Abstract:M-theory geometric engineering on non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds (CY4) produces 3d theories with 4 supercharges. Carefully establishing a dictionary between the geometry of the CY4 and the QFT in the transverse directions remains, to a large extent, an unresolved challenge, complicated by subtleties arising from M5-brane instanton corrections. Such difficulties can be circumvented in the restricted and yet controlled setting offered by CY4 with terminal singularities, as they do not admit crepant resolutions with compact exceptional divisors. After a general review of their properties and partial classifications, we focus on a subclass of terminal CY4 constructed as deformed Du Val singularities, that admit crepant resolutions with at most exceptional 2-cycles. We extract the corresponding 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory descendant in an unambiguous fashion, as the absence of compact 4-cycles leaves no room for a choice of background $G_4$ flux. These turn out to be theories of chiral multiplets with no gauge group and at most abelian flavor factors: we argue that they serve as the simplest building blocks to substantiate a rigorous CY4/3d QFT geometric engineering mapping.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the problem of establishing a precise correspondence between the geometry of non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds (CY4) and 3-dimensional quantum field theories (QFT) with 4 supersymmetries through M-theory geometric engineering. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to extract the corresponding 3-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories from CY4s with terminal singularities, which do not contain compact 4-cycles, thereby avoiding the complexities introduced by M5-brane instanton effects. ### Main Issues 1. **Establishing the Correspondence between Geometry and Field Theory**: - One of the goals of the paper is to systematically organize the mathematical literature on Calabi-Yau fourfolds with terminal singularities and explore the applications of these singularities in physics. - The focus is particularly on how to extract 3-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories from these terminal singularities in CY4s, which contain no vector multiplets but only neutral or charged chiral multiplets. 2. **Handling M5-Brane Instanton Effects**: - An important feature of terminal singularities is that they do not contain compact 4-cycles, thus avoiding the complexities brought by M5-brane instanton effects. - This makes the extraction of 3-dimensional theories from these singularities more straightforward and controllable. 3. **Studying Specific Classes of Singularities**: - The paper particularly focuses on a class of terminal CY4s formed by deformed Du Val singularities, which contain at most 2-cycles as exceptional sets. - Through these singularities, the authors hope to construct the simplest 3-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories, which can serve as basic building blocks for constructing more complex theories. ### Specific Goals - **Systematic Review of Mathematical Literature**: A detailed review of the definitions and classifications of terminal singularities, especially comparing them with terminal singularities in Calabi-Yau threefolds (CY3). - **Extracting 3-dimensional N=2 Theories**: Through specific examples, demonstrate how to extract 3-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories from CY4s with specific singularities and verify whether these theories flow to a superconformal field theory (SCFT) in the infrared limit. ### Methods - **Mathematical Tools**: Utilizing methods from complex geometry and algebraic geometry, particularly the concepts of crepant resolutions and small resolutions. - **Physical Tools**: Analyzing the properties of 3-dimensional theories through the physical behavior of M2-branes and M5-branes, especially their behavior in the infrared limit. ### Conclusion - By systematically studying CY4s with terminal singularities, the paper aims to provide a clearer framework for M-theory geometric engineering, particularly in the construction of 3-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories. - These theories can serve as basic building blocks for constructing more complex theories, providing new perspectives for understanding higher-dimensional superconformal field theories.
