Abstract:We construct a lattice formulation of a mass-deformed two-dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory with preserving two supercharges exactly. Gauge fields are represented by compact unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges on the lattice are nilpotent up to gauge transformations and SU(2)_R rotations. Due to the mass deformation, the lattice model is free from the vacuum degeneracy problem, which was encountered in earlier approaches, and flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized giving discrete minima representing fuzzy S^2. Around the trivial minimum, quantum continuum theory is obtained with no tuning, which serves a nonperturbative construction of the IIA matrix string theory. Moreover, around the minimum of k-coincident fuzzy spheres, four-dimensional N=4 U(k) super Yang-Mills theory with two commutative and two noncommutative directions emerges. In this theory, sixteen supersymmetries are broken by the mass deformation to two. Assuming the breaking is soft, we give a scenario leading to undeformed N=4 super Yang-Mills on R^4 without any fine tuning. As an evidence for the validity of the assumption, some computation of 1-loop radiative corrections is presented.
M-theory geometric engineering for rank-0 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories

Abstract:M-theory geometric engineering on non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds (CY4) produces 3d theories with 4 supercharges. Carefully establishing a dictionary between the geometry of the CY4 and the QFT in the transverse directions remains, to a large extent, an unresolved challenge, complicated by subtleties arising from M5-brane instanton corrections. Such difficulties can be circumvented in the restricted and yet controlled setting offered by CY4 with terminal singularities, as they do not admit crepant resolutions with compact exceptional divisors. After a general review of their properties and partial classifications, we focus on a subclass of terminal CY4 constructed as deformed Du Val singularities, that admit crepant resolutions with at most exceptional 2-cycles. We extract the corresponding 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory descendant in an unambiguous fashion, as the absence of compact 4-cycles leaves no room for a choice of background $G_4$ flux. These turn out to be theories of chiral multiplets with no gauge group and at most abelian flavor factors: we argue that they serve as the simplest building blocks to substantiate a rigorous CY4/3d QFT geometric engineering mapping.

Abstract:We study Wilson loops in the 4-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric quiver/M theory duality recently constructed by Gaiotto and Maldacena, that is conjectured to be dual to M2 branes on AdS_5\times S^4 fibered over Σ_2. We use the localization method raised by Pestun, in order to compute the Wilson loop in 4-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric linear quiver gauge theory. We obtained the consistent results in the quiver gauge theory and the 11-dimensional supergravity. This match supports the N=2 quiver SCFT / M theory supergravity duality.

Abstract:We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1404.5527" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.5527">arXiv:1404.5527</a>. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Abstract:We perform a topological-holomorphic twist of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theory on a four-manifold of the form $M_4=\Sigma_1 \times \Sigma_2$ with Riemann surfaces $\Sigma_{1,2}$, and unravel the mathematical implications of its physics. In particular, we consider different linear combinations of the resulting scalar supercharges under $S$-duality, where this will allow us to derive novel topological and holomorphic invariants of $M_4$ and their Langlands duals. As the twisted theory can be topological along $\Sigma_1$ whence we can dimensionally reduce it to 2d, via the effective sigma-model on $\Sigma_2$, we can also relate these 4d invariants and their Langlands duals to the mirror symmetry of Higgs bundles and that of quasi-topological strings described by the sheaf of chiral differential operators. As an offshoot, we would be able to obtain a fundamental understanding from 4d gauge theory, why chiral differential operators are purely perturbative objects.

Abstract:We construct four-dimensional N=4 super-Yang-Mills theories on a conic sphere with various background R-symmetry gauge fields. We study free energy and supersymmetric Renyi entropy using heat kernel method as well as localization technique. We find that the universal contribution to the partition function in the free field limit is the same as that in the strong coupling limit, which implies that it may be protected by supersymmetry. Based on the fact that, the conic sphere can be conformally mapped to $S^1\times H^3$ and the R-symmetry background fields can be supported by the R-charges of black hole, we propose that the holographic dual of these theories are five-dimensional, supersymmetric STU topological black holes. We demonstrate perfect agreement between N=4 super-Yang-Mills theories in the planar limit and the STU topological black holes.
3d $N=2$ theories from M-theory on CY4 and IIB brane box

