Abstract: We extend the uncertainty principle, the Cowling--Price theorem, on non-compact Riemannian symmetric spaces $X$. We establish a characterization of the heat kernel of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on $X$ from integral estimates of the Cowling--Price type.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:We establish a Gaussian upper bound of the heat kernel for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on complete Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. As applications, we first prove an L^1-Liouville property for non-negative subharmonic functions when the potential function of the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature tensor is of at most quadratic growth. Then we derive lower bounds of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on closed manifolds. An upper bound of the bottom spectrum is also obtained.

Abstract:Let M be a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded between two constants -k and K. Then one expects that the heat diffusion in such a manifold behaves like the heat diffusion in Euclidean space. The purpose of this paper is to give a justification of such a statement. In [5], J. Cheeger and the third author found a lower estimate of the heat kernel by comparing it with the heat kernel of the space form whose curvature is the lower bound of the curvature of the manifold. This lower estimate is sharp if we insist the dependence should be on the lower bound of the Ricci curvature alone. It remains to give an upper estimate of the heat kernel. One does not, however, expect to have a comparison theorem for the upper bound because it is more sensitive to the geometry of the manifold. In fact, the heat kernel of the upper hialf space and the heat kernel of the complete hyperbolic manifold with finite volume have quite different behavior. This is reflected by the fact that the Laplacian has no discrete spectrum in the first case while infinite number of discrete eigenvalues may exist in the latter case. What we will prove here is that in any case, the heat kernel has to decay in a manner similar to the Euclidean heat kernel. Thus we will prove that for any constant C > 4, there exists C1 depending on C, T, the bound of the curvature of M and x so that for all t E [0, T]

Abstract:We obtain the equivalence conditions for an on-diagonal upper bound of heat kernels on self-similar measure energy spaces. In particular, this upper bound of the heat kernel is equivalent to the discreteness of the spectrum of the generator of the Dirichlet form, and to the global Poincaré inequality. The key ingredient of the proof is to obtain the Nash inequality from the global Poincaré inequality. We give two examples of families of spaces where the global Poincaré inequality is easily derived. They are the post-critically finite (p.c.f.) self-similar sets with harmonic structure and the products of self-similar measure energy spaces.

Abstract:We consider a metric measure space (M, d, mu) and a heat kernel p(t) (x, y) on M satisfying certain upper and lower estimates, which depend on two parameters alpha and beta. We show that under additional mild assumptions, these parameters are determined by the intrinsic properties of the space (M, d, mu). Namely, alpha is the Hausdorff dimension of this space, whereas beta, called the walk dimension, is determined via the properties of the family of Besov spaces W-sigma,W-2 on M. Moreover, the parameters alpha and beta are related by the inequalities 2 less than or equal to beta less than or equal to alpha + 1.We prove also the embedding theorems for the space W-beta/2,W-2, and use them to obtain the existence results for weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations on M of the form-Lu + f(x, u) = g(x),where C is the generator of the semigroup associated with p(t).The framework in this paper is applicable for a large class of fractal domains, including the generalized Sierpiniski carpet in R-n.

Abstract:We prove that, in a setting of local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces, a two-sided sub-Gaussian estimate of the heat kernel is equivalent to the conjunction of the volume doubling property, the elliptic Harnack inequality, and a certain estimate of the capacity between concentric balls. The main technical tool is the equivalence between the capacity estimate and the estimate of a mean exit time in a ball that uses two-sided estimates of a Green function in a ball.

Abstract:We derive a local Gaussian upper bound for the $$f$$ -heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure space $$(M,g,e^{-f}dv)$$ with nonnegative Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature. As applications, we obtain a sharp $$L_f^1$$ -Liouville theorem for $$f$$ -subharmonic functions and an $$L_f^1$$ -uniqueness property for nonnegative solutions of the $$f$$ -heat equation, assuming $$f$$ is of at most quadratic growth. In particular, any $$L_f^1$$ -integrable $$f$$ -subharmonic function on gradient shrinking and steady Ricci solitons must be constant. Abstract:We derive a Harnack inequality for positive solutions of the f-heat equation and Gaussian upper and lower bound estimates for the f-heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure spaces with Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. Both upper and lower bound estimates are sharp when the Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature is nonnegative. The main argument is the De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theory. As applications, we prove an $L_f^1$-Liouville theorem for f-subharmonic functions and an $L_f^1$-uniqueness theorem for f-heat equations when f has at most linear growth. We also obtain eigenvalues estimates and f-Green’s function estimates for the f-Laplace operator.

