Abstract:The synthesis of a polyethylene (PE) gel containing self-incarcerated palladium(0) nanoparticles is described. The PE gel matrix without any special functionality was synthesized by one-pot chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate facilitated by a Pd-diimine complex (1). The Pd(II) species from 1 were immobilized in situ onto the gel matrix and further reduced to Pd(0) nanoparticles as a result of catalyst 1 deactivation during polymerization and methanol (a reducer) washing in the polymer purification process. The resulting Pd-containing PE gel (2) is shown to be a high-performance and facilely reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions of iodobenzene or aryl bromides. An average TOF of 460 h(-1) was achieved with an average 0.57 ppm Pd leaching in each cycle of the Heck reaction of iodobenzene when the PE gel 2 was recycled 10 times. A maximum TOF of 3.33 x 104 h-(1) was reached and less than 0.64 ppm of Pd was leached in the Suzuki reactions of aryl bromides with water as solvent.

Abstract:Fe3O4 and Pd nanoparticles were assembled on sulfonated graphene (s-G) by an easy chemical approach and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The resulting material could be dispersed homogeneously in water or water/ethanol and further used as an excellent semi-heterogeneous catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction in an environmentally friendly solvent under ligand-free ambient conditions. The high heterogeneous catalytic activity appears to be due to the small size of Pd nanoparticles and homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles on the Fe3O4/s-G matrix. In addition, the catalytic activity did not deteriorate even after repeated applications, which may be due to the easy and efficient magnetic separation of the catalyst and the high dispersion and stability of the catalyst in an aqueous solution.

Abstract:A new magnetic nanoparticles-supported palladium(II) nanomagnetic catalyst (Pd-AcAc-Am-Fe3O4@SiO2) was synthesized and characterized using attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The nanomagnetic catalyst was used as convenient and efficient catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of various aryl bromides/chlorides/iodides with phenylboronic acid. The effects of varying solvents, base, temperature, reaction time and catalyst amount on the performance of the Suzuki– Miyaura cross-coupling reaction were investigated. The notable advantages of this heterogeneous nanomagnetic catalyst are excellent yields, mild reaction conditions, short reaction times and easy magnetic work-up and recyclability. Moreover, the new nanomagnetic catalyst could be easily recovered with an external magnet and could be reused at least six times without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:In this work, a highly efficient palladium catalyst was facilely immobilized on the surfaces of magnetic nanoparticles with the coordination of N-heterocyclic carbene. The prepared Pd-NHC@NCPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. With suitably designed emulsion polymerization and immobilization, the final palladium loading could reach 0.78 mmol/g. The catalyst showed outstanding catalytic performance in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction among various substrates, with little catalyst usage (0.03 mol.%), short reaction time, and mild reaction conditions. In addition, the catalyst could be separated conveniently from the reacting system with an external magnet and show good catalytic performance even after being reused five times or more, indicating good recyclability. Abstract:Nanoparticles of Fe 3 O 4 were prepared and decorated on the carbon nanotube surface, followed by palladium immobilization on the nanoparticles. The high efficiency MWCNT@Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CPTMO@DEA/Pd nanocatalyst was successfully obtained. Identification and determination of modified MWCNT organic functional groups were determined using infrared spectroscopy. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) shows the successful arrangement of different layers on the surface of the primary magnetic nanotubes. The thermal stability of MWCNT@Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CPTMO@DEA/Pd was investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The degree of crystallization of the modified magnetic iron oxide nanocatalysts was measured by the X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) was measured. Surface area, average pore size and total pore volume of the designed catalyst were investigated using Brimmer–Emanett–Teller (BET). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to analyse the morphology of the catalyst structure. The designed catalyst components were analysed using the spectroscopic method of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Consequently, the catalyst was employed for the Suzuki coupling reaction in the water–ethanol mixture as a green solvent. The new catalyst benefits a simple, eco-friendly, and highly magnetic preparation method. The catalyst showed high thermal stability and good reusability. The catalyst was magnetically recovered and reused for 7 successive cycles with no significant loss of activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized with carbon dots (C‐dots) that contain carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups were synthesized successfully and used for the reduction of Pd II and the formation of Pd NPs. The new material was characterized by SEM, TEM, energy‐dispersive spectroscopy, solid UV spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, XRD, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and was used as a very efficient catalyst in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction of aryl bromides and chlorides with arylboronic acids in aqueous media. Design of experiments indicates that the use of 0.22 mol % of Pd, K 2 CO 3 as the base, and aqueous ethanol are the best reaction conditions. The reactions of aryl bromides take place at room temperature, and aryl chlorides react at 80 °C. The easily synthesized and air‐stable catalyst Pd@C‐dots@Fe 3 O 4 NPs could be separated from the reaction mixture by using an external magnet and reused in eight consecutive runs with no significant loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:In this work, an efficient epichlorohydrin–aminoguanidine-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles (FeS@EP–AG–Pd) with highly dispersed Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) was reported for Suzuki reaction in water. After preparation of Fe3O4@SiO2 (FeS), special epichlorohydrin–aminoguanidine linker as a ligand with high content of heteroatoms was covalently bonded onto the FeS MNPs to increase their electron density. PdII ions were then loaded on surface of FeS@EP–AG MNPs and reduced for achieving the uniformly dispersed Pd NPs. FeS@EP–AG–Pd MNPs were performed in Suzuki reaction as an efficient catalyst in water as a green non-toxic solvent. Magnetically separable and recyclable FeS@EP–AG–Pd MNPs were then fully characterized by FTIR, SEM, TEM, TGA, VSM, XRD, and ICP–OES. The heterogeneous catalyst could also easily be recovered and reused with no loss of activity over 6 cycles.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In this method, a novel and efficient magnetically reusable catalyst [Fe 3 O 4 @DAPA-Pd(0)] was prepared through the immobilization of Pd(0) complex on Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles coated with 2,3-diaminopropionic acid and its catalytic behavior was evaluated in the preparation of sulfonamide derivatives through one-pot three-component reactions of aryl or heteroaryl iodides, amines and SO 2 under ecofriendly conditions. A number of spectroscopic techniques including FT-IR, VSM, TGA, EDX, elemental mapping, TEM, SEM, XRD and ICP-OES techniques was used to identify the Fe 3 O 4 @DAPA-Pd(0) nanocatalyst. This method suggested a number advantages such as the preparation of sulfonamide products with high yields, identify the all sulfonamide products by HNMR and CNMR, the performance of the reactions in [BMIM]PF 6 as green solvent, simple separation of the Fe 3 O 4 @DAPA-Pd(0) catalyst by an external magnet and high reusability of the catalyst. VSM, TEM, TGA and ICP-OES techniques was confirmed the high stability and efficiency of the recovered catalyst after 8 times.

