Abstract:First, this paper provides a new proof for the expression of the generalized first order Melnikov function on piecewise smooth differential systems with multiply straight lines. Then, by using the Melnikov function, we consider the limit cycle bifurcation problem of a 3-piecewise near Hamiltonian system with two switching lines, obtaining \begin{document}$ 2n+3[\frac{n+1}{2}] $\end{document} limit cycles near the double generalized homoclinic loop.

Abstract:We study the number and distribution of the limit cycles of a planar vector field whose component functions are random polynomials. We prove a lower bound on the average number of limit cycles when the random polynomials are sampled from the Kostlan-Shub-Smale ensemble. Investigating a problem introduced by Brudnyi [Annals of Mathematics (2001)] we also consider a special local setting of counting limit cycles near a randomly perturbed center focus, and when the perturbation has i.i.d. coefficients, we prove a limit law showing that the number of limit cycles situated within a disk of radius less than unity converges almost surely to the number of real zeros of a logarithmically-correlated random univariate power series. We also consider infinitesimal perturbations where we obtain precise asymptotics on the global average count of limit cycles for a family of models. The proofs of these results use novel combinations of techniques from dynamical systems and random analytic functions.

Abstract:Analytic rotated vector fields have four significant properties: as the rotated parameter changes, the amplitude of each stable (or unstable) limit cycle varies monotonically, each semi-stable limit cycle bifurcates at most two limit cycles, the isolated homoclinic loop (if exists) disappears while a unique limit cycle with the same stability arises or no closed orbits arise oppositely, and a unique limit cycle arises near the weak focus (if exists). In this paper, we prove that the four properties remain true for a rotated family of generalized Liénard systems having finitely many switching lines. Furthermore, we discuss variational exponent and use it to formulate multiplicity of limit cycles. Then we apply our results to give exact number of limit cycles to a continuous piecewise linear system with three zones and answer to a question on the maximum number of limit cycles in an SD oscillator.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish the Bott-type iteration formulas and some abstract precise iteration formulas of the Maslov-type index theory associated with a Lagrangian subspace for symplectic paths. As an application, we prove that there exist at least $[\frac{n}{2}]+1$ geometrically distinct brake orbits on every $C^2$ compact convex symmetric hypersurface $\Sigma$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ satisfying the reversible condition $N\Sigma=\Sigma$, furthermore, if all brake orbits on this hypersurface are nondegenerate, then there are at least $n$ geometrically distinct brake orbits on it. As a consequence, we show that there exist at least $[\frac{n}{2}]+1$ geometrically distinct brake orbits in every bounded convex symmetric domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, furthermore, if all brake orbits in this domain are nondegenerate, then there are at least $n$ geometrically distinct brake orbits in it. In the symmetric case, we give a positive answer to the Seifert conjecture of 1948 under a generic condition.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:The paper deals with planar polynomial vector fields. We aim to estimate the number of orbital topological equivalence classes for the fields of degree n. An evident obstacle for this is the second part of Hilbert's 16th problem. To circumvent this obstacle we introduce the notion of equivalence modulo limit cycles. This paper is the continuation of the author's paper in [Mosc. Math. J. 1 (2001), no. 4] where the lower bound of the form 2^{cn^2} has been obtained. Here we obtain the upper bound of the same form. We also associate an equipped planar graph to every planar polynomial vector field, this graph is a complete invariant for orbital topological classification of such fields.

Abstract:Heteroclinic orbits for one-parameter families of nonautonomous vectorfields appear in a very natural way in many physical applications. Inspired by some recent bifurcation results for homoclinic trajectories of nonautonomous vectorfield, we define a new $\mathbf Z_2$-index and we construct a index theory for heteroclinic orbits of nonautonomous vectorfield. We prove an index theorem, by showing that, under some standard transversality assumptions, the $\mathbf Z_2$-index is equal to the parity, a homotopy invariant for paths of Fredholm operators of index 0. As a direct consequence of the index theory developed in this paper, we get a new bifurcation result for heteroclinic orbits.

Abstract:We survey index theorems counting eigenvalues of linearized Hamiltonian systems and characteristic values of polynomial operator pencils. We present a simple common graphical interpretation and generalization of the index theory using the concept of graphical Krein signature. Furthermore, we prove that derivatives of an eigenvector u= u(\lambda) of an operator pencil L(\lambda) satisfying L(\lambda) u(\lambda)= \mu(\lambda) u(\lambda) evaluated at a characteristic value of L(\lambda) do not only generate an arbitrary chain of root vectors of L(\lambda) but the chain that carries an extra information.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximum number of limit cycles for the piecewise smooth system of differential equations . Using the averaging method, we were able to generalize a previous result for Liénard systems. In our generalization, we consider g as a polynomial of degree m . We conclude that for sufficiently small values of , the number serves as a lower bound for the maximum number of limit cycles in this system, which bifurcates from the periodic orbits of the linear center , . Furthermore, we demonstrate that it is indeed possible to obtain a system with limit cycles.

