Abstract:We prove that, under mild assumptions, a lattice in a product of semi-simple Lie group and a totally disconnected locally compact group is, in a certain sense, arithmetic. We do not assume the lattice to be finitely generated or the ambient group to be compactly generated.

Abstract:We study lattices in free abelian groups of infinite rank that are invariant under the action of the infinite symmetric group, with emphasis on finiteness of their equivariant bases. Our framework provides a new method for proving finiteness results in algebraic statistics. As an illustration, we show that every invariant lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^{(\mathbb{N}\times[c])}$, where $c\in\mathbb{N}$, has a finite equivariant Graver basis. This result generalizes and strengthens several finiteness results about Markov bases in the literature.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:Lattices of subgroup and subsystem functors are investigated. In particular, it is proved that for the case where X is a formation of finite groups and width of the lattice F0(X) is at most |π(X)|, the formation X is metanilpotent and |π(X)| ⩽ 3.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a particular lattice of subgroups called a "cyclic-diamond" and show that every finite non-cyclic group contains a cyclic-diamond as a sublattice of its lattice of subgroups. Turning to the infinite case, we show that an infinite abelian group does not contain a cyclic-diamond in its subgroup lattice if and only if all of its finitely generated subgroups are cyclic or isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}_{2^N}$ for some $N$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a Dedekind domain whose field of fractions $K$ is a global field. Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional separable $K$-algebra and let $\Lambda$ be an $\mathcal{O}$-order in $A$. Let $n$ be a positive integer and suppose that $X$ is a $\Lambda$-lattice such that $K \otimes_{\mathcal{O}} X$ is free of rank $n$ over $A$. Then $X$ contains a (non-unique) free $\Lambda$-sublattice of rank $n$. The main result of the present article is to show there exists such a sublattice $Y$ such that the generalised module index $[X : Y]_{\mathcal{O}}$ has explicit upper bounds with respect to division that are independent of $X$ and can be chosen to satisfy certain conditions. We give examples of applications to the approximation of normal integral bases and strong Minkowski units, and to the Galois module structure of rational points over abelian varieties.

Abstract:Under hypotheses required for the Taylor-Wiles method, we prove for forms of $U(3)$ which are compact at infinity that the lattice structure on upper alcove algebraic vectors or on principal series types given by the $\lambda$-isotypic part of completed cohomology is a local invariant of the Galois representation attached to $\lambda$ when this Galois representation is residually irreducible locally at places dividing $p$. As a crucial input, we establish corresponding mod $p$ multiplicity one results. Our main innovation is the combination of integral Hecke theory and the Taylor--Wiles method.

Abstract:Let n be a positive integer, and let (sigma = {sigma _i mid i in I}) be a partition of the set of all primes. It is shown that every law of the lattice of all formations is fulfilled in the lattice of all n-multiply (sigma )-local formations of finite groups. This result implies that the lattice of all n-multiply (sigma )-local formations of finite groups is modular but not distributive for any nonnegative integer n. Let ({mathfrak {F}}) and ({mathfrak {H}}) be n-multiply (sigma )-local formations of finite groups such that ({mathfrak {H}} subseteq {mathfrak {F}}). Denote by ({mathfrak {F}} /_n^sigma {mathfrak {H}}) the lattice of all n-multiply (sigma )-local formations ({mathfrak {M}}) such that ({mathfrak {H}} subseteq {mathfrak {M}} subseteq {mathfrak {F}}). If ({mathfrak {M}} subset {mathfrak {F}}) and the lattice ({mathfrak {F}} /_n^sigma {mathfrak {M}}) consists of only two elements then ({mathfrak {M}}) is called a maximal n-multiply (sigma )-local subformation of ({mathfrak {F}}). The properties of the intersection of the maximal n-multiply (sigma )-local subformations of (mathfrak F) are described.

Abstract:We prove in a large number of cases, that a Zariski dense discrete subgroup of a simple real algebraic group $G$ which contains a higher rank lattice is a lattice in the group $G$. For example, we show that a Zariski dense subgroup of $SL_n({\mathbb R})$ which contains $SL_3({\mathbb Z})$ in the top left hand corner, is conjugate to $SL_n({\mathbb Z})$ .

Abstract:We present a method to compute finite index subgroups of $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Our strategy follows Kulkarni's ideas, the main contribution being a recursive method to compute bivalent trees and their automorphism group. As a concrete application, we compute all subgroups of index up to 20. We then use this database to produce tables with several arithmetical properties.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

On the lattice of closed subgroups of a profinite group

Abstract:The subgroup lattice of a group is a great source of information about the structure of the group itself. The aim of this paper is to use a similar tool for studying profinite groups. In more detail, we study the lattices of closed or open subgroups of a profinite group and its relation with the whole group. We show, for example, that procyclic groups are the only profinite groups with a distributive lattice of closed or open subgroups, and we give a sharp characterization of profinite groups whose lattice of closed (or open) subgroups satisfies the Dedekind modular law; we actually give a precise description of the behaviour of modular elements of the lattice of closed subgroups. We also deal with the problem of carrying some structural information from a profinite group to another one having an isomorphic lattice of closed (or open) subgroups. Some interesting consequences and related results concerning decomposability and the number of profinite groups with a given lattice of closed (or open) subgroups are also obtained.

Abstract:We study several explicit finite index subgroups in the known complex hyperbolic lattice triangle groups, and show some of them are neat, some of them have positive first Betti number, some of them have a homomorphisms onto a non-Abelian free group. For some lattice triangle groups, we determine the minimal index of a neat subgroup. Finally, we answer a question raised by Stover and describe an infinite tower of neat ball quotients all with a single cusp.

The irreducible representation of the U-dual modular group is the quantum deformed black brane throat. Abstract:Let G be a higher rank semisimple linear algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field. The simplicial complexes corresponding to any sequence of pairwise non-conjugate irreducible lattices in G are Benjamini–Schramm convergent to the Bruhat–Tits building. Convergence of the relative Plancherel measures and normalized Betti numbers follows. This extends the work (Abert et al. in Ann Math 185(3):711–790, 2017) from real Lie groups to linear groups over arbitrary local fields. Along the way, various results concerning Invariant Random Subgroups and in particular a variant of the classical Borel density theorem are also extended.

Abstract:We prove a variant of the well-known Reidemeister-Schreier theorem for finitely $L$-presented groups. More precisely, we prove that each finite index subgroup of a finitely $L$-presented group is itself finitely $L$-presented. Our proof is constructive and it yields a finite $L$-presentation for the subgroup. We further study conditions on a finite index subgroup of an invariantly finitely $L$-presented group to be invariantly $L$-presented itself.
