Abstract:We construct the type IIB supergravity solutions describing D3-branes ending on 5-branes, in the near-horizon limit of the D3-branes. Our solutions are holographically dual to the 4d N=4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on a half-line, at large N and large 't Hooft coupling, with various boundary conditions that preserve half of the supersymmetry. The solutions are limiting cases of the general solutions with the same symmetries constructed in 2007 by D'Hoker, Estes and Gutperle. The classification of our solutions matches exactly with the general classification of boundary conditions for D3-branes ending on 5-branes by Gaiotto and Witten. We use the gravity duals to compute the one-point functions of some chiral operators in the N=4 SYM theory on a half-line at strong coupling, and find that they do not match with the expectation values of the same operators with the same boundary conditions at small 't Hooft coupling. Our solutions may also be interpreted as the gravity duals of 4d N=4 SYM on AdS_4, with various boundary conditions.

A story of non-conformal branes: spindles, disks, circles and black holes

Abstract:We consider the $(p+2)$-dimensional gauged supergravities arising as a consistent truncation of type II on $S^{8-p}$, which are associated with the near-horizon limit of D$p$-branes, for $p=2,4,5,6$ (and NS5-branes for $p=5$). In a truncation of these theories with only abelian gauge fields and scalars, we find several classes of new solutions, with and without supersymmetry. Our ansatz for such backgrounds is inspired by the recent progress in the study of branes wrapped on orbifolds, but unlike those examples we consider "non-conformal branes", $i.e.$ no Anti de Sitter factors in the metric. Focusing on cases with non-trivial gauge fields, we can divide the solutions that we present in three categories: 1) branes wrapping Riemann surfaces, spindles and disks, 2) branes wrapped on a circle with a holonomy for the gauge field along the circle and 3) electrically charged black holes in gauged supergravity, which uplift to rotating branes in ten dimensions. We carefully analyze the conditions for supersymmetry in all these cases.

Abstract:We construct the N=2, D=9 supergravity theory up to the quartic fermionic terms and derive the supersymmetry transformation rules for the fields modulo cubic fermions. We consider a class of p-brane solutions of this theory, the stainless p-branes, which cannot be isotropically oxidized into higher dimensions. The new stainless elementary membrane and elementary particle solutions are found. It is explicitly verified that these solutions preserve half of the supersymmetry.

Supergravity solutions for D$p$-D$(6-p)$ bound states: from $p=7$ to $p=-1$

Abstract:Near horizon geometries of D$p$-branes with $p\neq 3$ are singular with a running dilaton. Bound states of D$p$ branes with their magnetic cousins, D$(6-p)$ branes, can stabilise the dilaton such that an AdS factor might appear in the near horizon region, potentially leading to a chain of AdS vacua of the form $AdS_{p+2}\times S^{p+2} \times \mathbb{T}^{6-2p}$. The solutions with $p=-1, 1, 3$ are supersymmetric with the cases $p=1, 3$ being well-known examples already. We construct the explicit (partially smeared) brane bound state solutions for all such configurations where the cases $p=-1,2$ are entirely novel and we find no AdS geometry for these. The two novel classes of solutions feature ghost branes (negative tension branes), and we suggest they are physical for the D$(-1)-$D$7$ solutions but unphysical for the D$2-$D$4$ solutions. The bound state of a D$(-1)$ and a D7 brane in supergravity was only hinted upon recently in \cite{Aguilar-Gutierrez:2022kvk} and here we correct the solution in order to preserve supersymmetry and find that the dilaton can indeed be stabilised which indicates there could be a holographic dual matrix theory which generalises the IKKT matrix model to allow for conformal invariance.

4D de Sitter from String Theory via 6D Supergravity

Abstract:We obtain de Sitter (dS) solutions from controlled string-theory constructions. We review how minimal gauged chiral 6D supergravity evades standard dS no-go theorems by having a positive scalar potential and describe the known 4D classical dS, AdS and Minkowski solutions. Grimm and collaborators recently found a related 6D supergravity by direct F-theory Calabi-Yau flux compactifications and we construct classical 4D maximally symmetric solutions for this 6D supergravity. These provide explicit solutions of the higher-dimensional field equations corresponding to dS, AdS and flat spacetimes in 4D, allowing interesting hierarchies of scales. We show how the singularities of these solutions are consistent with the back-reaction of two space-filling 4D brane-like sources situated within the extra dimensions and infer some of the properties of these sources using the formalism of point particle effective field theory (PPEFT), showing the sources are not vanilla objects like D branes. These tools relate the near-source asymptotic forms of bulk fields to source properties and have been extensively tested for more prosaic physical systems involving the back-reaction of small sources, such as the dependence of atomic energy levels on nuclear properties. We use it to determine the tension of the brane-like sources (that can be positive) and its derivatives. We verify that the solutions are in the weak coupling/large volume regime required to neglect quantum and $\alpha'$ effects.

