Abstract:We prove in a large number of cases, that a Zariski dense discrete subgroup of a simple real algebraic group $G$ which contains a higher rank lattice is a lattice in the group $G$. For example, we show that a Zariski dense subgroup of $SL_n({\mathbb R})$ which contains $SL_3({\mathbb Z})$ in the top left hand corner, is conjugate to $SL_n({\mathbb Z})$ .

Abstract:If Gamma is a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in a semisimple Lie group whose real rank is greater than 1, we show Gamma contains a subgroup that is isomorphic to a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in either SL(3,R), SL(3,C), or a direct product SL(2,R)^m x SL(2,C)^n$, with m + n > 1. (In geometric terms, this can be interpreted as a statement about the existence of totally geodesic subspaces of finite-volume, noncompact, locally symmetric spaces of higher rank.) Another formulation of the result states that if G is any isotropic, almost simple algebraic group over Q (the rational numbers), such that the real rank of G is greater than 1, then G contains an isotropic, almost simple Q-subgroup H, such that H is quasisplit, and the real rank of H is greater than 1.

Abstract:We prove that, under mild assumptions, a lattice in a product of semi-simple Lie group and a totally disconnected locally compact group is, in a certain sense, arithmetic. We do not assume the lattice to be finitely generated or the ambient group to be compactly generated.

Abstract:Let W be an irreducible finitely generated Coxeter group. The geometric representation of W in GL(V) provides a discrete embedding in the orthogonal group of the Tits form (the associated bilinear form of the Coxeter group). If the Tits form of the Coxeter group is non-positive and non-degenerate, the Coxeter group does not contain any finite index subgroup isomorphic to an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group of R-rank greater or equal to 2.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, semisimple, real Lie group with finite centre, with real rank at least two. B.Deroin and S.Hurtado recently proved the 30-year-old conjecture that no irreducible lattice in $G$ has a left-invariant total order. (Equivalently, they proved that no such lattice has a nontrivial, orientation-preserving action on the real line.) We will explain many of the main ideas of the proof, by using them to prove the analogous result for lattices in $p$-adic semisimple groups. The $p$-adic case is easier, because some of the technical issues do not arise.

Abstract:Let G be a higher rank semisimple linear algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field. The simplicial complexes corresponding to any sequence of pairwise non-conjugate irreducible lattices in G are Benjamini–Schramm convergent to the Bruhat–Tits building. Convergence of the relative Plancherel measures and normalized Betti numbers follows. This extends the work (Abert et al. in Ann Math 185(3):711–790, 2017) from real Lie groups to linear groups over arbitrary local fields. Along the way, various results concerning Invariant Random Subgroups and in particular a variant of the classical Borel density theorem are also extended.

Degree bounds for rational generators of invariant fields of finite abelian groups

Abstract:We study degree bounds on rational but not necessarily polynomial generators for the field $\mathbf{k}(V)^G$ of rational invariants of a linear action of a finite abelian group. We show that lattice-theoretic methods used recently by the author and collaborators to study polynomial generators for the same field largely carry over, after minor modifications to the arguments. It then develops that the specific degree bounds found in that setting also carry over.

Abstract:Abstract The automorphism group of an affine variety is an ind‐group. Its Lie algebra is canonically embedded into the Lie algebra of vector fields on . We study the relations between subgroups of and Lie subalgebras of . We show that a subgroup generated by a family of connected algebraic subgroups of is algebraic if and only if the Lie algebras generate a finite‐dimensional Lie subalgebra of . Extending a result by Cohen–Draisma (Transform. Groups 8 (2003), no. 1, 51–68), we prove that a locally finite Lie algebra generated by locally nilpotent vector fields is algebraic, that is, for an algebraic subgroup . Along the same lines, we prove that if a subgroup generated by finitely many connected algebraic groups is solvable, then it is an algebraic group. We also show that a unipotent algebraic subgroup has derived length . This result is based on the following triangulation theorem: Every unipotent algebraic subgroup of with a dense orbit in is conjugate to a subgroup of the de Jonquières subgroup . Furthermore, we give an example of a free subgroup generated by two algebraic elements such that the Zariski closure is a free product of two nested commutative closed unipotent ind‐subgroups. To any affine ind‐group , one can associate a canonical ideal . It is linearly generated by the tangent spaces for all algebraic subsets that are smooth in . It has the important property that for a surjective homomorphism , the induced homomorphism is surjective as well. Moreover, if is a subnormal closed ind‐subgroup of finite codimension, then has finite codimension in .

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:This paper classifies the pairs of nonzero integers $(m,n)$ for which the locally compact group of combinatorial automorphisms, Aut$(X_{m,n})$, contains incommensurable torsion-free lattices, where $X_{m,n}$ is the combinatorial model for Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(m, n)$. In particular, we show that Aut$(X_{m,n})$ contains abstractly incommensurable torsion-free lattices if and only if there exists a prime $p \leq gcd(m, n)$ such that either $m/gcd(m,n)$ or $n/gcd(m,n)$ is divisible by $p$. Additionally, we show that when Aut$(X_{m,n})$ does not contain incommensurable lattices, the cell complex $X_{m,n}$ satisfies Leighton$'$s property.

