Abstract:In this note we show how the irrationality measure of $\zeta(s) = \pi^2/6$ can be used to obtain explicit lower bounds for $\pi(x)$. We analyze the key ingredients of the proof of the finiteness of the irrationality measure, and show how to obtain good lower bounds for $\pi(x)$ from these arguments as well. While versions of some of the results here have been done by other authors, our arguments are more elementary and yield a lower bound of order $x/\log x$ as a natural boundary.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. Let [math] denote the Kubota–Leopoldt [math]-adic zeta function. We prove that, for every nonnegative integer [math], there exists an odd integer [math] in the interval [math] such that [math] is irrational. In particular, at least one of [math] is irrational. Our approach is inspired by the recent work of Sprang. We construct explicit rational functions. The Volkenborn integrals of these rational functions' (higher-order) derivatives produce good linear combinations of [math] and [math]-adic Hurwitz zeta values. The most difficult step is proving that certain Volkenborn integrals are nonzero, which is resolved by carefully manipulating the binomial coefficients.

On several irrationality problems for Ahmes series

Abstract:Using basic tools of mathematical analysis and elementary probability theory we address several problems on the irrationality of series of distinct unit fractions, $\sum_k 1/a_k$. In particular, we study subseries of the Lambert series $\sum_k 1/(t^k-1)$ and two types of irrationality sequences $(a_k)$ introduced by Paul Erdős and Ronald Graham. Next, we address a question of Erdős, who asked how rapidly a sequence of positive integers $(a_k)$ can grow if both series $\sum_k 1/a_k$ and $\sum_k 1/(a_k+1)$ have rational sums. Our construction of double exponentially growing sequences $(a_k)$ with this property generalizes to any number $d$ of series $\sum_k 1/(a_k+j)$, $j=0,1,2,\ldots,d-1$, and, in particular, also gives a positive answer to a question of Erdős and Ernst Straus on the interior of the set of $d$-tuples of their sums. Finally, we prove the existence of a sequence $(a_k)$ such that all well-defined sums $\sum_k 1/(a_k+t)$, $t\in\mathbb{Z}$, are rational numbers, giving a negative answer to a conjecture by Kenneth Stolarsky.

Abstract:We shall present effective approximations measures for certain infinite products related to $q$-exponential function. There are two main targets. First we shall prove an explicit irrationality measure result for the values of $q$-exponential function at rational points. Then, if we restrict the approximations to rational numbers of the shape $d^s/N$, we may replace Bundschuh's irrationality exponent $7/3$ by $2+\frac{1}{3+2\sqrt 3}=2.1547...$.

Abstract:For an invariant probability measure for the Gauss map, almost all numbers are Diophantine if the log of the partial quotent function is integrable. We show that with respect to a ``Renyi measure'' for the Gauss map with the log of the partial quotent function non-integrable, almost all numbers are Liouville. We also exhibit Gauss-invariant, ergodic measures with arbitrary irrationality exponent. The proofs are via the ``extravagance'' of positive, stationary, stochastic processes. In addition, we prove a Khinchin-type theorem for Diophantine approximation with respect to ``weak Renyi measures''.

Friable averages of complex arithmetic functions

Abstract:We evaluate friable averages of arithmetic functions whose Dirichlet series is analytically close to some complex power of the Riemann zeta function. We obtain asymptotic expansions resembling those provided by the Selberg-Delange method in the non-friable case. Some application are provided to the friable distribution of the additive function counting the total number of prime factors.

Abstract:For a fixed irrational $\theta>0$ with a prescribed irrationality measure function, we study the correlation $\int\limits_{1}^{X}\Delta\left(x\right)\Delta\left(\theta x\right)dx$, where $\Delta$ is the Dirichlet's Delta Function from the Divisor Problem. It is known that when $\theta$ have finite irrationality measure there's a decorrelation given in terms of its measure and a strong decorrelation is obtained at every positive irrational number, except, maybe, at the Liouville numbers. We prove that for the irrationals with a prescribed irrationality measure function $\psi$, a decorrelation can be obtained in terms of $\psi^{-1}$.

