inappropriate weight for gestational age through a protective effect on macrosomia. Advice to encourage care seeking in pregnancy may prevent macrosomia among neonates in rural China as well.

Abstract:Background and aim: Short message services (SMS) via mobile phone is the most widely adopted and inexpensive way for modern communication. It has being used in health promotion and disease prevention. Appropriate infant feeding practices have long-term health effects, including obesity prevention. However, published findings on improving early infant feeding to prevent childhood obesity are limited. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of an SMS intervention on child BMI at 12 and 24 months. Method: A quasi-randomized experimental design was used. 582 expectant mothers (281 intervention; 301 control) were recruited in the 1st trimester in four Community Health Centers (CHCs), in Shanghai, China. Mothers in intervention group received SMS messages from the 3rd trimester to 12 months postpartum. Offspring length and weight at 12 and 24 months were drawn from CHC health records. The association between the SMS intervention and BMI at 12 and 24 months was assessed by multivariate liner regression. Results: The intervention group had a significantly higher median duration of exclusively breastfeeding (EBF) at 30 weeks than the control group (11.4 weeks [95% CI, 10.3—12.6] vs 8.9 weeks [95% CI, 7.8—9.9]); P < 0.001). The average BMI at 12 months was 17.08 and 17.16 kg/m2 for the intervention and control groups, respectively, and 15.94 and 15.88 kg/m2 at 24 months, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in BMI after controlling for maternal age, maternal education, household registration, housing arrangement, family income, baby’s gender, pre-pregnancy maternal BMI, father’s BMI, baseline awareness of WHO breastfeeding guidelines and childhood obesity. Conclusion: A mobile phone SMS intervention could be effective in promoting EBF, but may not influence BMI at 12 and 24 months.

Abstract:Introduction: Expectant mothers in low-income and middle-income countries often lack access to vital information about pregnancy, preparation for birth and best practices when caring for their newborn. Innovative solutions are needed to bridge this knowledge gap and dramatically improve maternal and neonatal health in these settings. This study aims to evaluate the impact of an innovative text messaging intervention on maternal and neonatal health outcomes.Methods and analysis: This study offers expectant mothers in rural China a package of free short messages via cell phone regarding pregnancy and childbirth. These messages are tailored to each mother's gestational week. It is hypothesised that delivering these short advice messages to pregnant women can improve maternal and newborn health. The study uses factorial quasi-randomisation to compare psychological, behavioural and health outcomes between 4 groups: 2 groups receiving different sets of short message interventions (ie, good household prenatal practices and healthcare seeking), a group receiving both interventions and a control group. Treatment assignment occurs at the individual level. The primary outcome is newborn health, measured by appropriateness of weight for gestational age. Secondary outcomes include severe neonatal and maternal morbidity as well as psychological and behavioural measures. This study has enrolled pregnant women who attend county maternal and child health centres for their prenatal visits.Discussion: This pilot is the first large-scale effort to build a comprehensive evidence base on the impact of prenatal text messages via cell phone on maternal and newborn health outcomes in China. The study has broad implications for public health policy in China and the implementation of mobile health interventions in low-resource settings around the world.Ethics: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the School of Medicine at Xi'an Jiaotong University on 18 January 2013.
Impact of Text Message Reminders on Caregivers' Adherence to a Home Fortification Program Against Child Anemia in Rural Western China: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES To test whether text message reminders sent to caregivers improve the effectiveness of a home micronutrient fortification program in western China. METHODS We carried out a cluster-randomized controlled trial in 351 villages (clusters) in Shaanxi Province in 2013 and 2014, enrolling children aged 6 to 12 months. We randomly assigned each village to 1 of 3 groups: free delivery group, text messaging group, or control group. We collected information on compliance with treatments and hemoglobin concentrations from all children at baseline and 6-month follow-up. We estimated the intent-to-treat effects on compliance and child anemia using a logistic regression model. RESULTS There were 1393 eligible children. We found that assignment to the text messaging group led to an increase in full compliance (marginal effect = 0.10; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.03, 0.16) compared with the free delivery group and decrease in the rate of anemia at end line relative to the control group (marginal effect = -0.07; 95% CI = -0.12, -0.01), but not relative to the free delivery group (marginal effect = -0.03; 95% CI = -0.09, 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Text messages improved compliance of caregivers to a home fortification program and children's nutrition.