Abstract:We prove sharp pointwise heat kernel estimates for symmetric Markov processes associated with symmetric Dirichlet forms that are local with respect to some coordinates and nonlocal with respect to the remaining coordinates. The main theorem is a robustness result like the famous estimate for the fundamental solution of second order differential operators, obtained by Donald G. Aronson. Analogous to his result, we show that the corresponding translation-invariant process and the one given by the general Dirichlet form share the same pointwise points.

Abstract:This work aims to prove that the classical Gaussian kernel, when defined on a non-Euclidean symmetric space, is never positive-definite for any choice of parameter. To achieve this goal, the paper develops new geometric and analytical arguments. These provide a rigorous characterization of the positive-definiteness of the Gaussian kernel, which is complete but for a limited number of scenarios in low dimensions that are treated by numerical computations. Chief among these results are the L$^{\!\scriptscriptstyle p}$-$\hspace{0.02cm}$Godement theorems (where $p = 1,2$), which provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for a kernel defined on a symmetric space of non-compact type to be positive-definite. A celebrated theorem, sometimes called the Bochner-Godement theorem, already gives such conditions and is far more general in its scope, but is especially hard to apply. Beyond the connection with the Gaussian kernel, the new results in this work lay out a blueprint for the study of invariant kernels on symmetric spaces, bringing forth specific harmonic analysis tools that suggest many future applications.

Abstract:Abstract Grigor’yan, Hu and Lau [10] introduced sub-Gaussian heat kernels on general metric measure spaces and defined a family of function spaces to characterize the domain of associated Dirichlet forms. In this paper, we will improve their results about norm equivalence. As an application, we construct self-similar Dirichlet forms on a class of self-similar sets containing the Sierpiński gaskets and carpets. Then we prove the Poincaré inequality and give effective resistance estimates by the self-similarity. Consequently, we have a new equivalent characterization of heat kernel estimates through function spaces with strong recurrent condition.

Abstract:This paper studies strongly local symmetric Dirichlet forms on general measure spaces. The underlying space is equipped with the intrinsic metric induced by the Dirichlet form, with respect to which the metric measure space does not necessarily satisfy volume-doubling property. Assuming Nash-type inequality, it is proved in this paper that outside a properly exceptional set, given a pointwise on-diagonal heat kernel upper bound in terms of the volume function, the comparable heat kernel lower bound also holds. The only assumption made on the volume growth rate is that it can be bounded by a continuous function satisfying doubling property, in other words, is not exponential.

Abstract:Following Donaldson's openness theorem on deforming a conical Kähler–Einstein metric, we prove a parabolic Schauder-type estimate with respect to conical metrics. As a corollary, we show that the conical Kähler–Ricci flow exists for short time. The key is to establish the relevant heat kernel estimates, where we use the Weber formula on Bessel function of the second kind and Carslaw's heat kernel representation in [8].

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for sub-Gaussian estimates of the heat kernel of a strongly local regular Dirichlet form on a metric measure space. The conditions for two-sided estimates are given in terms of the generalized capacity inequality and the Poincare inequality. The main difficulty lies in obtaining the elliptic Harnack inequality under these assumptions. The conditions for upper bound alone are given in terms of the generalized capacity inequality and the Faber-Krahn inequality.

Abstract:The present work develops certain analytical tools required to construct and compute invariant kernels on the space of complex covariance matrices. The main result is the $\mathrm{L}^1\,-$Godement theorem, which states that any invariant kernel, which is (in a certain natural sense) also integrable, can be computed by taking the inverse spherical transform of a positive function. General expressions for inverse spherical transforms are then provided, which can be used to explore new families of invariant kernels, at a rather moderate computational cost. A further, alternative approach for constructing new invariant kernels is also introduced, based on Ramanujan's master theorem for symmetric cones.
