Abstract:A folklore proof of Euclid's theorem on the infinitude of primes uses the Euler product and the irrationality of $\zeta(2) = \pi^2/6$. A quantified form of Euclid's Theorem is Bertrand's postulate $p_{n+1} < 2p_n$. By quantifying the folklore proof using an irrationality measure for $6/\pi^2$, we give a proof (communicated to Paulo Ribenboim in 2005) of a much weaker upper bound on $p_{n+1}$.

Abstract:In this note we show how the irrationality measure of $\zeta(s) = \pi^2/6$ can be used to obtain explicit lower bounds for $\pi(x)$. We analyze the key ingredients of the proof of the finiteness of the irrationality measure, and show how to obtain good lower bounds for $\pi(x)$ from these arguments as well. While versions of some of the results here have been done by other authors, our arguments are more elementary and yield a lower bound of order $x/\log x$ as a natural boundary.

Abstract:A simple geometric construction on the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of curves of genus $0$ with $n$ ordered marked points is described which gives a common framework for many irrationality proofs for zeta values. This construction yields Apéry's approximations to $\zeta(2)$ and $\zeta(3)$, and for larger $n$, an infinite family of small linear forms in multiple zeta values with an interesting algebraic structure. It also contains a generalisation of the linear forms used by Ball and Rivoal to prove that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational.

Abstract:Using basic tools of mathematical analysis and elementary probability theory we address several problems on the irrationality of series of distinct unit fractions, $\sum_k 1/a_k$. In particular, we study subseries of the Lambert series $\sum_k 1/(t^k-1)$ and two types of irrationality sequences $(a_k)$ introduced by Paul Erdős and Ronald Graham. Next, we address a question of Erdős, who asked how rapidly a sequence of positive integers $(a_k)$ can grow if both series $\sum_k 1/a_k$ and $\sum_k 1/(a_k+1)$ have rational sums. Our construction of double exponentially growing sequences $(a_k)$ with this property generalizes to any number $d$ of series $\sum_k 1/(a_k+j)$, $j=0,1,2,\ldots,d-1$, and, in particular, also gives a positive answer to a question of Erdős and Ernst Straus on the interior of the set of $d$-tuples of their sums. Finally, we prove the existence of a sequence $(a_k)$ such that all well-defined sums $\sum_k 1/(a_k+t)$, $t\in\mathbb{Z}$, are rational numbers, giving a negative answer to a conjecture by Kenneth Stolarsky.

Abstract:We study algebraic discrete valuations dominating normal local domains of dimension two. We construct a family of examples to show that the Hilbert–Samuel function of the associated graded ring of the valuation can fail to be asymptotically of the form: quasi-polynomial plus a bounded function. We also show that the associated multiplicity can be irrational, or even transcendental.

Abstract:Let X be an irreducible variety and Bir(X) its group of birational transformations. We show that the group structure of Bir(X) determines whether X is rational and whether X is ruled. Additionally, we prove that any Borel subgroup of Bir(X) has derived length at most twice the dimension of X, with equality occurring if and only if X is rational and the Borel subgroup is standard. We also provide examples of non-standard Borel subgroups of Bir(P^n) and Aut(A^n), thereby resolving conjectures by Popov and Furter-Poloni.

Abstract:In this note, we prove the irrationality of $\zeta(5)$ and generalise the method to prove irrationality of higher odd zeta values. Our proof relies on the method of contradiction, existence of solution of Linear Diophantine equation and mathematical induction. For $n\geq 1$, we denote $d_n=\text{lcm}(1,2,...,n)$. In the first part of the article, we assume $\zeta(5)$ is rational, say $a/b$. Then we observe that for $n\geq b$, there exists an equation involving linear combination of $\zeta(5)$ with coefficients $d_n$ that has a solution. Later using existence of solution of Linear Diophantine equation, we show that such a linear combination of $\zeta(5)$ has no solution, which is a contradiction. In the second part of the article, we generalise this method for all higher odd zeta values.

Geometric Proof of the Irrationality of Square-Roots for Select Integers

Abstract:This paper presents geometric proofs for the irrationality of square roots of select integers, extending classical approaches. Building on known geometric methods for proving the irrationality of sqrt(2), the authors explore whether similar techniques can be applied to other non-square integers. They begin by reviewing well-known results, such as Euclid's proof for the irrationality of sqrt(2), and discuss subsequent geometric extensions for sqrt(3), sqrt(5), and sqrt(6). The authors then introduce new geometric constructions, particularly using hexagons, to prove the irrationality of sqrt(6). Furthermore, the paper investigates the limitations and challenges of extending these geometric methods to triangular numbers. Through detailed geometric reasoning, the authors successfully generalize the approach to several square-free numbers and identify cases where the method breaks down. The paper concludes by inviting further exploration of geometric irrationality proofs for other integers, proposing potential avenues for future work.