Space-time filling branes in non critical (super) string theories

Abstract:We consider solutions of (super) gravities associated to non-critical (super) string theories in arbitrary space-time dimension D=p+3, that describe generically non extremal black p-branes charged under NSNS or RR gauge fields, embedded in some non critical vacuum. In the case of vacuum (uncharged) backgrounds, we solve completely the problem obtaining all the possible solutions, that consist of the (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times a linear dilaton times a S^1, and a three parameter family of solutions that include (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the cigar, and its T-dual (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the trumpet. For NSNS charged solutions, we also solve in closed form the problem, obtaining several families of solutions, that include in particular the fundamental non-critical string solution embedded in the cigar vacuum, recently found in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0604202" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0604202">hep-th/0604202</a>, a solution that we interpret as a fundamental non-critical string embedded in the linear dilaton vacuum, and a two-parameter family of regular curvature solutions asymptotic to AdS_{1,2}\times S^1. In the case of RR charged Dp-branes solutions, an ansatz allows us to find a non conformal, constant curvature, asymptotically AdS_{1,p+1} space, T-dual to AdS_{1,p+2}, together with a two-parameter family of solutions that includes the non conformal, AdS black hole like solution associated with the earlier space. The solutions obtained by T-duality are Einstein spaces consisting of a two-parameter family of conformal, constant dilaton solutions, that include, in particular, the AdS black hole of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0403254" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0403254">hep-th/0403254</a>. We speculate about the possible applications of some of them in the framework of the gauge-gravity correspondence.

Abstract:We use the duality between gravitational dynamics and fluids living on dynamical surfaces carrying multiple charges, known as the blackfold approach, to perturbativaly construct new asymptotically global (Anti)-de Sitter multi-spinning, non-extremal, multi-charged black holes in theories of higher-dimensional gravity minimally coupled to a dilaton and higher-form gauge fields in spacetime dimensions $D\ge5$, and new asymptotically AdS$_{l}\times S^{m}$ black holes in type IIB and eleven-dimensional supergravity. These solutions include the generalisation of the Kerr-Newman solution to (A)dS carrying either electric or string charge, generalisations of black rings to higher-dimensions with $\mathbb{S}^p\times \mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ horizon topology, static de Sitter solutions carrying arbitrary $q$-brane charge, as well as various asymptotically AdS$_{l}\times S^{m}$ multi-charged and multi-spinning black hole solutions, some of which correspond to novel thermal states in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory.

Abstract:We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity of the superpotentials is also studied and a moment map associated to the D-terms is proposed. Among different examples, we discuss an application to the study of D7-branes on SU(3)-structure backgrounds, which reproduces and generalizes some previous results.
D3-branes and M5-branes wrapped on a topological disc

Abstract:Employing the method applied to construct $AdS_5$ solutions from M5-branes recently by Bah, Bonetti, Minasian and Nardoni, we construct supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions from D3-branes and M5-branes wrapped on a disc with non-trivial holonomies at the boundary. In five-dimensional $U(1)^3$-gauged $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity, we find $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions. We uplift the solutions to type IIB supergravity and obtain D3-branes wrapped on a topological disc. We also uplift the solutions to eleven-dimensional supergravity and obtain M5-branes wrapped on a product of topological disc and Riemann surface. For the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ solution, holographic central charges are finite and well-defined. On the other hand, we could not find $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ solution with finite holographic central charge. Finally, we show that the topological disc we obtain is, in fact, identical to a special case of the multi-charge spindle solution.