Conclusions: The SMS intervention did not show a significant effect on children's BMI, BMI z-score, or weight-for-length z-score at 12 and 24 months. Introduction of solid foods before 4 months and taking a bottle to bed at 12 months were significantly and positively correlated with a higher BMI, BMI z-score, and weight-for-length z-score at 24 months. Abstract:Background: Although mobile health (mHealth) has been widely applied in health care services, few studies have reported the detailed process of the development and implementation of text messaging (short message service, SMS) interventions. Objective: Our study aims to demonstrate the process and lessons learned from a community-based text messaging (SMS) intervention for improving infant feeding in Shanghai, China. Methods: The intervention included planning and development, implementation, and process evaluation. A 3-phase process was adopted during planning and development: (1) a formative study with expectant and new mothers to explore the barriers of appropriate infant feeding practices; (2) a baseline questionnaire survey to understand potential intervention approaches; and (3) development of the text message bank. The text messaging intervention was delivered via a computer-based platform. A message bank was established before the start of the intervention containing information on the benefits of breastfeeding, preparing for breastfeeding, early initiation of breastfeeding, timely introduction of complementary foods, and establishing appropriate feeding practices, etc. An expert advisory committee oversaw the content and quality of the message bank. Process evaluation was conducted through field records and qualitative interviews with participating mothers. Results: We found that the text messaging intervention was feasible and well received by mothers because of its easy and flexible access. The weekly based message frequency was thought to be appropriate, and the contents were anticipatory and trustworthy. Some mothers had high expectations for timely response to inquiries. Occasionally, the text messages were not delivered due to unstable telecommunication transmission. Mothers suggested that the messages could be more personalized. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the feasibility and value of text messaging intervention in filling gaps in delivering health care services and promoting healthy infant feeding practices in settings where personal contact is limited.
Effect of a Text Messaging–Based Educational Intervention on Cesarean Section Rates among Pregnant Women in China: Quasirandomized Controlled Trial (Preprint)

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Consensus exists that appropriate regional cesarean rates should not exceed 15% of births, but China's cesarean rate exceeds 50% in some areas, prompting numerous calls for its reduction. At present, China's 2016 two-child policy has heightened the implications of national cesarean section trends.OBJECTIVE:This study leveraged pervasive cellular phone access amongst Chinese citizens to test the effect of a low-cost and scalable prenatal advice program on cesarean section rates.METHODS:Participants were pregnant women presenting for antenatal care at a clinic in Xi'an, China. Assignment was quasirandomized and utilized factorial assignment based on the expecting mother's birthday. Participants were assigned to one of the following four groups, with each receiving a different set of messages: (1) a comparison group that received only a few "basic" messages, (2) a group receiving messages primarily regarding care seeking, (3) a group receiving messages primarily regarding good home prenatal practices, and (4) a group receiving text messages of all groups. Messages were delivered throughout pregnancy and were tailored to each woman's gestational week. The main outcome was the rates of cesarean delivery reported in the intervention arms. Data analysts were blinded to treatment assignment.RESULTS:In total, 2115 women completed the trial and corresponding follow-up surveys. In the unadjusted analysis, the group receiving all texts was associated with an odds ratio of 0.77 (P=.06), though neither the care seeking nor good home prenatal practice set yielded a relevant impact. Adjusting for potentially confounding covariates showed that the group with all texts sent together was associated with an odds ratio of 0.67 (P=.01). Notably, previous cesarean section evoked an odds ratio of 11.78 (P<.001), highlighting that having a cesarean section predicts future cesarean section