Abstract:Novel chelating NHC palladium complexes were synthesized, characterized by NMR, HR‐MS and single crystal X‐ray diffraction, and then reacted with amine‐functionalized magnetic nanoparticles to produce the magnetically supported NHC palladium complexes. The immobilized version showed highly activity, stability, and recyclability in Suzuki–Miyaura reaction and the reduction of 4‐nitrophenol to 4‐aminophenol. Two chelating N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium complexes 3a‐b containing N‐(3‐bromopropyl)‐N′‐thioether difunctionalized imidazol‐2‐ylidene were synthesized by direct metalation of the precursor imidazolium salts and characterized by NMR and HR‐MS. The molecular structure of 3a has been further characterized unambiguously by X‐ray single crystal analysis. The subsequent substitution reaction with amine‐functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs‐NH2) afforded two highly active, stable, and recyclable magnetic nanoparticle supported NHC palladium complexes, MNPs‐NHC‐Pd I‐II, which were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP‐OES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The MNPs‐NHC‐Pd complexes exhibited high catalytic activity in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction of aryl bromides with arylboronic acids, as well as in the reduction of toxic 4‐nitrophenol (4‐NP) under mild conditions. The recycling experiment of MNPs‐NHC‐Pd I in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction between 4‐bromoanisole and phenylboronic acid showed that the yield of 4‐methoxybiphenyl remained high at 88% within 0.5 h at 60 °C, indicating that the catalytic activity was well maintained for at least 10 cycles.

Abstract:Palladium (Pd) has been the key element for several C–C bond-forming reactions, especially the Nobel-acclaimed Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions, among others. This review article describes recent efforts toward the synthetic strategies, characterization, and development of various nanostructured material supports for adorning Pd nanoparticles and their sustainable use in catalyzing at least one of the three aforementioned transformations. Recent advances are highlighted for assorted nanostructured materials-supported Pd nanocatalysts; designed nanostructures possessing engineered morphologies, magnetic Pd nanocomposites, polymers, metal–organic frameworks, and hybrid nanostructured catalysts are described for diverse Pd nanocatalysts. Selected examples expounding the concepts and rationale behind the reactivity enhancement and the reusability of the nanostructured Pd catalysts are presented via control of the structure, composition, and intrinsic nature of the introduced supports. Heterogeneous cross–coupling catalysis, a necessary tool in everyday chemical transformations, is illustrated, implicating eminent functions presented by the structural properties of the supports, associated pros and cons, their recyclability, and the efficiency.