Abstract:Indices of vector fields on (complex analytic) singular varieties have been considered by various authors from several different viewpoints. All these indices coincide with the classical local index of Poincaré-Hopf when the ambient variety is a smooth manifold. One has the Schwartz index, the local Euler obstruction, the GSV-index, the virtual index and the homological index (and probably other indices too). In this article we give a brief overview of all these indices and the relations amongst them. We also indicate their relations with the various generalisations to complex analytic singular varieties of the Chern classes of complex manifolds.

Local Index Theory for Lorentzian Manifolds

Abstract:Index theory for Lorentzian Dirac operators is a young subject with significant differences to elliptic index theory. It is based on microlocal analysis instead of standard elliptic theory and one of the main features is that a nontrivial index is caused by topologically nontrivial dynamics rather than nontrivial topology of the base manifold. In this paper we establish a local index formula for Lorentzian Dirac-type operators on globally hyperbolic spacetimes. This local formula implies an index theorem for general Dirac-type operators on spatially compact spacetimes with Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions on Cauchy hypersurfaces. This is significantly more general than the previously known theorems that require the compatibility of the connection with Clifford multiplication and the spatial Dirac operator on the Cauchy hypersurface to be selfadjoint with respect to a positive definite inner product.

Abstract:The restricted version of the Hilbert 16th problem for quadratic vector fields requires an upper estimate of the number of limit cycles through a vector parameter that characterizes the vector fields considered and the limit cycles to be counted. In this paper we give an upper estimate of the number of limit cycles of quadratic vector fields $"\sigma $--distant from centers and $\ka $-distant from singular quadratic vector fields" provided that the limit cycles are $"\delta $--distant from singular points and infinity".

Abstract:We establish the basics of the analysis of operators on coverings of manifolds with cylindrical ends with a group of deck transformations $\Gamma$. We prove the $\Gamma$-analogue of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer formula for Dirac operators on such coverings.

Abstract:In this paper, we define a relative equivariant coarse index for proper actions and a relative L-2-index. We derive a relative equivariant coarse index theorem connecting the relative equivariant coarse index with the localized equivariant coarse index. Furthermore, we present a calculation formula on the relative L-2-index and provide a relative L-2-index theorem. Our work is an expansion of the relative index theory which reflects the difference between two manifolds.

Abstract:Hilbert's 16th Problem, about the maximum number of limit cycles of planar polynomial vector fields of a given degree $m$, has been one of the most important driving forces for new developments in the qualitative theory of vector fields. Increasing the dimension, one cannot expect the existence of a finite upper bound for the number of limit cycles of, for instance, $3$D polynomial vector fields of a given degree $m$. Here, as an extension of such a problem in the $3$D space, we investigate the number of isolated invariant tori in $3$D polynomial vector fields. In this context, given a natural number $m$, we denote by $N(m)$ the upper bound for the number of isolated invariant tori of $3$D polynomial vector fields of degree $m$. Based on a recently developed averaging method for detecting invariant tori, our first main result provides a mechanism for constructing $3$D differential vector fields with a number $H$ of normally hyperbolic invariant tori from a given planar differential vector field with $H$ hyperbolic limit cycles. The strength of our mechanism in studying the number $N(m)$ lies in the fact that the constructed $3$D differential vector field is polynomial provided that the given planar differential vector field is polynomial. Accordingly, our second main result establishes a lower bound for $N(m)$ in terms of lower bounds for the number of hyperbolic limit cycles of planar polynomial vector fields of degree $[m/2]-1$. Based on this last result, we apply a methodology due to Christopher & Lloyd to show that $N(m)$ grows as fast as $m^3/128$. Finally, the above-mentioned problem is also formulated for higher dimensional polynomial vector fields.

Abstract:We will first establish an index theory for linear self-adjoint operator equations. And then with the help of this index theory we will discuss existence and multiplicity of solutions for asymptotically linear operator equations by making use of the dual variational methods and Morse theory. Finally, some interesting examples concerning second order Hamiltonian systems, first order Hamiltonian systems and elliptical partial differential equations will be presented to illustrate our results.
