Abstract:Fe3O4 and Pd nanoparticles were assembled on sulfonated graphene (s-G) by an easy chemical approach and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The resulting material could be dispersed homogeneously in water or water/ethanol and further used as an excellent semi-heterogeneous catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction in an environmentally friendly solvent under ligand-free ambient conditions. The high heterogeneous catalytic activity appears to be due to the small size of Pd nanoparticles and homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles on the Fe3O4/s-G matrix. In addition, the catalytic activity did not deteriorate even after repeated applications, which may be due to the easy and efficient magnetic separation of the catalyst and the high dispersion and stability of the catalyst in an aqueous solution.

Abstract:Nanoporous PdCu (NP-PdCu) was prepared by the dealloying strategy from a PdCuAl ternary alloy precursor and characterized systematically using SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS. NP-PdCu was demonstrated to be a competent self-supported heterogenous catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, affording a series of synthetically valuable biaryl compounds in good to excellent yields. This catalyst could be easily separated from the product via centrifugation and reused several times without obvious loss of catalytic performance.

Abstract:Low-loading and recyclable Pd@PANI-catalyzed Suzuki cross-couplings were reported. Compared with known references, the catalyst was prepared using air instead of chemical oxidants, affording the ultra-small and uniform Pd nanoparticles with very high catalytic activity and could be employed at much lower loading (0.12 mol% vs. 2 mol%). Different from our previously reported Heck reaction, the Pd@PANI catalyst could be directly used in Suzuki reaction without baking and free of additional ligands or organic bases. The reaction employed cheap, non-toxic and eco-friendly ethanol as solvent. The catalyst has been successfully applied in drug development, such as the Lapatinib intermediate modification. It should be noticed that the Pd@PANI stored under normal conditions for over one year retained high catalytic activity. Therefore, it is a stable and practical nano-catalyst with great potential to develop the related reagents for versatile applications in future. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reactions, central tools in fine-chemical synthesis, predominantly employ soluble metal complexes despite recognized challenges with product purification and catalyst reusability1–3. Attempts to tether these homogeneous catalysts on insoluble carriers have been thwarted by suboptimal stability, which leads to a progressively worsening performance due to metal leaching or clustering4. The alternative application of supported Pd nanoparticles has faced limitations because of insufficient activity under the mild conditions required to avoid thermal degradation of the substrates or products. Single-atom heterogeneous catalysts lie at the frontier5–18. Here, we show that the Pd atoms anchored on exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride (Pd-ECN) capture the advantages of both worlds, as they comprise a solid catalyst that matches the high chemoselectivity and broad functional group tolerance of state-of-the-art homogeneous catalysts for Suzuki couplings, and also demonstrate a robust stability in flow. The adaptive coordination environment within the macroheterocycles of ECN facilitates each catalytic step. The findings illustrate the exciting opportunities presented by nanostructuring single atoms in solid hosts for catalytic processes that remain difficult to heterogenize.

Abstract:Palladium (Pd) has been the key element for several C–C bond-forming reactions, especially the Nobel-acclaimed Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions, among others. This review article describes recent efforts toward the synthetic strategies, characterization, and development of various nanostructured material supports for adorning Pd nanoparticles and their sustainable use in catalyzing at least one of the three aforementioned transformations. Recent advances are highlighted for assorted nanostructured materials-supported Pd nanocatalysts; designed nanostructures possessing engineered morphologies, magnetic Pd nanocomposites, polymers, metal–organic frameworks, and hybrid nanostructured catalysts are described for diverse Pd nanocatalysts. Selected examples expounding the concepts and rationale behind the reactivity enhancement and the reusability of the nanostructured Pd catalysts are presented via control of the structure, composition, and intrinsic nature of the introduced supports. Heterogeneous cross–coupling catalysis, a necessary tool in everyday chemical transformations, is illustrated, implicating eminent functions presented by the structural properties of the supports, associated pros and cons, their recyclability, and the efficiency.

Abstract:A new porous organic polymer (POP) with high thermal stability and large surface area has been synthesized and applied in the preparation of Pd/POP catalyst. Pd/POP was characterized by XRD, TGA, SEM and TEM. The catalyst consists of highly dispersed palladium nanoparticles of 0.9-4 nm size on POP with a large surface area of 650 m(2)/g. It presents high catalytic activity for Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira reactions. The catalyst was reusable for three to five times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:Conjugated nanoporous polymer colloids (CNPCs) consisting of covalently cross-linked poly(p-phenyleneethynylene) networks were synthesized by using the Sonogashira coupling reaction in a toluene-in-water miniemulsion. The synthesized CNPCs having a uniform particle size distribution exhibit high porosity with a specific surface area of 421 m2/g and a dual distribution of pore size in the micropore and mesopore ranges. They are amenable to postfunctionalization and enhancement of their dispersibility in solvents, and retain their native photoluminescence. The modified CNPCs allow for in situ incorporation of palladium nanocrystals to form the Pd@CNPC composite materials. The Pd@CNPCs are validated to have excellent catalytic activity, outstanding reusability, and exceptionally high TOF (44100 h–1) for the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction.