in a subsequent pregnancy.CONCLUSIONS:Sending pregnant women in rural China short informational messages with integrated advice regarding both care-seeking and good home prenatal practices appears to reduce women's likelihood of undergoing cesarean section. Reducing clear medical indications for cesarean section seems to be the strongest potential pathway of the effect. Cesarean section based on only maternal request did not seem to occur regularly in our study population. Text messaging interventions for breastfeeding outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Given the health benefits of breastfeeding for infants and mothers, breastfeeding has become a significant public health issue. The global growth of mobile phone usage has created new options for breastfeeding promotion, including text messaging. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of text messaging interventions on breastfeeding outcomes and to identify the efficacy moderators of such interventions. Methods: Ten electronic databases were searched from the inception of the databases to 5 July 2023. Studies were included if they used randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental designs to evaluate the effect of text messaging interventions on breastfeeding outcomes. Two reviewers screened the included studies, assessed the risk of bias, and extracted the data. Pooled results were obtained by the random-effects model, and subgroup analyses were conducted on intervention characteristics to identify potential moderators. The protocol of this study was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022371311). Results: Sixteen studies were included. Text messaging interventions could improve the exclusive breastfeeding rate (at <3 months: OR = 2.04; 95 % CI: 1.60-2.60, P < 0.001; at 3-6 months: OR = 1.66; 95 % CI: 1.18-2.33, P = 0.004; at ≥6 months: OR = 2.13; 95 % CI: 1.47-3.08, P < 0.001), and the breastfeeding self-efficacy (SMD = 0.30, 95 % CI: 0.14-0.45, P < 0.001). Text messaging interventions that covered antenatal and postnatal periods, delivered weekly were most effective in improving the exclusive breastfeeding rate. Conclusions: Text messaging interventions may improve breastfeeding practice compared with no or general health information. We suggest text messaging conducted from the pre- to postnatal periods in a weekly manner can effectively increase exclusive breastfeeding rates and breastfeeding self-efficacy. Further studies should investigate the relation between new theories (such as the health action process approach and the theory of message-framing) and efficacy of breastfeeding interventions, using text components.
The Effects on Inappropriate Weight for Gestational Age of an SMS Based Educational Intervention for Pregnant Women in Xi’an China: A Quasi-Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of maternal text messages on inappropriate weight for gestational age (IWGA) in newborns in rural China. Methods: Participants were pregnant women presenting for antenatal care at a Maternal and Child Health Center in Xi’an, China during the 2013–2015 period. In total, 2115 women completed the program with follow-up information included in the final analyses. All mothers were divided into four groups, including (1) a control group that received only a few “Basic” messages, (2) a Care-Seeking (CS) message group, (3) Good Household Prenatal Practices (GHPP) message group, and (4) a group receiving all 148 text messages. The primary outcome was IWGA, including small for gestational age (SGA) and macrosomia (weighing ≥4000g at birth). Multivariable logistic regression using an intent-to-treat estimate was utilized. Results: In total, 19.5% of newborns were IWGA. The risk of IWGA was 23.0% in the control group, 19.6% in the CS group, 18.9% in the GHPP group, and 16.5% in the group with All Texts. Compared to the control group, the odds ratio of IWGA was 0.65 (0.48–0.89) for the group receiving All Texts, which remained statistically significant after performing the Holm-Bonferroni correction. The odds ratio of macrosomia was 0.54 (0.34–0.87) and 0.57 (0.36–0.49) for the Care Seeking message group and the All Texts group, respectively, with statistical significance. Conclusion: A package of free informational text messages, including advice for good household prenatal practices and care seeking, may prevent the inappropriate weight for gestational age through a protective effect on macrosomia. Advice to encourage care seeking in pregnancy may prevent macrosomia among neonates in rural China as well.

