Abstract:Radiation swelling leads to significant degradation of mechanical properties of structural nuclear materials, which limits the service life. Experimental development of new radiation resistant materials is a complex and time-consuming task, however modeling can accelerate it. In this work the machine learning methods were applied to known experimental data on the swelling in austenitic steels under fast neutron irradiation. The artificial neural network model was build, which predicts the value of radiation swelling given the composition, irradiation dose and temperature. The estimated mean absolute error on the test data is 1.8 % vol. in the range up to 50 % vol., with the corresponding R2 of 0.88. We show that the model correctly predicts the onset and the rate of steady state swelling even on the new data. The model's predictions were analyzed and it is demonstrated that they are consistent with the empirical observations. Alloying guidelines are proposed, based on accumulated local effect of the alloying elements. The limitations and the ways to improve the results are also discussed.
