Abstract:In the current article we study complex cycles of higher multiplicity in a specific polynomial family of holomorphic foliations in the complex plane. The family in question is a perturbation of an exact polynomial one-form giving rise to a foliation by Riemann surfaces. In this setting, a complex cycle is defined as a nontrivial element of the fundamental group of a leaf from the foliation. In addition to that, we introduce the notion of a multi-fold cycle and show that in our example there exists a limit cycle of any multiplicity. Furthermore, such a cycle gives rise to a one-parameter family of cycles continuously depending on the perturbation parameter. As the parameter decreases in absolute value, the cycles from the continuous family escape from a very large subdomain of the complex plane.

Abstract:The current article studies certain problems related to complex cycles of holomorphic foliations with singularities in the complex plane. We focus on the case when polynomial differential one-form gives rise to a foliation by Riemann surfaces. In this setting, a complex cycle is defined as a nontrivial element of the fundamental group of a leaf from the foliation. Whenever the polynomial foliation comes from a perturbation of an exact one-form, one can introduce the notion of a multi-fold cycle. This type of cycle has at least one representative that determines a free homotopy class of loops in an open fibered subdomain of the complex plane. The topology of this subdomain is closely related to the exact one-form mentioned earlier. We introduce and study the notion of multi-fold cycles of a close-to-integrable polynomial foliation. We also explore how these cycles correspond to periodic orbits of a certain Poincaré map associated with the foliation. Finally, we discuss the tendency of a continuous family of multi-fold limit cycles to escape from certain large open domains in the complex plane as the foliation converges to its integrable part.

Abstract:Consider planar real polynomial differential equations of the form x˙=Lx+Xn(x), where x=(x,y)∈R2, L is a 2×2 matrix and Xn is a homogeneous vector field of degree n>1. Most known results about these equations, valid for infinitely many n, deal with the case where the origin is a focus or a node and give either non-existence of limit cycles or upper bounds of one or two limit cycles surrounding the origin. In this paper we improve some of these results and moreover we show that for n≥3 odd there are equations of this form having at least (n+1)/2 limit cycles surrounding the origin. Our results include cases where the origin is a focus, a node, a saddle or a nilpotent singularity. We also discuss a mechanism for the bifurcation of limit cycles from infinity.
On the limit cycles of a quartic model for evolutionary stable strategies

Abstract:This paper studies the number of centers and limit cycles of the family of planar quartic polynomial vector fields that has the invariant algebraic curve $(4x^2-1)(4y^2-1)=0.$ The main interest for this type of vector fields comes from their appearance in some mathematical models in Game Theory composed by two players. In particular, we find examples with five nested limit cycles surrounding the same singularity, as well as examples with four limit cycles formed by two disjoint nests, each one of them with two limit cycles. We also prove a Berlinski\u ı's type result for this family of vector fields.

Abstract:It is known that non-hyperbolic limit cycles are structurally unstable in the set of planar smooth and analytical vector fields. In the polynomial case, it is known only that limit cycles of even degree are structurally unstable. In this paper, we prove that non-hyperbolic limit cycles of odd degree are also structurally unstable in the polynomial case, if we consider Whitney's topology.

Unveiling the Cyclicity of Monodromic Tangential Singularities: Insights Beyond the Pseudo-Hopf Bifurcation

Abstract:The cyclicity problem, crucial in analyzing planar vector fields, consists in estimating the number of limit cycles emanating from monodromic singularities. Traditionally, this estimation relies on Lyapunov coefficients. However, in nonsmooth systems, besides the limit cycles bifurcating by varying the Lyapunov coefficients, monodromic singularities on the switching curve can always be split apart yielding, under suitable conditions, a sliding region and an additional limit cycle surrounding it. This bifurcation phenomenon, known as pseudo-Hopf bifurcation, has enhanced lower-bound cyclicity estimations for monodromic singularities in Filippov systems. In this study, we push beyond the pseudo-Hopf bifurcation, demonstrating that the destruction of $(2k,2k)$-monodromic tangential singularities yields at least $k$ limit cycles surrounding sliding segments. This new bifurcation phenomenon expands our understanding of limit cycle bifurcations in nonsmooth systems and, in addition to the theoretical significance, has practical relevance in various applied models involving switches and abrupt processes.