M-theory Solutions Invariant under $D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ)$

Abstract:We simplify and extend the construction of half-BPS solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity, with isometry superalgebra D(2,1;\gamma) \oplus D(2,1;\gamma). Their space-time has the form AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 warped over a Riemann surface \Sigma. It describes near-horizon geometries of M2 branes ending on, or intersecting with, M5 branes along a common string. The general solution to the BPS equations is specified by a reduced set of data (\gamma, h, G), where \gamma is the real parameter of the isometry superalgebra, and h and G are functions on \Sigma whose differential equations and regularity conditions depend only on the sign of \gamma. The magnitude of \gamma enters only through the map of h, G onto the supergravity fields, thereby promoting all solutions into families parametrized by |\gamma|. By analyzing the regularity conditions for the supergravity fields, we prove two general theorems: (i) that the only solution with a 2-dimensional CFT dual is AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x R^2, modulo discrete identifications of the flat R^2, and (ii) that solutions with \gamma < 0 cannot have more than one asymptotic higher-dimensional AdS region. We classify the allowed singularities of h and G near the boundary of \Sigma, and identify four local solutions: asymptotic AdS_4/Z_2 or AdS_7' regions; highly-curved M5-branes; and a coordinate singularity called the "cap". By putting these "Lego" pieces together we recover all known global regular solutions with the above symmetry, including the self-dual strings on M5 for $\gamma < 0$, and the Janus solution for \gamma > 0, but now promoted to families parametrized by |\gamma|. We also construct exactly new regular solutions which are asymptotic to AdS_4/Z_2 for \gamma < 0, and conjecture that they are a different superconformal limit of the self-dual string.

Abstract:Employing the method applied to M5-branes recently by Bah, Bonetti, Minasian and Nardoni, we study D4-branes wrapped on a disk with a non-trivial holonomy at the boundary. In $F(4)$ gauged supergravity in six dimensions, we find supersymmetric $AdS_4$ solutions and uplift the solutions to massive type IIA supergravity. We calculate the holographic free energy of dual three-dimensional superconformal field theories.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Duality of Super D-brane Actions in Type IIB Supergravity Background

Abstract:We show that supersymmetric and $\kappa$-symmetric Dp-brane actions in type II supergravity background have the same duality transformation properties as those in a flat Minkowskian background. Specially, it is shown that the super D-string transforms in a covariant way while the super D3-brane is self-dual under the $SL(2,Z)$ duality. Also, the D2-brane and the D4-brane transform in ways expected from the relation between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory. The present study proves that various duality symmetries, which were originally found in the flat background field, are precisely valid even in the curved background geometry.

Some aspects of non-perturbative QCD from non-susy D3 brane of Type IIB string theory

Abstract:It is well-known that the non-supersymmetric D3 brane (a cousin of BPS D3 brane) including its black version of type IIB string theory has a decoupling limit, where the decoupled geometry is the gravity dual of a non-supersymmetric, non-conformal (finite temperature) quantum field theory having some properties similar to QCD. Using the ideas of AdS/CFT we study some non-perturbative aspects of this quantum field theory. Since in this case we have a Yang-Mills theory (no quarks) with running coupling (non-constant dilaton), we compute the gluon condensate in this theory as a function of temperature and also compute the beta function. The behavior of the gluon condensate is found to resemble much like the SU(3) lattice QCD result and the beta function is found to be negative. We further compute both the pseudoscalar and the scalar glueball mass spectra in this theory using WKB approximation and find that the mass ratios of the first excited state to the ground state of the scalar glueball are quite close to the lattice QCD results.

Non-geometric BPS branes on T-folds

Abstract:We give a detailed (microscopic) description of the geometric and non-geometric fundamental branes and their bound states in Type II superstring compactifications preserving = 6 supersymmetry. We consider general boundary states that couple to the twisted sector and compute the relevant annulus amplitudes. We check consistency of the construction by relating the 'transverse' channel, corresponding to closed-string 'tree-level' exchange, with the 'direct' open-string loop channel. Focussing on the Type IIA frame, we show that D0-D4 have the expected tension for a geometric brane, while the non-geometric D2-D6 boundary states have a tension equal to the one of a geometric brane for the Z K orbifold. This is consistent with Fricke T-duality of the = 6 model.

Abstract:By assuming the existence of a novel multipronged string state for D-particles interacting with D-brane intersections in type IIA string theory, we are able to derive a quantum mechanical description of supersymmetric Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. A supersymmetric index calculation provides evidence for this conjecture. The quantum mechanical system becomes two decoupled conformal quantum mechanical systems in the low energy limit. The conformal quantum mechanics has expected properties of a dual description of string theory on $AdS_2\times S^2$.
