Abstract:Core self-evaluation has become an increasingly popular topic in recent years. The present study attempts to place core self-evaluation in supervisor-subordinates dyads, and consider both of its positive and negative effects. Guided by dominance complementarity theory, we sought to clarify the role of supervisors core self-evaluation by examining its moderating effects on the relations between subordinates core self-evaluation and two forms of proactive behaviours: helping and voice. Our results revealed positive relationships between subordinates core self-evaluation and the two proactive behaviours. The positive relationship between subordinates core self-evaluation and voice however was stronger when supervisors possess low rather than high core self-evaluation. We discuss how these findings contribute to the literature on core self-evaluation, leadership, and proactive behaviours.