Generic Complex Polynomial Vector Fields with Real Coefficients

Abstract:The paper studies the complex 1-dimensional polynomial vector fields with real coefficients under topological orbital equivalence preserving the separatrices of the pole at infinity. The number of generic strata is determined, and a complete parametrization of these strata is given in terms of a modulus formed by a combinatorial and an analytic part. The bifurcation diagram is described for the degree 4. A realization theorem is proved for any generic modulus.

Abstract:In the paper, we first give the least upper bound formula on the number of centers of planar real polynomial Hamiltonian vector fields. This formula reveals that the greater the number of invariant straight lines of the vector field and the less the number of its centers. Then we obtain some rules on the configurations of centers of planar real polynomial Hamiltonian Kolmogorov vector fields when the number of centers is exactly the least upper bound. As an application of these results, we give an affirmative answer to a conjecture on the topological classification of configurations for the cubic Hamiltonian Kolmogorov vector fields with four centers. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between the number of centers of planar real polynomial vector fields and the existence of limit cycles, and prove that cubic real polynomial Kolmogorov vector fields have no limit cycles if the number of its centers reaches the maximum. More precisely, it is shown that the cubic real polynomial Kolmogorov vector field must have an elementary first integral in $\mathbb{R}^2\setminus\{xy=0\}$ if it has four centers, and the number of configurations of its centers is one more than that of the cubic polynomial Hamiltonian Kolmogorov vector fields.

Abstract:Under conjugation by affine transformations, the dynamical moduli space of cubic polynomials $f$ with a $2$-cycle of Siegel disks is parameterized by a three-punctured complex plane as a degree-$2$ cover. Assuming the rotation number of $f^2$ on the Siegel disk is of bounded type, we show that on the three-punctured complex plane, the locus of the cubic polynomials with both finite critical points on the boundaries of the Siegel disks on the $2$-cycle is comprised of two arcs, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundary of the same Siegel disk, and a Jordan curve, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundaries of different Siegel disks.

Abstract:We give a description of the intersection of the zero set with the unit sphere of a zero-free polynomial in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. This description leads to the formulation of a conjecture regarding the characterization of polynomials that are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. Furthermore, we answer partially ascertaining whether an arbitrary polynomial is not cyclic.

Complex solutions of polynomial equations on the unit circle

Abstract:We explore systems of polynomial equations where we seek complex solutions with absolute value 1. Geometrically, this amounts to understanding intersections of algebraic varieties with tori -- Cartesian powers of the unit circle. We study the properties of varieties in which this intersection is Zariski dense, give a criterion for Zariski density and use it to show that the problem is decidable. This problem is a ``continuous'' analogue of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for the multiplicative group of complex numbers, however, the results are very different from Manin-Mumford. While the results of the paper appear to be new, the proofs are quite elementary. This is an expository article aiming to introduce some classical mathematical topics to a general audience. We also list some exercises and problems at the end for the curious reader to further explore these topics.

Abstract:We give sufficient conditions for the existence of one or two limit cycles of singular Lienard systems through the construction of a Poincare–Bendixson domain. With the help of the theory of rotated vector fields,we develop a method to compute bifurcation value at Saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles and homoclinic or symmetric heteroclinic bifurcations. We also present application examples and prove the existence of duck cycles.
On the cyclicity of hyperbolic polycycles

Abstract:Let $X$ be a planar smooth vector field with a polycycle $\Gamma^n$ with $n$ sides and all its corners, that are at most $n$ singularities, being hyperbolic saddles. In this paper we study the cyclicity of $\Gamma^n$ in terms of the hyperbolicity ratios of these saddles, giving explicit conditions that ensure that it is at least $k,$ for any $k\leqslant n.$ Our result extends old results and also provides a more accurate proof of the known ones because we rely on some recent powerful works that study in more detail the regularity with respect to initial conditions and parameters of the Dulac map of hyperbolic saddles for families of vector fields. We also prove that when $X$ is polynomial there is a polynomial perturbation (in general with degree much higher that the one of $X$) that attains each of the obtained lower bounds for the cyclicities. Finally, we also study some related inverse problems and provide concrete examples of applications in the polynomial world.