Abstract:We investigate the topological structure of the decimal expansions of the three famous naturally occurring irrational numbers, $\pi$, $e$, and golden ratio, by explicitly calculating the diversity of the pair distributions of the ten digits ranging from 0 to 9. And we find that there is a universal two-phase behavior, which collapses into a single curve with a power law phenomenon. We further reveal that the two-phase behavior is closely related to general aspects of phase transitions in physical systems. It is then numerically shown that such characteristics originate from an intrinsic property of genuine random distribution of the digits in decimal expansions. Thus, mathematical irrational numbers are not so physically irrational as long as they have such an intrinsic property.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. Let [math] denote the Kubota–Leopoldt [math]-adic zeta function. We prove that, for every nonnegative integer [math], there exists an odd integer [math] in the interval [math] such that [math] is irrational. In particular, at least one of [math] is irrational. Our approach is inspired by the recent work of Sprang. We construct explicit rational functions. The Volkenborn integrals of these rational functions' (higher-order) derivatives produce good linear combinations of [math] and [math]-adic Hurwitz zeta values. The most difficult step is proving that certain Volkenborn integrals are nonzero, which is resolved by carefully manipulating the binomial coefficients.

Abstract:We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.

On the Connection Between Irrationality Measures and Polynomial Continued Fractions

Abstract:Linear recursions with integer coefficients, such as the one generating the Fibonacci sequence, have been intensely studied over millennia and yet still hide new mathematics. Such a recursion was used by Apéry in his proof of the irrationality of $\zeta(3)$, later named the Apéry constant. Apéry's proof used a specific linear recursion containing integer polynomials forming a continued fraction; called polynomial continued fractions (PCFs). Similar polynomial recursions prove the irrationality of other mathematical constants such as $\pi$ and $e$. More generally, the sequences generated by PCFs form Diophantine approximations (DAs), which are ubiquitous in areas of math such as number theory. It is not known which polynomial recursions create useful DAs and whether they prove irrationality. Here, we present general conclusions and conjectures about DAs created from PCFs. Specifically, we generalize Apéry's work, going beyond his particular choice of PCF, finding the conditions under which a PCF proves irrationality or provides an efficient DA. To provide concrete examples, we apply our findings to PCFs found by the Ramanujan Machine algorithms to represent fundamental constants such as $\pi$, $e$, $\zeta(3)$, and the Catalan constant G. For each such PCF, we demonstrate the extraction of its convergence rate and efficiency, as well as the bound it provides for the irrationality measure of the fundamental constant. We further propose new DA conjectures based on PCFs. Our findings motivate future research on sequences created by any linear recursions with integer coefficients, to aid the development of systematic algorithms for finding DAs of fundamental constants. Consequently, our study may contribute to ongoing efforts to answer open questions, such as the proof of the irrationality of the Catalan constant or of values of the Riemann zeta function (e.g., $\zeta(5)$).

Abstract:Irrational numbers are introduced usually already introduced in lower secondary level schools. But typically, maybe with the exception of $\sqrt{2}$, no mathematical proof of irrationality is provided. In particular it is not proven that famous Euler's number $e$ as well as the number $\pi$ are irrational. In this article we want to show how this can be done with very elementary methods from calculus. In addition, we offer geometrical variants for many of the analytical statements, which in particular create variability in the level of requirements. ----- Irrationale Zahlen werden in der Schule bereits in der Sekundarstufe I eingeführt. Allerdings wird typischerweise, mit Ausnahme vielleicht für $\sqrt{2}$, kein mathematischer Beweis zur Irrationalität geführt. Insbesondere wird nicht bewiesen, dass die berühmte Eulersche Zahl $e$ sowie die Kreiszahl $\pi$ irrationale Zahlen sind. In diesem Artikel wollen wir aufzeigen, wie dies mit recht elementaren Methoden der Analysis möglich ist. Darüber hinaus bieten wir für viele der analytischen Aussagen geometrische Varianten zur Veranschaulichung, die insbesondere Variabilität im Anspruchsniveau schaffen.

Abstract:Let $\zeta_2(\cdot)$ be the Kubota-Leopoldt $2$-adic zeta function. On the Irrationality Exponents of Mahler Numbers

Abstract:We explore Mahler numbers originating from functions $f(z)$ that satisfy the functional equation $f(z) = (A(z)f(z^d) + C(z))/B(z)$. A procedure to compute the irrationality exponents of such numbers is developed using continued fractions for formal Laurent series, and the form of all such irrationality exponents is investigated. This serves to extend Dmitry Badziahin's paper, On the Spectrum of Irrationality Exponents of Mahler Numbers, where he does the same under the condition that $C(z) = 0$. Furthermore, we cover the required background of continued fractions in detail for unfamiliar readers. This essay was submitted as a thesis in the Pure Mathematics Honours program at the University of Sydney.