Abstract:We study 3D $N=2$ supersymmetric field theories geometrically engineered from M-theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds (CY4). We establish a detailed dictionary between the geometry and topology of non-compact CY4 and the physics of 3D $N=2$ theories in three different regimes. The first one is the Coulomb branch description when the CY4 is smooth. The second one is non-abelian gauge theory when the CY4 has a degenerate $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibration structure. The third one is the strongly coupled SCFT from a CY4 singularity. We find interesting flavor symmetry enhancements in the singular limit of CY4, as well as an interesting and previously unexplored phenomenon in 3D, termed ``flavor symmetry duality''. Many examples are analyzed with an emphasis on toric CY4s and $\mathbb{C}^4$ orbifolds with crepant resolutions. We develop a new brane box method to study the physics of Coulomb branch of 3D $N=2$ theory that admits a toric construction. Via IIB/M-theory duality we find that the brane box diagram living in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be physically realized as a configuration of intersecting 4-branes which are extended objects in 8D maximal supersymmetric theory, which is shown to be consistent via various chains of dualities. The rank, effective gauge coupling and certain hints to flavor symmetry enhancement of the 3D $N=2$ theory are read off from the brane box and cross-checked against the results obtained from geometric engineering. The exotic branes in 8D maximal supersymmetric theory and the 4-string junctions thereof are shown to play a crucial role in the construction of the brane box.

Abstract:We study theories with 16 supercharges and a discrete energy spectrum. One class of theories has symmetry group $SU(2|4)$. They arise as truncations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. They include the plane-wave matrix model, $2+1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{2}$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{3}/{Z}_{k}$. We explain how to obtain their gravity duals in a unified way. We explore the regions of the geometry that are relevant for the study of some $1/2$ BPS and near BPS states. This leads to a class of two dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric sigma models with nonzero $H$ flux, including a massive deformed WZW model. We show how to match some features of the string spectrum with the Yang-Mills theory. The other class of theories are also connected to $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and arise by making some of the transverse scalars compact. Their vacua are characterized by a 2D Yang-Mills theory or 3D Chern-Simons theory. These theories realize peculiar super-Poincar\'e symmetry algebras in $2+1$ or $1+1$ dimensions with ``noncentral'' charges. We finally discuss gravity duals of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{1}$.

Abstract:In physics literature about supersymmetry, many authors refer to \emph{super Minkowski spaces}. These spaces are affine supermanifolds with certain distinguished spin structures. In these notes, we make the notion of such spin structures precise and generalise the setup to curved supermanifolds. This leads to the more general notion of \emph{spinorial superspaces}. By working in a suitable geometric and coordinate-free setting, many explicit coordinate computations appearing in physics literature can be replaced by more conceptual methods. As an application of the rather general framework of spinorial superspaces, we formulate $\mathcal N = 1$ super Yang-Mills theories on curved superspaces of spacetime dimensions $d=3$ and $d=4$ and show how to reduce the theory to field theories defined on an underlying ordinary spacetime manifold.

Abstract:Four dimensional N=2 generalized superconformal field theory can be defined by compactifying six dimensional (0,2) theory on a Riemann surface with regular punctures. In previous studies, gauge coupling constant space is identified with the moduli space of punctured Riemann surface M_{g,n}. We show that the weakly coupled gauge group description corresponds to a stable nodal curve, and the coupling space is actually the Deligne-Mumford compactification \bar{M}_{g,n}. We also give an algorithm to determine the weakly coupled gauge group and matter content in any duality frame.

Abstract:We present a non-geometric derivation of $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super Yang-Mills by focusing on the consistency of interactions that extend the free vector supermultiplet rather than assuming gauge invariance under extended symmetries. By utilizing a superspace first-order description, the theory is given in closed form as a third-order polynomial which includes a single cubic interaction term instead of an infinite series, thus eliminating the need for a special gauge. The geometrical interpretation of the theory emerges, as opposed to being presupposed.

Abstract:We explore the relationship between four-dimensional N=2 quantum field theories and their associated BPS quivers. For a wide class of theories including super-Yang-Mills theories, Argyres-Douglas models, and theories defined by M5-branes on punctured Riemann surfaces, there exists a quiver which implicitly characterizes the field theory. We study various aspects of this correspondence including the quiver interpretation of flavor symmetries, gauging, decoupling limits, and field theory dualities. In general a given quiver describes only a patch of the moduli space of the field theory, and a key role is played by quantum mechanical dualities, encoded by quiver mutations, which relate distinct quivers valid in different patches. Analyzing the consistency conditions imposed on the spectrum by these dualities results in a powerful and novel mutation method for determining the BPS states. We apply our method to determine the BPS spectrum in a wide class of examples, including the strong coupling spectrum of super-Yang-Mills with an ADE gauge group and fundamental matter, and trinion theories defined by M5-branes on spheres with three punctures.