Abstract:In this work, a highly efficient palladium catalyst was facilely immobilized on the surfaces of magnetic nanoparticles with the coordination of N-heterocyclic carbene. The prepared Pd-NHC@NCPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. With suitably designed emulsion polymerization and immobilization, the final palladium loading could reach 0.78 mmol/g. The catalyst showed outstanding catalytic performance in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction among various substrates, with little catalyst usage (0.03 mol.%), short reaction time, and mild reaction conditions. In addition, the catalyst could be separated conveniently from the reacting system with an external magnet and show good catalytic performance even after being reused five times or more, indicating good recyclability. Abstract:Well dispersed Pd nanoparticles supported on amino functionalized metal-organic frameworks MIL-53(Al)-NH2 (Al(OH)[H2N-BDC], H2N-BDC=2-aminoterephthalic acid, MIL=Materials of Institut Lavoisier) were prepared using a direct anionic exchange approach and subsequent reduction with NaBH4. Abstract:Immobilization of highly monodispersed palladium nanoparticles in colloidal mesoporous silica supports has been successfully achieved. The Pd nanoparticles with a uniform small size of ∼1.2 nm can be homogeneously distributed in individual mesopore channels of amino group-functionalized three-dimensional dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (3D-dendritic MSNSs) with a Pd content of ∼2.8%. The 3D-dendritic MSNSs-based nanoreactors show high activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of bromobenzene with phenylboronic acid, obtaining a yield over 99% with 0.075 mol % Pd catalyst at room temperature in the dark within 12 h. More importantly, the excellent catalytic performance can be maintained with a negligible decrease lasting at least six cycles. It further reveals that the mesoporous frameworks of the colloidal silica supports can be well-preserved after four catalytic runs; meanwhile, the Pd nanoparticles in the mesopore channels also can remain the sizes of 1.5±0.3 nm without significant transfer and aggregation. The unique mesostructure of the 3D-dendritic MSNSs with mesopore channels of short length and large diameter is supposed to be the key role in immobilization of active and robust heterogeneous catalysts, and it would have more hopeful prospects in catalytic applications.

Abstract:Supported palladium catalysts have garnered much interest in the modern chemical industry due to their high catalytic activity and excellent recyclability. Carbon nanofibers are outstanding supports for palladium species because of their large surface areas and chemically inert properties. Herein, with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as the co-spinning agent, palladium cation embedded polyimide nanofibers were first prepared by electrospinning and thermal imidization. Then, these composite nanofibers were carbonized to prepare palladium embedded nitrogen doped carbon nanofibers. It was found that raising the carbonization temperature could reduce the fiber diameter and increase the size of micropores in the fiber. Meanwhile, the Pd2+ cations in the nanofibers were reduced to Pd0 nanoparticles and their sizes grew with the increase of carbonization temperature. The palladium nanoparticles were partially or totally embedded inside the carbon nanofibers. Suzuki reaction catalysis results show that these palladium embedded carbon nanofibers could effectively catalyze the Suzuki reactions of aromatic iodides and bromides with phenylboronic acid to afford the biaryl products with excellent yields. Moreover, this fibrous catalyst can be readily recovered by filtration and reused for 5 times with little loss of initial activity. The remarkable catalytic efficiency and stability of this novel palladium embedded carbon nanofibers could be attributed to the embedment of palladium nanoparticles and chelation of doped nitrogen atoms in the carbon fibers.

Abstract:A new functionalized SBA-16 catalyst immobilized palladium (II) has been synthesized. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP), small-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen physical adsorption and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies have been used to characterize the catalyst. The catalyst exhibited very high activity for Suzuki coupling reaction of aryl halides with arylboronic acids in EtOH/water under air atmosphere. On the other hand, the synthesized catalyst could be separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration and reused up to five runs without significant loss in activity.

Abstract:Suzuki cross-coupling reactions activated by palladium (Pd) catalysts are efficient routes for the synthesis of useful organics. Traditional homogeneous ligand Pd catalysts face tedious separation process and are sensitive to the reaction environments. Here, we report an ultrasmall Pd cluster over the nitrogen-doped carbon materials. The strong electronic interaction between Pd and nitrogen not only suppresses the agglomeration of Pd metals during annealing process but also donates electrons to the Pd centers. The high atom utilization efficiency and electron-rich properties enable the Pd clusters display a high turnover frequency of 198 h−1 for the Suzuki cross-coupling reactions under a mild condition, which is nearly 18-fold higher than the carbon black supported Pd nanocrystals (10.5 h−1). More important, no decay of the activity was observed after five recycle runs.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) supported on a cerium-based metal–organic framework Ce-MOF-801 (Pd/Ce-MOF-801) was prepared using an incipient wetness impregnation strategy. Multiple analytical techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of Pd/Ce-MOF-801. Afterwards, its catalytic efficiency in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between different haloarenes and phenylboronic acid was assessed. The developed Pd/Ce-MOF-801 displayed a high catalytic performance at 318 K and in the presence of K 2 CO 3 as well as aqueous ethanol (as a solvent), much superior to Pd/Ce-BTC as well as the analogs reported in the literature by comprehensively comparing the catalytic activity and the relationship between reaction temperature and catalyst dosage. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited negligible Pd species leaching and was capable of being recycled in eight successive runs without any decay in reactivity. Such protocol has the advantages of ambient reaction conditions and tolerance to various substrates with various functional groups.