Tailored text messages to improve breastfeeding practices in Yangon, Myanmar: the M528 individually randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background: Text messages are a feasible delivery channel for breastfeeding promotion, but only a few articles have examined their effectiveness. Objective: To evaluate the impact of mobile phone text messages on breastfeeding practices. Design: We implemented a 2-arm, parallel, individually randomized controlled trial with 353 pregnant participants at the Central Women's Hospital, Yangon. The intervention group (n = 179) received breastfeeding-promotion text messages, and the control group (n = 174) received other maternal and child health care messages. The primary outcome was the exclusive breastfeeding rate at 1-6 mo postpartum. Secondary outcomes were other breastfeeding indicators, breastfeeding self-efficacy, and child morbidity. Using the intention-to-treat approach, the available outcome data were analyzed with generalized estimation equation Poisson regression models to estimate RR and 95% CIs, adjusted for within-person correlation and time, and tested for treatment group-by-time interactions. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding prevalence was significantly higher in the intervention than in the control group for the 6 follow-up visits combined (RR: 1.48; 95%CI: 1.35, 1.63; P < 0.001) and at each monthly follow-up visit. At 6 mo, exclusive breastfeeding was 43.4% in the intervention compared with 15.3% in the control group (RR: 2.74; 95%CI: 1.79, 4.19; P < 0.001). Also, at 6 mo, the intervention increased current breastfeeding (RR: 1.17; 95%CI: 1.07, 1.26; P < 0.001) and reduced bottle feeding (RR: 0.30; 95%CI: 0.17, 0.54; P < 0.001). Exclusive breastfeeding was progressively higher in the intervention group than in the control group at each follow-up (P for interaction < 0.001) and similarly for current breastfeeding. The intervention increased the mean breastfeeding self-efficacy score (adjusted mean difference 4.0; 95%CI: 1.36, 6.64; P = 0.030). Over the 6-month follow-up, the intervention significantly reduced diarrhea risk by 55% (RR: 0.45; 95%CI: 0.24, 0.82; P < 0.009). Conclusions: Regular, targeted text messages delivered to urban pregnant women and mothers via mobile phones significantly improve breastfeeding practices and reduce infant morbidity during the first 6 mo of life. Using Daily Text Messages To Improve Adherence To Infant Micronutrient Powder (Mnp) Packets In Rural Western China: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:ObjectiveTo evaluate the effectiveness of daily text messages as a means to improve caregivers' adherence to infant micronutrient powder (MNP) in rural Shaanxi Province of China.Methodology638 infants aged 6 +/- 11 months in 234 villages were involved in a cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT). All caregivers were given free infant MNP packets at baseline in April 2013 and the follow-up survey was in July 2013. We randomly assigned 318 infants in 117 villages to treatment group (receiving daily text message) and 320 infants in the other 117 villages as control group.ResultsOn average, daily text messages increased the number of MNP packets fed (marginal effect = 4.63; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.16, 9.10). The text message is more likely to increase the consumption of MNP packets if the primary caregiver was the mother (marginal effect = 12.19; 95% CI = 0.69, 23.68). Receiving the text message appears to significantly increase the likelihood of full adherence when the primary caregiver can either check (odds ratio = 2.93; 95% CI = 1.34, 6.40) or knows how to send (odds ratio = 3.26; 95% CI = 1.53, 6.97) text messages.ConclusionDaily text messages improved the consumption of infant MNP packets. However, the impact was not large enough to increase the probability of caregivers being fully adherent to the feeding instruction, which is to feed 5 +/- 7 packets per week as recommended. In addition, when the mother is the caregiver and when the caregiver can check or knows how to send text messages there is greater adherence by the primary caregivers.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to test whether adding a text message campaign about the importance of eating eggs and other nutrition‐related behaviours to an on‐going package of large‐scale, diverse social and behaviour change interventions would improve four types of nutrition‐related knowledge and behaviour outcomes: child diets (egg consumption as the primary outcome), maternal diets, maternal nutrition knowledge, and maternal participation in additional interventions. The cluster‐randomized controlled trial involved a repeat cross‐sectional design, recruiting families with children 12–23 months of age at baseline and endline in one plains district of Nepal. Throughout the 1000‐day period, 51 text messages were sent to each household at specific time points to reinforce ideal diets and other nutrition‐related practices and promote engagement with community health workers and other intervention platforms. The primary outcome was egg consumption and dietary diversity among young children. We found no population‐level effect. Some evidence supports that for those who received and opened the SMS intervention, it improved child egg consumption (odds ratio [OR]: 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–1.93), child minimum dietary diversity (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.07–1.73), child dietary diversity scores (β: 0.15, 95% CI: 0.01–0.24), as well as maternal IYCF knowledge (β: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.08–0.35), participation in health mothers' group meetings (OR: 3.03, 95% CI: 1.91–4.84) and Bhanchhin Aama listenership (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.07–1.73). This study highlights the importance of more research to understand the effectiveness of emerging digital interventions for behaviour change among specific populations, to facilitate nuanced targeting to those who can best benefit from these investments. Effect of nutritional intervention in child health care on improving growth and development and disease prevention of infants

Abstract:Objective: To explore the outcome of nutritional intervention in child health care on infant growth and disease prevention. Methods: It was a retrospective study. Ninty-two infants who received child health intervention in The Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from September 2020 to June 2022 were selected as the research objects. According to the random number table method, they were divided into control group (46 cases, routine health intervention) and observation group (46 cases, nutritional intervention based on the control group) using the sealed envelope system. The growth and development, nutritional diseases and guardian satisfaction of the two groups were compared. Results: The scores of the observation group were higher than those of the control group in gross motor, fine motor, language and individual-social aspects. The total incidence of nutritional diseases in the observation group (2.17%) was lower than that in the control group (17.39%); In terms of total satisfaction rate, the observation group (100.00%) was higher than the control group (86.96%), with a statistical difference (P<0.05). Conclusion: Applying nutrition intervention to child health care plays an important role in maintaining the healthy growth and development of infants and reducing the incidence of nutritional diseases such as anemia and rickets. It needs to be promoted in clinical practice.