Scalar polynomial vector fields in real and complex time

Abstract:In the present paper, the simplest scalar ODE case is studied for polynomials $$ \dot{w}=f(w)=(w-e_0)\cdot\ldots\cdot(w-e_{d-1}) $$ of degree $d$ with $d$ simple complex zeros. The explicit solution by separation of variables and explicit integration is an almost trivial matter. In a classical spirit, indeed, we describe the complex Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}$ of the global nontrivial solution $(t,w(t))$ in complex time, as an unbranched cover of the punctured Riemann sphere. The flow property, however, fails at $w=\infty$. The global consequences depend on the period map of the residues $2\pi\mathrm{i}/f'(e_j)$ of $1/f$ at the punctures, in detail. We therefore show that polynomials $f$ exist for arbitrarily prescribed residues with zero sum. This result is not covered by standard interpolation theory. Motivated by the PDE case, we also classify the planar real-time phase portraits of the above ODE. Poincaré compactification of $w$ regularizes $w=\infty$ by $2(d-1)$ equilibria, alternatingly stable and unstable within the invariant circle boundary at infinity. In structurally stable cases, we classify all compactified phase portraits, up to orientation preserving orbit equivalence and time reversal. Combinatorially, their connection graphs are equivalent to certain unrooted, unlabeled, undirected planar trees of $d$ vertices or, dually, to certain chord diagrams with $d-1$ nonintersecting chords. It remains a conjecture, at present, that all planar trees actually arise from Poincaré compactifications. Not least, we offer a 1,000 Euro reward for the discovery, or refutation, of complex entire homoclinic orbits.

Limit cycle enumeration in random vector fields

Abstract:We study the number and distribution of the limit cycles of a planar vector field whose component functions are random polynomials. We prove a lower bound on the average number of limit cycles when the random polynomials are sampled from the Kostlan-Shub-Smale ensemble. Investigating a problem introduced by Brudnyi [Annals of Mathematics (2001)] we also consider a special local setting of counting limit cycles near a randomly perturbed center focus, and when the perturbation has i.i.d. coefficients, we prove a limit law showing that the number of limit cycles situated within a disk of radius less than unity converges almost surely to the number of real zeros of a logarithmically-correlated random univariate power series. We also consider infinitesimal perturbations where we obtain precise asymptotics on the global average count of limit cycles for a family of models. The proofs of these results use novel combinations of techniques from dynamical systems and random analytic functions.

Abstract:Let $H \subset {\mathbb P}^n$ be a real-analytic subvariety of codimension one induced by a real-analytic curve in the Grassmannian $G(n+1,n)$. Assuming $H$ has a global defining function, we prove $H$ is Levi-flat, the closure of its smooth points of top dimension is a union of complex hyperplanes, and its singular set is either of dimension $2n-2$ or dimension $2n-4$. If the singular set is of dimension $2n-4$, then we show the hypersurface is algebraic and the Levi-foliation extends to a singular holomorphic foliation of ${\mathbb P}^n$ with a meromorphic (rational of degree 1) first integral. In this case, $H$ is in some sense simply a complex cone over an algebraic curve in ${\mathbb P}^1$. Similarly if $H$ has a degenerate singularity, then $H$ is also algebraic. If the dimension of the singular set is $2n-2$ and is nondegenerate, we show by construction that the hypersurface need not be algebraic nor semialgebraic. We construct a Levi-flat real-analytic subvariety in ${\mathbb P}^2$ of real codimension 1 with compact leaves that is not contained in any proper real-algebraic subvariety of ${\mathbb P}^2$. Therefore a straightforward analogue of Chow's theorem for Levi-flat hypersurfaces does not hold.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Volume 23, Issue 3, Page 2593-2622, September 2024. In this paper, we are concerned with determining lower bounds of the number of limit cycles for piecewise polynomial holomorphic systems with a straight line of discontinuity. We approach this problem with different points of view. Initially, we study the number of zeros of the first- and second-order averaging functions. We also use the Lyapunov quantities to produce limit cycles appearing from a monodromic equilibrium point via a degenerated Andronov–Hopf type bifurcation, adding at the very end the sliding effects. Finally, we use the Poincaré–Miranda theorem for obtaining an explicit piecewise linear holomorphic system with 3 limit cycles, a result that improves the known examples in the literature that had a single limit cycle.