On the Geometry of N=2 Minkowski Vacua of Gauged N=2 Supergravity Theories in Four Dimensions

Abstract:Gauging isometries of four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories yields an N=2 supersymmetric theory with a scalar potential. In this note, we study the well-known constraints for four-dimensional N=2 Minkowski vacua of such theories. We propose that classically a projective special Kähler submanifold of the projective Kähler target space of the ungauged theory describes the moduli space of the complex scalar fields of massless vector multiplets for N=2 Minkowski vacua configurations, which then receives quantum corrections from integrating out massive fields. Subloci of projective special Kähler manifolds appear as supersymmetric flux vacua in the context of type IIB Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications with background fluxes as well. While these flux vacua equations arise from the critical locus of an N=1 superpotential, we show that these equations can also be obtained from the N=2 supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum equations of gauged N=2 supergravity theories upon gauging suitable isometries in the semi-classical universal hypermultiplet sector of type IIB string Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications. Thus, we give an intrinsic N=2 supersymmetric interpretation to the flux vacua equations.

Abstract:We give an N = 1 supersymmetrization of a four-dimensional self-dual Yang-Mills theory based on the product superspace (1,1) x (1,1). The model is shown to be equivalent to the zero curvature condition on a superplane parametrized by a point in the complex projective superspace CP3,4. The linear system is given according to this geometrical interpretation, and the effective action which governs the dynamics of the model is also proposed.

Abstract:By analyzing brane configurations in detail, and extracting general lessons, we develop methods for analyzing S-duality of supersymmetric boundary conditions in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. In the process, we find that S-duality of boundary conditions is closely related to mirror symmetry of three-dimensional gauge theories, and we analyze the IR behavior of large classes of quiver gauge theories.

Abstract:Quantum Field Theories engineered in M-theory can have 2-group symmetries, mixing 0-form and 1-form symmetry backgrounds in non-trivial ways. In this paper we develop methods for determining the 2-group structure from the boundary geometry of the M-theory background. We illustrate these methods in the case of 5d theories arising from M-theory on ordinary and generalised toric Calabi-Yau cones, including cases in which the resulting theory is non-Lagrangian. Our results confirm and elucidate previous results on 2-groups from geometric engineering.

Abstract:We examine the dual correspondence between holographic IIB superstring theory and N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at finite values of the coupling constants. In particular we analyze a field theory strong-coupling expansion which is the S-dual of the planar expansion. This expansion arises naturally as the AdS/CFT dual of the IIB superstring scattering amplitudes given a genus truncation property due to modular invariance. The space-time structure of the contributions to the field theory four-point correlation functions obtained from the IIB scattering elements is investigated in the example of the product of four conserved stress tensors, and is expressed as an infinite sum of field theory triangle integrals. The OPE structure of these contributions to the stress tensor four-point function is analyzed and shown not to give rise to any poles. Quantization of the string in the background of a five-form field strength is performed through a covariantized background field approach, and relations to the N=4 topological string are found.

Abstract:We take a fresh look at the relation between generalised Kähler geometry and N = (2, 2) supersymmetric sigma models in two dimensions formulated in terms of (2, 2) superfields. Dual formulations in terms of different kinds of superfield are combined to give a formulation with a doubled target space and both the original superfield and the dual superfield. For Kähler geometry, we show that this doubled geometry is Donaldson's deformation of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the original Kähler manifold. This doubled formulation gives an elegant geometric reformulation of the equations of motion. We interpret the equations of motion as the intersection of two Lagrangian submanifolds (or of a Lagrangian submanifold with an isotropic one) in the infinite dimensional symplectic supermanifold which is the analogue of phase space. We then consider further extensions of this formalism, including one in which the geometry is quadrupled, and discuss their geometry.

Abstract:We study a class of two-dimensional 𝒩=(0, 4) quiver gauge theories that flow to superconformal field theories. We find dualities for the superconformal field theories similar to the 4d 𝒩=2 theories of class 𝒮 , labelled by a Riemann surface 𝒞 . The dual descriptions arise from various pair-of-pants decompositions, that involve an analog of the T N theory. Especially, we find the superconformal indices of such theories can be written in terms of a topological field theory on 𝒞 . We interpret this class of SCFTs as the ones coming from compactifying 6d 𝒩=(2, 0) theory on ℂℙ^1×𝒞 . Moreover, some new dualities of (0 , 2) and (2 , 2) theories are also discussed.