Text Messages to Curb Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption among Pregnant Women and Mothers: A Mobile Health Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in childhood obesity in the United States (U.S.) originate in early life. Maternal sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is an early life risk factor for later offspring obesity. The goal of this study was to test the effects of policy-relevant messages delivered by text messages mobile devices (mHealth) on maternal SSB consumption. In this three-arm 1-month randomized controlled trial (RCT), pregnant women or mothers of infants in predominantly Hispanic/Latino New York City neighborhoods were randomized to receive one of three text message sets: graphic beverage health warning labels, beverage sugar content information, or attention control. The main outcome was change in maternal self-reporting of average daily SSB consumption from baseline to one month. Among 262 participants, maternal SSB consumption declined over the 1-month period in all three arms. No intervention effect was detected in primary analyses. In sensitivity analyses accounting for outliers, graphic health warning labels reduced maternal SSB consumption by 28 kcal daily (95% CI: -56, -1). In this mHealth RCT among pregnant women and mothers of infants, graphic health warning labels and beverage sugar content information did not reduce maternal SSB consumption.
Effects of complementary food supplements on incidence of anemia among infants and young children in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of complementary food supplements to treat anemia and improve hemoglobin. METHODS All children(n = 292) aged 4 to 30 months from three cities in Zhejiang Province, were screened for the trial; 146 were treated with nothing, and another 146 were randomized into the group which received with a multiple micronutrient supplement. Hemoglobin(Hb), weight and height were measured at baseline and after 3 months of treatment,they were assessed again. RESULTS The treatments significantly increased Hb( g / dL). After the intervention, the prevalence of anemia was reduced to a greater extent in the intervention group than in the control group(P﹤0.05). There were no significant differences in changes about weight and height between treatment group and control group. CONCLUSION The supplements MMS increase Hb more than the control group; the supplement that contained micronutrients(MMS) is more effective for reducing the prevalence of anemia.

Abstract:Introduction: Inadequate caregiving conditions interfere with successful health and development outcomes. Access to appropriate information can result in improved health and development outcomes in children. Health promotion text messaging, a primary mHealth strategy, has been implemented in various countries to reach communities where the majority of the population may be living in poverty and lacks access to information and health services. This systematic review investigated what effect the provision of information regarding health and development in young children, using text messages, has on caregiver behaviour and child outcomes. Method: The review was conducted according to the PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis Protocols) guidelines. Studies were retrieved from Scopus, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection and Cochrane library using primary search phrases. The search was not limited to a specific period. Thematic analysis was used to organise and synthesise the information extracted from selected studies into main and sub-themes. Results: In total, 19 studies were identified, including randomised controlled trials (RCTs) ( n = 13, 68.42%), observational studies ( n = 3, 15.79%) and non-RCTs ( n = 3, 15.79%). Message content included educational information regarding health and development (89.47%), reminders (36.84%) and caregiver support (52.63%). The majority of studies ( n = 17; 89.47%) found statistically significant positive effects of text message intervention on caregiver behaviour. Text messages also affected child outcomes, with 15.79% ( n = 3) of studies reporting a positive effect. Conclusion: Text messaging is an effective tool to influence caregiver behaviour and child outcomes in health. There is however limited evidence regarding text message intervention effectiveness on child development, both in quality and in quantity. More research, especially in low- and middle-income countries, is necessary.
