Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of complementary food supplements to treat anemia and improve hemoglobin. METHODS All children(n = 292) aged 4 to 30 months from three cities in Zhejiang Province, were screened for the trial; 146 were treated with nothing, and another 146 were randomized into the group which received with a multiple micronutrient supplement. Hemoglobin(Hb), weight and height were measured at baseline and after 3 months of treatment, they were assessed again. RESULTS The treatments significantly increased Hb( g / dL). After the intervention, the prevalence of anemia was reduced to a greater extent in the intervention group than in the control group(P﹤0.05). There were no significant differences in changes about weight and height between treatment group and control group. CONCLUSION The supplements MMS increase Hb more than the control group; the supplement that contained micronutrients(MMS) is more effective for reducing the prevalence of anemia.