Abstract:We provide an upper bound for the effective irrationality exponents of cubic algebraics x with the minimal polynomial . In particular, we show that it becomes non-trivial, i.e. better than the classical bound of Liouville, in the case . Moreover, under the condition , we provide an explicit lower bound for the expression || qx || for all large . These results are based on the recently discovered continued fractions of cubic irrationals and improve the currently best-known bounds of Wakabayashi.

Abstract:We study the operator norm discrepancy of i.i.d. random matrices, initiating the matrix-valued analog of a long line of work on the $\ell^{\infty}$ norm discrepancy of i.i.d. random vectors. First, using repurposed results on vector discrepancy and new first moment method calculations, we give upper and lower bounds on the discrepancy of random matrices. We treat i.i.d. matrices drawn from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) and low-rank Gaussian Wishart distributions. In both cases, for what turns out to be the "critical" number of $\Theta(n^2)$ matrices of dimension $n \times n$, we identify the discrepancy up to constant factors. Second, we give a new analysis of the matrix hyperbolic cosine algorithm of Zouzias (2011), a matrix version of an online vector discrepancy algorithm of Spencer (1977) studied for average-case inputs by Bansal and Spencer (2020), for the case of i.i.d. random matrix inputs. We both give a general analysis and extract concrete bounds on the discrepancy achieved by this algorithm for matrices with independent entries (including GOE matrices) and Gaussian Wishart matrices.

For combining these results, we make a minor adjustment of Chen--Stapleton's method using the trace map of differential modules.

Abstract:We study algebraic discrete valuations dominating normal local domains of dimension two. We construct a family of examples to show that the Hilbert–Samuel function of the associated graded ring of the valuation can fail to be asymptotically of the form: quasi-polynomial plus a bounded function. We also show that the associated multiplicity can be irrational, or even transcendental.

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to derive effective discrepancy estimates for the distribution of rational points on general semisimple algebraic group varieties, in general families of subsets and at arbitrarily small scales. We establish mean-square, almost sure and uniform estimates for the discrepancy with explicit error bounds. We also prove an analogue of W. Schmidt's theorem, which establishes effective almost sure asymptotic counting of rational solutions to Diophantine inequalities in the Euclidean space. We formulate and prove a version of it for rational points on the group variety, with an effective bound which in some instances can be expected to be the best possible.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an average risk sharing problem, in which the optimal objective function is called an average-inf-convolution. We study the properties of the average-inf-convolution for a general risk measure, and obtain the explicit form of the average-inf-convolution. We also analyze the average risk sharing problems in the classic utility models in behavioral economics. Explicit forms of the average-inf-convolutions are obtained in the expected utility model and in the utility-based shortfall model, respectively. In the rank-dependent expected utility (RDEU) model, we give a lower bound of the average-inf-convolution for the RDEU-based shortfall.

Abstract:In this paper we study the degrees of irrationality of hypersurfaces of large degree in a complex projective variety. We show that the maps computing the degrees of irrationality of these hypersurfaces factor through rational fibrations of the ambient variety. As a consequence, we give tight bounds on the degree of irrationality of these hypersurfaces in terms of a new invariant of independent interest: the minimal fibering degree of a projective variety with respect to an effective divisor. As a corollary we show that the degree of irrationality of a complete intersection of sufficiently large and unbalanced degrees is roughly the product of the degrees. This gives a partial answer to a question of Bastianelli, De Poi, Ein, Lazarsfeld, and the third author.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to estimate the irrationality of moduli spaces of hyperkähler manifolds of types K3$^{[n]}$, Kum$_{n}$, OG6, and OG10. We prove that the degrees of irrationality of these moduli spaces are bounded from above by a universal polynomial in the dimension and degree of the manifolds they parametrize. We also give a polynomial bound for the degrees of irrationality of moduli spaces of $(1,d)$-polarized abelian surfaces.