Abstract:In this work, a new magnetic composite comprising starch, imidazolium and triazol groups is used as a support for stabilization of palladium nanoparticles. This material has been characterized by different techniques showing the presence of small and uniform Pd nanoparticles in about 2 nm size. Measuring contact angle confirmed important role of starch on increasing hydrophilic nature of the catalyst. Using 0.05 mol% of this catalyst aryl iodides or bromides reacted with boronic acids at room temperature in aqueous media and the corresponding products are obtained in very good to excellent yields. Hot filtration and PVPy poisoning tests confirmed the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst. E‐factor of the catalyst was found in acceptable range and close to green chemistry standards. This catalyst is magnetically recovered and recycled for 10 consecutive times with small decrease in activity. Also, the robustness of this catalytic system is demonstrated by the characterization of the reused catalyst. A new water dispersible magnetic composite comprising starch, imidazolium and triazol groups was prepared and used for stabilization of palladium nanoparticles in 2 nm average size. The obtaining catalyst was successfully applied for Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling reaction of aryl bromides and iodides at room temperature. This catalyst was showed good stability and recyclability for several runs and fresh and reused catalyst was characterized.

Abstract:Heterogeneous palladium catalysts are widely used in catalytic hydrogenation, oxidation, reduction, and coupling reactions due to their good stability, recyclability, and reusability. Based on the palladium ion fluorescent probe, a novel magnetically recyclable heterogeneous palladium catalyst Fe 3 O 4 @FSM@Pd was constructed and characterized, which is highly efficient and reusable for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The subsequent series of Maitlis' filtration test, catalyst concentration–yield kinetic experiments, and phase trajectory experiments further demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 @FSM@Pd catalyzed through a heterogeneous mechanism under selected reaction conditions. In addition, Fe 3 O 4 @FSM@Pd was applied to catalyze the synthesis of five intermediates of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs): valsartan, sonidegib, erdafitinib, tubulin inhibitor, and lumacaftor. Importantly, the palladium residue in the API intermediates synthesized with Fe 3 O 4 @FSM@Pd as catalyst was less than 1 ppm. Furthermore, Fe 3 O 4 @FSM@Pd is stable and can be reused at least 5 times without losing activity.

Abstract:CoFe 2 O 4 @3D-Network polymers-K22.Pd was synthesized by grafting Kryptofix-22 moieties onto the surface of magnetic 3D-network polymers, followed by a reaction of the nanocomposite with Palladium (II) nitrate. The cavities of the Kryptofix-22 host material can effectively stabilize the Pd nanoparticles and prevent their aggregation and separation from the surface. Using advanced characterization techniques, such as FT-IR, BET, TGA, FE-SEM, TEM, XRD, EDX, and VSM, thorough understanding of the catalyst structure and morphology was facilitated and confirmed, its expected properties. The catalyst has been efficiently applied to Suzuki reactions and reduction of nitro compound derivatives. Its primary advantages include mild reaction conditions, high efficiency, and shorter reaction times than traditional methods. One of the greatest benefits of this catalyst is its reusability. It can be easily separated from the reaction mixture using a magnetic force and reused for up to five cycles without significant activity loss. This is important for sustainable chemistry, as it reduces waste and potentially lowers costs.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) supported on a cerium-based metal–organic framework Ce-MOF-801 (Pd/Ce-MOF-801) was prepared using an incipient wetness impregnation strategy. Multiple analytical techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of Pd/Ce-MOF-801. Afterwards, its catalytic efficiency in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between different haloarenes and phenylboronic acid was assessed. The developed Pd/Ce-MOF-801 displayed a high catalytic performance at 318 K and in the presence of K 2 CO 3 as well as aqueous ethanol (as a solvent), much superior to Pd/Ce-BTC as well as the analogs reported in the literature by comprehensively comparing the catalytic activity and the relationship between reaction temperature and catalyst dosage. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited negligible Pd species leaching and was capable of being recycled in eight successive runs without any decay in reactivity. Such protocol has the advantages of ambient reaction conditions and tolerance to various substrates with various functional groups.

Abstract:Immobilization of highly monodispersed palladium nanoparticles in colloidal mesoporous silica supports has been successfully achieved. The Pd nanoparticles with a uniform small size of ∼1.2 nm can be homogeneously distributed in individual mesopore channels of amino group-functionalized three-dimensional dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (3D-dendritic MSNSs) with a Pd content of ∼2.8%. The 3D-dendritic MSNSs-based nanoreactors show high activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of bromobenzene with phenylboronic acid, obtaining a yield over 99% with 0.075 mol % Pd catalyst at room temperature in the dark within 12 h. More importantly, the excellent catalytic performance can be maintained with a negligible decrease lasting at least six cycles. It further reveals that the mesoporous frameworks of the colloidal silica supports can be well-preserved after four catalytic runs; meanwhile, the Pd nanoparticles in the mesopore channels also can remain the sizes of 1.5±0.3 nm without significant transfer and aggregation. The unique mesostructure of the 3D-dendritic MSNSs with mesopore channels of short length and large diameter is supposed to be the key role in immobilization of active and robust heterogeneous catalysts, and it would have more hopeful prospects in catalytic applications.