A higher index on finite-volume locally symmetric spaces

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, real semisimple Lie group. Let $K<G$ be maximal compact, and let $\Gamma < G$ be discrete and such that $\Gamma \backslash G$ has finite volume. If the real rank of $G$ is $1$ and $\Gamma$ is torsion-free, then Barbasch and Moscovici obtained an index theorem for Dirac operators on the locally symmetric space $\Gamma \backslash G/K$. We obtain a higher version of this, by constructing an index of Dirac operators on $G/K$ in the $K$-theory of an algebra on which the conjugation-invariant terms in Barbasch and Moscovici's index theorem define continuous traces. The resulting index theorems also apply when $\Gamma$ has torsion. The cases of these index theorems for traces defined by semisimple orbital integrals extend to Song and Tang's higher orbital integrals, and yield nonzero and computable results even when $\operatorname{rank}(G)> \operatorname{rank}(K)$, or the real rank of $G$ is larger than $1$.

On the genera of semisimple groups defined over an integral domain of a global function field

Abstract:Let $K=\mathbb{F}_q(C)$ be the global function field of rational functions over a smooth and projective curve $C$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The ring of regular functions on $C-S$ where $S \neq \emptyset$ is any finite set of closed points on $C$ is a Dedekind domain $\mathcal{O}_S$ of $K$. For a semisimple $\mathcal{O}_S$-group $\underline{G}$ with a smooth fundamental group $\underline{F}$, we aim to describe both the set of genera of $\underline{G}$ and its principal genus (the latter if $\underline{G} \otimes_{\mathcal{O}_S} K$ is isotropic at $S$) in terms of abelian groups depending on $\mathcal{O}_S$ and $\underline{F}$ only. This leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse local-global principle to hold for certain $\underline{G}$. We also use it to express the Tamagawa number $\tau(G)$ of a semisimple $K$-group $G$ by the Euler Poincaré invariant. This facilitates the computation of $\tau(G)$ for twisted $K$-groups.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a particular lattice of subgroups called a "cyclic-diamond" and show that every finite non-cyclic group contains a cyclic-diamond as a sublattice of its lattice of subgroups. Turning to the infinite case, we show that an infinite abelian group does not contain a cyclic-diamond in its subgroup lattice if and only if all of its finitely generated subgroups are cyclic or isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}_{2^N}$ for some $N$.

Lifting Generators in Connected Lie Groups

Abstract:Given an epimorphism between topological groups $f:G\to H$, when can a generating set of $H$ be lifted to a generating set of $G$? We show that for connected Lie groups the problem is fundamentally abelian: generators can be lifted if and only if they can be lifted in the induced map between the abelianisations (assuming the number of generators is at least the minimal number of generators of $G$). As a consequence, we deduce that connected perfect Lie groups satisfy the Gaschütz lemma: generating sets of quotients can always be lifted. If the Lie group is not perfect, this may fail. The extent to which a group fails to satisfy the Gaschütz lemma is measured by its\emph{ Gaschütz rank}, which we bound for all connected Lie groups, and compute exactly in most cases. Additionally, we compute the maximal size of an irredundant generating set of connected abelian Lie groups, and discuss connections between such generation problems with the Wiegold conjecture.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface and $G$ a finite group of orientation preserving automorphisms of $S$ whose orbit space has genus at least $2$. There is a natural group homomorphism from the $G$-centralizer in $Diff^+(S)$ to the $G$-centralizer in $Sp(H_1(S))$. We give a sufficient condition for its image to be a subgroup of finite index and a weaker condition for this to have no finite nonzero orbit (the Putman-Wieland property).

Abstract:We prove for $m\geq1$ and $n\geq5$ that the level $m$ congruence subgroup $B_n[m]$ of the braid group $B_n$ associated to the integral Burau representation $B_n\to\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$ is generated by $m$th powers of half-twists and the braid Torelli group. This solves a problem of Margalit, generalizing work of Assion, Brendle--Margalit, Nakamura, Stylianakis and Wajnryb.

On subgroups of finite index in complex hyperbolic lattice triangle groups

Abstract:We study several explicit finite index subgroups in the known complex hyperbolic lattice triangle groups, and show some of them are neat, some of them have positive first Betti number, some of them have a homomorphisms onto a non-Abelian free group. For some lattice triangle groups, we determine the minimal index of a neat subgroup. Finally, we answer a question raised by Stover and describe an infinite tower of neat ball quotients all with a single cusp.

Abstract:We describe a generalization of the concept of a pc presentation that applies to groups with a nontrivial solvable radical. Such a representation can be much more efficient in terms of memory use and even of arithmetic, than permuattion and matrix representations. We illustrate the use of such representations by constructing a maximal subgroup of the sporadic monster group and calculating its -- hitherto unknown -- character table.
